Back in 2000, young filmmaker Patrick Hughes had completed the ambitious self-funded short film, The Director, which he was hoping to adapt into a feature film. After numerous stops and starts, including Gabriel Byrne agreeing to star in the film, the project fell over. Hughes went on to direct the Tropfest winning The Lighter, and signed on with commercials production company Radical Media as one of their select team of directors. More recently, in 2008 Hughes directed the Schweppes promo masquerading as a 12 minute short film Signs, which not only won an award at Cannes, but has become a YouTube sensation.
