Dramatic Conclusion to Season Four
Hitchcoc10 February 2020
Wycliffe can't divorce himself from his job. Deep down he feels no one else can do as well as he does. So Doug and Lucy follow orders. This involves the shotgun murder of an older couple under suspicious circumstances. Wycliffe crosses swords with some really bad people who are into some ugly things. Unfortunately, his actions exacerbate the situation and cost greatly. A much more intense episode than usual.

Season 5 warning
lotekguy-127 July 2022
Compared to the first four seasons, this one contains an excess of frustrating angst imposed upon more than one of the main characters. It's not as much about the cases as before, making a tone shift that ranges between annoying and almost unacceptable.

Fortunately, this swan song trudge is only six episodes. Stubbornness and curiosity kept me going to the end, but the journey was less satisfying than it had been. Adjust expectations accordingly as you proceed to the finish line.

Warning: Spoilers
A feature length episode where Dirty Den is a bit dodgy.

It starts off with a gruesome death of a building society manager and his wife. Wycliffe postpones a holiday to Paris with his wife. She stomps off to Paris on her own.

The police investigation brings him into contact with a wealthy but smarmy gun dealer from London called Patrick Durno (Leslie Grantham.)

Only for Special Branch types in London show up warning Wycliffe off investigating Durno any further.

Wycliffe is unhappy about this, especially after the body of a young escort shows up dead. All indications are that Durno killed her.

It turns out that Durno is involved with gun running for terrorists abroad and he has been under constant police surveillance.

A brooding episode of Wycliffe with a kind of story that could had been told in its normal running time.

Grantham never had much range and proves it here. There are smaller roles for Philip Glenister and Marc Warren. The new kids on the block for the cockney wide boy types.

There is a jolt ending which makes you think how hard did then police search for Durno's body.
