Prior to the debut of "The Powerpuff Girls" in 1998, show creator Craig McCracken had directed a series of tasteless cartoon shorts starring a character named No-Neck Joe. No-Neck Joe appeared regularly at the celebrated annual Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, cementing McCracken's underground credentials. The Powerpuff Girls first came into McCracken's repertoire as early as 1992, back when they were called the Whoopass Girls. The juxtaposition between the characters' creepy, ultra-cute, Margaret Keane-like faces and their ultra-violent behavior was the stuff of comedy legend, and McCracken kept the Girls in his back pocket for years.
Throughout the 1990s, McCracken rose in the ranks of the animation world, landing gigs on shows like "2 Stupid Dogs," "Dumb and Dumber," and, most notably, Genndy Tartakovsky's seminal series 1996 "Dexter's Laboratory." McCracken directed many episodes of the show. "Dexter's Laboratory" was one of four new series launched by the Cartoon Network...

If making a TV show is a constant juggling act, then the process of making “Birdgirl” is like adding on a poetry recitation and a graduate-level thesis on fluid mechanics.
The show, which just aired its season finale on Adult Swim, is a madcap animated exploration of a giant conglomerate’s CEO — who just also happens to be a thinly disguised superhero. It’s also following in the canonical footsteps of a beloved classic. Judy Ken Sebben (Paget Brewster), the corporate executive who moonlights as the costumed crimefighter who gives the show its name, first appeared on “Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law.”
Balancing a pre-existing character with a series of expansive adventures that cross dimensions and the boundaries of characters’ minds at breakneck speed placed the bar for “Birdgirl” extremely high.
“It’s a super simple moment and a bookend to the story, but [with] Judy looks at the cowl and saying,...

This article contains no spoilers and is based on the first two episodes of Birdgirl.
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law was one of the five original series to debut back on Adult Swim when the programming block was first created. The network has evolved in considerable ways since its inception, but even back then Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law was an important series that helped establish the acerbic and dadaist style of humor that continues to define Adult Swim to this day.
Now, 20 years after the premiere of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law and Adult Swim as a whole, Birdgirl returns to this beloved universe, appropriately enough as Adult Swim heads into a new phase. Birdgirl is a delight that’s a worthy successor to one of Adult Swim’s flagship programs, but it’s also its own entity that has something very different to say about bureaucratic superheroes in bird costumes.

Cartoon Network veteran Michael Ouweleen has been promoted to president of Adult Swim.
Ouweleen has been with Cartoon Network and Adult Swim for more than 20 years, most recently in the role of chief marketing officer for Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang.
Cartoon Network and Adult Swim operations were moved out of Turner and under the Warner Bros. umbrella following AT&T’s acquisition of parent company Time Warner in 2018. In November, Ouweleen was tapped as interim head of Warner Bros. Kids, Young Adults and Classics unit. Earlier this month, former Freeform president Tom Ascheim was named president of that division.

Adult Swim is returning to the world of Harvey Birdman.
The Viacom network has ordered a spinoff following Paget Brewster’s Birdgirl, who becomes CEO of the fictional Sebben & Sebben law firm that Harvey Birdman works at.
Here is the official description of the show, per Adult Swim: After being named CEO of the world’s largest and most non-sensical corporation, Sebben & Sebben, Judy Ken Sebben (aka Birdgirl) has to find a way to maintain her work/superhero life balance. Through the halls of the company headquarters she assembles her Birdteam! By day, they try to drag the company into this century. By…mid-afternoon, they usually end up having to break a lot of things to stop something bad that one of them may have helped cause. It’s the sort of superhero team we get at this moment.

There are few communities as obsessive as Adult Swim fans. The Cartoon Network nighttime programming block debuted in 2001 as a subversive spin on the animated channel’s daytime fare, and soon grew into a catch-all for bold creators. It eventually shook off its animated-only ethos to allow for surreal visions and adventurous filmmaking that fostered some of Hollywood’s most off-the-wall thinkers, and even brought in game celebrities to join in the insanity. Nearly every As title has disparate cults to fight for the programs that speak to them, whether it’s the rockers who ride for “Metalocalypse,” the Tim & Eric faithful who crowd the duo’s live shows, or the chemically enhanced who get their kicks on “Off the Air.”

Adult Swim animator and voice actor Clay Martin Croker died yesterday at the age of 54, as reported by Adult Swim creative director Jason DeMarco and contributor/rapper Mc Chris. Croker is best known for voicing both Zorak and Moltar on the long-running Cartoon Network talk show parody “Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” a series credited for establishing Adult Swim, spawning four separate spin-off shows — “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” “Sealab 2021,” “The Brak Show,” and “Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law” — and produced the majority of the writers and staff who still currently work for the alternative programming block.

True Detective lifted the lid on the mystery of Ray’s maybe death after an entire week of ferocious speculation to reveal Colin Farrell’s suicidally droopy mustache, a sight which avoids occasioning disappointment only in the respect that at least you’re not seeing it in the mirror. It’s not a worse show for having chickened out on pursuing the exciting byroad it might have gone down by killing its top-billed actor two hours into its run, but it is exactly as bad as it’s always been. Even the opening sequence, what amounts to an extended Twin Peaks reference, can’t hide the fact that there’s precious little going on in season 2.

Gary Cole, who currently stars on "Veep" as Selina Meyer's senior strategist Kent Davidson, is -- for those who've been keeping track -- one of the most eclectic and slyly kooky performers alive. The 58-year-old actor netted his first major nomination last year (an Emmy nod for guest-acting on "Veep"), but his career has been a long, ascending spiral of dead-eyed caricatures and commanding dramatic roles. His august screen presence suggests a comfort playing white-collar blowhards, but that's the magic of Gary Cole: He's absolutely comfortable playing anything. That's pretty astounding when you realize he's played everything. Interviews with Cole, including ours from 2014's PaleyFest below, reveal that he's not a Crispin Glover type who's as unnerving (and nervous-making) as many of his signature roles. In fact, he kind of seems like a milder version of Kent. Perhaps it's his education at Illinois State University alongside fellow thespian veterans...

Bill Farmer, possibly best known to most of us as the voice of Disney’s Goofy for the past twenty-seven years, is an amazing talent, a hilarious person and an all-around nice guy. Bill, who was named a Disney Legend in 2009, and in 2011 was the first voice actor to receive the prestigious Friz Freleng Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Animation, began his career as a radio DJ and stand-up comedian before landing the role of Goofy in 1987. He has gone on to voice a myriad of other well-known characters as well, including Disney characters such as Pluto, Horace Horsecollar, and Doc.
Bill’s also voiced Looney Tunes characters such as Yosemite Sam, Sylvester, and Foghorn Leghorn, and other fun and memorable roles such as Secret Squirrel in Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Stinkie in Casper: A Spirited Beginning and Casper Meets Wendy, Willie Bear in Horton Hears a Who!

There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. These days, cartoons for grown-ups are not only ubiquitous, but hilariously twisted and high-quality to boot — and that's due in large part to a phenomenon called Adult Swim. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's...

Exclusive: Adult Swim has picked up a second season of its live-action series Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell. Matt Servitto (Banshee, The Sopranos), Henry Zebrowski (The Wolf Of Wall Street) and Craig Rowin (Night Of Too Many Stars, @Midnight) star in the workplace comedy that follows Gary (Zebrowski), an associate demon, as he attempts to capture souls on Earth in order to climb the corporate ladder of the underworld. Gary is too stupid, lazy, and kind-hearted to do his job well and is frequently stabbed in the back by his devious co-worker, Claude (Rowin). Plus, his boss Satan (Servitto) is immortal, which means that management positions are unlikely to become available soon. In Season 2, Gary learns how to appear on people’s shoulders to tempt them, we meet our first angel, and we find the answer to the question if there are women in hell. (Answer: yes.) There’s a lot on the plate of today’s cartoon junkie; the modern range of offerings means that, really, one is spoiled for choice a lot of the time. However, does this jostling for our precious viewing time take in to consideration the quality of what is being served? Does the presentation step beyond a desire to sell an audience toys? Is there a certain something that will stick in the mind, genuinely reflecting and yet effectively parodying? Is there meaning or worth beyond the prima facie presentation?
These are questions that bear analysis, should an individual desire to derive a multilayered satisfaction from their enjoyment. It’s great to sit and watch animation, but it’s even better to share it with others, on an understanding that there are strong reasons why the thing you’re watching is a perennial favourite that weathers repeat viewings.

Stephen Colbert doesn.t do a lot of live-action acting . if you don.t count his overbearing right-wing persona that he has during The Colbert Report - but he has been known to lend his interesting voice to movies and television shows of the animated variety. Most recently he played President Hathaway in the 2009 DreamWorks Animation film Monsters vs. Aliens, but has also voiced characters on programs like The Venture Bros., The Simpsons, Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law and American Dad. Now he.s once again ready to add to his resume as he has signed on to the cast of Mr. Peabody and Sherman. But he.s not the only one. According to THR, Allison Janney, Ellie Kemper, Ariel Winter and Stephen Tobolowsky are also on board. The actors join the already-cast Ty Burrell, who will be voicing the hyper-intelligent dog, and Max Charles, who plays his young friend.

Jonathan Levine’s 50/50 is finally on the cusp of hitting the big screen in the UK. America has had it for some time now, and I was lucky enough to catch it last month at the London Film Festival (and thought it deserved every one of the 5 stars I gave it in my review), and now its release is literally just a day away, coming out on Friday, tomorrow.
The film has an absolutely terrific cast, led by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen, with brilliant support coming from Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anjelica Huston, and Philip Baker Hall.
If you’ve missed our coverage of the film so far, you can catch up on it all here, and get immensely excited about its release tomorrow.

The patron comic book of Monday Mix-Up has always been The Brave And The Bold, a comic book that delighted in mashing up weird combinations of characters, usually Batman with characters that made almost no sense to combine with, like Deadman, Kamandi, Jonah Hex, Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Lois Lane, Scalphunter, the Legion of Super-Heroes, the Unknown Soldier, the Guardians of the Universe, the Joker, R’as al Ghul, and the House of Mystery. This tradition has been carried on in the TV series Batman: The Brave And The Bold, which has included many of those combinations and added Space Ghost to boot.
But for some, those combinations just aren’t going far enough. For those, we present The Brave And The Bold: The Lost Issues. Now you can find the missing team-ups with Batman and Jack Bauer, Iron Man 2020, Spider-Man 2099, Harvey Birdman, Groo, Galactus, Dirty Harry, Darth Vader, and Adam West.

Back in 2003, as a result of a series of unfortunate events - as Lemony Snicket would say - I found myself with a week off school and very little to do. However, thanks to a little known American animated sitcom - aka Family Guy - I soon found an outlet for my time and my love of animated comedies was born. As the years progressed, so did my collection - Futurama, American Dad, South Park; all soon had consumed a large portion of both my time and my life.
However, as the years went by, the standards began to fall. The first victim was Futurama, stumbling through its third season before finally coming to rest after its fourth (or so it seemed). Soon after was South Park, a series that, as much as it tried to distance itself, caught "Simpson's syndrome" - a crippling disease that results in one funny...

Welcome to No Fact Zone’s weekly roundup of cultural references on The Colbert Report. From Darcy to Danger Mouse, String Theory to Shakespeare, we’ve got the keys to this week’s obscure, oddball, and occasionally obscene cultural shout-outs (hey!)
Sveiki Zoners! Wow, what a somber and precarious situation to follow up. I was pleased with how Stephen and the writers handled it. The rest of the week was great, and stayed on point with the events that continued to unfold. Also, as someone married to a man with Lithuanian heritage (not recent, though), the bit on the Lithuanian national perfume was, by far, my favorite clip of the entire week. I never thought Stephen would give me such fodder for family gatherings. What were your favorites this week?
