Chicago – If a “Mount Rushmore” of American film critics was ever considered, one of the men that would be a strong candidate is Leonard Maltin. An influential film essayist, critic and historian since the 1960s, Maltin also wrote the go-to directory for film buffs prior to the internet, “Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide.”
Maltin’s love of film began in his childhood in Teaneck, New Jersey. He turned that love into self publication at the age of 15, distributing “Film Fan Monthly,” a fanzine dedicated to films from the golden age of Hollywood. This publication led to the next phase in his life, which he relates in a story below. The “Leonard Maltin Movie Guide” became the bible for film lovers – again before the internet – solving many a movie dispute and leading to the phrase “let’s look it up in Maltin.”

This story first appeared in the Dec. 14 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. The road to Hollywood hell is paved with fallen musicals. Since Chicago won the Oscar for best picture in 2003, they’ve landed with Richter-level thuds — from 2004’s The Phantom of the Opera, which earned $51 million, less than its production cost; to 2007’s Sweeney Todd, one of the few failed collaborations between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton; to the Daniel Day-Lewis starrer Nine (2009), which positively flatlined. So it was with some trepidation that Working Title Films, the London-based production company headed

Comic hit in The It Crowd and leading man in Bridesmaids, Chris O'Dowd is now pushing at an open door in Hollywood
In January 2009, Chris O'Dowd bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles. By this point, he was best known for his role in the Channel 4 sitcom The It Crowd, written by Graham Linehan (Father Ted, Black Books), and had acted in a few British films of varying quality – the 2005 black comedy Festival, Richard Curtis's The Boat That Rocked, the as yet unreleased Hippie Hippie Shake, co-starring Sienna Miller. It looked increasingly as though O'Dowd might be yet another good actor destined to drift along in roles of middling quality. He'd also just come out of an eight-year relationship. And so he took a risk. He didn't have any "highfalutin ideas", he recalls. But, hey, why not?

The road to Hollywood is littered with professional wrestlers who have attempted to cross over from the squared circle onto the red carpet. The strike rate has not been great (Hulk Hogan's turn in "Mr. Nanny" should provide sufficient evidence of that), but then again, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has certainly fashioned himself into a bankable movie star.
Paul "Triple H" Levesque is on the right path. Not only does he already have a few non-wrestling film and television appearances under his belt (he had a memorable turn in "Blade: Trinity"), but when selecting his first headlining role, he eschewed the obvious road as an action star in favor of a more nuanced role in a family comedy: "The Chaperone," which had a brief run in theaters and will come to DVD and Blu-Ray next week.

Even though they said that Denver was the last stop in American Idol's nationwide audition tour, they lied. Because tonight we'll cram other noteworthy auditions that didn't quite make it in the city-specific episodes over the last few weeks into tonight's show. This episode was originally called "The Best of the Rest", until the folks at Fox changed it to "The Road to Hollywood". That makes tonight's episode a little pointless, at least to me. Uhh, why do we have to do this again? Can't we just go straight to Hollywood and Ellen DeGeneres?
Well, we're here anyway. And take comfort: this is the last audition show before Hollywood. One more hour of train wrecks (unless we believe the "we saved the best for last" line in last night's tease), delusional contestants, and Ryan Seacrest being very patronizing about contestants who are either "survivors" or have "faced the odds". And,...

The key dates of "American Idol" season 9 are unveiled, America will get to vote for their favorites starting February 23. As previously revealed in its midseason schedule, Fox would premiere the singing competition on January 12. The date will be kicked off with the audition in Boston where Victoria Adams serves as guest judge.
After the premiere, "Idol" will continue with several audition episodes between January 13 to February 2. There will be a special episode called "The Road to Hollywood" before the show commences with the Hollywood Week rounds on February 9 to February 17. Ellen DeGeneres who replaces Paula Abdul as the permanent judge will join the lots in the Hollywood Week.
Instead of going from Top 36 to straight Top 12, the show changes the format a bit by going straight to Top 24 comprised of 12 women and 12 men. Audience will then get to pick the finalists whose struggle to victory will begin on March 16. Another...

I imagine that the video game-loving readers out there will back me up on this: "Call of Duty" is ready-made for a big screen adaptation. Preferably one built around the universe created in Infinity Ward's "Modern Warfare" titles, the second of which hits store shelves in November. The series of military-themed first-person shooters has long since distinguished itself as an industry leader, with explosive set pieces, benchmark-setting visuals and Hollywood-caliber writing.
Mega-publisher Activision apparently agrees. Trademark watchdog Trademork.com (via /Film) spotted a September 21, 2009 filing to protect the title in relation to “pre-recorded movies featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure, music, theatrical performances and/or animation.” This doesn't mean that a production is ramping up, simply that Activision is clear to begin making such plans.
That said, I'm hoping there are people in positions of power with serious plans for a "Call of Duty" movie. I'm no small fan of the series,...
