“The White Lotus” Season 3 has added Julian Kostov to its cast.
Kostov will appear in a recurring role in the HBO series that was previously held by Miloš Biković. Biković was recently cut from the series, however, over his support of Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the country’s war against Ukraine.
“Today, a targeted campaign has been unleashed against me, seemingly as an external maneuver to influence decisions that can create a disturbing precedent shadowing the essence of artistic freedom,” Biković previously said in a statement. “The result of such a narrative is the triumph of absurdity and the defeat of art.”
Kostov joins previously announced Season 3 cast members: Leslie Bibb, Dom Hetrakul, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Parker Posey, Tayme Thapthimthong, Christian Friedel, Morgana O’Reilly, Lek Patravadi, Shalini Peiris, Carrie Coon, Francesca Corney, Nicholas Duvernay, Arnas Fedaravičius, Natasha Rothwell, Walton Goggins, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Aimee Lou Wood, Sarah Catherine Hook,...

Wish you were here! Before 9/11, the U.S. Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay was best known for being the place where Jack Nicholson ordered a Code Red. Those were the good old days. Now Gitmo is stuck with a real stigma, as I found when I visited the base last week. Troops there clearly feel that they’ve been tarred with an unjustly large brush, and in many respects they have been. The truth is that the controversial detention camps—the only part of the base Obama wants to close—make up a relatively small (and new) part of Gitmo. The base itself is huge, covering 45 square miles, and resembles other military bases, with diversions like movie theaters, athletic fields, and a McDonald’s. Troops are constantly coming and going. A lot goes on there that has nothing to do with detentions. Families live there. Kids go to school there.

Lol did the company Code Red change their name to Scorpion Releasing to wash the stink of their past failures away? I'm not really sure, but all the other horror websites are raving about the 1980 slasher film Silent Scream finally coming to DVD, which I agreed was exciting news, until I noticed this on Shock Till You Drop; "Formed by Code Red's Walt Olsen, Scorpion Releasing will debut Silent Scream on DVD on November 24th." Code Red is kind of notorious with slasher fans for being a company that tends not to deliver on their promised DVD releases (Brain Hammer Vs. Code Red), but I will just assume this one will actually see the light of day on Nov 24. However, don't be surprised if this new company turns out to a dud like Code Red. Here is the press release everyone is posting:...

Earlier this year I reported on Code Red DVD planning to release the never-before-seen 1995 slasher spoof Night of the Dribbler about a psycho in a basketball mask killing off a high school basketball team. At the time a release date was not set in stone. Now I find out that release date is next week, September 8th to be exact.
As Code Red DVD's website describes it:
Night of the Dribbler, a comedy slasher shot in 1995 but never released anywhere in the world, will make its world debut via Code Red DVD this summer! Some psycho wearing a basketball mask is killing off the high school basketball team, and it's up to the famous TV funnyman Fred Travelena to find the killer! In the vein of Peter Sellers films, Fred plays 3 roles in the movie! Canadian TV's Cold Squad's Gregory Calpakis also stars in this demented comedy horror film...

Many movies unavailable on DVD are difficult to find, but if you beat the bushes with hard work and patience (online traders, DVD-Rs at collectibles shows, long out-of-print VHS tapes), most “rare” movies can eventually be tracked down. Then there are movies like The Farmer. I saw the violent revenge thriller The Farmer at the I-44 Drive-In movie theatre in Valley Park, Missouri in 1977 on a double-bill with John Flynn’s The Outfit. It’s a vivid memory and I recall my friends and I loving it and talking about it for months after. I began collecting movies in the early 80’s and just assumed The Farmer would one day find it’s way into my collection. But I’ve searched far and wide and here it is 2009 and, after years of it topping my want list, a return visit to The Farmer has eluded me. When I mention the title to fellow movie collectors,...

Freddie Francis helmed a number of excellent Hammer Horror films back in the day, not to mention the 1972 classic "Tales From the Crypt". His most sought after film, however, only saw a brief VHS release -- until now. Code Red offspring Scorpion Releasing will release Francis' highly sought after 1970 thriller "Girly," also known as "Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly" at a yet to be announced date. Sexy, teenaged, immature Girly and her camera-wielding brother Sonny bring home unsuspecting men to Mumsy and Nanny, where they play games, and if they don't follow the rules, they're sent to the angels. One day they bring home a New Friend who has a few ideas for games of his own, though, and he begins to turn the foursome against each other. As the poster reveals, this is one excellent looking horror film -- but one that apparently didn't do too well at the box office,...

VHS was my best friend for my teenage years. Seeing pictures of Scott’s latest “Never Forget” tattoo reminded me of all the Saturday nights I spent with various VHS tapes. For the majority of my middle and high school years, I would go to the Schnucks off of Butler Hill to peruse the horror isle. The great thing about this Schnucks was their video store was separate from the grocery store and they had a wide selection. Honestly, they had one of the biggest horror sections for the longest time. They also had a special where you could Rent One, Get One Free. The maximum amount of tapes you could rent out was 6 and I maxed it out every weekend night. My family would order Pizza Hut and I would grab a couple of slices and sneak back to my room to watch whatever I picked up earlier that night.

Some interesting vintage '80s horror films finally have DVD release dates this year, among them the 1987 classic "The Stepfather"! This is certainly the biggest news of all. "The Stepfather" is hitting stores October 13th from Shout! Factory, 3 days before the PG-13 remake hits theater screens. Meanwhile, on August 11, Code Red is unleashing the classic 1970 giallo "Weekend Murders" to DVD. As Code Red puts it: "The film is an Italian giallo also starring some lovely Euro actresses, a British comedian, and a tough guy Italian star playing against type as a bumbling constable. We have a brand new HiDef master in its original scope aspect ratio (2.35:1)." Plus, on August 18, Code Red is releasing "The Strangeness," a 1985 horror film from director David Michael Hillman. In it, A group of explorers surveying an abandoned goldmine are trapped in a cave in, and find themselves at the mercy of a slimy, mysterious creature.

I was ‘tweeted’ about a new Twitter phenomena this week. It’s called #firstdraftmovies (or #1stdraftmovielines or #1stdraftmovies).

Code Red DVD just sent Fango the specs for a trio of upcoming releases set to hit retailers later this summer.
On August 18th, Code Red DVD will unleash The Strangeness. It is 1980 and the price of gold is soaring. Old timers warn would be prospectors to stay away from the Gold Spike Mine. It has stood as a ghastly reminder of the horrors of a century before when the earth violently shook and over twenty miners were killed, their bodies stripped of flesh. The residents of Basin City talked of the grisly murders only in whispers from which legends of The Strangeness grew. A small group of explorers innocently make their way to the Gold Spike. Only one knows the incredible secret of the mine, and here the nightmare begins.....!
Nightmare USA's Stephen Thrower described the film as having, "Ominous atmosphere, flashes of humour, and a truly startling monster!

Our 'unjustly forgotten horror movies' series continues -- only now as a weekly feature. I just could not write one of these things each and every day. This week's title: "Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker." Released on VHS, never on DVD, "Night Warning," or "Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker" or "Nightmare Maker", is a highly entertaining piece of '80s cheese that deserves at least some kind of release today. Alas, it's too politically incorrect to ever get one. "Night Warning" enjoyed a VHS release from Thorn Emi before drifting out of print and never getting a proper release on DVD. Code Red announced it for a 2008 release, althought there's no sign of it hitting stores yet. Opening with an awesome freak accident -- a pair of parents on a road trip die horrifically when their brakes give out -- "Night Warning" gets off to a roaring start. The parent's 4 year old...

While MGM’s recent Pumpkinhead DVD celebrates one of Stan Winston’s greatest triumphs outside of his usual role of FX creator, this new disc reveals a chapter in his filmmaking history that has gone, if not unseen, than largely unacknowledged. One reason for that is the fact that while Winston shares a story billing on the actual movie with fellow makeup master Tom Burman and director Peter Foleg, the writing credits in The Unseen’s ad and press material, and thus almost all of the film’s reviews, and even the billing block on the DVD case cite Foleg and three different co-scribes (among them Texas Chainsaw Massacre veteran Kim Henkel). Add the fact that “Foleg” himself is actually a pseudonym for Danny Steinmann, who would go on to direct the fifth Friday The 13th, and there’s the clear suggestion of a creative history as tortured as any of the onscreen victims,...

Let me get this straight: the people responsible for Zombie Nightmare made a slasher spoof about a basketball team getting slaughtered by a psycho with the head of a Madball and somehow this has been allowed to sit on a shelf for almost 15 years?
Such a film is Night of the Dribbler and it would probably remain lost to the annals of time if it weren't for the fine folks at Code Red DVD. They posted the following on their blog this past weekend announcing their intentions to allow this obscurity to finally see the light of day:
Night of the Dribbler, a comedy slasher shot in 1995, but never released anywhere in the world, will make its world debut via Code Red DVD this summer! Code Red DVD has announced that it has discovered the negatives for legendary horror-blaxploitation-gangploitation film "The Devil's Express". After four long years of searching, we were convinced we would never find it, but we have just located the original negatives of the blaxploitation, kung fu, gangploitation, subway monster hybrid Devil's Express! The lab just inspected them and they have confirmed that indeed these are the original negatives, along with the trailer elements. We are getting ready to do a HiDef master and will be working on the extras soon. Hopefully we can have this out in September 2009! In this long lost 1976 film, Warhawk Tanzania plays an urban afro American, who hate the gang warfare all around him. In desperation, Tanzania summons a demon from the subway system to purge his neighborhood of punks. Unfortunately, the demons are uncontrollable, resulting in the deaths of several innocent people. .

Right off the bat, I'll tell you: We didn't even get close to 100 kills. But with two straight hours of violent mayhem that was punctuated only by the nostalgically caustic wit of Mr. Zack Carlson, I'd say this was definitely one of the most entertaining events of the whole damn festival. Plus, c'mon, 100 onscreen kills would take about five hours to appreciate -- and really, the Somewhere Between 35 and 40 Best Kills Party just doesn't have the same ring to it.
Listed below are all the clips that played at the first annual "100" Best Kills Geekfest, contributed by Zack Carlson, Lars Nilsen, and a small handful of loyal Alamo lunatics. If you have any suggestions, leave 'em in the comments section below. I'm sure Zack will want a nice gory list for Ff 2009.
Maniac (1980) -- Savini shotgun blast.Psycho 2 (1983) -- Mother shovel head.Goodbye Uncle Tom (1971) -- Something really disgusting.Powder (1995) -- Electric powder sprint.

A boatload of movies hit on a very few DVDs this Tuesday, August 19th, 2008. See what I mean below!
6 Films to Keep You Awake (2008)
Directed by Various
As the title implies, in this three-disc set are six brand-new short films from some of Spain’s most interesting directors like Paco (Romasanta, Rec) Plaza (“The Christmas Tale”), Alex (Day of the Beast) de la Iglesia (“The Baby’s Room”), and Jaume (Rec, The Nameless) Balaguero (“To Let”), just to name a few. Each film has its own “making of” documentary as well as other featurettes. Buy it here!
An American Crime (2007)
Directed by Tommy O’Haver
It’s strange to me that a movie with Ellen Page ... sorry, Academy Award nominee Ellen Page ... wouldn’t be able to get theatrical release, even if the subject of said film is about as taboo as you can get. American Crime is an adaptation...
