For years, rumors have circulated among Bob Dylan fans that a documentary about his legendary, star-studded “Rolling Thunder Revue” tour of 1975-76 was in the works, and occasional whispers had a name attached: Martin Scorsese. Now, the cat can come officially out of the bag. Variety has exclusively learned that Netflix plans to release the movie in 2019, with the director’s name actually in the title: “Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese.”
The tightly-under-wraps project is said not to be quite as much of a straightforward documentary as Scorsese’s previous Dylan film, 2005’s “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan,” which zeroed in on Dylan’s crucial 1965-66 “going electric” period. “There’s a reason the word ‘story’ appears in the title,” said a source, hinting that the director may be playing with the form more in this particular film.

It can be a special pleasure to see a documentary about a subject you already know like family. (What you want, of course, is for the movie to take you closer still.) Back in 2005, when Martin Scorsese’s No Direction Home: Bob Dylan played in two parts on PBS, I sat down to watch it thinking that I already knew more than enough about Bob Dylan (if that’s even possible). The movie was such a revelation, however, that by the time it was over, I felt I knew — really knew — Bob Dylan for maybe the first time. Taking a...

[1] A brand-new trailer has hit for Martin Scorsese's George Harrison: Living in the Material World, an HBO documentary which will air on the channel later this year. Though Harrison was known as "the quiet Beatle," as the saying goes, still waters run deep. Pulled together from interviews, performances, and never-before-seen footage, as well as interviews with friends, colleagues and peers including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Phil Spector, Yoko Ono, and Tom Petty, the film will center around the life and career of the iconic musician, producer, philanthropist, and spiritualist. Watch the video after the jump. [via First Showing [2]] Scorsese's been putting the project together since 2007, but has completed it only recently. HBO bought the North American television rights to the film earlier this summer. This won't be Scorsese's first time focusing on a famous musical figure -- he's traveled similar paths before with 2008's Rolling Stones doc Shine a Light...

You may think you know every song, every moment, every journey, but there is one story yet to be told. Its been a long-time in the making, and although it's an HBO documentary, this is totally worth featuring anyway. Yahoo (via The Playlist) has posted an official full-length trailer for Martin Scorsese's doc George Harrison: Living in the Material World, about the legendary musician, singer-songwriter, actor and producer most well known as the guitarist for the Beatles. This looks like a truly definitive documentary only Scorsese could deliver. If you're a fan of The Beatles or George Harrison, you definitely need to take a look. Watch the official trailer for Scorsese's George Harrison: Living in the Material World, via Yahoo: George Harrison: Living in the Material World was announced in 2007 and is directed by Martin Scorsese, of docs like Shine a Light, No Direction Home: Bob Dylan previously. It’s so weird when you anticipate a movie for years and years, and then you suddenly have a great, full trailer to marvel at. Such is the case with George Harrison: Living in the Material World, Martin Scorsese‘s documentary on the life and career of the Beatles guitarist, which has just received a preview at Yahoo!. And, after waiting for so long, I’m happy to report that the result looks terrific.
Much like No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, there’s a massive amount of great material that Scorsese has at his disposal. From songs to videos to photographs — so much of his life was documented for the nearly forty years that he was in the public spotlight, and it looks like we’re getting a full picture of his great work. The big Beatles fan in me is happy enough that one of my favorite directors has...

Though the word “documentarian” probably isn't the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Martin Scorsese, the man has made nearly as many docs in his career as he has fictional features, and his interest in them seems to have only grown over the years. In fact, four out of his last six directorial ventures have been rather low key docu projects, excluding his high profile Rolling Stone doc, Shine The Light. HBO Documentary Films have picked up the North American TV rights to Scorsese's latest rock 'n' roll project, George Harrison: Living in the Material World. It seems very likely that the film will see it's world premiere at the Tiff come September, but its television debut is scheduled to run in two parts on October 5th and 6th, exclusively on HBO. HBO has just snagged Martin Scorsese's documentary on the soft-spoken former Beatle and activist George Harrison, to air in two parts on October 5th and 6th of this year. Although he's no Cameron Crowe, Scorsese's dabbled in music docs before: notably with the Rolling Stones in Shine A Light and Bob Dylan: No Direction Home.

Just before the Christmas rush, HeyUGuys had the great pleasure of attending 2010’s final Alfred Dunhill BAFTA ‘A Life in Pictures’ which celebrated the sensational and enduring cinematic works of one of film history’s greatest figures, Martin Scorsese. The event was hosted by BAFTA at their lustrous Piccadilly headquarters where whiskey cocktails, champagne and movie-loving company flowed ever so freely. HeyUGuys arrived promptly in order to secure a prime seat and I was drawn like a moth to a flame to a chair which claimed to be ‘endowed by George Clooney’ – lucky chair. Broadcaster and critic Francine Stock took centre stage to introduce the eagerly anticipated film-maker and proved to be a most elegant presenter and succinct interviewer over the course of their comprehensive discussion. Scorsese made his entrance to rapturous applause which he humbly diminished with a gentle wave of his hand. When one considers he stands at...

This Sunday, the Grammy Awards will be given out for the 52nd time. Over their lifespan, nearly 8,000 tiny Victrolas have been given out to all manner of artists. This weekend's show is one of the more youth-driven and star-studded in recent memory, with Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Dave Matthews Band and the Black Eyed Peas among others performing and competing for awards.
No awards show gets it right every single time, and considering the number of awards they hand out every year, Grammy Awards history is littered with bizarre winners and strange victors. Better than you remember: Gangs of New York

We finally finished watching No Direction Home: Bob Dylan the great documentary directed by Martin Scorsese that aired on PBS in 2005. Watching this film has been a multi-year project. I started watching it with my wife before she was my wife. The film looks back at Bob Dylan's life but it got me thinking about looking forward. There's an expression often heard in edit rooms: "See apple, say apple." It refers to the practice of having the narrator talk about something and then showing that very thing. If the narrator is talking about apples, then we have to show some apples. When you extend that "see apple" concept to the whole film, your work loses depth. Example: You do a show about Donald Trump firing people and all you get is a treatise about a gigantic, throbbing ego. Entertaining for...

- I'd be willing to bet that Martin Scorsese has the same sort of passion and love affair for music as he does for film. Okay, perhaps there is a difference, but the man loves his Stones, Dylan and this time out, the one member of the fab four that gave to music as much as he gave to social causes. Variety reports that Scorsese will direct a docu project based on the life of George Harrison (producer for Monty Python and the Holy Grail). The docu project is getting the full support Harrison's widow Olivia, and will commence perhaps not filming but the researching before the Rolling Stones doc Shine a Light gets its theatrical release. In a bid to foster a talent-friendly studio reminiscent of its '70s glory days, Paramount Pictures has signed a four-year, first-look deal with filmmaker Martin Scorsese, Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey said Tuesday.
The studio will supply Scorsese, who will continue to be based out of his New York offices, with $2.5 million a year in overhead for four years, equivalent to the studio's deal with Brad Pitt's Plan B Prods.
Scorsese has contracted to give Paramount and its specialty division Paramount Vantage -- which is run by the director's former agent, John Lesher -- first crack at all projects he directs and produces in all media, including features, made-for-DVD films, documentaries, digital content and television.
Grey has nurtured a close relationship with the filmmaker. Along with Pitt and Graham King, Grey produced The Departed, the biggest-grossing film of Scorsese's career. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the Boston-set gangster film has grossed more than $150 million worldwide in its first five weekends of release.
Grey cited his "great experience" working with Scorsese on Departed, the documentary No Direction Home: Bob Dylan and Scorsese's currently filming Rolling Stones documentary, which is set for Paramount release next year.

Scorsese's Dylan chronicle was chosen by an international jury led by chair Loren Mawhinney, a Canadian producer. For the second straight year, British producers grabbed the bulk of trophies, beating out U.S. producers during their traditional Banff Rockie award shootout. British independent producers came away with seven Banff Rockie awards in all, either for programs the Brits produced on their own or as part of co-productions.

Goodfellas movie-maker Martin Scorsese is to be honored for his work in non-fiction with a top award at the Silverdocs documentary film festival next month. The maverick director, whose documentary work includes the recent No Direction Home: Bob Dylan and rock concert classic The Last Waltz, has been hailed an inspiration and praised for his work uncovering US culture. Festival director Patricia Finneran says, "It's about telling America's story, but it's also about telling a story with artistry. I think his stories about great musical artists really help us understand our American musical culture and national consensus." Scorsese will be on hand at the festival to discuss his documentaries, and will also see The Last Waltz shown on a giant outdoor screen. Silverdocs is sponsored by the American Film Institute and the Discovery Channel and will take place between June 13 and 18 in Silver Spring, Maryland, boasting 25 premieres in 100 film screenings.

TORONTO -- As Martin Scorsese's documentary about Bob Dylan receives its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, HMV Canada has pulled the legendary artist's product from its store shelves to protest a deal to sell his new Live at the Gaslight 1962 album exclusively in Starbucks coffee shops. A spokesman for HMV Canada confirmed Monday that Dylan's albums were not being stocked or displayed on its store shelves. That move follows earlier efforts by the Toronto-based HMV Canada to protest exclusive retail rights given by The Rolling Stones, Alanis Morissette and Elton John to niche retailers, including Starbucks. The release of the new Dylan album via Starbucks comes as Scorsese's 3 1/2-hour documentary No Direction Home: Bob Dylan receives its world premiere Saturday in Toronto as part of the Masters sidebar, ahead of broadcast Sept. 26-27 on the PBS network.
