pretty decent all around(3D animation is pretty good)but could have been better
disdressed1210 June 2007
i guess i didn't mind this movie.i mean,it is enjoyable and the animation is well done.the story is simple, yet muddled at times,if that makes any sense.there are a lot of different characters in this one,and it's kind of hard to keep track,at times.there is lots of action and adventure.i found the ending anti-climatic.this is the first of three movies in the "Bionicle series",and though i haven't seen the 2nd and 3rd yet,i suspect this one is a stand alone adventure.anyway,it's an entertaining 3D animated movie, though i wouldn't call it stellar,by any means.it's pretty fast paced, but short in its running time(less than 80 minutes.nevertheless,i think there are many more positives than negatives.i'm giving "Bionicle: Mask of light" a 7/10

Bionicle: Mask of Light 2003 Review
chandean-6976215 April 2021
"Unity, Duty, and Destiny." Bionicles were my absolute favorite thing throughout my entire childhood. All the iterations of these beloved toys I adored, all the way up until they were canceled and replaced with the less superior Hero Factory line. I collected every figure in every era, so it's an understatement to say I cherished this film as a kid.

That all goes to say this was not nearly as good as I remember it being. The animation, script, voice acting, and fight scenes are all comically bad.

I wish they went for more of a Lego Movie approach and made the world / characters actual Bionicles, especially for characters like Makuta who honestly has almost no resemblance to its toy counterpart, it just would've made the movie that much better.

Part of this film will always have a special place in my heart because of my love for the Bionicle line of toys and pure nostalgia, but this is honestly a terrible movie.

Unity, Duty, and Destiny!
bombasticbrody2 February 2018
This is a very good film! This movie is more than just a toy commercial, it has great action, CGI, characters, design, story, etc. This film is part of the BIONICLE franchise, so of course who wouldn't like this movie? The problem with this film is people look at the CGI and think it looks awful, at todays standards it kinda is. However back in the day this CGI was AMAZING for its time! I will admit that this movie is nowhere near perfect, as it has its downs. I definitely recommend this one. I've noticed how when people upload this film on YouTube, the quality is not the same. In fact the quality is usually much more worse. If you want to watch it with better quality than I recommend buying the DVD instead of the watching the poor quality uploads on YouTube. Overall this film is great, if you get the chance you definitely should watch this film.

This was one of my favorite movies when I was young. I was super into Bionicle and Lego. Watching the movie today is quite nostalgic but even ignoring that, this still is a pretty good kid's movie. The characters are well designed, the voice talent is pretty good, and it is a pretty entertaining story. I think that this movie does teach some good lessons about friendship and working together to achieve the best outcome. There are a couple elements that only a Bionicle fan will understand but the movie does a decent job of introducing newcomers to the world of Bionicle. Overall, "The Mask of Light" is a fun and entertaining adventure.

Just barely watchable for non-fans
TBJCSKCNRRQTreviews12 March 2004
Before I saw this, I thought it wouldn't matter much if I didn't know the characters beforehand. I was wrong. I could barely follow the story, which annoyed me, since it was so simple that it hurts. The plot is OK, but unless you're a fan of Bionicle, you won't really care about it; it spends too little time telling us who these characters are, or giving us reasons to like them, or care for them. I realize that this is a children's movie, but it should have been better; most Disney movies give you characters to care about. The acting varied from decent to very bad. The characters were OK, but too many of them seemed to be there just for the sake of comic relief(on a side-note, why did one of the Toa's talk like Yoda?). The CGI is mostly OK, but at times it descends into mediocrity. Something I found repetitively annoying was how the animators kept trying to give these characters with barely any facial features at all emotion; it just doesn't work, when the eyes are lights and the face is a metal surface. Light and metal can't convey emotions like human actors can. They should have realized that, and put more action in it instead. With all that said, the action was the most entertaining thing in this movie, especially the fight at the end. Apart from that, this movie has very little to offer to non-fans of Bionicle, and if you get around to watching this, you'll be happy that it's only 70 minutes, because you won't be able to sit through any more of it when it's done. 5/10

Lord of the Rings in a New Light: The Mask of Criticism
Westernesse828 July 2005
Though I can enjoy this movie at certain bright points in the acting, it is not an original storyline. The whole conclusion of my fandom for the first Toa was not very satisfying, but I liked it. I hope Lego can do better in story and in acting in the future. I must say the visual fire-works were amazing. I don't think anyone could boast of doing better. If criticism was cattle, I'd have a herd for this movie. But there were bright points that were worth the painful while. Michael Dobson probably had the best vocal performance out of all. His Kopaka was what balanced the good and bad performances in the film. Here comes the criticism. My main animation criticism is the gestures mostly of Tahu. Tahu was very womanly, in gestures and lines, and I found it a little amusing. Pohatu and Onua seemed to wait a little too patiently for each others lines. Gali overacted by minor degrees. Lewa was good and basic, and a little Mata-nui religious. Takua was a little over dramatic at times, but that was expected. Kopaka had a few flaws at first meeting. Music was cunningly Bionicle, and it is one of the highest rises, and you forget it is there, which smooths out rough spots. All of it together makes a feast for longing fan eyes, but not always their ears. This is a story for the faint of heart. This is Mata-nui's Lord of the Rings.

This movie is terrible and an 80 minute long commercial
ryanwilliamcox30 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Now, I loved Bionicles while I was growing up. Building and playing with them were one of my favorite past-times, so of course my little 7-year old self watched this movie on repeat while playing with the toys that were in the movie.

Now I'm 19 years old and watching this movie I have to say. This movie sucks.

This movie has NOT aged well. In fact this movie is bad enough to the point where if I had a time machine, I would go back in time and smack myself around for watching this stupid, stupid movie.

So let's start off with one major problem. The characters. No matter how you look at it there is not one character who gives a memorable performance or even one that is mediocre. They all feel very archetypal and mundane. The Toas all feel flat, Jalah and Tekuah (or however the hell you spell their names) have voices and actions that make you either want to beat your head against a wall or strangle something nearby.

Not to mention the boy who becomes the Toa of Light... is unworthy. If anything Jalah is more deserving of the title, he didn't falter and give up in his quest, he sacrificed EVERYTHING for his friend, and even paid with his life at one point (before they pulled a deus ex machina and brought him back) to save someone. What did Tekuah, the Toa of Light do? Beat Makuta in a game.

That's it. Truly a hero to go down in the history books.

The animation is sub par at best. The characters look accurate to their toys but they move about awkwardly and not as freely as they should. The constant use of slow-motion is an eyesore and gets old QUICK, and the battle scenes leave something to be desired. All the fights feel anti-climactic and like they have 20 minutes of better fighting footage but don't use it for God knows what reason.

It's a shameless plug to sell more toys. But even that's not an excuse for this poor excuse for a film. We saw the same thing with Ninja Turtles and Transformers, but those at the very least had likable characters with an increasingly interesting storyline, especially with the films. This? This is just bad. And I mean BAD.

So please. Play with some Bionicles if you want to have some fun, they're really cool. But for the love of everything that is holy don't watch this movie. It's really, really bad.

Annoying but fun
cameron-burn4 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
As a true Bionicle fan who prefers the newer style of writing in the bionicle saga, it was great to watch my younger brothers Bionicles:Mask of light film again as it brought back sweet memories. But as sweet as those memories maybe, now I am older I can truly understand the complexity of the amazing storyline that Greg Farshtey,( author of the bionicle books and comics) managed to craft together here. It is ashame that the complexity of the storyline is halted by some rather poorly directed scenes which involve Takua and Jaller(yet to be Toa Inika/Mahri)just aimlessly searching for the7th toa when Takua is thee 7th toa! Yes, I agree, this is the most kiddiest and most "fun" of the bionicle movies because at that time the directors didn't expect adults to enjoy bionicles just as much as children do.

This film is great in terms of a nice style of animation which improves throughout the films and lots of great locations to ponder on in the great island of Mata Nui as well as the brilliant storyline and imaginative characters. What also stuns me about this film is the vibrant colours and sounds which make it so fun and wonderful too watch.

However, every good has its bad, and there are just as much bads in this film as goods. For instance, the rahkshi are horribly wrong and look completely different from the toys and the voice acting is so annoying! Plus the ending goes on too long and the director just hasn't made it interesting enough with not enough action and too much just standing there doing nothing pointless scenes. The Toa Nuva aren't in it enough and Takua is too annoying for a 7th toa so I was glad when he didn't appear in future bionicle storeys.

Now as I finish these comments I am left to ponder on the annoying drone of "Takua! Takua!"

Odd virtues
Delysid8 October 2003
Not a terrible film -- my 10 year old boy loved it, and he would be the target demographic, so I guess they hit the spot. Pretty dull for an adult though.

Hard to relate to animated lego characters, even mod high-tech ones.

I thought the choice of the three great virtues of the Bionicle world was a bit odd -- unity, duty, and destiny. Am I the only one who thinks those sound just a bit fascistic? Especially destiny. What about freedom, equality, justice, etc.?

Oh well, it will sell Lego. Kind of dull for a movie, but not bad for a 74-minute advertisement. Could have been a lot worse.

Lego Lord of the Rings is pretty good
Sweet_Honey_Iced_tea11 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The title really describes a lot of the movie, as both movies have similar plots; A short main character and his friend are sent by an old man to bring a gold thing somewhere, while the main villain watches the protagonist from afar, along with sending his minions after them. The main character is helped along his journey by multiple other characters from other parts of the setting, and the Main protagonist and antagonist interact from a distance, one of the Protagonist's ally's sacrifices his life to save the life of the protagonist, and the protagonist comes into his own as a hero. Lord of the Rings is amazing, and this is also pretty solid, It could have better animation for the time, but even then, this isn't a big company like disney or dreamworks, and the character design goes really well for the setting, they truly feel bionic!

In short, I think Lego Lord of the Rings is good, but I think the other 2 bionicle movies made by this company are much better. I recommend.

Wow, Lego has gotten better
ericstevenson26 October 2016
I admit to not knowing much about the Lego spin off, Bionicle. I just know that it's a toy series made by Lego featuring different designs and working on having a big story. I can't help but be reminded of how awesome "The Lego Movie" was, because this can't hold a candle to it. It was weird how this set up all this new mythology in something that was originally just goofy and nonsensical. Now, I do appreciate what they tried to do with this movie. They're taking a story driven toy franchise and adapting it. The thing is, this movie comes off as so clichéd.

I couldn't remember any of the characters' names. To be fair, they are pretty hard to remember! It features these characters go on a journey to find a mask and they learn about themselves and destiny and sacrifice and stuff. I'm sorry, but it just seems like I've seen all of this before. While it's by no means an awful film, it might just be that I've seen so many movies that I see these tropes everywhere. I guess the CGI isn't bad. It does come off as too goofy sometimes. It's weird how what is technically the first Lego movie isn't all that good. Maybe the theatrically released film was too good for me. While the film wasn't offensive and mostly harmless, I think you can just skip this and watch the awesome Lego movie instead. **

Not bad at all for it's target audience
bruce-kristie5 October 2003
First I need to say that I know way more about Bionicles that any adult should. I have an autistic son and anyone who knows autism knows that obssessive compulsive behavior comes with it. Well, his obsession (one of them anyway) is Bionicle. I know their names, their skills, where they come from, you name it. You can't go into any room in my house without stepping on a Bionicle. Anyway, I of course had to get the dvd the day it came out and was as excited as my son to watch it. The animation is first rate for a direct-to-video movie. Of course it's not Pixar but it wasn't supposed to be. The storyline is somewhat juvenile and you definately need to know the backstory to know what the heck is going on but the target audience is juveniles who know the story. All in all I liked it. After repeated viewings I'm getting a little tired of it but my son and our other kids do enjoy it and I think it's a well made movie that delivers what it promises. It never claims to be more than it is and from what I've seen on tv and the web, they aren't trying to push it on anyone other than Bionicle fans. I have to give LEGO some credit for that. They know who is going to like it and they're happy with that.

If you or your kids like the toys then the movie is for you. If you don't, well, wait for Finding Nemo.

Cool Effects, Boring Movie. For 7-Year-Old Boys At Best.
filmbuff-057065 July 2023
Apparently this is a movie that my same-age cousin grew up on, because a couple years ago my Uncle had a garage sale and had all of his old DVDs out for sale, this being one of them. I bought a bunch (25 actually), but this is one that I left because I had no interest in it.

However, I found Bionicle: Mask of Light at a used DVD store later on, and I watched it a few nights later to kill the evening after a long work day dishwashing.

I paid a dollar for it, and it wasn't really even worth that. I didn't expect a masterpiece, but even then I was disappointed by how poor quality this movie was.

The movie is low budget, and it shows. The animation looks like a video game. Some things look cool, like some character designs and lava in one scene, but overall, it looked like a cheap product.

The plot was also a little too complex for me. I get that it was about this toy figure following a mask to the "7th Toa", but it was hard for me to get what all the events were about.

Part of this issue was keeping all the characters straight. No one is named Bob or Timmy or John. Instead, we have characters like Takua, Makuta, and Jaller. When these characters were named, I had a hard time following who was who, especially when multiple ones are named Toa. (4 are listed on IMDB.) Having at least 7 Toas makes it hard to distinguish them.

The most disappointing factor though was the most important thing- the entertainment value. I found Bioncle to be a real bore. It went by semi-decently (Thank God it was only 70 minutes long), but I constantly checked the time stamp as I watched this, waiting for it to hit past an hour. I probably won't even remember this movie that well in a few days.

Bionicle was clearly meant for 7-year-old boys. I can't see many girls caring for this, or any other male demographic. I'm a guy and I missed the deadline 17 years ago. Even then, I feel like 7-year-old boys deserve better entertainment than this.

While Bionicle has its moments, and some of the animation is neat, I can't recommend it. I've seen worse movies, like Step Brothers, (I actually made this comparison while watching the movie), but I have no desire to see this again.

In fact, I ate half a bag of cheese balls as I watched this movie. That was the highlight of my viewing experience.

Reverse Recommendations: When I was 7 years old, I enjoyed animated movies like Toy Story and The Great Mouse Detective. Both of these are still great. I suggest watching those instead.

Bionicle
DesertDogMedia2 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Title: Bionicle: Mask of Light

Directed by: Terry Shakespeare

Storyline: From the get go we are thrown into a spoken narrative to give us the exposition of who the Bionicle are, not necessarily what they are but who they are. After the narrative we are introduced to two Matoran Takua and Jalla, they will be the main focus for the movie, but you also hear a reference from Jalla at the start that will not make sense unless you know the franchise and think about it. The way to explain a Matoran is they are basically the children versions of Bionicle, whereas Toa as the adults and Turaga are the elders Jalla is looking for Takua and finds him, but Takua sets off a trap to get a mask and ends up having to be rescued by Toa Tahu. They then start playing a interesting variant of hockey, until the mask is revealed then the old wise Turaga send the two matoran on a quest to find its owner. The big bad of the movie, Makuta finds out about the mask and the 7th Toa and sends his dark minion children to go to hunt down the mask. Toa Gali finds out about Makuta's dark forces and has to get to Ta- Koro before they do, but for some unexplained reason they can hover, while she has to swim. She gets to Ta-Koro in time and is able to get them to sound the alarm before the attack, in which the Tahu and Gali get beaten around before the Rahkshi (Makuta's children) leave after poisoning Tahu. Takua and Jalla make it through the jungle with the help of Toa Lewa and make it to the ice fields where they are ambushed by Rahkshi again, but Toa Kopaka steps in at the last minute and freezes the Rahkshi solid. They make their way along Oni-Koro highway which are tunnels where Makuta tries to get inside the head of Takua to make him feel like he isn't worthy. This then works as he then splits away from Jalla and heads for Oni-Koro through the tunnels whereas Jalla goes somewhere else. This is where Takua is ambushed by the second set of Rahkshi which are much more capable at taking out the Toa than the last set. A mixture between a blast from one of the Rahkshi and the poison from earlier causes Tahu to start attacking his own side while the rest are trying to deal with the Rahkshi. They are able to save Tahu and get him back to normal as Takua meets back up with Jalla after having a change of heart. But just as Takua and Jalla get to where they need to be both sets of Rahkshi are waiting for them, but the Toa arrive in time to fend them off. Jalla makes a heroic sacrifice to save Takua who finally decides to embrace his destiny and becomes the 7th Toa, the Toa of light, which was expected and no expected at the same time. He then heads down into the darkness to confront Makuta, instead of a final fight they play another game of interesting hockey, this leads to the Toa of Light putting his mask on Makuta and combining the darkness and light to create some odd abomination of a being. They are able to awaken Mata Nui but the Toa of Light has to sacrifice himself to do so, but he is then brought back from his Disney death by the Turaga and Toa holding hands in a circle and saying a few words...

Acting: The voice acting was OK, nothing all too special about it, but everyone did their part

Animation: The whole movie was made using CGI and it works well and holds up decently for a cartoon-ish mechanical look. They did a good job giving the characters emotion, especially as it would be quite bland and boring without the ability to convey emotion. But just as with normal movies there are a hell of a lot of continuity errors.

Length: 70 minutes

Overall Feel: This isn't a movie for beginners, this isn't a movie for the people who only casually play with the toys. This is a movie for the fans, only fans and dedicated collectors would get any of the references made or understand who the characters are and what they are like. A non fan could grasp the concept of Bionicle, they might not understand it fully, but the movie would give them a standard concept of what they are, who they are and who is the villain. The movie is a good movie, but generally it would take a fan to understand who everyone is and what their role in the franchise is. But thankfully even a not so dedicated fan could know it, it isn't a movie which only the biggest of fans would understand whats happening. A non-fan would be treated to a liner coherent storyline which a few action scenes which they can enjoy, a fan would be treated to a big screen adaptation of the Bionicle franchise's story. It is a good film, but not one you should go out of your way to see if you're not a Bionicle fan.

A word of the wise would be, not to see the sequels as it'll only get more confusing from there onwards

Awesome animation and great story
zahel_krest5 December 2005
When i saw the action figures by Lego, i thought that the story of bionicle was going to be thrash, but i was wrong. The movie "The Mask of Llight" is an superb adventure of faith, redemption and courage. The characters are really charismatic, so you can see this movie once and again. The design of the toa and the other characters is really stylish, and you wont feel disappointed about that. I can recommend you this movie because i love it, and if you like the epic stories about courage and friendship, take a look on this....you wont regret that.

But i need to be realistic. If you just like toi see blood, raw stories or you need to listen a bad word each 10 minutes, then you must find another movie, because this is amovie for kids and teenagers....

A movie for the fans
Raven_Shield19 September 2003
This movie isn't for everyone, that's true, but this isn't necessarily based on an age-value, but an experience-value. Mask of Light is a movie more so created for the FANS of the Bionicle series. It isn't impossible that somebody unfamiliar would enjoy the movie, but it does make it more difficult for them to really bond with the characters and the story line. Of course it would promote the toy line in SOME sense, that's only logical considering the movie is a PRODUCT of the toy line, but it does not revolve around that aspect. The character's features were altered to take on a more lifelike state, yet without straying too far from their familiar appearances that fans have come to know them by. As far as expressions go, the characters display emotion beautifully. The way that the masks were designed, as they were to suit the film, allowed for obvious expression that the actual toys could not replicate. Overall, the film was an excellent rendition of the Bionicle world + characters, amazing soundtrack, smooth flowing animation, and rich in design. Bionicle has been around for some years now. This movie didn't just POP UP from a new and showing story. Development of the characters + the legends has evolved greatly. If this movie had been made to COMPLETELY suit those unfamiliar with Bionicle, it wouldn't have been set in the time area that it had, or have gone straight to home video.

Bionicle Rules
bound-to-sanzo23 April 2005
I'm a huge fan of Bionicle when it first appeared as a Lego creation. The movie previews didn't appeal to me at first, but when I did watch it, I'm glad I did! The story line is a bit young, but the over all effect is fantastic! The characters each have their own unique personalities, which can be related to while watching. The animation is absolutely brilliant, I would love to work on something like that.

If you loved the movie, then I suggest reading the books of Bionicle. Their short and easy to understand, but they are a good read.

My favourite character would be Tahu and Jaller. Tahu, the brave but impatient hero, leads the group but can cause trouble along the way.

10/10 It's Okay
NinthGlaive23 January 2016
Basically LOTR with Bionicle. The animation is a bit cheap yet oddly charming. The many character's range from annoying to cliché to surprisingly good. As a kid this was my favorite anime. My favorite Toa was the red one because he had those two fire swords he could use as a surfboard. My least favorite Toa was the rock one because who the hell wants power over rocks you already have a Toa of Earth and rocks are apart of the Earth what the hell just fuse the two together. Actually wait after reading the Wiki the rock one is way better than the earth one because all the earth one does is control the soil. What the heck kind of power is that? Hey wait a minute there's also a water Toa and an ice Toa... What the hell Lego ice isn't even an element it's quite literally just water that got too cold.

Anyways give this a watch it taught me many things as a kid like how sand and fire makes glass.

Good.
kin-283254 September 2015
When I was 6, (in 2007, Toa Mahri saga) I was in the hospital with a deadly case of asthma, Then, they had more than 40 movies, I found this one, and the whole month I was there, it would be the only thing I'd watch, I take a look back at it now, not that good, but it helped me through my asthma, and got me out of there, There's something about this movie... The movie is about 2 Matoran, Jaller and Gukko(Takua) Adventuring to find the 7th Toa: Takanuva, Toa of light. It's a great movie with a plot somewhat similar to Lord of the Rings. I don't like Lord of the Rings, very long and boring, but there's something about this movie that engages me. I like it. The Animation doesn't look that great and the Toa don't look like their actual product toy. The Toa seem a little bit too tall, let's see if I can pinpoint what's wrong... I think the legs may be too thin, and the arms too thin, also, the torso's aren't exactly the shape they should be. Lets just say, This movie isn't great, but it's great, if that makes any sense.

Does justice to the Bionicle saga
briancham19943 June 2020
This film was everything I wanted from the Bionicle saga. It showed all the characters and settings that we had come to love from previous media. These were very detailed and fleshed out. Each character had their own distinct personality and I loved all their interactions that hint at the expansive backstory. You can tell that they already know each other, already have been through a lot together and already have ways of interacting with each other. This is a film for the fans - it just throws you into Mata Nui and doesn't bother to introduce or explain anything. It wouldn't even be possible since the Bionicle universe is so expansive. It just starts right off with Jaller, Takua, kanohi, Tahu, Ta-Koro, matoran and kolhii - and it just gets crazier from there. This means the pace can pick up very quickly but it also means it will alienate any newcomers.

Does everything it needs to do
mooeymouse28 March 2022
It never had a big budget, so the animation is by default not gonna be as good as Pixar, but for what it's worth it's a good movie. For 70 minutes, I could watch this and enjoy it, because it's a kids movie that I can find enjoyable. I know that some people don't like it for it's less than stellar animation, or slightly rushed plot, but at least if you didn't have a good time watching the movie, you had a good time laughing at it.

Great film.... perhaps for the wrong reasons?

Warning: Spoilers
Let me start by saying, before you deem me completely inept - the rating of 10 out of 10 for this movie, does not by any means put it in the same level as the great masterpieces of all time.

In fact, I am not really sure this is a great film per say, and it can possibly be based a great deal on nostalgic feelings rather than quality. I did love this film, and the Bionicle brand overall, when I was growing up.

I am not.one who is that much into nostalgia overall, though, and for what is is, its qualities and its genre, I do belive it is a pretty neat animated feature. It features a clever mix of technology in a fantasy setting, and has some pretty impressive animation and voice acting, given its budget and capabilities.

Overall, the rating is based in comparison to other children's films in the genre, for which I think this does its job pretty well, and perhaps a little due to nostalgic reasons. For what it is, though, I do belive it should offer a pretty good time! But maybe that's just my six year old self reminiscing...
