Genndy Tartakovsky has been a revolutionary voice in the world of animation, creating some of the most celebrated cartoon shoes on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. Popular shows of the 2000s including Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Sym-Bionic Titan, and recent entries like Primal, and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal were his creations.

His ongoing show Primal has been a big hit on Adult Swim. The visionary creator/ director drew a lot of inspiration from some of the cinematic greats like Star Wars and Sergio Leone films. Interestingly, Tartakovsky based the behavior and mechanics of the dinosaur Fang in his show on how Max Fleischer’s Superman carried himself in the 40s animated show.

Genndy Tartakovsky says all animators are not good enough with their work like him. In a recent interview, Tartakovsky gave a few pointers on why animators end up coming nowhere near him in their animated projects. Coming from the Unicorn: Warriors Eternal creator, who has explored the field for nearly three decades, these pointers make for a great lesson in animation.

Known for his work on several Star Wars projects, Dave Filoni has become a key figure in shaping the space opera. Starting with his work on animated projects such as The Clone Wars and Rebels, he has also ventured into live-action projects The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, and has since assumed the role of chief creative officer at Lucasfilm.

However, when he initially received a call with an offer to work with Lucasfilm Animation, Filoni’s skepticism nearly caused him to overlook the opportunity, as he refused to believe that Lucasfilm Animation even existed and that the offer was potentially a prank.

Genndy Tartakovsky's 2001 animated series "Samurai Jack" is probably one of the best of its era. The series boasted a peculiar and stoic tone, with the title hero (Phil Lamarr) staying quiet for vast blocks of the show. Samurai Jack was lost in the distant future, thanks to the sorcery of a tricky trickster god named Aku, and a lot of the series was devoted to Jack's exploration of strange, new alien settings. "Samurai Jack." also featured a unique, neo-cubist aesthetic; characters didn't have black-line outlines, and backgrounds were often abstract and blocky. Fans will also hasten to add the overwhelmingly awesome action of "Samurai Jack." If one is animating with blocky shapes and abstract backgrounds, the action can be just as stylized. The fight scenes on "Samurai Jack" are the stuff of legend.
"Samurai Jack" ran until 2004, and there had long been plans to adapt the series into a live-action feature film.

The resemblance between the Star Wars franchise and Helldivers 2 is uncanny, if someone doesn’t know any better, they could have passed as part of a shared universe, and fans have pointed that out extensively with the Clone Wars by remaking a whole sequence based on the beloved animated show.
With the fact that Helldivers look like Clone troopers and even fight extraterrestrial and invincible enemies, a connection was bound to be made.
Star Wars fans are more likely to be captivated by the lore of Helldivers, as they also feature a Galactic War and massive space battles.
This game is certainly right up their alley, and it feels like the game was made for them and other enthusiasts of intergalactic warfare and immersive action. The Clone Wars was the height of the Star Wars prequel trilogy and has been a fan favorite ever since.

An animated video of Helldivers 2 gameplay has been circulating on the internet, and fans wonder when Arrowhead Game Studios released such a version of the game. However, it turns out that the video was an imaginative idea of an animator fan who modeled it after Genndy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars. The video had fans almost convinced for a second that the new video game got itself an animated remake.

In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars," there is a scene wherein a cadre of Nazi-like bad guys, in the employ of the evil Empire, gather around a boardroom table and mention that the mysterious off-screen Emperor has dissolved the senate and taken absolute control. The military generals are outraged, wondering how the Empire might survive without a bureaucracy in place. In Irvin Kirshner's 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it's established that Darth Vader (David Prowse), a mysterious masked warlock, was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, indicating that the Emperor retains control of the Empire through the sheer force of his villainy.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," the Emperor appeared in holographic form to have a powwow with Darth Vader and plan his next move. In the original cut of the movie, the Emperor was played on screen by actress Marjorie Eaton, outfitted with eerie, alien eyeballs. Eaton was a long-working character performer in Hollywood,...

In case you didn’t know, animation directors are also auteurs. According to Yahoo Finance, the global animation market reached more than $400 billion at the end of 2023. That was up from $391 billion one year before. And yet, animated projects are not automatically covered by the WGA, are separate from the DGA, and are consistently overlooked for their filmmaking achievements.

The 2008 cartoon series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" is now a heralded piece of the "Star Wars" legacy, filling in plenty of gaps in the "Star Wars" prequel film trilogy. It also finally told the story of the eponymous conflict — which was first namedropped all the way back in the original 1977 "Star Wars." "The Clone Wars" was a story that had been speculated on for more than 40 years. What if I told you, though, that the story had already been recounted by 2008?

Genndy Tartakovsky makes everything he works on better, but even he wasn't able to fix the hot mess that was "Iron Man 2." In Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards' book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios," the acclaimed filmmaker behind beloved titles like "Samurai Jack," "Dexter's Laboratory," and "Star Wars: Clone Wars" reveals that he was tapped by director Jon Favreau to help streamline the Marvel sequel's climax.

The "Star Wars" galaxy is vast, to put it lightly. The franchise has been one of the biggest staples of pop culture for nearly 50 years now, dating back to George Lucas' original sci-fi classic in 1977. These days, it's a sprawling, multimedia empire that is an entire universe unto itself. That universe contains its own technology, species, planets, vehicles, and so much more. All of that comes with very specific language that has a fair amount of nuance worth understanding.
Is Endor a planet or a moon? Should you capitalize stormtrooper? What exactly is the Expanded Universe? We're going to go over all of that and so much in more in this handy dandy "Star Wars" style guide. From the proper spellings of common aliens to understanding the entire timeline, we're going to break it all down so you can better navigate a galaxy far, far away.

The world of "Star Wars" animation has always been kind of separate from the live-action one; from Genndy Tartakovsky's "Star Wars: Clone Wars" offering a more mythology-focused take on the Jedi, making them demi-gods of Ancient Greek myth rather than monk warriors, to Dave Filoni's work on "The Clone Wars" convincing George Lucas to be hands-on with "Star Wars" animation and (along with "Star Wars Rebels") introducing a lot of lore in the form of fantastical concepts like the Ghosts of Mortis and the mystical World Between Worlds.
But that has changed in recent years, with filmmakers such as Rian Johnson and Jon Favreau referencing or outright bringing animated characters and elements over into their live-action "Star Wars" projects. Indeed, the most important "Star Wars" titles to be at least aware of right now are all animated, in no small part due to the importance of the character...

The latest trailer for Disney+’s Star Wars series Ahsoka ups the action.
The two-minute clip released Tuesday showcases Rosario Dawson as the titular Jedi while also expanding the focus from an earlier teaser to include both more battle scenes and a longer look at Dawson’s co-stars, who include Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, the late Ray Stevenson as Jedi-turned-mercenary Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn and Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger.
Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano, who made her debut in season two of The Mandalorian, states early in the trailer that she’s looking to stop Thrawn from becoming “heir to the Empire.” Winstead’s character convinces Ahsoka to find Sabine and enlist her in the coming fight.

With each passing year, the performance of “The Simpsons” in the best animated program category grows more amazing. It’s contending again with a “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween episode this year, one of 33 shows on the ballot hoping for nomination. And given its past track record, you have to think its chances are pretty good.
The numbers, after all, don’t lie and tell a remarkable story.

Genndy Tartakovsky, the man behind Hotel Transylvania, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Dexter’s Laboratory, Primal, and Samurai Jack, is in the midst of production on Fixed, an R-rated animated comedy that has landed a great voice cast. Variety reports that Adam Devine, Idris Elba, and Kathryn Hahn will be leading the project for New Line Cinema and Sony Pictures Animation.

“Unicorn: Warriors Eternal,” airing now as part of the Adult Swim programming block on Cartoon Network (and streaming on Max), is centered around four indestructible spirits who travel through time, inhabiting the bodies of whoever is around, as they battle the forces of evil. After a brief prologue, we’re introduced to our characters, who all live in a cartoonishly steampunk-y Victorian London – one warrior inhabits the spirit of a young newlywed woman (complicating matters for her betrothed), another a young street urchin. There’s also a robot named Copernicus who guides the spirits through time.
It is both outlandish and singularly visionary; the kind of thing that could only be dreamed up by Genndy Tartakovsky, the fabled creator of “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Samurai Jack” and, most recently, the Emmy-winning “Primal.” “Unicorn: Warriors Eternal” feels like both a culmination and extension of Tartakovsky’s previous work, mixing the spiritualism of “Samurai Jack...

Former Lucasfilm exec Catherine Winder, whose animation credits include Star Wars: Clone Wars, Angry Birds, Ice Age and Invincible, is teaming with veteran kids producer Annabel Slaight to launch a new digital content platform as kids anxiously confront climate change.
Potatoverse will includes short-form animation, Roblox games, podcasts and other output aimed at children and their families to generate positive climate change for a better environment. Winder and Slaight say the initiative aims to build on the imagination and enthusiasm of young audiences.
“By empowering kids to explore their own ideas while fostering a deep connection with nature, Potatoverse will be a forum for kids to contribute meaningfully as catalysts for positive change. We are filling the hope gap for children when it comes to the future. But as it should be for kids, play and fun is at the heart of everything we are doing,” Winder and Slaight said in a joint statement.

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.
Check out the “White House Plumbers” trailer:
The platform will head to the pitch on May 16 with a three-part soccer docuseries “Angel City.” The series goes behind the scenes with the groundbreaking Los Angeles-based professional women’s soccer team, Angel City Football Club. It reveals the origin story through the 2022 inaugural season of the female-founded and led team — including owners and investors Uzo Aduba,...

Genndy Tartakovsky has proudly become the auteur of adult 2D animation. His new “Unicorn Warriors: Eternal” steampunk series premieres May 4 on Adult Swim; he’s completing his R-rated dog comedy “Fixed” for release next year at Sony Pictures Animation; and he’s prepping for Season 3 of his Emmy-winning “Primal” series at Adult Swim, but departing from the prehistoric world.
With “Unicorn Warriors,” though, Tartakovsky combines his personal steampunk aesthetic with action and humor, going back to his old Cartoon Network days, but without the gore of “Primal” or “Samurai Jack.” It’s about three heroes — powerful sorceress Melinda (Hazel Doupe), cosmic monk Seng (Demari Hunte), and warrior elf Edred (Tom Milligan) — reawakened through eternity as teenagers to fight a mysterious supernatural force threatening humanity. In the first season, the three find themselves in industrial London, joined by a steam-powered robot, Copernicus.

“I get to make a movie!” Dave Filoni exclaimed in front of 4,500 screaming fans at Star Wars Celebration last Friday after it was announced he was one of three directors working on new live-action “Star Wars” films.
Technically, Filoni — who writes, directs and executive produces the currently streaming “Mandalorian” and upcoming “Ahsoka” series — has already directed a “Star Wars” film: 2008’s animated “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” But taking on a big budget, big-screen live-action project is new territory for the franchise veteran.
Filoni is relatively new to the live-action directing game. The first time he shot live-action was on “The Mandalorian.” But Filoni’s mentor and co-executive producer Jon Favreau says Filoni’s experience in animation and ability to plan and visualize everything before it goes on screen will serve him well.

"Star Wars" was in a strange place in 2007. Two years out from the release of "Revenge of the Sith," George Lucas' mega-lucrative prequel trilogy had yet to undergo the critical re-evaluation it would receive over the decades that followed its conclusion. At the time, people were (not unfairly) still a little too hung up on their clumsier and weirdly affectless narrative elements to fully appreciate just how shockingly insightful the films are when it comes to their commentary on U.S. politics and the ways history keeps repeating itself. It would also be another five years before Disney acquired Lucasfilm, at which point the "Star Wars" franchise would see a dramatic re-tooling in terms of its over-arching storytelling and thematic design.
Why, then, is 2007 a significant year for a galaxy far, far away? You see, dear reader, this was when Lucas began pitching "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" to TV networks,...

The "Star Wars" villain General Grievous was introduced in the 2003 "Star Wars: Clone Wars" animated series. The Separatist General is an organic being whose parts have been replaced with cybernetics. He became a lightsaber expert despite having no Force sensitivity after studying with Count Dooku. His rival is Obi-Wan Kenobi, who ultimately kills him in "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith." According to George Lucas, the idea was to have him be "an alien in a droid shell, which is sort of an echo of what Anakin is going to become."
General Grievous could have had a very different backstory and one that sounds intriguing, if not particularly feasible. The information comes to us from an interview between /Film's Rafael Motamayor and Henry Gilroy, writer of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels," for which he also served as a co-executive producer. Genndy Tartakovsky is one of the most important figures currently working in animation. He's had his hands on beloved shows like "Cow and Chicken," "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," and "The Powerpuff Girls," as well as creating "Dexter's Laboratory," "Samurai Jack," "Star Wars: Clone Wars," "Hotel Transylvania," and the Emmy Award-winning epic, "Primal." Tartakovsky's work covers a wide scope of tone, thematic material, and animation styles, but always centers around a wholly unique story with striking visuals.
While a show like "Dexter's Laboratory" or a film like "Hotel Transylvania" makes it sound like Tartakovsky is exclusive to animated children's fare, both "Samurai Jack" and "Primal" are proof-positive that animation is not just kids' stuff. For many years, Tartakovsky has been trying to get a project called "Fixed" off the ground, an R-rated 2D animated feature about a dog's last 24 hours before getting neutered. "Star Wars" is seldom as good and innovative as it is in animation. Sure, "Andor" is absolutely fantastic, but the animated projects in the franchise have time and time again challenged not only what a "Star Wars" story could be, but how it can look.
There was Genndy Tartakovsky's 2D-animated "Star Wars: Clone Wars," which gave us the best action scenes in the entire franchise, and the final season of the 3D "The Clone Wars," which was not only visually stunning, but improved the prequels in virtually every way. Even "Star Wars: Visions" gave us gorgeous visuals and a collection of original and inventive stories set in the galaxy far, far away.
The "Star Wars" animated projects usually push the boundaries of George Lucas' original vision by taking advantage of the malleability of the animation medium, and "The Bad Batch" is no exception. The sequel to "The Clone Wars...

Genndy Tartakovsky has been a champion of animation for nearly 30 years, pushing conventional storytelling's boundaries. Not only has Tartakovsky helped establish animation as a medium for telling compelling stories, but he's also helped to move it forward in style, production value, and overall class. From his early work in "Dexter's Laboratory" to his visceral and kinetic work on "Star Wars: Clone Wars," Tartakovsky has always had a knack for visual storytelling. After serving as a director and creator on "Powerpuff Girls," Tartakovsky moved on to his next project in his still-growing career.

One of the most respected and admired figures within the animation world for the last 30 years has been Genndy Tartakovsky. Throughout the years, he created "Dexter's Laboratory," "Samurai Jack," and most recently "Primal," as well as being a key creative force behind "The Powerpuff Girls" and "Star Wars: Clone Wars." On television screens, he has dominated the cartoon landscape and amassed a legion of super fans awaiting whatever he does next. On the big screen, however, he has not been given nearly as much room to shine.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal has no words but deep meaning. The Adult Swim series about a caveman and his dinosaur struggling to survive made it to a second season, a lost love, and a new world. It also picked up some Emmys, like his series Star Wars: Clone Wars. The Russian-born artist reinvigorated Cartoon Network by creating shows like Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack, with Unicorn: Warriors Eternal upcoming. He made his film debut directing Hotel Transylvania and is currently at work on the animated feature, Fixed. But for now, evolution itself hangs on the hope that Spear and Fang can rescue a mysterious woman in a faraway land.

So many stories set in the galaxy far, far away burn so brightly that it's difficult to pick out the most luminous of them all. When George Lucas' Star Wars franchise first landed on television, the possibilities seemed as endless as the cosmos. The 1978 "Star Wars Holiday Special" kicked things off, while the 1985 "Droids" and "Ewoks" cartoons marked Lucasfilm's first foray into episodic animated television. The hand-drawn 2003 "Star Wars: Clone Wars" micro-series formed the blueprints for the eventual 2008 CGI series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," and paved the way for Disney-era cartoons like "Star Wars Rebels" and "The Bad Batch," as well...

I hear Bordizzo will be taking on the character of Sabine Wren from the Star Wars Rebels animated series. Reps from Lucasfilm and Bordizzo did not return emails seeking comment.
Dawson stars as Ahsoka Tano in the limited series after making the Star Wars: Clone Wars and Rebels character’s live-action debut in The Mandalorian. The offshoot, written by Dave Filoni and executive produced by Filoni and Jon Favreau, will continue Ahsoka’s story.
No additional information about the new series has been released by Lucasfilm, but there has been a lot of online speculation that key characters from Rebels such as Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger would join Ahsoka in the new show.

Genndy Tartakovsky's hand-drawn "Star Wars: Clone Wars" series, which aired from 2003 to 2005, did not mark Star Wars' first foray into animation. Such can be traced back to 1985, shortly after "Return of the Jedi." But the micro-series heralded the arrival of a new era for animated storytelling that seriously expanded the canon of the galaxy far, far away. While Tartakovsky's contributions are archived as proto-canon, slotted in the same "Star Wars Vintage" section of Disney+ as 1985's "Ewoks" and "Droids" animated series, his shorts provided the blueprints that the rest of the franchise built off of for both animated and live-action projects alike.

“Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” won the 2021 Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Series during Sunday afternoon’s Creative Arts Emmy ceremony. This is the Adult Swim program’s first nomination for Best Animated Series and its first win.
Tartakovsky, an animation veteran, last won the Best Animated Series Emmy in 2005 for “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” which also won in 2004 alongside another of the creator’s beloved programs, “Samurai Jack.” Previously, Tartakovsky earned four nominations in the category for “Dexter’s Laboratory” and three nods for “The Powerpuff Girls.” Overall, Tartakovsky has 14 nominations along with five wins.
Heading into the Creative Arts Awards, “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” had won an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, which was bestowed by a jury in late August. The Adult Swim animated series also won three trophies in the same category last year, when the full season wasn’t yet eligible for Best Animated Series.

After steadily building up momentum since the show premiered on Netflix in 2017, “Big Mouth” looks like it might finally be poised to take home its first win for Best Animated Program during part one of Sunday night’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremony.
