A rare chance to see a sad act from the bygone era.

Moran and Mack were a comedy team who enjoyed radio success as well as making a string of seven shorts for Educational Pictures in the early 1930s. They were essentially like the original pre-television act, Amos 'n Andy....white guys painted up in black face an talking VERY stereotypically for laughs. Today, such comedy would be seen as appalling and gross...which it really was. Although the films of Moran and Mack make us feel uncomfortable today, it is a part of our history.

Like a typical Moran and Mack short, most everyone in the film looks kinda black but are really white folks in dark makeup. The only exception I noticed was the cute little kid who really was black an a few folks at the boxing match who were white and were actually white.

I'm no expert on the team, so I really am not sure which one was Moran and which was Mack in this one...though I really didn't care. One is a cook and braggart who regales a cute little kid about his boxing prowess. In reality, he's NOT an accomplished boxer. But when a jerk insults him, the kid insists that he challenge the guy to a boxing match. Unfortunately, his opponent knows a lot about boxing....and he's bound to kill him in the ring. What to do? Well, a bit of cheating wouldn't hurt!

The boxing match is dumb...and the pair are dressed very oddly (one in suit and tie). And, the whole notion of whites in black-face is pretty dumb. But it could have possibly been worse....though I am not sure how.
