Well made character piece
bob the moo31 August 2002
In an African slum, Shadow has a reputation as a killer – a vigilante. He has wounds on his stomach from his last fight and he sets out to find a bath to wash them. However his guilt haunts him and his visions are eating at his soul. At situation which is brought to a head when the villagers catch a rapist and demand Shadow kill him.

A South African short that mixes visions with grim reality to slowly reveal Shadow's place in the town. The visions are well shot and are vivid without taking away from the story – rather they tell us of Shadow's state of guilt and suffering.

The performances are all good – Nyakale is excellent with a difficult character and the people of the village are all convincing. It's all a bit bleak and the meaning is a little hard to find but it is a good look at a lost soul – a man lost by his own actions.

Overall this is very well made and tells us the current story and back story at the same time by mixing action with visions that show us the mindset of Shadow – caused by the life he has chosen for himself.
