Black Public Media awarded a total of $610,000 to film and immersive projects and creatives at its seventh PitchBLACK Forum — the largest pitch competition for independent filmmakers and creative technologists developing new projects about the global Black experience — at the PitchBLACK Awards.
The figure was the highest ever amount awarded at PitchBLACK. Sponsored by Netflix and PBS, the event — held Thursday at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse at Lincoln Center — was hosted by Baltimore-based comedian Sir Alex and included the presentation of the Bpm Trailblazer Award to Emmy-winning filmmaker Sam Pollard.
The winner of the $150,000 film award was Zenón, a documentary about the life of Puerto Rican fisherman and revolutionary Carlos “Taso” Zenón, who spearheaded protests against the U.S. Navy’s occupation, exploitation and environmental degradation of his home, the island of Vieques. I find it ironic how despite existing on a planet where pretty much every living thing originated in the ocean, one of humanity’s most widespread fears is thalassophobia – the fear of the deep ocean. Whether it’s some form of genetic memory that continues to haunt our species or a natural reaction to witnessing one of the deadliest ecosystems in the world, it’s no surprise storytellers have been taking advantage of this fear for millennia.
And while Jaws obviously dominates the conversation when it comes to underwater horror in film, there are still some intrepid filmmakers that dare to explore other kinds of sea-borne thrills. For example, Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin’s upcoming Deep Water looks like it’s going to take us on another roller-coaster ride directly into shark-infested waters. However, since there’s still no official release date, we’ve decided to come up...

Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo talks to us about his latest film, Damsel, designing an intimidating dragon, and Millie Bobby Brown facing her fears…
The subject of fear comes up in varying forms during our lively chat with Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. There’s the fear induced by the glowering dragon that lies at the heart of his latest film, Damsel, which will stream on Netflix from the 8th March.
There’s the fear experienced by rising star Millie Bobby Brown, who was forced to confront her own claustrophobia when making Damsel; the film’s centre-piece is a lengthy fight for survival in a network of caves inhabited by that fearsome dragon, designed by the legendary Patrick Tatopoulos (those cool bat-type aliens in Pitch Black? Those were his).
Then there’s the fear Fresnadillo felt while making horror sequel 28 Weeks Later in 2007 – the process of editing it, he tells us,...

If there’s one positive thing even the many people he’s had feuds with might say about Vin Diesel, it’s that when he latches onto a character or concept, he doesn’t let them go. He may have skipped the first sequel to The Fast and the Furious, but once he did return to the role of Dominic Toretto, he made sure the sequels kept reaching theatres at a fast and furious pace. Few movie-goers seem to care about the Richard B. Riddick character beyond Pitch Black, but that hasn’t stopped Diesel from continuing to push sequels forward – and apparently Riddick 4 isn’t far off from production. Then there’s his 2015 fantasy/action film The Last Witch Hunter, which didn’t gain a lot of fans (although JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy dug it). Diesel liked it, so we might just get a The Last Witch Hunter...

The Fast and Furious franchise has featured some pretty big stars since the early days of the street racing crew stealing TV/Vcr combos. Check out the later entries and you’ll see Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, and plenty of others. But one action favorite who won’t be getting behind the wheel is Jean-Claude Van Damme, who claims that he hit a big, bad, bald roadblock when approached about joining the Fast and Furious franchise.
In a profile by The Telegraph, Jean-Claude Van Damme claimed that he could have once been a part of the insanity of this series if for Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious franchise. “They want me in Fast and Furious… But Vin Diesel said, ‘No, I don’t want him.’” Shot down by the dude from Pitch Black and The Pacifier! Vin Diesel's Riddick movies are an unusual franchise, driven by Diesel's love for the character and a desire to explore his world with series director David Twohy. Each entry is wildly different from the others, spanning different genres and even mediums, with a short detour into animation for "Riddick: Dark Fury." Riddick himself is a fun sci-fi creation, the last surviving member of an alien warrior race called Furyans, with reflective eyes that see in the dark. But where should newcomers to the franchise start, and what order should they watch the "Riddick" flicks in?
Thankfully the answer is fairly simple, dear reader, though which entries work best might vary from viewer to viewer. "Pitch Black" seems to be fairly universally beloved, but the other "Riddick" entries received more mixed receptions yet have their own cult followings. The movies are possible to enjoy on their own but might be a little confusing,...

The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.
But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) was a flawed yet powerful expansion of a Brian Aldiss story while his War of the Worlds (2005) and Minority Report (2002) were outstanding takes on classic tales from H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick (there might have been no sci-fi filmmaker more consistent at the time than The Beard). Other remakes or adaptations,...

It's safe to say that Vin Diesel is an actor who has made the most out of every single opportunity given to him. From voicing Groot in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise -- a role that requires him to say just three words over and over again most of the time (and in multiple languages) -- to leading the "Fast & Furious" series as Dom Toretto, Diesel has generated more than $14 billion at the box office through the movies he's starred in. Yet, it is a modest, mid-budget hit from a decade ago that remains arguably the most fascinating thing he's ever done. With 2013's "Riddick," Diesel used every tool at his disposal to bring a passion project to fruition.

Space: the final frontier. But instead of seeking out new life and new civilizations, the protagonists in these films are often trying to escape them. The vast, cold void of space is the perfect setting for horror. The isolation, the unknown, the realization that in space, no one can hear you scream. From derelict spaceships to alien planets, the cosmos offers a backdrop where our deepest fears can manifest far from the safety of Earth.
So, buckle up, space cadets, as we journey through the darkest corners of the universe with these ten spine-chilling space horror movies.
Screen Gems 10. Ghost of Mars (2001)
John Carpenter takes us to a Martian colony where miners unwittingly release ancient, malevolent spirits. Oops! As these spirits possess the miners, turning them into murderous zombies, a police officer (played by Natasha Henstridge) and a criminal (Ice Cube), and a whole motley crew must team up to survive.

Vin Diesel is a man of many franchises, some of which he himself has spearheaded. Alongside the hugely popular Fast & Furious, those franchises include the Pitch Black and XxX film series, the latter of which began his action star career. The initial 2002 film saw Xander Cage (Diesel) as an extreme sports enthusiast and rebellious stuntman working as a superspy for the National Security Agency, which tasked him to infiltrate a terrorist organization. The third film in the trilogy came in 2017’s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, which saw Diesel return to the enter stage following the unsuccessful 2005 sequel starring Ice Cube. The Return of Xander Cage made over $346 million worldwide off a $85 million budget. Although a fourth film was announced by Diesel and director D.J. Caruso with The H Collective and Diesel’s own One Race Films production company, there’s currently a lawsuit preventing the movie from going forward.

Directed by Rob Savage and written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, this film takes audiences on a chilling journey that explores the depths of fear and the resilience of the human spirit.
The Boogeyman follows troubled high school student Sadie Harper, and her precocious younger sister, Sawyer, still grappling with the recent loss of their mother. Their father, Will, a therapist dealing with his own intense pain, provides little comfort and closes himself off to the girls emotionally. Little do they know that their lives are about to take a sinister turn when a desperate patient seeking help unwittingly unleashes a terrifying supernatural entity that just so happens to prey on families and feed on their suffering. Talk about unlucky.

Fast X may not be the penultimate entry in the Fast and Furious franchise after all. During a red carpet interview at the film’s world premiere in Rome, Vin Diesel appeared to confirm that Universal Pictures is considering a 12th movie.
When the face of the franchise was asked about its future, Diesel initially said he wanted to avoid “tipping the hat too much” before teasing the three-act finale. “Going into making this movie, the studio asked if this could be a two-parter,” Diesel said. “And after the studio saw this Part One, they said, ‘Could you make Fast X, the finale, a trilogy?’”
“It’s three acts in any story,” co-star Michelle Rodriguez added. Host Naz Perez followed up by asking if they were “confirming right now that we’re getting a third movie,” but the actors scurried away after Diesel quipped, “You’re gonna get me in trouble here.

Vin Diesel has two movies coming out this month. He has provided the voice of Groot for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (read our review Here), and he’s back in the role of Dominic Toretto for Fast X. But while he’s attending events and doing press to promote those projects, he’s also looking forward to getting to work with writer/director David Twohy on Riddick: Furya, the fourth film in their Riddick franchise. If you are artistically inclined, here’s a challenge for you. Design the dining area of a spaceship for a working class, blue-collar crew but, and here’s the catch, it can look nothing like the dining area of the commercial towing vehicle Uscss Nostromo. Let us know how many drafts you get through.
It is a look that is so ubiquitous in spaceship design that we barely even register it anymore, and yet it is also completely distinctive. Whereas before Ridley Scott‘s Alien we had seen spaceships as naval ships, wagon trains, and disheveled Vw camper vans, with the Nostromo we were introduced to the spaceship as a long-distance truck, as an ocean tanker, and as an oil rig. And like the titular alien star-beast, once it got through the airlock there was no getting rid of it. Here are some of the best stories to be inspired by,...

When "Alien 3" was released in 1992, it was roundly bashed by critics, met with uproar by fans, and later disowned by its director, David Fincher. Despite this, the troubled production and intrigue around Fincher's original vision have made it a constant source of fascination for "Alien" aficionados. One of the many subplots was the input of David Twohy, one of several writers involved in the film and whose biggest contribution was the setting of a prison planet populated by shaven-headed criminals.
Things didn't work out for Twohy on "Alien 3," but he got a chance to revisit that idea when he was offered the chance to rework and direct a screenplay that bore similarities to the "Alien" movies. Its most interesting character would become a vicious criminal named Richard B. Riddick, recaptured after busting out from a maximum security prison, perhaps not unlike the one in the much-maligned third...

Last month, it was announced that Vin Diesel and writer/director David Twohy are about ready to get rolling on Riddick: Furya, the fourth film in the Riddick franchise and a project that Diesel has been regularly mentioning pretty much ever since the third movie was released ten years ago, doing his best to keep the Riddick hype alive. His efforts must be working, because shortly after last month’s announcement all three of the previous Riddick movies cracked the Netflix top 10 in the United States. Pop Culture reported that, at one point, the Riddick movies were ranking in the top 10 in reverse order: “Riddick stands at number four, Chronicles of Riddick at number seven and Pitch Black at number nine.” So Diesel took to Instagram to celebrate the Netflix success of the films while mentioning that he’s working to get Riddick 4 into production.

Pitch Black (2000) began the live-action films in the Riddick franchise and was followed by its sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick (2004). When Pitch Black was released on February 18, 2000, few predicted it would become one of Vin Diesel’s most successful franchises. With a modest budget of $23 million, Pitch Black became a sleeper hit, eventually earning $53.2 million at the Box Office. Although it received mixed reviews from critics, most audience reviews were positive. The commercial success of Pitch Black spurned the sequel, set five years after the events of the first movie. However, the time jump left...

Alert! Contains spoilers for new viewers of The Riddick movies. The Riddick franchise currently consists of three live-action movies, Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013). In what began as a moderate-budget science fiction space Western movie, the Riddick franchise became one of Vin Diesel’s most successful film franchises. So far, all of the franchise’s movies have centered around the adventures of its anti-hero, Riddick (Vin Diesel). The first movie, Pitch Black, was written by David Twohy and the Wheat Brothers. With the relative success of Pitch Black, two sequels were developed. However, only Twohy developed,...

The confirmation that Riddick 4: Furya is in active development is exciting news for fans of the Chronicles Of Riddick franchise. The follow-up to Riddick, The Chronicles Of Riddick, and Pitch Black has long been anticipated. Despite the long wait though, plenty of people are still anticipating where the story of the roguish antihero may lead next. The Chronicles Of Riddick franchise has always been a compelling fusion of ideas. It’s a blend of the space western vibe of Firefly and the space horror aesthetics of Alien, placed in the midst of the epic scale of Star Wars. Richard B....

This week in home viewing, the whale topped a bear. “Cocaine Bear” ($19.99) came out on PVOD after its third weekend — standard timing for Universal. Since it was still strong in theaters, home availability would usually guarantee across-the-board #1 rankings at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu.
But surprise — A24 lowered the price of “The Whale” to $4.99 just before Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor win. The film soared to the top at iTunes and Google Play right after the Oscars.
Both sites rank by transaction, which benefits any lower-cost rental. However, Darren Aronofsky’s film is also #2 at Vudu, which counts by revenue. (Vudu has “Cocaine Bear” at #1).
Meantime, Oscar juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once” — available on streaming as well as theaters — stayed strong at $19.99. That price may have discouraged some buyers, but it still placed fourth or fifth on all charts.
“A Man Called Otto” (Sony), with its price reduced to $5.99, continued its strong chart showing.

In the 2000 film "Pitch Black," star Vin Diesel plays a convict being transported to a prison on a spaceship when it's damaged and lands on a desert planet. Though it looks deserted and continually bathed in light, there are dangerous creatures there that come out only in the dark. That would be fine ... if an eclipse wasn't happening. The crew and passengers, including an Imam and his followers, a person looking for a new home, a bounty hunter, and an antique dealer, now have to fight off these creatures, and not everyone survives.
The film was a sleeper hit, making $53 million worldwide on a $23 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. The film spawned two sequels, "The Chronicles of Riddick" in 2004 and "Riddick" in 2013. Both films also starred Diesel, with David Twohy directing all three. Officially announced just a couple weeks back, Vin Diesel will return in Riddick: Furya, the upcoming fourth installment in the Riddick franchise that’s being directed by David Twohy.
In the new film, Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins by the Necromongers.
But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new enemy. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.
David Twohy‘s 2000 film Pitch Black was our introduction to Vin Diesel as an action star, and the actor of course went on reprise the role of monster-killer Richard B. Riddick in 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick and most recently, 2013’s Riddick. All three films are coming to Netflix in March 2023, we’ve learned this week, just in time for the fourth movie’s announcement.

Vin Diesel's career has grown exponentially since he first played the goggle-wearing badass, Richard B. Riddick, in the 2000 sci-fi film, "Pitch Black." That movie, along with the two other "Riddick" features after it, was written and directed by David Twohy. The first film, however, was much smaller in scale than its predecessor, 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick." "Pitch Black" had a 23 million budget and focused on a small group of survivors trying not to get eaten by dark-loving creatures inhabiting the planet they crash landed on. "Chronicles," by comparison, had a whopping 105 million budget and was an sci-fi extravaganza full of planet-wide battles, a lot of CGI, and had Diesel coming to the aid of Judi Dench and her people who are being invaded by a cult-like empire called the Necromongers. The sequel barely made more than it cost worldwide, making it a definitive failure.

We all know Vin Diesel loves "da movies". We also know he's a fan of franchises. But before he got behind the wheel of the Fast & Furious films or into the voice booth for Guardians' Groot, he was Richard B. Riddick in 2000's breakout sci-fi hit Pitch Black more than 20 years (and two sequels) later, he's returning to the role for Riddick: Furya.
David Twohy, who co-wrote and directed Pitch Black and oversaw lesser 2004 sequel The Chronicles Of Riddick and return to stripped-back creature-feature roots Riddick in 2013, is once more pulling double duty, with Diesel set to star once more as the night vision-enhanced tough nut Riddick.
Following years of teases on particularly Diesel's social media, Riddick: Furya is coming together, its rights out for sale. There's no mention of regular distributor Universal, but a chance the studio will be involved down the line.

"Pitch Black" remains a banger. It's very early-2000s, for sure, but it's also peak Vin Diesel being a monster-killing badass. If you need a refresher, "Pitch Black" is a survival sci-fi horror movie about a transport that crashes on an alien planet where the survivors encounter deadly creatures that kill when the sun goes down. Among the ragtag group is a dangerous convict being transported by his cruel handler and so much of the movie rests on the mystery of this guy who wears goggles all the dang time.
Riddick was a perfect character for Vin Diesel, whose low, gravelly voice could really sound menacing and playful and it allowed him to fully embrace an anti-hero. Riddick is very much in the Snake Plissken mold. He's always looking out for himself, but he has a heart and can't be a complete bastard when people need him.
