Warning: contains Major Spoilers for series three of Slow Horses
Was series three the best yet for Apple TV’s spy thriller Slow Horses? It was certainly the series with by far the most action, the highest kill count, and the biggest secrets. So… yes, actually.

If you’re looking for a guide to what actually happened to make sure you didn’t miss anything, here’s all your Slow Horses series three questions answered:
What Secret Was Donovan’s Girlfriend Alison Trying to Expose?

In theory, Slow Horses should not work as an ongoing series, whether in the books by Mick Herron or the Apple TV+ show that returns for its third season today. The stories involve a group of disgraced British spies, consigned to a dingy office where they’re not meant to do any important work, but who keep stumbling into major cases, and acquit themselves well doing so. Once seems like a fine idea for a story. But two? Three? Or, in the case of the books, eight? At a certain point,...

Exclusive: The first call Stephen Garrett made after acquiring the rights to suspense-fuelled book Culprits: The Heist Was Just the Beginning was to writer and director J Blakeson, who he hailed as “the real deal.”
Blakeson “has seen every crime movie and thriller. You can’t catch him out really,” Garrett pronounced sagely. He was ideal, then, to write and direct the TV adaptation of the multi-layered, heart-stopping anthology, edited by Richard Brewer and Gary Phillips.
The result is Culprits, an eight-part thriller starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett in a career-changing role, and Gemma Arterton, about the maelstrom that swirls after a gang of ruthless thieves pull off an ingenious heist.
Disney+ streams Culprits in the UK and Ireland on November 8 and in the U.S. on December 8 on Hulu. Garrett is executive producer, as are showrunner, writer and director Blakeson, and Johanna Devereaux. It’s produced by Morenike Williams.

On the Friday after Tom Wambsgans became the new puppet CEO of the Waystar-Royco media empire, the actor who has spent the past five years essaying the character’s ups, downs, and withering one-liners is propping up the bar of a small boutique hotel in London’s Chelsea. Matthew Macfadyen is nursing a lime tonic and contemplating a rest after several months of hard work on Succession’s blockbusting fourth season. In some other world, one imagines his fictional alter-ego is already discovering the poison in the chalice of the job he has spent a lifetime coveting. Macfadyen, instead, is content simply to think ahead to a quiet family dinner, and to reflect on the adventure of his past half decade.
“I’ll miss it,” he says quietly of his time on Succession. “It was such a lovely, lovely job.”
So confidently has Macfadyen brought his character to life through...

What would it take for you to believe that your partner has been compromised by a foreign power? Muttered Russian words in their sleep? A stash of secret documents under the floorboards? Mysterious phone calls during movie night? These are the questions posed in Netflix’s new conspiracy thriller, Treason, which finds Charlie Cox at the reins of MI6 but under the spotlight of both the CIA and his wife.
Adam Lawrence (Cox) becomes the new C, head of the Secret Intelligence Service, after his predecessor (Ciarán Hinds) is poisoned in a London private members’ club. “Your whole career has been building up to this,” his wife Maddy (Oona Chaplin) tells him. “Will you still be taking the bins out?” Of course Adam will still be taking the bins out! If you’ve seen the British satire “Toast of London,” chances are that voiceover engineer Clem Fandango’s name still rings in your ears. Now Shazad Latif, the man behind Fandango, Ash Tyler on “Star Trek: Discovery” and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on “Penny Dreadful,” has nabbed his first romantic lead in “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”

Shetland’s Series 7 return is a bittersweet one for fans of the Scottish BBC crime drama. The six-episode run will be actor Douglas Henshall’s last in the lead role of Di Jimmy Perez. British independent comedy feature “The Effects of Lying” has completed post-production and will be screened for distributors at BAFTA.
Based on a script by James Hey (“Doctors”), and directed by Isher Sahota (“Hollyoaks”), the film follows a dutiful husband and loving father whose life falls apart when decades of festering secrets are exposed and he’s forced to face up to who he really is. The cast includes Ace Bhatti, Laila Rouass, Navin Chowdhry, Shaheen Khan (“Mogul Mowgli”), Lauren Patel (“Everybody’s Talking About Jamie”), Adam Bregman and Mark Williams (the Harry Potter franchise).
Variety caught up with the cast and crew of the film on set in London during principal photography.
The central family in the movie happens to be British Asian. “It’s not a British Asian Film. It’s a film about family, about secrets, about loss, about desire,” says Sahota of the project, which is his debut feature.

James Corden is heading back to London.
However, despite all of the rumors of him moving permanently back to Blighty, in this moment, he’s taking The Late Late Show to the British capital for the first time in three years.
The CBS late-night show s heading to the UK for a special week of broadcasts from June 27-30 – the first time it has been able to mount such a production since Covid began.
The series will be shot at the Freemasons’ Hall in London – known for its opening scene of British spy series Spooks – and it marks the fourth time that the late-night show has been made across the pond.
Corden tells Deadline that these shows “have always been amongst our best shows we’ve ever done.”

Imagine 24 with an inferiority complex, or James Bond as an unloved Eeyore of the spy trade. That’s the clever premise of Apple’s offbeat six-episode thriller Slow Horses, based on Mick Herron’s books set at Slough—rhymes with “ow”—House, a dumping ground for disgraced “slow horse” agents. It makes perfect sense that Graham Yost, a specialist in witty underdog crime drama (Justified), is among the executive producers. Apple TV+ These sad sacks toil in obscurity in a rundown office building doing drudge work under the obscene rule of slovenly supervisor Jackson Lamb, once a top spook at Mi-5. Lamb, a faded lion, is truly the boss from hell: insulting, unruly, delivering his jaded harangues with his feet (invariably clad in socks with holes) on his cluttered desk, spewing cigarette smoke like a chimney. You wouldn’t want to smell, let alone know, him. “Bringing you up to...

If there’s one thing that spy stories usually have plenty of, it’s hierarchy. No matter what the target – plutonium, renegade scientists, renegade scientists with plutonium – there inevitably comes a point when someone pulls rank and invokes the chain of command. After all, how can someone go rogue if they were never part of a rigid authority structure to begin with?
The new Apple TV+ drama “Slow Horses” inflates that dynamic, centering its story on a ragtag band of intelligence-gathering misfits, the collective low rung on Britain’s Mi-5 ladder. Their gruff leader Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) – to call him a curmudgeon seems wholly inadequate – rules his rundown makeshift office suite by berating his staff of castoffs. One particular target of his misanthropy: River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), whose recent glaring professional gaffe has taken him from potential prime field agent work to sifting through a journalist’s trash bags.

Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies, and many more, at Trailers From Hell. This week, we feel those trick-or-treaters breathing down our necks with a few comical ghost stories.
1964 brought us The Comedy of Terrors from American International Pictures. Mixing comedy and horror makes me think of the clock radio analogy I have mentioned before – you either get a good clock or a good radio. Aip, though, had a way with the genre, and the heavyweight names who made it work – Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre and Basil Rathbone. They got most of the Tales of Terror gang back together for this one.
The 19th century yarn centers on felons, miscreants and a drunk undertaker who drums up his own business and has only one coffin – which he recycles. Love plays a role, too, as Joyce Jameson ends up involved in the farce.
