Why does Jimmy McNulty appear in this series so infrequently? Billed first in the credits, Dominic West began the programme as its star. As we have discussed, McNulty – at his most basic, a roguish, talented Irish-American cop – was an easy "in" for the viewer,

The Hannibal Lecter Collection (Blu-ray Review)

“It rubs the lotion on its skin.” “Now it places the lotion in the basket.” Anyway, enough of my usual at home internet surfing activities. I’ve got a review to write damn it, and write one I shall.
Freshly hitting store shelves and web retailers nationwide is MGM’s latest Hannibal Lecter Collection, now on Blu-ray, just in time for the Halloween and holiday season.
Like the previous DVD collection of the same heading, this new collection features Manhunter (the first Thomas Harris adaptation featuring the now notorious Hannibal Lecter, then portrayed rather effectively by Brian Cox), Silence Of The Lambs (ushering the ever talented Sir Anthony Hopkins into the maniacal role of Lecter), and Hannibal now with picture and sound so stunningly clear you can almost smell Clarice Starling’s Evian skin cream and L'Air du Temps perfume.
While I’d like to tell you that this collection

What are the 25 Best Book to Film Adaptations?

The Telegraph has posted a nice little list of what they consider to be the 25 best book to film adaptations and while most of the titles will likely not surprise you, perhaps the order in which they are placed will.
Considering this is the Internet, the most discussed placement is sure to be The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the 25th spot while the Harry Potter filmed franchise comes in three spots earlier at 22.
Unfortunately, I haven't read many of the books from this list, but I have seen all but a few of the films. I will say I am far more partial to Stephen King's "The Shining" than I was to Kubrick's adaptation and I hardly remember the Harry Potter books well enough to even say if I think they are great adaptations as much as I have simply enjoyed both the films and the books.

Child’s Play, Misery, Hannibal and more make their debut on Blu-ray

Some scary, scary films arrive on Blu-ray on September 15th, just in time for Halloween if Halloween was a month and a half early. Wet your horror whistle with Child’s Play, Hannibal Lecter Anthology: Hannibal/The Silence of the Lambs/Manhunter, Misery, Wrong Turn and Wrong Turn 2: Dead End.
When Child’s Play first arrived in 1988, I couldn’t even look at my stuffed friend affectionately called “My Buddy” for months. He’s probably in a landfill somewhere covered in coffee grounds. That’s a really sad image but that’s where scary things go to die: large piles of crap.
Revolving around a toy who becomes possessed by the spirit of a dirtbag killer, Child’s Play become and instant classic and by the time it arrived on VHS and scared little kids beyond belief. Why were little kids watching Child’s Play? Liberals.

If you've upgraded your system to include a Blu-ray player, then this is a pretty good week for you as August 4th will see the release of a few old friends including Blade II, Hannibal Rising, and Mimic. On the newer end of the spectrum, we have sci-fi/horror hybrids Alien Uprising and The Mutant Chronicles along with watch-it-at-your-own-risk fare like Cravings, The Chaos Experiment, Nature's Grave, and the anthology Slices.
If you have kids (or even if you don't), then Daffy Duck's Quackbusters is a must buy along with the Evil Christmas duo of Psycho Santa and Satan Claus. Once the kiddies are tucked safely in bed, then you'll want to pop in Hot Blood Sundae, which garnered a site record three different scores from Foy in his review, depending on how you choose to watch the flick. Rounding things out is 1982's Trapped, starring cult favorite Henry Silva.

Ranking the Films of Michael Mann
In advance of this Wednesday's release of Public Enemies I thought it was only fitting to take a look back at the films from director Michael Mann and see how they would sort themselves out in a quick ranking session and what a wild last few days it has been.
On Thursday, last week, I saw Public Enemies, later that night I watched Manhunter, the next day I watched Thief and The Last of the Mohicans -- then the weekend arrived. In a matter of 48 hours I watched Heat, The Insider, Ali, Miami Vice and Collateral all in an attempt to make sure my mind was completely refreshed and ready to sort things out.
You will notice I am only ranking nine films since I have never seen The Keep (1983) and it wasn't available through Netflix

Anthony Hopkins will reprise his role as Hannibal Lecter in a new movie to be directed by Ridley Scott (who apparently is a knight, who would've thought?), according to ContactMusic.com. This will be the second Hannibal collaboration for the two, having already demystified the fear behind Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal.
Where they'll get their material from, I'm not entirely sure, as Hollywood has tapped dry the well of Thomas Harris novels, even going so far as to release a movie based on "Hannibal Rising" only two months after its release. So unless Harris has another book in the works (which he probably doesn't, as he usually takes at least six years to write something), it looks as though Scott will be outsourcing the new story.
Not many details have been released thus far, but given Scott's recent track record, I can't say I'm excited. And as for Anthony Hopkins,

Update: Hannibal Lecter Set to Return to the Big Screen?

It's being reported that Anthony Hopkins is teaming up with director Ridley Scott to bring his most infamous villain Hannibal Lecter back to the big screen.
Hopkins will reprise his cannibalistic serial killer for the fourth time in a second sequel to the 1991 hit film The Silence Of The Lambs, for which he won a Best Actor Oscar.
Hopkins also appeared in 2001's Hannibal before starring in the 2002 prequel Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising.
And actress Cate Blanchett has been tipped to take over the role of Clarice Starling after Jodie Foster pulled out to direct Claire Danes in the forthcoming Flora Plum.
A spokesperson for film-makers Universal says, "Hopkins and Scott are both very committed. We like what we've got, and the revised script is really, really good."
Studio confirmation? Sounds like some fava beans and liver are in the near future

'Pearl Earring' Director Webber to Helm New 'Wuthering Heights'

News out of Cannes is that Peter Webber, director of Girl with the Pearl Earring and Hannibal Rising, has been signed to film Olivia Hetreed's Wuthering Heights script. The project's been batted around for awhile -- last year, John Maybury (The Jacket) was supposed to direct, with Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman as leads.
But Hollywood is a fickle mistress, and Portman pulled out, followed by Fassbender. The newly minted version of Emily Bronte's 1847 tearjerker about the thwarted, moor-side love between heartstrong Cathy and her brooding half-brother, Heathcliff was referenced in the mega-blockbuster Twilight, so it only makes sense that this new version is patently aimed at that audience.
Now, instead of the more mature Fassbender and Portman, the principals will be played by Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick and Quantum of Solace's Strawberry Fields, Gemma Arterton. So think Twilight, only without the sparkly vampires and Mormon chastity vibe,

'Wuthering Heights' Finds a Helmer in Peter Webber

Peter Webber's directorial career includes the awful prequel Hannibal Rising, the forgotten Scarlett Johansson feature Girl with a Pearl Earring and a lone episode of "Six Feet Under" so I am not sure how excited any of us should be over the news he is directing Wuthering Heights, an adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel.
About a year ago John Maybury (The Edge of Love) was attached to direct the film, but he has since dropped off. On top of that, almost a year ago exactly Natalie Portman, who was once attached to the film as Catherine Earnshaw, also dropped off the feature. Portman's attachment was, at the time, considered to be a driving force and when she dropped off the film's lifespan looked bleak. Obviously things have changed.
Stepping into the role vacated by Portman will be Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) with Ed Westwick playing Heathcliff, a

"Gossip Girl" hunk Ed Westwick is set to star as Heathcliff on drama movie "Wuthering Heights". It is a film adaptation based on Emily Bronte's 1847 novel with the same title. In addition to Ed, Gemma Arterton, who played Strawberry Fields on "Quantum of Solace", is chosen to be the leading actress, Cathy.
About the role of Cathy, it was initially given to Natalie Portman. However, she was then replaced by Abbie Cornish due to scheduling clash. Later, producers of the flick, Robert Bernstein and Douglas, decided to look for young actress, so 23-year-old Artenton was picked up for the role.
Additionally, Variety reported that Peter Webber, who previously directed "Hannibal Rising", was appointed to be the director of the film. The flick itself is scheduled to be released in 2010.
"Wuthering Heights" centers on poor young boy Heathcliff, who is adopted by the wealthy Earnshaw family. Living together at a luxurious house,

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Regarding that, um, interesting scene of Kirk
(Chris Pine) in his underwear in the new Star Trek: since the
movie supposedly takes place in the 22nd century, that's presumably what
men will be wearing then, right? So where can I get the underwear of the future
... today? -- Steve, Philadelphia,
Pa
A: Personally, the Flying Monkey is holding out hope
that the not-so-distant future will see a return to the simple beauty
that is a pair of tighty-whities, but I suppose I should just be thankful that
the new Smokin' Hot Kirk wasn't wearing saggy, baggy boxers.
Unfortunately, the undies worn by Smokin' Hot Kirk in the movie were
made of pure Romulan silk and were created by the Edoian designer Rakop in
the year 2250. In other words, they don't actually exist yet.

Film.com has a great article about about the pros and the cons that can happen when you switch directors in the middle of a movie franchise nbspThe Twilight franchise is only one film old and already there are personnel changes. Director Catherine Hardwicke was replaced by Chris Weitz for the first sequel New Moon and now its just been announced that part three Eclipse will have yet another director. His name is David Slade and hes actually a good fit His last film was 30 Days of Night which was about vampires and his film before that was Hard Candy which was about a teenage girl being stalked and preyed upon by a much older man. Combine the two of those and youve basically got Twilight. It remains to be seen whether the behindthescenes shuffling will affect the quality of the Twilight films. In the meantime lets look at history

Uma Thurman as Medusa, Pierce Brosnan as Chiron. And No, This is Not "Clash of the Titans"

It may sound like a remake of "Clash of the Titans" but this new film has a more contemporary take on Greek gods and goddesses. Fox 2000 has just assembled a cast for their fantasy adventure "Percy Jackson."
So Miss Uma is playing Medusa (I always love this fierce character) while Pierce Brosnan is going to play Chiron the Centaur.
Sean Bean ("Lord of the Rings" franchise) is playing Zeus!
Other members of the cast are Kevin McKidd ("Hannibal Rising") will play Poseidon and Melina Kanakerides ("CSI: NY") is joining as Athena.
Chris Columbus (the first two "Harry Potter" films) is attached to direct.
According to Variety:
Story centers on Poseidon's 12-year-old half-human son, who embarks on a quest across modern-day America to save his mother, return Zeus' stolen lightning bolt and prevent a deadly war between the gods.
Interesting, albeit very Harry Potter-ish with Greek gods this time.

I had not watched Silence of the Lambs for the longest time before the latest Fox Blu-ray release found its way into my player. The reason being my DVD version would begin skipping and bouncing around just as Starling (Jodie Foster) would enter Buffalo Bill's (Ted Levine) house. Suffice to say I would never get to that fantastic night-vision sequence as the disc would stop outright before I ever had a chance. You want to talk about frustrating, that was one way to assuredly piss me off. However, Fox has lifted my spirits with a Blu-ray release that looks and sounds fantastic and could only be improved upon if Criterion were to once again obtain the rights to the feature and make available the wealth of features they had on their now out-of-print anamorphic release.
To go into the story of Silence of the Lambs at this point seems a

'MacGyver' the Movie Is Happening

"MacGyver" is getting a big screen treatment. The feature film version of the popular '80s TV series about a laid-back, but extremely resourceful secret agent will be produced by Raffaella De Laurentiis, daughter of "Hannibal Rising" producer Dino De Laurentiis, through her Raffaella Productions along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff.
While there is yet writer attached to the project, the studio reportedly look forward to find a script that can acknowledge how the concept has staked a place into pop culture yet still makes for a serious and fun adventure movie. Of the film, New Line Cinema's Richard Brener stated, "We think we're a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise."
"MacGyver" was a science-oriented adventure series that ran from 1985 to 1992 on ABC. Starring Richard Dean Anderson as Angus MacGyver, the series followed MacGyver as

He also appeared in Batman Begins as Joe Chill, the man responsible for the death of Bruce Wayne's parents.

Neil Marshall's Centurion Finds a Cast: Fassbender, West, Kurylenko

Moving on from Doomsday, British writer/director Neil Marshall's next feature film will be that of Centurion, a Britain-set sword-and-sandals thriller. Filling up the cast for the film will be Michael Fassbender (of 300 and Hunger), Dominic West (of 300, Hannibal Rising, and Punisher: War Zone) and Olga Kurylenko (of Hitman, Max Payne, and Quantum of Solace). Production is expected to start sometime later this year. You see, I have a love / hate relationship with Neil Marshall - I loved The Descent, but really hated Doomsday, so I'm just not sure what to expect with this and if it'll actually be any good.
Centurion, billed as a thriller set during the Roman invasion of Britain in A.D. 117, tells the story of Quintus Dias, sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, who marches north with General Virilus' legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from

Prequels Are Risky: So How Did Underworld Do?

Prequels are nothing new in the world of Hollywood. However, they've always had mixed results. Few can deny that the most popular prequel has to be from the Star Wars universe. We all watched with glued eyes as Anakin Skywalker went from an innocent kid in Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace to the dramatic transformation into Darth Vader in Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. There have been others. Hannibal Rising, Batman Begins, Carlito's Way: Rise to Power; the list goes on. So when it was announced that Underworld was going to have its own prequel, well, I was a bit intrigued, but not overly-excited. After seeing Underworld: Evolution, I simply lost all interest. The first movie was great; the second, absolutely terrible. So how did the third installment in the franchise, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, stand up
