Be honest. We’ve all done it. Some of us willingly and with no apologies, while others of us are closet fans, but those reality real estate shows are popular and addictive. Perhaps it’s because they tap into a core element of the American dream, but whatever the reason, they’ve made an impact on what television looks like these days. With that said, it only seems logical that some creative soul would take this phenomenon and mash it up with another modern cultural trend.
The graphic novelists and animators Jay Lender and Micah Wright have done just that, they wrote and directed this melding of reality-based home shopping shows with found footage, faux-documentary style horror-comedy. That’s right. No, I didn’t stutter or lose my mind. This is a thing. A real thing. I know, your reaction right now is probably quite similar to mine when I first heard of this film,...

The Syfy channel has long, long been known for being the go-to network for goofy, low budget movies with outlandish hooks to them. Five to ten years ago that meant movies like Rock Monster, Ice Spiders, Snakehead Terror and Man with the Screaming Brain. That was back before the days of social media and viral content, though. You could get by with simply having a movie be about a woolly mammoth that comes back to life after a UFO crashes into it. That mutated mammoth don't hunt in the age of Twitter, though. These days a Syfy movie has to have a ridiculous premise/title and a gimmick cast to standout. That's how something like Sharknado becomes a franchise phenomenon, and it's a model the network plans to follow up with Dead 7, a zombie movie starring former '90s...

For as long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with monsters.
Horror comics are a big deal right now. Some of that can probably be attributed to the runaway success of Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s The Walking Dead – which was huge even before the television adaptation – and the fact that zombies in general are more popular than bacon. There are also recent Stephen King adaptations like The Stand and N., the ongoing Buffy the Vampire Slayer continuation of the TV show, Joe Hill’s Locke & Key, Brubaker & Phillips’ Lovecraftian noir Fatale, and “mainstream” horror comics like DC’s Swamp Thing and Animal Man. Heck, even Archie Comics has successfully launched its campy/scary Afterlife With Archie series in time for Halloween this year.

Man with the Screaming Brain is a story of greed, betrayal and revenge in a small Bulgarian town. William Cole, wealthy industrialist, winds up with part of his brain replaced by that of a Russian cab driver Yegor. The two couldn’t be more different, but they share one thing – both were killed by the same woman. Brought back to life by a mad scientist, William and Yegor form an unlikely partnership to track down their common nemesis.

The birthing of a film can be a painful process, particularly in the world of independent filmmaking, and while truncated shooting schedules, limited budgets and location challenges conspire at times to create seemingly insurmountable hurdles, nothing proves more daunting for cast and crew alike than being subject to a producer with more mood swings than a 1940’s jazz band.
Such was the case on the set of director Charlie Vaughn’s Blood Mary 3D.
Originally slated to shoot in December of 2010, executive producer Chalmers (who previously produced the Bruce Campbell flicks Man with the Screaming Brain and Alien Apocalypse) made the choice to film Bloody Mary in 3D, with production therefore being delayed until spring while logistics were being hammered out.

Chicago – My love affair with USA’s “Burn Notice” has been rocky at best. During the second season, it felt like a show that could really blossom into one of the best on cable, but it kind of plateaued a bit in the third season and has been a solid-if-unspectacular program since, never quite living up to its potential while still being entertaining. The same could be said about the prequel movie, “Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe,” airing on USA tomorrow night, April 17th, 2011.
TV Rating: 3.0/5.0
Having been a longtime fan of the “Evil Dead” fans and enough of a Bruce Campbell admirer to have not only seen “Man with the Screaming Brain” but have read his autobiography (“If Chins Could Kill”), I love that “Burn Notice” has brought him to a different, wider audience and was thrilled at the idea of a Campbell movie appearing somewhere other than SyFy.

New York – March 1, 2011 – Since 2002, Syfy viewers have experienced mutated sharks, mosquito men, alligators as big as blimps, vengeful demon moths, pterodactyls, werewolves, dragons and really, really big snakes. We all know him. We all love him. In fact he may be, despite what certain beer commercials say, the most interesting man in the world. His name is Bruce Campbell and he’s the world’s most famous B-Movie actor! Today we’ll be counting the Top Ten Bruce Campbell Roles, starting with number ten…..
10. My Name Is Bruce (Movie, 2007)
Despite being poorly reviewed (by me included), This still makes the list as it is uncut, unadulterated Bruce Campbell in it’s purest form. The plot is a little iffy and the ending is nothing more than a B-Movie send up, but who gives a damn about plot when Bruce Campbell is kicking ancient monster ass in a Hawaiian Shirt?
9. Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters (Movie, 2007)
8. The X-Files (TV Series, “Terms of Endearment”, 1999)
7. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. (TV Series, 1993-1994)

Syfy recently announced plans for upcoming movies called Dinoshark and Sharktopus. Rejoice, B-movie fans! These are destined to be classics of the awesomely awful made-for-tv movie genre. But can they join the ranks of the 10 greatest Syfy movie titles/tagline combos? Because these are pure genius, and 100 percent real: 10. Disaster Zone: Volcano in New York: "Get ready for a hot time in the big City." See also: Magma: Volcanic Disaster, NYC: Tornado Terror. 9. Dog Soldiers: "A squad of British soldiers, training in an isolated Scottish glen, find lycanthropic action under a full moon." See also: Hellhounds, Cerberus. 8. Warbirds: "Before...

If you live in Portland, Oregon (as I do) or close by, or just happen to be in the area this weekend, make sure to check out the Zompire Undead Film Festival being held May 15-17, 2009, at the classic Hollywood Theater (where Bruce Campbell himself has premiered and hosted showings of The Man With The Screaming Brain and My Name Is Bruce).
“I've been running the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival for fifteen years and a couple of years ago I decided to do a festival centered around the undead,” says Andrew Migliore, founder of Zompire, now in its fourth year. “I wanted to show the undead in hopefully new and unusual ways... to educate and entertain. My approach (to selecting the films) was let us assume we are all preparing for Z-Day and that these films are really training films on what and what not to do in the event of an undead uprising.

At the just-concluded American Film Market in Santa Monica, Fango caught a screening of two over-the-top scenes from Drag Me To Hell, Sam Raimi’s eagerly awaited return to screen terror, which opens on May 29 from Universal. From what we watched, Drag Me To Hell, which stars Alison (Beowulf) Lohman, Justin (Jeepers Creepers) Long, Sage (The Manson Family) Stallone, Jessica (Cloverfield) Lucas and David (Mighty Joe Young) Paymer, features the same mix of horror and humor that Raimi mined so well in his Evil Dead trilogy.
Clip #1 takes place in a deserted parking garage. The heroine, Christine (Lohman), is trapped inside her car, while a cackling gypsy woman (Bonnie Aarons) assaults her from the back seat. Christine slams on the accelerator and sends the old hag flying over the front seat, slamming her face-first into the dashboard and knocking out the crone’s dentures (!).
