From Paul King, writer/director of the “Paddington” films, David Heyman, producer of “Harry Potter,” “Gravity,” “Fantastic Beasts” and “Paddington,” and producers Alexandra Derbyshire and Luke Kelly (“Roald Dahl’s The Witches”), comes an intoxicating mix of magic and music, mayhem and emotion, all told with fabulous heart and humor. Team Experience has been looking at LGBTQ+ related Oscar nominations. Tonight we're serving lewks!

For a movie with iconic nude scenes, the costumes of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) are just as memorable and titillating. It’s fitting that the Oscars honored the incredible work of costume designers Ann Roth and Gary Jones for the film, which should’ve shown up in more categories than the five it was nominated for. Though the actual Oscar went to Lindy Hemming’s period-specific and gloriously gaudy work in Topsy-Turvy, we’re still cheering on the sidelines for Ripley.
Let's count down the 10 queerest looks from the movie...

It won’t be “Another Year” after all before we see Mike Leigh’s next movie.
The seven-time Oscar-nominated British filmmaker behind classics new and old like “Secrets & Lies,” “Happy-Go-Lucky,” and “Topsy-Turvy” hasn’t released a picture since his 2018 epic “Peterloo” got backed by Amazon. The director in February 2020, of all times, announced a new project with U.S. distribution courtesy of Bleecker Street. The rest is history, and now, three years later, the film is starting to take shape.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Leigh’s next movie, financed by Film4 and set for a hometown U.K. release from eOne, will at last begin production this year. But there’s a catch for the next film from the “Vera Drake” writer-director, which is that any details remain not just scarce but nonexistent: The project is reportedly so secret that plot specifics are not only being kept...

1885 The Mikado, Gilbert & Sullivan's beloved comic opera, premieres in London. The Oscar winning film Topsy Turvy (1999) depicts its production in exquisite detail. Timothy Spall will star alongside Lesley Manville in the Masterpiece, BritBox UK and Eleventh Hour Films adaptation of “Magpie Murders,” Anthony Horowitz’s international bestseller.
Spall will play detective Atticus Pünd in the mystery-within-a-mystery in “Magpie Murders.” In the story, book editor Susan Ryeland (Manville) sits down to read the latest manuscript written by her popular author, Alan Conway, the writer behind the popular Atticus Pünd mystery series. When she discovers that its final chapter is missing, she goes to Conway’s house only to find his dead body. The story goes back and forth between the cozy case Pünd was trying to crack and Ryeland’s investigation of what happened to Conway.
Horowitz, who created the BBC mystery shows “Foyle’s War” and “Midsomer Murders,” has adapted “Magpie Murders” as a six-episode series. Production begins next week in England and Ireland, and “Magpie Murders” will air on Masterpiece on PBS next year.

The film world loves to discover a new director with a strong voice. That’s what Francis Lee created with “God’s Own Country,” a rare look at rural working-class men in love. Lee knew the terrain: He grew up gay in the Northern Yorkshire moors depicted in the film, and still lives there. Without being able to afford film school, he figured out that acting would be his best shot at breaking into writing and directing. “I did not have a great education or access to it,” he said.
Lee studied drama, struggled with an acting career (including two lines in Mike Leigh’s 1999 “Topsy-Turvy”), and worked at a junkyard as he figured out how to cobble together financing to make a series of shorts and then “God’s Own Country.” The movie broke out at Sundance 2017 and launched actors Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”) and Alec Secareanu (“Strike Back”) on the world stage.

Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren are not just thespian royalty in the UK, they have both been crowned winners at previous Venice festivals: Mirren for her regal performance in Stephen Frears’ The Queen and Broadbent for his portrayal of W. S. Gilbert in Mike Leigh’s Topsy Turvy. Together, they appear in The Duke, Roger Michell’s highly entertaining spin on a remarkable true story from 1960s Britain.
The duke in question is the Duke of Wellington, specifically a portrait painted by Goya that was purchased for £140,000 by the British government in 1961 in order for it to remain in the country. The purchase is all over the news and throngs of visitors make their way to the National Gallery in London to view it.
But this tale does not take place in the soon to be swinging capital. The setting is Newcastle upon Tyne, home to the garrulous Kempton Bunton (Broadbent) and his long-suffering wife,...

Timothy Spall stars in a fascinating, surprisingly non-morbid look into the life of Albert Pierrepoint, England’s reluctant celebrity hangman who dispatched hundreds of convicted killers, including Ruth Ellis and John Christie, not to mention 47 Nazi war criminals, in a literal marathon of the gallows. The artist of the noose kept up a double life to separate his execution duties from his domestic marriage … until General Montgomery blew his cover of anonymity. Eddie Marsan and Juliet Stevenson provide terrific acting support in this undeservedly obscure gem from director Adrian Shergold.

After years of talking to Mike Leigh, whether at the Carlton Beach at Cannes, on a gondola at Telluride, or a plush hotel suite in Toronto, I’ve gotten used to being reminded that — in his eyes — I don’t know enough about his movies. That’s how he rolls.
Here’s what I do know: At age 76, Leigh has delivered the most ambitious, gorgeous, and expensive period recreation of his storied career, “Peterloo.” And, at $18 million, the film stood very little chance of making money for Amazon Studios. While he is deeply respected as one of the finest living auteurs with his exacting and unique creative process, his top-grossing movie was “Secrets & Lies,” back in 1996. That film, which received five Oscar nominations for October Films, made $26.4 million in today’s dollars — and it was released more than two decades ago, when independent films occupied a different place in our culture.

Details of Patty Jenkins follow-up to 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ have started to trickle through from one of the producers that confirms ‘1984’ will not be a sequel.
Producer Charles Roven has hinted to Vulture that there will be hardly anything tying the two films together and that Gal Gadot’s ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ will, in fact, be a standalone movie much like we would expect from ‘Bond’.
“[Jenkins] was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel. And she’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana-slash-Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years. But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling.”
“It’s a stand-alone film in the same way that Indiana Jones or Bond films are, instead of one continuous story that requires many instalments.

“Peterloo” was the most British film at the London Film Festival. It chronicles a true-life British story plucked from history, is set in Manchester, features an entirely British cast including Rory Kinnear and Maxine Peake, and is written and directed by British filmmaking royalty Mike Leigh.
Leigh has been nominated for an impressive 13 Baftas – and has won three of those bids. He won the first two of these in 1997 for “Secrets & Lies,” with the British academy awarding him both Best Original Screenplay and Best British Film. In 2005, he picked up the Best Director prize for “Vera Drake.”

Amazon Studios has moved the North American release of Mike Leigh’s historical drama “Peterloo” out of this fall’s awards season, from Nov. 9 to April 5, 2019.
The movie, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, re-creates the 1819 massacre by armed government militias who charged into a crowd of 60,000 people in Manchester who were demanding reforms in parliamentary representation for the working class. As many as 15 people were killed and up to 700 were wounded.
“The fall and end of year is a very busy time, whereas the spring is a better playtime to ensure the film is getting the time in theaters to find audiences and secure the best cinema locations,” an Amazon Studios rep said.
Guy Lodge gave “Peterloo” a positive review for Variety, but admitted that its box office appeal could be limited: “Nothing about this grim passage of history was easy for its victims, and ‘Peterloo’ sets out...

Update, Oct. 2: Amazon Studios is now moving Mike Leigh’s Peterloo out of the fall frame after the British historical epic played the fall film festival triad of Venice, Telluride and Tiff. The new date is April 5 next year. Variety‘s Guy Lodge calls the film “a stately, explicitly rhetorical paean to the people – setting the past in stone while also lashing out at a present-day political order” with New York magazine giving a shout out to the pic’s visceral finale.
Amazon’s upcoming awards season focus will be Suspiria (Oct. 26), Beautiful Boy (Oct. 12) and Poland’s foreign film Oscar entry Cold War from director Pawel Pawlikowski (Dec. 21).
Previous, July 2: Amazon Studios has designated November 9 as the official release date for Mike Leigh’s Peterloo. Among the pic’s major-studio limited competition is Sony’s Gary Hart pic The Front Runner.

Robin Wright is all set to reprise her role of General Antiope for Wonder Woman 1984. Although Antiope was killed off, Wright will be joining Chris Pine as Steve Trevor in returning from the dead for the sequel.
However, General Antiope’s return is looking like a more plausible one. She is expected to appear in a flashback scene with co-star Connie Nielson as Diana’s mother Queen Hippolyta.

Anyone who has experienced Mike Leigh‘s body of work can appreciate the fact that he clearly loves his country and its people. The prolific filmmaker has chronicled numerous eras of England’s history from modern-day dramas such as“Secrets and Lies” and “Happy-Go-Lucky,” to the Victorian era of “Topsy-Turvy,” to the stifling conservative morals of the 1950’s in “Vera Drake.” After segueing to the life of a celebrated 19th-century British artist in 2014’s “Mr.

The prolific composer Hans Zimmer has been confirmed to score the Wonder Woman follow-up, 1984.
This will be the first time Zimmer has returned to the DC universe after effectively ‘retiring’ from the comic book genre after Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. He vowed never to return only to be swayed into producing the score for the troubled X-Men: Dark Phoenix which is currently undergoing reshoots.

Starring Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, Neil Bell, Philip Jackson, Vincent Franklin, Karl Johnson, Tim McInnerny, Amazon Studios will release Peterloo in theaters November 9, 2018.

Leigh’s career has been nothing short of brilliant. His films include Secrets & Lies (1996), Topsy-Turvy (1999), Vera Drake (2004), (Happy-Go-Lucky 2008) and the biopic Mr. Turner (2014).

Four years after earning critical acclaim and four Oscar nominations with “Mr. Turner,” Mike Leigh is returning to the historical period drama with “Peterloo.” Amazon Studios has debuted the first trailer for Leigh’s historical epic, starring Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, and Neil Bell, and the footage makes it clear Leigh has crafted one of his most ambitious films to date.
“Peterloo” recounts the infamous Peterloo Massacre of 1819. The event was one of the bloodiest episodes in British history after government-backed cavalry charged into a peaceful crowd of 80,000 that gathered in Manchester, England to demand democratic reform.
While Leigh is well known for his intimate character dramas, he has also had great critical success with historical period pieces. Films such as “Topsy-Turvy” and “Mr. Turner” have been favorites with critics and multiple Oscar nominees. “Peterloo” finds Leigh reuniting with his “Mr. Turner” cinematographer Dick Pope.

Gary Oldman was considered a likely Oscar front-runner for “Darkest Hour” almost as soon as the first production still was released of him disappearing into the role of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. And the prosthetic makeup that helped him disappear became an Oscar front-runner just as quickly. With Oscar night approaching that hasn’t changed, especially with the film’s victories at the Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTAs and Make Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick are the makeup and hair artists nominated for their work on the docudrama, and they’re the overwhelming favorites to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling with 1/10 odds.

"The Furniture," by Daniel Walber, is devoted to Mike Leigh this week for his 75th birthday. (Click on the images to see them in magnified detail.)
Topsy-Turvy is a subtle, even deceptive film. It moves like a light-hearted showbiz comedy, almost a Victorian Waiting for Guffman. Yet there’s much more going on. Why is it so long, for example? What is Mike Leigh trying to express with so many characters? Why "The Mikado"?
These are questions that can be answered by paying close attention to its production design, the Oscar-nominated work of Eve Stewart and Helen Scott. This is a film about London at the peak of the British Empire, a metropolis gobbling up the riches and the bric-a-brac of the entire world. And the chosen entertainment of its people, eager to take in the sights and sounds of their imperial fantasies, were the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan.

“Darkest Hour” is the overwhelming Oscar front-runner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling thanks in large part to the prosthetics used to transform lead actor Gary Oldman into British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This award has gone to a number of films that recreate historical figures over the years, but the motion picture academy has been especially fond of British icons.
Peter Frampton, Paul Pattison and Lois Burwell won for “Braveheart” (1995), about 13th century Scottish warrior William Wallace. But Wallace was actually fighting to free Scotland from English rule, so perhaps we should leave that one out. But just a few years later Jenny Shircore prevailed for “Elizabeth” (1998), which transformed Cate Blanchett into Queen Elizabeth I during the early years of her reign. And one year after that Christine Blundell and Trefor Proud prevailed for Mike Leigh‘s biopic “Topsy-Turvy” (1999), about the British operatic duo of Gilbert and Sullivan.

I tend to be a fairly conservative Oscar pundit. I don’t go out on many limbs or rely on gut instinct. I try to do the math as objectively as possible based on the most reliable awards season precursors, which is why my predictions accuracy is 100% every year — trust me, no need to fact-check that. But occasionally I will still follow a hunch or two — or five. The following are my top seven biggest hunches that, according to our racetrack odds, I’m completely wrong about.
Woody Harrelson (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Best Supporting Actor — The controversial film has been surging, most recently winning top honors at the SAG Awards. Harrelson didn’t make many appearances on the awards scene for this performance early on, but he got in where it counts: at SAG and the BAFTAs. Those awards are bestowed by the same kinds of industry professionals who voted on the Oscars,...

Nobody stands up for Britons in the lower class trenches like the fierce, opinionated and outright brilliant Mike Leigh; his unusual writing and directing method yields terrific results in his first feature made for TV. And the early performances of Tim Roth, Phil Daniels and Gary Oldman should be the stuff of acting legend, ’80s style.

Mike Leigh is something of an acquired taste, but I have to say that I haven’t forgotten anything of his that I’ve seen. There are of course his ‘special’ period recreations of Topsy-Turvy and Mr. Turner,...

There’s acting and then there’s losing yourself to a role. Timothy Spall came very close to the latter in bringing legendary British painter J.M.W. Turner to the screen for Mike Leigh’s “Mr. Turner.”
The biopic marks Leigh’s first one in 15 years, following 1999’s “Topsy-Turvy,” in which Spall, a Leigh regular, played a supporting role. He’s front and center in “Mr. Turner.” At 57 years-old, the longtime character actor is finally receiving his due for his towering performance that earned him the Best Actor award at Cannes, where the film world premiered to glowing reviews earlier this year.
“The character is supreme” in all of the British filmmaker’s works, Spall told Indiewire. To prepare for the role, Spall did a ton of research that dated back to the painter’s childhood. “The character dictates how it should be played,” Spall said.

Kunal Kapoor who plays a Kalaripayattu(martial art orginated in south India) warrior in Jayaraj’s trilingual period drama, Veeram, set in 13th century Kerala, reveals that it would take him nearly four hours to get ready for the shoot. “Trefor Proud, who has worked on over 50 films and TV shows, including Gladiator, Star Wars: Episode I -The Phantom Menace, The Gospel of John, Ender’s Game and Topsy-Turvy which bagged him an Oscar has designed my look for the film. Four other guys who have specialized in the make up for a Kalari martial artist before he goes out to battle also helped. I’d wake up at 4 am and tune into heavy metal music to do away with sleep as I sat through makeup,” informs Kunal.
He also trained for five months before the shoot, putting on twelve-and-a-half kgs of muscles to look like a warrior...

The actor on her new film, a fairytale for adults, her creepy character in Happy Valley and feeling lost in drama school
Shirley Henderson, 50, has starred in numerous television, film and theatre productions, including Wonderland, Topsy-Turvy, Happy Valley, Southcliffe and Hamish Macbeth. She plays Jude in the Bridget Jones films, and Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter franchise. She studied drama at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and lives in Fife with her partner. Her new film, Tale of Tales, is directed by the Italian Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah, Reality) and also stars Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel and Toby Jones. It’s based on a trio of Neapolitan poet Giambattista Basile’s ancient fantasy morality tales, which predate the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. Henderson plays Imma, an old woman who yearns to be like her sister, Dora, who has been transformed by magic into a beautiful young maiden, who has beguiled the king.
Tale of Tales is Matteo Garrone’s first English-speaking film. How did you find working with him?
Fascinating. Obviously there’s a language barrier, but he knows enough. He doesn’t tell you too much until you begin, then he’s very clear about what he wants. It was an Italian set, and you think everybody’s shouting at you, but they’re not – it’s just a hyped-up atmosphere. He’s very exciting to work with and I’d jump at the chance again.
