Bad Boys Run Away
Hitchcoc4 January 2016
Dudley (Dud) tries to impress his little girlfriend by getting her ice cream. He breaks a little bank and finds nothing. He is caught and spanked by what appears to be his Granny. Ending up in bed without any supper, he wakes up and he and his little dog head off. There are several dream sequences where he punishes those in charge of his life by his absence. He also dreams he finds a chest of gold. As in a Betty Boop cartoon I saw recently, the woods if full of dangerous things, including evil spirits. The conclusion is a little surprise. The animation here is more sophisticated than much I've encountered recently. Some might think that a lot of the trouble is caused by women.

simple but adorable

Warning: Spoilers
This is a very early cartoon and of course it isn't the quality of later toons that have color, sound and a big studio behind them. But, despite it being a pretty simple cartoon, it's a lot of fun to watch and quite charming.

Dud is a little boy out with his sweetie, Mamie. She wants some candy so Dud sneaks home to steal it from his granny's piggy bank. He gets caught and a whipping. Later that night, he and his dog run away. At this point, my favorite part of the cartoon begins, as Dud dreams of all the wonderful things that he thinks will happen. He imagines finding gold and becoming the idol of Mamie and making his granny regret being so mean to him! But, his plans don't last as his imagination kicks in and he's so scared out in the wild that he runs home. The final scene shows him once again getting a lickin'--this time for running away from home.

Despite its child abuse-like theme, this is a cute and engaging film and worth a look.

US Fellers: Dud Leaves Home. (1919)

**** (out of 4)

Wonderful animated short has Dudley wanting to buy a girl an ice cream so he rushes home and breaks his coin break. The only thing this does is cause his mother to spank him and send him to bed without dinner. Later that night he decides to run away where he fantasizes about what his mom is going to do.

I was really surprised at how wonderful this film was and it's really too bad that it doesn't have a better reputation among film buffs. Heck, I doubt very many know about the movie so it's too bad that more people haven't even heard of it. At just five minutes the pacing is wonderful but what makes the film so great is that it's just so charming. I really loved the stuff in the woods as the kid and his dog sit there imagining about how worried and regretful his mom is going to be when she realizes that he ran away. I won't spoil what happens but it's delightful.

There are plenty of nice laughs throughout the short and the Dudley character was a very likable one. I'd also add that the animation was terrific and especially all of the attention to details. Just check out the nighttime scenes where the kid and dog are running back home. Everything just looks wonderful.
