Chilling Marriage secrets in fogged out Kashmir
csn_6125 June 2011
Aamne Saamne starring Shashi Kapoor and Sharmila is real good murder mystery, plot-wise..The suspense and identity of the murderers and some mysterious attempts on Sharmila's life during her honeymoon with Shashi ; Shashi's own hidden past and his real intentions keeps you guessing..

Kalyanji Anandji , it looks like, have been impressed by the Director that this is a suspense thriller and hence they go ballistic with a cacophony of cymbals and jazz instruments to ear shattering proportions annoyingly..Silence and natural sounds would have suited thrilling scenes better...Madan Puri and Prem Chopra bring in the required amount of villainy, but it is not easy to guess the criminal till the end.. The film by itself is good overall...It is only some silly comedy tracks by Rajendranath and Shammi and a couple of avoidable duets that derail the film from time to time.If you can fast forward those scenes, you could enjoy this murder mystery well..I could not understand the unseemly hurry from the Director in revealing a complicated murder plot orally by the villain in the last scene in last 1.5 minutes..That is all it took to tell the whole plot of the neatly created 2 hours of suspense story!!....Why he could not have spent more time and detail on revealing the suspenseful end is baffling...May be he just ran out of the film reels? Shashi Kapoor is the chocolate hero and Sharmila sports some bold dresses giving skin show , a rare sight for 1960s

Actors Shashi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore carry this storyline well. Is Shashi a killer, you will find out in the last 2 minutes.

Deepak transforms into Gopal (Shashi Kapoor) and marries Sapna (Sharmila Tagore). Deepak has a sordid past which he does not share with Sapna. Deepak had been accused but acquitted of the murder of his ex-wife Vimala. Through much of the movie Sapna lives a life of suspicion, fear and unease. Gopal (Deepak) loves Sapna, but the barriers of suspicion and fear are hard to break through. While the story is unusual and interesting, acting of the principals is good, direction, development of the plot is poor. Keeping a finger on the FAST FORWARD button is a good precaution for when you come to the bits that (1) have little to add to the storyline or (2) just a waste of time. Regardless it is a good movie to watch.

Comedy - Thriller

Warning: Spoilers
A slow first ten minutes, where we establish some plot, all of which gets totally forgotten the minute Sharmila Tagore enters the film. Then it's a rom-com melodrama, and I found myself forgetting that it was supposed to be terrible because it was often so engaging. This would rate 6 or 7 stars, and features some really lovely Kashmiri vistas that we can almost see, because it looks like it was transferred from somebody's old VHS.

Then begins the second hour, when somebody remembered what the plot was supposed to be, and character development comes to a tediously dead stop. This is a great example of how even the best of actors can't overcome bad writing or unimaginative direction; at this point one might as well skip to the confession which supposedly happens in the last two minutes, leaving a net worth of about 50 minutes of enjoyable film.

Still, you can't beat the wonderful presence brought to this film by both Shashi Kapoor and the incomparable Sharmila Tagore, who gives us a gratuitous bath scene in which she's STILL wearing that laughably huge wig. It's hard to imagine a better-looking couple, so don't imagine, go ahead and watch Aamne Saamne -- or at least half of it. Just don't expect to watch the whole thing, or care about the plot.
