Almost true, but not totally true.
zzmale7 April 2004
The literal translation of the title of this movie is: Blood for Bloody.

This movie is based on the true story that really happened in real life, but there is something the Chinese government would rather not talk about: the dross in the traditional Chinese Culture, namely, the rigid traditional Confucian teaching which resulted in the hatred among families caused by disputes that were actually caused generations ago. This feudal practice resulted in tragedies among people who really had nothing against each other because the rift between the families were among those who lived decades, or even centuries ago.

The family murdered in the real life was the victims of this dross in the traditional culture, and their opposing family used foreigners to settle the score, and therefore were equally responsible. This is what this movie had missed.
