The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”
On top of Hulu’s rollout of a new interface, it’s also adding some major film and TV titles to its platform. Some of the highlights that set off the first day of April include “American Psycho,” “Shrek” and its sequel “Shrek 2,” plus the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man.”
Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.
Check out the “Tiny Beautiful Things” trailer:
Also arriving on Hulu in April is the series adaptation of the best-selling novel “Saint X.” The series is based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same name and follows a woman’s dangerous pursuit of her older sister’s disappearance on an idyllic Caribbean vacation. Through multiple timelines, the series explores all the traumatic ripples the mystery created for countless people. The series will star Alycia Debnam-Carey,...

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

NCIS: Los Angeles started a new chapter of crime-fighting when it returned to CBS for its Season 13 premiere on Sunday. However, series stars Chris O’Donnell, Daniela Ruah and LL Cool J weren’t the only ones in the spotlight in the premiere. Longtime crew member Michele Poulik was celebrated at the end of the episode, titled “Subject 17.”
“In loving memory of Michele Poulik, whose smile, presence, and and laughter, lit up every day,” a dedication card read ahead of the credits.
Poulik served as a set decorator on the long-running CBS drama, starting from 2009 to her final days. Poulik died Tuesday August 2, in her Los Angeles home after a long battle with cancer, per the Set Decorators Society of America. She is survived by her sister Janet.
The Toronto-born decorator began her entertainment career with the independent film Singing Birds, which she wrote and produced. Poulik worked on a...

Two men – in this case Horrible Bosses’ Charlie Day and 22 Jump Street’s Ice Cube – get into a fight. Who wins? We’d have thought the answer to that was blindingly obvious, but a new comedy called Fist Fight wants to make it happen regardless. Day and Cube are in talks to star in the film for New Line, which has a script from Van Robichaux and Evan Susser. The basic concept finds Day as a mild-mannered English teacher who must man up when a colleague at his school who thinks he’s trying to get him fired challenges him to a good old-fashioned punch-up. Unless he somehow gets out of it, or manages to learn some amazing ability, we’d suggest this ends with a Charlie Day pancake. And yes, it sounds a little bit like the 2001 Tim Allen comedy Joe Somebody. There’s no director attached yet, but...

Exclusive: Relativity has acquired Jump, a spec script by John Scott Shepherd that Sheldon Turner and Jennifer Klein will produce through their Vendetta Entertainment. It is a romantic dramedy in the vein of Jerry Maguire, with a strong male role at the center. Shepherd’s feature credits include Life Or Something Like It and Joe Somebody for Fox; his books include Henry’s List Of Wrongs, which originally sold to New Line in a seven-figure deal. Relativity will go right out to directors and actors. This is the first feature sale for Shepherd since he returned to Paradigm.

Here's a bitchy theory that I might believe in: Straight men usually aren't very socially intuitive thinkers, so they rarely relate to comic performers who don't, to a certain degree, resemble them. I notice in standup and on Twitter that a majority of straight male comics build their fanbase by specifically proving they relate to their fans, who are largely also straight and male. This, I feel, is the opposite tactic of the comics who are more often adored by gay men and straight women. We tend to like standout performers who represent themselves first and seem to say, "F*ck you if you don't relate to me." We value independence over like-mindedness, and that's why defiant personalities like Madonna, Kathy Griffin, and Bette Davis can be catnip to many of us. (I certainly subscribe to all three of those dames.)

Exclusive: I’ve learned that NBC is finalizing a deal for an off-cycle pilot order to single-camera comedy Save Me. The order to the project, from writer John Scott Shepherd, Sony Pictures TV and Neal Morirz’s studio-based Original Films banner, is cast-contingent. Save Me centers on a woman who, after an accident, starts to believe that she is channeling God. The project was originally developed at Showtime. Shepherd is executive producing with Original Films’ Moritz and Vivian Cannon as well as Scott Winant (Californication). Shepherd, whose credits include the features Joe Somebody and Life or Something Like It and the ABC series The Days, wrote the 2009 ABC drama pilot See Kate Run. This is the second project to get a pilot order by NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt after being originally developed at Showtime. The first was Smash, which Greenblatt first shepherded at the pay cable network during his stint there.

I've long talked about the Sandler curse, but with Grown Ups coming out today, and poor Salma Hayek playing the love interest opposite Sandler, I thought it might be instructive to look back at the wake of career destruction that Sandler has wrought since he became an A-list movie star. It's not pretty. In fact, with two exceptions -- Marisa Tomei and Drew Barrymore -- no actress that has starred as a love interest in a Sandler film has even come close to duplicating the box-office success of that Sandler film, save for Liv Tyler, who had a small blip with The Incredible Hulk, but has otherwise molsty disappeared from the film scene. In fact, in most cases, the actress playing opposite Sandler began a usually steep descent into relative obscurity or ultimately resorted to television work. Her film success has never been the same.

Great White is having great fun these days. The popular rock band, which began their rise to fame back in the mid 1980's, has assembled their core members and hit the road. Jack Russell, Mark Kendall, Audie Desbrow, Michael Lardie, and newcomer Scott Snyder say this time around they're having a blast, as they reacquaint themselves with longtime fans and welcome a new generation of admirers. With 13 studio albums and an impressive list of hits like Once Bitten Twice Shy, Save Your Love, Rock Me, House of Broken Love, and Call it Rock and Roll, Great White, like their music, has endured. PopStar recently had the pleasure of speaking with Michael Lardie, the guitarist for Great White, who discussses what life is like now vs. then, their current live tour, today's music, and a few thoughts on the bands past, present, and future. Michael, Great White has been playing together...

Before Tim Allen completely went off the rails, starring in flicks like Joe Somebody, Santa Clause 2 and 3, Christmas with the Kranks, The Shaggy Dog and Wild Hogs, he hit the screen in Galaxy Quest – an extremely underrated comedy. The 1999 flick, which followed the alumni cast of a cult space TV show having to save a real alien race, also starred Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Justin Long, Daryl Mitchel, Enrico Colantoni and Sam Rockwell. Paramount has now announced plans for a deluxe edition DVD. The disc will be available May 12 and come with 6 featurettes (Historical Documents: The Story of Galaxy Quest, Never Give Up. Never Surrender: The Intrepid Crew of the Nsea Protector, By Grabthar's Hammer, What Amazing Effects, Alien School - Creating the Thermian Race, Actors in Space), a Thermian Audio Track, deleted scenes, a Sigourney Raps feature and the theatrical trailer. Fox is adding a sci-fi flavor to its drama development slate with put pilot commitments to Amy After Dark, from writer John Scott Shepherd and Emmy-winning director Todd Holland, and an untitled drama from writer Christian Taylor. Dark, from 20th Century Fox TV, centers on a young female attorney in New York who joins the undead after she is bitten by a vampire. Shepherd will write the script, and 20th TV-based Holland is set to direct the pilot. Both are executive producing. Shepherd, who created the ABC series The Days, also penned the features Joe Somebody and Life or Something Like It.
Patrick Warburton is set to star opposite Martin Lawrence in 20th Century Fox's Rage Control. Warburton will play Larry Burgess, a junior high school basketball coach who has one of the best teams in the league. When coach Roy McCormick (Martin Lawrence) is suspended from college ball for attacking a referee, he is forced to coach a junior high team that is desperate to beat Burgess' team. Steve Carr is directing, with Robert Simonds producing. Tracey Trench serves as executive producer alongside Carr's producing partner, Heidi Santelli. Warburton's credits include the television series Less Than Perfect and Seinfeld and the feature films Men in Black II and Joe Somebody and the upcoming Bob Steel, First Time Caller. He's also voicing the character of Kronk in The Emperor's New Groove II. Warburton is repped by Paradigm and managed by Delores Robinson.

Joe Somebody helmer John Pasquin has closed a deal to direct Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality 2 for Warner Bros. Pictures. Shooting is scheduled to start in the spring in Los Angeles. The project-- a Castle Rock Entertainment presentation in association with Village Roadshow Pictures -- will find Bullock reprising her role as Special Agent Gracie Hart. There is no other talent attached to the project, according to the studio. Bullock will again produce from a script by Marc Lawrence, who also penned the original Donald Petrie-directed film. Released in 2000, the first installment cleared $100 million at the boxoffice from a budget in the $45 million range. Pasquin's deal to direct Bullock likely stems from their previous relationship: Pasquin helmed several episodes of ABC's George Lopez, which is produced by Bullock's production company, Fortis Films. His other credits include Payne, Soul Man, Jungle 2 Jungle, The Santa Clause and Home Improvement.

Universal Pictures has picked up the original comedy pitch One Nation Under Bob, which screenwriter John Scott Shepherd will write as a vehicle for Tom Shadyac to direct. Shadyac's studio-based company Shady Acres Entertainment will produce the project with Shutt-Jones Prods. Bob, an original idea developed at Shady Acres and Shutt-Jones, is a high-concept comedy centering on an average man who inherits a plot of land only to discover that it is a country unto itself and he is now the owner of a sovereign nation. The intent is to develop the project for a major comedic star. Shady Acres' Michael Bostick is producing the project with Buffy Shutt and Kathy Jones. Shady Acres executive Amanda Morgan Palmer will oversee the project with Universal's Holly Bario and Scott Stuber. Shepherd has written such projects as Joe Somebody and Life or Something Like It. Shadyac next directs the Universal/Shady Acres comedy Bruce Almighty, starring Jim Carrey, Jennifer Aniston and Morgan Freeman.
