Great Job on Ron O'Neal E! True Hollywood Story (2000)(TV)
riversja200131 May 2004
Very honest documentary about Ron O'Neal's rise and the impact on his career after making SuperFly. I found his perspectives about the Black community's middle class and poor neighborhood responses to the movie and his choice to do the role very interesting. He was able to admit that "the (SuperFly) experience left me upset. Controversy served to obscure my performance, which was not an easy thing to pull off. Outside New York, people assumed I really was a hustler. 'SuperFly' took me from relative obscurity, but I haven't been offered that many roles since." I was glad to hear him say that he did not apologize for doing the role, and that he understood why he took on the role at that point in his career. Said he to the interviewer, "If I had not taken the role, would we be talking right now?"

I am not sure if the Black community would be so vocal about SuperFly it if were made today, given the number of blaxploitation films like Boyz N The Hood, Juice, New Jack City, etc., but I am aware that many in certain parts of the Black community seem to blame SuperFly as the beginning for these genre of films.

Reference the E! True Hollywood Story, I liked having the other Black Stars speak about their work with Mr. O'Neal, and about the impact of these Black films on their careers, too. It appears that they, too, experienced the backlash from Hollywood that Mr. O'Neal experienced, too.

Will E! True Hollywood Story show Ron O'Neal's Biography again soon? If so, when? Will they show other Black stars from the 1970s Blaxploitation era?

Thanks,
