Mike Mignola might not be the most well known name in comics, but he's up there. Early in his career, the writer/artist worked as an inker at Marvel on titles such as Daredevil, Power Man and Iron Fist, The Incredible Hulk, Alpha Flight, and even a Rocket Raccoon limited series. He also did some work at DC, including covers for classic Batman stories such as A Death In The Family, and co-creating Gotham by Gaslight. Even with his work at the Big Two, Mignola is best known for creating Hellboy and the many spinoffs including Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson, and B.R.P.D., among others.
Mignola has been one of the driving forces behind the new Hellboy reboot starring David Harbour as the title character -- which has dropped the subtitle, Rise of the Blood Queen, according to IGN -- after being closely involved in the production of...

It looks like Warner Bros. is going to be developing another adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' The Watchmen, except this time it will be an animated film. It's also said that the Watchmen film will be rated R and that it could be the first in a new series of more mature animated films from DC Animation based on various DC properties,
The new originated at Filmbuff, and it apparently leaked out in an online marketing survey that shows the studio is looking to gauge interest in an animated Watchmen feature. The top line of the survey question describes the film as “upcoming.”
Some of the other titles mentioned in the survey include Moore’s classic 1980s run on Swamp Thing; Batman's A Death In The Family; Batman: The Long Halloween and the series Gotham Academy. They also include Superman's ElseWorlds story Red Sun; and the video game-inspired Injustice.

While Warner Bros. circulating surveys in order to gauge interest in which DC Comics properties they should adapt to animated films in the future is nothing new, they certainly are exciting to ponder over whenever they leak. And thanks to Film Buff Online, we have much to geek out over today, especially if you’re a fan of either Watchmen or Batman.
I guess we’ll talk about Watchmen first since nothing has been heard on that front outside of comics in quite some time. According to the report, such an adaptation could be the first in a series of animated movies, although we’re guessing such a thing would be contingent on the success of the first. Immediately, my mind shifts toward the various Before Watchmen miniseries that DC released several years ago, each of which could be mined for a string of flicks, but as the screenshot of...

George Clooney is paying tribute to his late cousin Miguel Ferrer, who passed away Thursday after a battle with cancer.
In a statement obtained by People, Clooney remembered the veteran actor, who he was fortunate to call a family member.

Comic Books 101: DC Comics-Reading Batman Pt 2
Previously I wrote an article helping new readers figure out the best places to pick up Batman from DC Comics . For those confused or still uncertain about major events in DC Comics (which connect to various “jumping on” points for Batman) I wrote an article detailing the big company altering stories in my history of the DC Universe article. This time around I am going to open up a bit more on the adventures of The Dark Knight, and take a look at some of the bigger, and in my opinion, best stories for potential Batman readers. This will include small and big story lines that exist in various continuities within the DC Comics publication history for the character. There won’t be any set “this is better than that” to the stories listed, simply moments in the characters publication where a...

Ryan Potter, the brilliant star of Big Hero 6, has made a viral video touting himself as Batman’s new boy wonder. Should Ben Affleck be listening?
Has any comic book icon in history proven quite so controversial as Robin, Batman’s perennial sidekick, occasional ward, and partner in crime-fighting? Chris O’Donnell’s paper-thin portrayal of Dick Grayson (along with George Clooney’s Batnipples and a script from the seventh layer of Hades) saw Joel Schumacher rudely ejected from the directorial hot seat after 1997’s critically reviled Batman & Robin. The sometime teen titan was so unpopular with fans that they voted to kill off the Jason Todd incarnation in the 1988-89 comic book story arc A Death in the Family. And so uncertain was Christopher Nolan about bringing back the perky superhero that he hid Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s version behind the unimposing moniker Sgt John Blake for almost all...

Despite the ho-hum critical response given to Batman: The Killing Joke earlier this summer, the animated film's stars were spared blame for the disappointing film. That's because they weren't any run-of-the-mill voice actors; They were Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy. The actors have carved out revered legacies for themselves as The Joker and Batman, respectively, in the last 20+ years that they've been associated with the characters. So when Batman: The Killing Joke didn't quite live up to its potential, fans knew better than to blame the iconic performers.
But now that Batman: The Killing Joke is behind them, do Hamill and Conroy see themselves tackling other sacred Batman stories? During an appearance at Canada's 2016 Fan Expo, the actors dropped two huge names.
When asked by a fan where they would love to go next, here's the playful exchange the actors had at their panel:

Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy recently attended Canada's 2016 Fan Expo, and while they were there they teased a couple DC animated film projects that could be in the works.
Those projects are the highly acclaimed Batman: Hush and A Death in the Family. During the Q&A portion of the panel, a fan asked what films were currently in development at WB's Animation department.
In response to the question, Conroy turned to Hamill and asked, "What do you think about Hush?" Hamill then asked Conroy, "Well, what do you think about A Death in the Family?"
The two could just be having fun with the fans, or these could be two films that are currently in early stages of development.
I'd like to be excited about this, but after with what they did with Batman: The Killing Joke, it's hard to be excited. That was such a terrible adaptation...

Are Batman: Hush and A Death in the Family set to be included in the next slate of DC Animated films? That's certainly what Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy seemingly indicated to the audience during their Canada 2016 Fan Expo panel. During the fan Q&A portion of the event, someone asked what titles were currently in development at Warner Bros. Animation's direct-to-video DC film department, which led Conroy to turn and ask Hamill, "What do you think about Hush?" Naturally, this produced some 'oohs and ahhs' from the audience. However, the crowd went absolutely wild when Hamill then followed up and asked Conroy, "Well, what do you think about A Death in the Family?" Are Conroy and Hamill having a lark with their fans or are animated adaptations of Jeph Loeb's Hush and Jim Starlin's A Death in the Family really in the works? At this past Sdcc,...

I’ve seen Suicide Squad twice already, and there’s a little Easter egg in there that I completely missed both times. It involves Harley Quinn and a superhero in the Dceu that she apparently killed.
The big reveal is mentioned during Harley Quinn’s introductory scene that lists her criminal history. According to The Wrap, there’s a big revelation there that some fans might think is cool and others might be pissed off about. If you don’t want to know the details, then don’t read ahead!
During Quinn’s intro as we get a brief and quick breakdown of her history, apparently, it says that she admitted killing Robin. The report says:

Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory, as implausible as it may be. It turns out Suicide Squad is not exempt from this fascination. There’s a rumor floating out there that The Joker is actually Batman’s one-time sidekick Robin (f.k.a. Jason Todd) returning as a bad guy. Robin was killed by The Joker in the Batman comic “A Death in the Family” in 1988. But Suicide Squad director David Ayer dismissed this idea in a July interview with Wsvn-tv. He said, “It ain’t the case. He’s not.” But backstories being what they are, you never know. Check out the video below or above and make up your own mind…...

One of the stranger rumors regarding the upcoming David Ayer "Suicide Squad" film, and indeed the DC cinematic universe as a whole, is that Jared Leto's The Joker sports a quite different origin story to anything that has come before.
In the comics, one of the most famous Joker storylines is the famed 'A Death in the Family' in which Joker beats Jason Todd, the second Robin the Boy Wonder, to near death and then kills him in an explosion. Todd famously came back years later as the villain the Red Hood.
With the appearance of a Joker-slain Robin's costume in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," it was indicated the events of 'A Death in the Family' happened before the continuity of the films and "Suicide Squad" might show us the murder in a flashback. One rumor though suggested a wild possibility - that...

"Twenty years in Gotham, how many good guy are left, how many stayed that way." That line from Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne in Batman v Superman drove fans crazy with trying to figure out who died and who turned to the dark side. One theory that absolutely would not die no matter how preposterous it seemed was the notion that Jason Todd went insane following an attack from the Joker, killed him and then decided to carry on his legacy. Sure, the Dceu is it's own thing but its doubtful that Ayer and DC Films co-chair Geoff Johns would subvert the legacy of A Death in the Family to such a degree. It's very likely that it is Todd's costume, riddled with bullet holes in the Batcave but that likely means he represent the "how many are left" portion of Affleck's line, not the segment implying that one of the good guys was corrupted.

Studio tour’s official Facebook page removes video that appears to confirm Zack Snyder drew on the controversial graphic novel A Death in the Family for Dawn of Justice
It was one of the most shocking scenes in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a suit belonging to a dead Robin daubed with The Joker’s graffiti: “Ha ha! Joke’s on you Batman!” Now a guide on the Warner Bros studio tour in Hollywood has apparently confirmed the demise of the caped crusader’s sidekick – Jason Todd version – at the hands of the clown prince of Gotham.

I am a big fan of how Ben Affleck's Batman turned out in Dawn of Justice. He is a completely badass version of the character, and I'm extremely excited to see what Affleck does with the hero in the solo film he's currently developing. It was recently revealed that the actor/director will have full creative control of the film, which I think is a great thing.
We've heard rumors in the past that the new movie would be based on A Death in the Family and Under the Hood comic arcs, but according to Birth.Movies.Death., that's not necessarily the case. In this version of the story, the Jason Todd version of Robin is killed and then returns from the dead as a vengeful villain. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice might be over a month old now, but the movie is still generating some juicy secrets for those who enjoyed themselves at the superhero slugfest. The new rumor comes from an Instagram post, of all places, posted on Wednesday, April 27, that possibly hints to the identity of Robin in the DC Extended Universe.
Seen in a glimpse of a shot in the Batcave – with some Joker graffiti smeared across its chest – was a suit apparently worn by Batman’s trusty sidekick Robin. Because of this, many fans believe the implication is that Joker killed Robin in this iteration of the universe, but the exact identity of which Robin it was remained a mystery.
That is, until now (maybe). As Cbm points out, the comic arc “Batman: A Death in the Family,” features the Joker killing Jason Todd, the second version of Robin (the first...

Ever since Ben Affleck's Batman was added to cast list of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and director Zack Snyder told San Diego Comic Con that he was inspired by Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns," the question of Robin has been on everyone's mind.
Christopher Nolan chose to cap off his "Dark Knight Trilogy" with a Robin tease, but that didn't seem to be enough for fans. Batman is a character with a rich, deep history so it’s somewhat surprising that the films mostly tell their own tales. All have taken loose inspiration from stories and themes rather than offering up more straight adaptations like Marvel and Fox have had much success. Still, with the Nolan trilogy quietly receding into memory and Batman v Superman due to hit next year, this could be the start of a new dawn for DC’s Dark Knight.
It’s going to be 2018 before Ben Affleck has his chance to dish out justice on his own terms, but Batman v Superman looks set to take more overt cues from the source material than ever before; specifically adapting sections from Frank Miller’s seminal work, The Dark Knight Returns.

Michael Stuhlbarg set to join impressive ‘Doctor Strange’ cast
Who would’ve thought Marvel could create such an eclectically interesting cast as they have for the one with Doctor Strange?
The Wrap reports that Michael Stuhlbarg, who was just seen in Steve Jobs and Trumbo, is set to join the cast for Doctor Strange, which is currently filming. The movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Steven Strange with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelson, and Tilda Swinton rounding out the main players.
Stuhlbarg caught attention in the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man and has since become a staple character actor, as seen this year. Ben Affleck's Batman may well do battle with the Red Hood in his first standalone movie...
This piece is rumour-based, but inevitably may contain a spoiler or two.
Ben Affleck debuts his take on Batman on the big screen next year, in Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. But after that, he's set to have a Batman adventure to himself, with the suggestion remaining that Affleck may well direct too.
But which direction will a Ben Affleck-fronted solo Batman movie take? Well, according to a new rumour posted over at Joblo, the film is likely to focus on the Red Hood (there's a strong animated movie, Batman: Under The Red Hood that's well worth getting hold of, incidentally). The Red Hood would then pretend to be Batman, leading people to label him a criminal (again), and setting up a showdown that also includes The Joker.

It hasn't even been officially confirmed by Warner Bros yet, but there are already storyline rumours about Ben Affleck's solo outing as Batman.
According to JoBlo, the film will reportedly combine two storylines from the comics involving Robin.
The main plot is rumoured to centre on the arrival of the Red Hood in Gotham City, where he impersonates Batman to make him look like a criminal, leading to a battle between the Red Hood, Batman and the Joker.
In the comics, A Death in the Family featured the death of former Robin, Jason Todd, by the Joker, while Under the Hood revolved around Todd's rebirth as the Red Hood.
The film is also rumoured to include the first Robin, Dick Grayson, as Nightwing.

The former sees the Joker murder the second Robin, Jason Todd, only for the character to be resurrected as the villainous Red Hood in the latter.
The site reckons the plot will stick pretty close to the source material, too, saying:
The basic plotline of Affleck’s [rumored director] solo Batfilm is that Jason Todd has returned from the grave as the Red Hood, working in the shadows to make people think he’s Batman, while making Batman look like a criminal. At the same time he leaves clues about his identity for Bruce/Batman to ultimately solve, leading to a confrontation that will involve Batman,...

Following their Wonder Woman details from last week, JoBlo reckon they've sussed out the plot of the next Batman movie, which might just have Ben Affleck in the director's chair. According to the site this movie will see the cinematic debut of The Red Hood, Aka the resurrected Jason Todd, and will be based (how closely is unclear) on both A Death In The Family, which saw Todd murdered by the Joker, and Under The Hood, in which he was raised from the dead via the Lazarus pit to seek vengeance against his former mentor. "According to our sources, the basic plotline of Affleck’s solo Batfilm is that Jason Todd has returned from the grave as the Red Hood, working in the shadows to make people think he's Batman, while making Batman look like a criminal. Following in the wake of their "Wonder Woman" plot details the other week, JoBlo have published a new report today dealing with the standalone live-action Batman movie at Warner Bros. Pictures.
The film will see Ben Affleck once again starring as Bruce Wayne, and this time he might potentially direct the project. Said report claims it will use story elements from both the "A Death In the Family" and "Under The Hood" comic arcs:

At the same time he leaves clues about his identity for Bruce/Batman to ultimately solve, leading to a confrontation that will involve Batman, Red Hood, and yes, The Joker, who will feature as a primary villain alongside Red Hood.

Smile everybody: Batman's arch nemesis The Joker is about to make a dramatic comeback in Suicide Squad, a villain-packed blockbuster about the worst scum DC Comics has to offer.
Jared Leto sports the rictus grin and shock of green hair, but there's much more to the Clown Prince of Crime than his iconic look - as these nine quick-fire facts demonstrate.
1. He's based on monochrome movie star Conrad Veidt
Batman comic book trio Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson are all credited with creating The Joker, but it was Finger who brought a crucial element into play: German screen actor Conrad Veidt.
When he produced an image of Veidt's pale-skinned, disfigured character Gwynplaine from the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs, lightning bulbs ignited and The Joker was swiftly born.
2. The Joker was once Bruce Wayne's mother

At the end of the ’80s, Batman fans killed Robin. Jason Todd, who replaced the now-grown-up Dick Grayson and became the second Robin, received an ireful response from readers, who abhorred Todd's ersatz aesthetics and personality. Dennis O'Neil came up with the idea of allowing readers to influence the character's fate, and a 900-number was set-up. Readers phoned in and voted on whether Todd should live or die. Ultimately, they voted thumbs down by a slim margin of less than 100 votes. Written by Jim Starlin and drawn by the great Jim Aparo (with an iconic cover by Mike Mignola), the arc "A Death in the Family" remains one of the most famous plotlines in Batman's vast mythos, as the death of Jason Todd haunted Bruce Wayne profoundly. You can read about the story of how fans came to kill Jason Todd in a new online comic by Tony Wolf...

A Death in the Family: Pialat’s Subtle Masterpiece of Familial Anguish
French auteur Maurice Pialat, the famed Palme d’Or winner who resisted being defined by a particular time, movement, or theme, receives another retrospective in 2015. Of the ten titles in his filmography, five have been chosen on this tour, several of them notable restorations of works that have become increasingly difficult to track down over the years. While more notable titles, like 1983’s A nos amours and his 1968 debut L’enfance Nue have received widespread recuperations (thanks in part to their placement within the Criterion collection), Cohen Media Group resuscitates some lesser known works. One of the most exciting of these is his 1974 title The Mouth Agape, a portrait of familial woe a bit less histrionic than other examples of societal strains evidenced on Pialat’s famous nuclear units and troubled couples. Documenting the death of a mother,...

It seems as if there’s a new theory about the nature of Jared Leto’s Joker in “Suicide Squad” nearly every day. Just last week, Leto’s hat selection while on vacation fired up the rumor mill. The hat had a similar look and feel to the Joker’s silhouette in Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke,” leading fans to speculate on the possible link between the graphic novel and his backstory in the DC cinematic universe. It’s certainly possible that there’s a connection, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar and sometimes a man wears a hat to avoid a sunburn. Having said that, speculation can be one of the more rewarding parts of the pre-release anticipation. So, let’s do some more of it! This particular rumor is drawn from Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Strikes Again,” and focuses on the Joker’s...

This article contains potential Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice spoilers.
If you weren't a fan of the first trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, perhaps this new one will make a believer out of you.

Just on the off chance that you haven't seen it yet, or maybe just want to watch it again, here it is. Then we'll get into the deeper stuff.
But there's an awful lot to unpack in these three minutes, so we'd better get to it.

You don’t need to be a comic book fan to instantly recognise The Joker. The villain is easily as iconic as Batman, and he’s been in existence almost as long as his greatest foe. Since then, there have been more classic tales featuring the Clown Prince of Crime to possibly count, whether it’s The Killing Joke, A Death in the Family, or any number of others.
Many iterations of the character have existed, ranging from the campy clown of the 1960s to the remorseless psychopath killer who murders men, women, and children on a whim.
To celebrate the character’s 75th Anniversay, an image was released of Jared Leto as The Joker, providing comic book fans with yet another radically different take on The Joker as the actor looks to follow in the footsteps of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. Regardless of looks though, what...

The world is abuzz this week with talk of Jared Leto's muscles and tattoos, all in aid of his role as The Joker in the Suicide Squad film.
Everyone has something to say about merits of having the word 'damaged' tattooed across his forehead (we think it's a bit on the nose - or just above at least).

So, Ben Affleck has been seen on the Toronto set of Suicide Squad, but that's not big surprise as it was always thought Batman/Bruce Wayne would have an appearance in that film. However, over at Latino Review they are suggesting there might be a little more to the story. The site is reporting a rumor they've heard that a new flashback sequence is being added to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that would feature The Joker (Jared Leto) killing Jason Todd (aka Robin), which gives reason to why he's in jail at the beginning of Suicide Squad. Personally that sounds like something better suited for Suicide Squad, but that's only because I tend to hate flashbacks in films and the idea of tacking one on at the last minute is even more cringe-inducing unless they plan on using said sequence as something of a stinger after the credits roll,...

The latest DC Cinematic Universe rumor to come from Latino Review’s El Mayimbe is an exciting one, as it opens the possibility for a fan-favorite character and Batman story arc to be adapted on screen, and hints that an up-and-coming directing duo might join the ranks of Warner Brothers’ DC team.

There’s a great moment in Mad Men when Pete Campbell describes his extramarital affair as a ‘temporary bandage over a permanent wound’. This line always resonated as such a perfect description of feeling like you’re faced with an impossible problem and the ways in which we can clutch at any potential solution to escape. At the end of season two, Norman passed his polygraph test and this seemed like a brief victory for the fractured family at the heart of this series; yet the deeper problem remained. 3.1 A Death In The Family, 3.2 The Arcanum Club
Bates Motel is a difficult show for me to watch objectively, as Psycho is my all-time favourite movie and I’m going to like just about anything connected to it (apart from the remake; that was just offensive). Unlike Hannibal, another series based on a horror property I love very much, I’ve never quite been able to figure out if I like Bates Motel because of its Psycho connection or because it’s a great show in its own right. But the fact that I’m asking that question at all probably answers it; Hannibal, after all, is unquestionably brilliant with or without an intimate understanding of the source material.
A key difference, however, is that Bates Motel is...

A death in the family is always unsettling, which may explain why adolescent James Charm (Kodi Smit-McPhee), whose father has just died, runs from imaginary(?) hooded creatures and has taken to telling people the dates of their own eventual deaths. If that sounds insufferably quirky, then you're not giving All the Wilderness, Michael Johnson's thoughtful debut, enough credit. Certainly our Chopin-listening, Carl Sandburg–reading (the poet's "Wilderness" provides both inspiration and backdrop for the film) protagonist has the potential for maximum melodrama. Unfortunately, James's behavior only serves to agitate mom Abigail (Virginia Madsen), while proving largely indecipherable to his therapi...

Marvel unleashes first Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser trailer
Everything we know so far about Avengers: Age of Ultron
Did Hydra hack Jarvis and spring a leak at Marvel? The first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron was due to arrive next week, but fans got a treat last night when the entire thing surfaced online.
As far as first looks go this is pretty epic, ramping up our excitement for the Joss Whedon-directed blockbuster. Digital Spy goes frame-by-frame with the trailer to pick out 7 talking points.
1. Oh Tony Stark, what have you done...?
We've recently heard about Marvel's plans to use Mark Millar's Civil War comic book run as inspiration for Captain America 3, and it looks like the seeds are being sown for a Stark-as-villain storyline here. Emerging from a tangle of old Iron Man suits is James Spader's Ultron, a sentient AI who's the big bad of this movie.

Apart from a handful of official images and a brief teaser which was shown exclusively to those at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, we don’t really know an awful lot about Batman V Superman.
Something which has been mentioned a number of times though is the fact that Ben Afleck’s Batman will be older and far more battle hardened than previous big screen versions of the Caped Crusader. The Gone Girl star has been spotted on set with grey temples, and new plot details shed some light on his Batman.
A new report claims that Batman has been operating for close to thirty years in Dawn of Justice, meaning that Bruce Wayne will likely be in his 50s. This version of Batman is an urban legend and “a creature of the night”, and no one has ever taken his picture. However, he’s still been very active as a superhero!

Image Comics
Despite its cast of extraordinarily powerful heroes and psychologically sadistic villains, for decades, the comic book universe was not a graphically violent place. Even when a character was brutally murdered, like Uncle Ben or Gwen Stacy, readers were very rarely exposed to scenes of blood, guts and gore.
But by the time Frank Miller burst onto the scene in the late 1970s and lent a dark, film noir-inspired sensibility to characters like Daredevil and Batman, the industry started to move in a more violent, blood-soaked direction. Other creators followed suit, and in 1982, Marvel launched its Epic Comics imprint, which featured more violent and explicit content that was geared towards adult readers.

"The "Bat-Man", a mysterious and adventurous figure, fighting for righteousness and apprehending the wrong doer, in his lone battle against the evil forces of society... His identity remains unknown."
Those exciting words started off a story in Detective Comics Issue number 27 in May of 1939, and the world was introduced to one of the most well-known and most recognized superheroes - The Bat-Man, as he was first called. National Comics (now DC Comics) was enjoying comic sales due to Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel's latest creation, Superman, and they were in the market for another caped crusader. Created by Bob Kane, he was little more than crude sketches until Bill Finger gave some suggestions that would make him iconic: The bat cowl, the color of the costume (Kane originally planned on having Batman wear a red union suit with black trunks and cape), and putting gloves on the hero.
