Sex & Nudity

  • A woman is shown giving birth. She is covered with a sheet and no body parts are visible. When she asks what sex is the child, the doctor in attendance replies that the baby has "testicular and there or thereabouts a tinkle" before holding up a naked baby boy (seen from a distance).
  • A woman nurses an infant, revealing part of her breast.
  • A man who has fainted is stripped naked in order to examine him (no body parts are visible). Later he revives and runs away, still naked. We see a brief glimpse of his buttocks. This is played for comedy.
  • A humorous running gag revolves around a woman who has stuffed a hot water bottle down her shirt in order to create cleavage; the water bottle keeps slipping, causing her to constantly hitch at her "bosom."
  • A woman's virginity and sex drive is discussed in an indirect, humorous way.
  • A handsome young man keeps finding various (non-sexual) reasons to take off his shirt. While his actions are generally non-sexual, a running joke involves women swooning whenever this happens.
  • A young man throws a nearly naked girl to a bed and kisses her passionately.

Violence & Gore

  • In two separate scenes, newborn babies are shown covered in blood.
  • A man has a cat flung at his face, which scratches his cheek. Blood is shown briefly.
  • Two men fight to the death with swords. One of them is killed and shown bleeding from his wounds and his mouth.
  • A knife-fight between two men leaves both bleeding. One of them dies.
  • A woman dies in childbirth. There is a long shot of her body with some blood around it.
  • A man is set on fire. He is shown screaming and flailing. Before he dies, he grabs hold of his murderer, likewise setting him on fire. Later the murderer's scarred face is shown.
  • Several members of the house guard are killed with stones from a slingshot, but there is only brief sight of blood. In one case we see a man fall over with a small hole in his forehead.
  • A monkey's tail is chopped off. We hear the animal scream, and there is a shot of the tail wriggling on the floor.
  • An elderly woman is murdered by poison. Her death happens off-screen and is only remarked upon by the grieving characters.

Profanity

  • Incidental use of mild language (hell, damn, ass, shit).

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Adults are shown drinking various kinds of alcohol in social contexts (at a party, at a formal dinner, etc).

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A family, including an infant, is shown trapped in a burning building. This scene is prolonged and intense, although everyone escapes safely.
  • The skeletons of two women are show seated in chairs as if they are alive. It is implied that these women were deliberately starved to death. A man causes the skeletons' heads to topple off. He then pretends to kiss one of the skulls.
  • A man commits suicide by allowing himself to be torn apart and devoured by owls. His death is shown but is not graphic.
  • A man suffers an episode of madness/senility in front of his daughter. While this is not graphic, the girl's visible distress and the idea of a parent who has forgotten his own child may disturb young viewers.
  • The head cook, Swelter, is a visually frightening character who is implied to abuse the children in his care. He is generally portrayed in a loud, manner that might be unsettling to a small child. Later, Swelter is shown sharpening a cleaver, then using it to slash a side of beef, which drips blood. His dialogue indicates that he is "practising" to murder another character. The scene, coupled with the character's nature, may be frightening.
  • A girl is struck by lightning and dies.
  • A girl commits suicide by jumping from a window into a river. Her body is shown sinking.
