Dunst to leave 'Spider-Man' films?

27 December 2009 2:17 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Actress Kirsten Dunst is to be written out of the Spider-Man movie franchise and replaced as leading lady by Anne Hathaway, according to reports. It is believed that Spider-Man 4 could be the last outing for her character, Mary Jane Watson, who featured as Peter Parker's love interest in the first three films. A source told Star magazine: "The plan is for her character to be written out, probably by dying. Kirsten Dunzo After 'Spider-Man 4'?

25 December 2009 7:03 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Two movies too late, there is talk that Kirsten Dunst may finally be out of the Spider-Man franchise. She'll be back for the fourth movie, after some coaxing by Sam Raimi, but that might be the end of the road for Mary Jane Watson.

Filmicafe is among the many outlets reporting that Mary Jane will be killed off in the next installment and that Anne Hathaway, the rumored pick to portray Black Cat, will become Peter Parker's love interest in the fifth and sith movies. One problem: The rumor comes from a source spilling the beans to Star magazine, which is a bit like finding a cure for cancer from that charlatan who sells cures "they" don't want you to know about on infomercials. »

Will Mj Die In 'Spider-Man 4'?

23 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Not so long ago, readers of "Spider-Man" comics were peeved that Marvel decided to eliminate Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage, through the most asinine of plot developments. But hey, at least the publisher didn’t kill her off.

The movie version of Mary Jane might not be so lucky.

Contact Music is reporting that actress Kirsten Dunst is being written out of the 'Spider-Man' franchise, effective with installment number four, and that Anne Hathaway will be the new love interest. The source of the news is Star magazine, which means the reporting is probably more accurate than the Wall Street Journal’s.

"The plan is for her character to be written out, probably by dying. Anne will take over as Peter Parker's new love interest for this project and for Spider-Man 5 and 6 which are being written now," the source said. "Anne's in L. »

Spider-Man 4: Villains named in poll, rumour says Kirsten Dunst written out

23 December 2009 4:42 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

In recent months there has been endless speculation about Spider-Man 4 - with the choice of villains at the centre of the web.

The rumours include claims that production is on hold because Sam Raimi and studio executives are fighting over which baddies will be in the script.

Whether that's true or not, here on The Geek Files I held a poll on which villains fans would like to see. Every time I was about to remove the poll, another piece of Spider-speculation would arise, so it ended up staying on longer than normal.

There were more than 6,000 results on the poll, making it a strong barometer of fans' views, with 27 per cent wanting to see the Lizard going up against the webslinger in the next film and 14 per cent wanting Black Cat.

Mysterio took 10 per cent of the vote, Scorpion and Electro each racked up 8 per cent and Kraven »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

'Avatar' Reactions, Olivia From 'Sesame Street,' And Bill Willingham's Birthday In Today's Twitter Report

23 December 2009 10:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Avatar" may be the most hilariously divisive movie of the holiday season, if not 2009. In the last 24 hours, for instance, G. Willow Wilson has been excited about seeing it, Laurenn McCubbin has been thoroughly dissatisfied with it and Mike Choi has come to the movie's defense with some serious words for its critics.

In other tweets, Dennis Calero spoke up for everyone who grew up with "Sesame Street" actress Alaina Reed Amini. The actress who played Olivia on the show passed away last week. Check out those messages after the jump along with Brian Michael Bendis' shock over "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," Bill Willingham's birthday announcement (which we congratulate him on!) and Jimmy Palmiotti's thoughts on "Brothers."

They're all in the Twitter Report for December 23, 2009.

The Best of the Decade: 2000-2009

23 December 2009 9:56 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A best of the decade list is an incredible thing to consider. The Aughts were ripe with imagination and originality. The past ten years also came jam packed with many new visionary directors that changed the cinematic landscape forever. Yet, at the same time, it was also a decade wrought with remakes, rip-offs, ten-year late sequels, and films based on preexisting toy properties, comic books, and amusement park rides. George Lucas offended almost everyone by dusting off his Star Wars mythos and adding copious amounts of CGI to it. And Batman, a caped figure in tights who last flourished in the trippy sixties, managed to crawl head and shoulders above the rest at the box office to be crowned king. Thus proving that the so-called "geek" or "fanboy" truly ruled the silver screen over the course of this tumultuous past decade. Today, we look at the ten films that ruled »

Anne Hathaway Is Not Spider-Man's New Love Interest

22 December 2009 7:45 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Spider-Man will not be seen hooking up with a new girl in the next film. Despite report that Anne Hathaway has been tapped to replace Kirsten Dunst in "Spider-Man 4" as the franchise's leading lady, her representative has told Gossip Cop that the news is not true, saying "It's not accurate - there is no deal in place for her to be in ['Spider-Man 4']." Moreover, the site claimed there won't be any negotiations with Hathaway because the film's script has not been completed.

Words that Hathaway will be the new Spider-Man's love interest were first outed by Star Magazine. According to some sites, the publication reported that Dunst, who has signed to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson, will be written out in the fourth film.

The magazine further claimed a source told them Dunst's character would probably be killed off in the upcoming "Spider-Man" film. "Anne will take »

Geek Gossip: Hawkman, Green Lantern's Carol Ferris, Spider-Man 4, James Bond

22 December 2009 2:25 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Today's round-up has a distinct superhero (and action hero) motif.

Where there are upcoming films, there is gossip and speculation and the hero genre is no exception.

Sadly, so much turns out to be fiction and fabrication so I am warning readers now to switch on their bulls**t detector and set it to maximum as we head deep into Rumourville.

Only the other day, I brought you the 'story' about Taylor Swift (the singer whose awards acceptance speech was disrupted by Kanye West storming on stage) being a top choice to star in a new Supergirl movie.

The project was allegedly called Supergirl! The Love Story. This rumour originated on Hollyscoop, the site that previously scooped poop when it told us Miley Cyrus was going to be cast as Batgirl. Is the needle on your bulls**t detector twitching yet? It should be.

Okay, so on to today's gossip. »

No 'Venom' For Topher Grace

21 December 2009 9:21 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

More proof the proposed Venom solo film will have little tie-in to Spider-Man 3: The next time around, a different actor may be cast to wear the black alien symbiote costume.

Recently, actor Topher Grace, who played Venom and his alter-ego Eddie Brock in the last Spidey-sequel, told MTV that he’d had no discussions with Sony about the film. "I don't know. I haven't heard anything," Grace said.

The Venom producers appear to be re-building the character from ground zero. Earlier this year, it was reported that Zombieland scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese had been hired to write the Marvel Comics antihero as a defender of the innocent, albeit one with less compunctions about brute force and hurting people. Meanwhile, Spider-Man helmer Sam Raimi seems to be having little to do with Venom, with Gary Ross rumored to be writing and directing instead.

Ross, however, was recently »

10 Secrets to Spot in 'New Moon'

21 December 2009 7:33 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There's always something to spot in the movies beyond the basic plot -- one little thing or a horde slipped in covertly to please the die-hard fans and watchful eyes. Sometimes it's so obvious it can't be missed, like Bruce Campbell's cameos in Spider-Man and Raimi's car, and sometimes it's so subtle there is no chance in hell to ever know -- like the period-authentic papers littering the jail in Watchmen. Now there's New Moon. The film has been out for a while (still holding the #5 spot), and now director Chris Weitz has shared with EW some of the little things he slipped into the second installment of The Twilight Saga.

Some are little basic things, like the hints of wolves showing up on everything from shirts to bowls, or the appropriateness of playing Strauss' "Die Fledermaus" in the Volturi's elevator. Others are a little funkier. Weitz threw in »

1. There’s girl-on-girl snogging between Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as bisexual rock stars in The Runaways. That’s why it’s R-rated. 2. Spider-Man 4 is in turmoil. Laura Ziskin is not actively producing the fourth Spider-Man installment (tentatively titled Spider-M4n), and Todd Black (The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Knowing) has his hands full as the many cooks at Sony and Marvel try to finalize the shooting script. This time, director Sam Raimi wants to get his way on story and villains; last time around he thought he gave in too much to studio demands on action figures and the like, to the film’s detriment. … »

No Venom in Topher Grace's Future

21 December 2009 3:00 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It was revealed in October that plans for a Venom movie spinning off of the Marvel Comics villain featured in Spider-Man 3 were moving forward, with Spider-Man 4 screenwriter Gary Ross doing rewrites and possibly directing the picture. Apparently, the spin-off will not involve the only actor to ever portray the popular comic book villain on the big screen, Topher Grace.

In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Grace seemed unsure of how to answer questions about the Venom movie. When asked if he was interested in returning to the role (even though his character apparently died at the end of Spider-Man 3), Grace said, "You know, I guess." He went on to say that he hadn't "heard anything" from Sony about the project. When asked to clarify whether or not he had any current plans to appear in a Venom spin-off, Grace conceded, "No, I don't think so."

The $73 million, blizzard-affected box office haul of "Avatar" has confirmed what we've long expected: James Cameron will get a chance to make a sequel to his alien-love-story-meets-kick-ass action flick. But it won't be the next film he takes on. What will? In numerous conversations, the director walked us through the projects he's contemplating with an eye toward what might be his next big-screen effort.

"Battle Angel Alita"

Cameron almost moved forward on this adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's popular manga instead of "Avatar," but ultimately chose to go with his big blue aliens — turns out that the "Avatar" practice could pay big "Battle Angel" dividends.

"Now we see it's good to have done 'Avatar' first before 'Battle Angel,' because the tricky scenes are where you're blending live-action photography, »

James Franco ended "Saturday Night Live" 2009 run on a high note when he appeared as the host on Saturday, December 19. The "Spider-Man" actor brought out the laughter with sketches and digital shorts in which he participated in a Mexican talk show, kissed a man in lips, and wore pajamas while dancing.

In his opening monologue, Franco said to the audience that it was his second time hosting the show. He also talked about his latest stint, "General Hospital", which many thought is a set back. Revealing that he makes career choice based on random suggestions, he brought out the rolling machine and started taking out the papers. Among the suggestions was "playing dead body in 'Law & Order'."
