Hellbenders is the latest film from writer/director J.T. Petty, who also directed The Burrowers and Mimic 3: Sentinel. It revolves around The Augustine Interfaith Order of Hellbound Saints, a congregation of ministers from different faiths who live in a constant state of debauchery and sin. Why you ask? Well, there are some demons so terrible that no mortal man of God can successfully them drive back to hell, and that’s where these Hellbound Saints (or Hellbenders) come in. They are a group of highly trained exorcists whose constant state of debauchery has them more than ready to go to Hell at a moment’s notice, allowing them to take the terrible demons along with them so that they can face the damnation they deserve.

J.T. Petty's latest film, Hellbenders has been picked up by Lionsgate for release, says Variety. Petty previously helmed Mimic: Sentinel, S&Man and The Burrowers.
Clancy Brown toplines the cast which also includes Dan Fogler, Andrew Royo and Clifton Collins Jr. Four new pics from the flick floated our way and you'll find them after the jump.
The horror-comedy follows the Order of Hellbound Saints (Brooklyn Parish), a highly secretive and profoundly blasphemous men of God, as they battle demonic forces too terrible to be cast out by traditional Vatican-approved methods.
The film was shot in 3D; stay tuned for a release date. In the meantime, head inside for a larger look at the poster we spotted at the American Film Market.

Keeping company with such 90s creature features as Species and The Relic, Guillermo del Toro’s Mimic seems like a creepy thriller masterpiece by comparison, even if it has just as many plotholes and lop-sided characterizations as its contemporaries. What sets Mimic apart from similar flicks is the monster effects work del Toro that has since made him a revered creator of fantastical horror, and that’s enough to make the first film of this sci-fi horror trilogy worth at least a single view. With Mimic 2 and Mimic: Sentinel (aka Mimic 3)—crammed onto the same Blu-ray disc—there’s no such allure; you don’t have a visual effects auteur at the helm of either, and both the writing and acting are painfully corny. The Mimic franchise was better left as a standalone film.

'Haywire', 'Joyful Noise', 'W.E.' and 'New Year's Eve' Lead This Week's New DVD and Blu-ray Releases
Haywire From an entertainment perspective this is the week's best new release, but for action junkies this might not be the film you are necessarily expecting. Haywire certainly has its moments, but it's not the Bourne-style film the trailers were selling. It doesn't present it's action set pieces with quick editing and "thwacks' and "pows". It's more awkward and realistic than that with heavy thuds and what almost looks like wrestling. I enjoyed it when I saw it, but I don't want people to purchase it with the wrong expectations.
George Harrison: Living In The Material World I still haven't seen Martin Scorsese's George Harrison doc, but it was much loved by those that did. It's a long one at 208 minutes and from that perspective I'm going to be sure and watch the three hour Woody Allen doc first, but one of these days I'll get around to this.

We've gone from too few films to discuss to too many. My list of movies worth recommending added since last week is enormous and is going to take some time to get through (expect to see some pop up next week). Now that the 4th of July is over, though, and you only need to go see Horrible Bosses this weekend (please avoid Zookeper and any of your friends that choose to go see it) it's totally cool to stay inside with your favorite Netflix-enabled device and watch some movies you've never seen before or rekindle the romance with some old favorites.

Genre fav J.T. Petty - director of Soft for Digging, Mimic: Sentinel, The Burrowers, S&Man and the forthcoming HellBenders - is getting behind the camera for Haunted Temple. Temple is heading for production this fall in Japan, one of the first Hollywood-based features to shoot there after the March earthquake and tsunami. Haunted Temple is a Japanese-style horror feature reminiscent of The Ring and The Grudge. Producers are keeping details about the script under wraps. Industrial recently released Werner Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done and Repo Chick. Macari/Edelstein produced the U.S. remake of the The Ring, The Ring 2 and Shelter.

If you haven't heard of J.T. Petty, you haven't been paying attention. The NY native became a genre force after Lionsgate released The Burrowers, but his infamy comes behind the incredible S&Man, which finally got a release last year thanks to Magnet. Also known for directing the Rear Window-inspired Mimic: Sentinel, Petty is gearing up for his fourth genre effort that'll put your faith to the test. Clifton Collins is set to star in Petty's supernatural pic Hellbenders, which is about a secret group of elite demonologists in a Brooklyn diocese who battle a terrifying supernatural force that threatens their lives and faith. The 3D film also stars Clancy Brown and Dan Fogler and goes into production next week. The pic is based on a graphic novel written by Petty, who recently sold his spec, "Zombies vs. Robots" to Sony.

(Caution! Potential Spoiler in this review for those who don’t know the film’s “gimmick”)
In S&Man (now on DVD and Blu-ray under Magnolia Home Entertainment’s Magnet banner), J.T. Petty—the writer/director of Soft For Digging, Mimic: Sentinel and The Burrowers—examines underground horror, voyeurism and the connections between sex and violence in the genre. This interesting, albeit uneven, mix of fact and fiction is presented as a documentary, but combines actual interviews with real people and professionals with a fabricated storyline involving a made-up director whose snuff films may be the real deal.

Around Dread Central we love us some Jt Petty. The indie filmmaker has turned out some really quality flicks over the past few years including Soft For Digging, The Burrowers, S&Man, and the better than it had any right to be Mimic 3. Word just broke about his latest foray into terror. Ready to find out what's on tap?
According to Bloody Disgusting Petty (pictured right) is getting back behind the camera with Hellbenders, a new horror comedy said to be in the vein of classics such as The Exorcist and Ghostbusters. Taking place in modern-day New York, a team of holy men (consisting of ministers and priests) battle the forces of evil. Awesome. Shooting is scheduled to begin this November in New York City.
Pretty damned nifty! Look for more on this one soon!

"The Burrowers", will be released on DVD July 13th, from Lionsgate. "The Burrowers" is a completely original creature feature and splendid blend of raw western grit and unnerving horror from the director of Mimic: Sentinel. The Dakota Territories. 1879. A handful of brave pioneers maintain isolated settlements in the badlands beyond civilization. Irish Immigrant Fergus Coffey is near to winning the hand of his beloved Maryanne when she is suddenly taken from him, her family brutally abducted in a night-time attack on their homestead. Suspicion falls immediately on hostile Indians. Experienced Indian fighters Will Parcher and John Clay form a posse and set out to rescue the kidnapped settlers, taking along a naïve teenager hoping to prove himself a man, an ex-slave...

It’s early August in the mountains above Santa Fe, New Mexico, and writer/director J.T. Petty is giving instructions for a crane-mounted shot he wants on his horror/Western The Burrowers, which is being released this Tuesday, April 21 on DVD by Lionsgate. Petty, casually dressed in a T-shirt and jacket, looks on his monitor at a green meadow between tall white aspen trees.
Actor William Mapother is loosely tied down to a fallen tree trunk, his face heavy with makeup of bruises, cuts and a pustulent growth. A tall Ute Indian, played by Tatanka Means with war paint on his face and a brown leather outfit, looks on. But he’s not the main threat faced by Mapother’s character, former soldier William Parcher; that would be the film’s title creatures—mysterious, vaguely humanoid beings that live underground and feast upon captured prey.

Scary creatures can invade any time or place, such as outer space, a cave or your innocent daughter’s upstairs bedroom. And horror can come from anywhere—even underground. Such is the case when strange flesheating monsters invade the Old West in writer/director J.T. Petty’s The Burrowers, coming on Lionsgate DVD April 21, and Fango visited the set to dig up the details.
John Ford’s Western films, especially 1956’s The Searchers, served as a template for this creature feature, set in the Dakota Territories in 1879. Petty and his team are putting an emphasis on open spaces, dark moodiness and the broody nature of a Western-era posse. Add in subterranean lifeforms, alien-like but born of the Earth, that hunt and prey on humans, and you have a film (see our reviews here and here) that initially sounds a bit like Tremors in the cowboy era. "The Burrowers" DVD Reviewby Peter Dimako, Editor Admittedly, I love a good western and a decent enough horror; they’re both hard to come by for the most part, quality-wise that is. I had tried watching the absolutely appalling “The Man Who Came Back” western sent to us and just couldn’t chew more than the first twenty minutes before shelving it. This time around I was intrigued and thankfully enough made it through the full, entertaining offering. “The Burrowers” is written and helmed by J.T. Petty, director of the straight-to-video release “Mimic 3.” The story is set in the Dakota Territories in 1879, a place where only a few make their homes far from civilization. Film sets off with a family being attacked and abducted at their home and we meet Irish immigrant Fergus Coffey Karl Geary), a man who dreams of marrying his beloved Maryanne, one of those who have been taken.

Not to be confused with the 1997 family romp The Borrowers, The Burrowers is a horror film by video game writer and Mimic 3 director J.T. Petty. Imagine if Ravenous and Tremors came together and lost most of their satirical wit and you should begin to get an idea of what you can expected from The Burrowers. The international trailer for the film has just dropped over at Bd and though it doesn't give much away in terms of monster mayhem, it definitely left me wanting more. If its a hit, I think there's every possibility that we could have another underground alien franchise on our hands people. Full synopsis and trailer after the break.

During the recent Weekend of Horrors in Secaucus, Nj (read the full report here), I finally got the chance to meet Soft for Digging and Mimic: Sentinel director Jt Petty, whose work I’ve been a huge fan of for years. He was there to promote his next film, The Burrowers, a monster movie we’ve been keeping tabs on since its initial announcement.
”What’s fun about a creature movie is you can get to some really deep material without actually going at it directly,” Petty said when asked about the social commentary in The Burrowers. ”Goijira, the original Godzilla, is a great example of that; four years after Hiroshima gets bombed they make a movie about a giant monster that does exactly what the bomb did. Cloverfield is a good example as well as a reaction to 9/11. And Burrowers does get to the level as well, but it...
