Science fiction was one of the first genres in the history of cinema, and it has undergone the most dramatic changes in its more than one hundred years of existence.
By making the leap from literature to film in the 1900s, sci-fi was able to greatly expand its reach. What began as a flight of fancy on paper blossomed in front of the camera, and the genre began to explore new, exciting subgenres on the screen. Dozens of popular novels were adapted and given visual substance.
But it wasn't just adaptations that pushed directors to new horizons – many of their stories reflected everyday life through a futuristic prism. Films like Planet of the Apes and Blade Runner influenced the development of science fiction as a genre with its own tropes, traits, and cinematic language.

When it comes to the most influential sci-fi releases that popularised space operas, Star Wars is often the obvious pick, which broke industry records upon debuting back in 1977. Others would argue it’s Frank Herbert’s Dune, which hit the shelves back in 1965 and ended up revolutionizing the sci-fi landscape, serving as an inspiration for George Lucas’ Star Wars.
But while Dune was indeed a monumental success, it was Charlton Heston’s Planet of the Apes that laid the foundation for space operas on the silver screen.

Filmmaker Tim Burton is known for his gothic aesthetics and choosing to tell stories of weird characters. The filmmaker has put his stamp on blockbusters such as Batman as well as more personal stories such as Big Fish. He will be returning to one of his most beloved franchises with the Michael Keaton starrer Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
One movie in his filmography that stands out from the rest is his 2001 revival of Planet of the Apes. The project served as a remake of the 1968 classic sci-fi film, and starred Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter, and more. The film was not received well upon release and is often considered to be a subpar remake of the original. Actor Paul Giamatti, who played Limbo, spoke about his experience while shooting the film.

Andy Serkis is regarded as a legend for motion capture roles with prominent performances in some of the most renowned projects. The actor did motion capture for iconic characters like Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, the titular ape in King Kong, and the fan-favorite intelligent ape leader Caesar in the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy.

It looks like Russell Crowe cannot leave behind the horror and mystery genres so soon. According to an official update from The Pope’s Exorcist’s producer, Jeff Katz, the 2023 film will receive a sequel soon. The horror film was a sleeper hit at the box office and, despite not being perfect, was liked by many.
Russell Crowe in The Pope’s Exorcist
The Pope’s Exorcist mostly earned mixed reviews from critics. However, it seems like the makers want to mimic the first film’s unexpected success. Earlier this year, Russell Crowe discussed the possibility of numerous follow-ups to the Julius Avery directorial. Jeff Katz has now confirmed that the universe will expand and follow the blueprint of the Planet of the Apes franchise for its title.

The latest instalment in the relaunched Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, arrives in theatres exactly ten days from now, and 20th Century Studios has released quite a bit of new promotional material, including an action-packed final trailer spotlighting plenty of new footage.
The teaser tells us a little more about new lead ape, Noa, and reveals why he has a vendetta against the tyrannical Proximo Caesar. We also hear Mae speak, and it seems the human girl is fully aware that the world once belonged to her people before the ape uprising.
Does this mean Kotpota will bring events full circle? It's possible, but we might see at least one more movie before things begin to link up to the original Planet of the Apes.
Check out the new trailer, along with a poster and two featurettes, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

At the turn of the millennium, humanity was brought face-to-face with the world of the apes, beginning with the Planet of the Apes. The Mark Wahlberg starrer created waves back in 2001, laying down the foundation for a franchise that would never turn back. Even more than two decades down the lane, fans still continue to love the story. And a big testament to this is the hype around the upcoming entry in the series, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. There will be one notable absence though – the absence of Andy Serkis.

You just can't keep those damn dirty apes down. 10 years after Tim Burton's 2001 "Planet of the Apes" re-imagining failed to reignite audiences' passion for stories about intellectually-enhanced simians, the long-running sci-fi franchise made an unexpectedly strong comeback with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Director Rupert Wyatt's entry in the series is now generally considered the weakest of the modern "Apes" trilogy, which is more of a testament to what Matt Reeves was able to accomplish with his subsequent sequels than necessarily a knock against Wyatt's film. "Rise" itself makes for an effective cautionary tale about humanity's hubris, our lack of compassion toward other living beings, and our habit of being our own worst enemy, as seen through the eyes of its co-protagonist, Caesar (Andy Serkis in his touchstone motion-capture role).
Yes, it's easy to forget that Caesar wasn't originally the singular lead of his own story.

True lightning-in-a-bottle phenomena are immensely difficult to recapture. 60 years after "The Twilight Zone" completed its initial run in 1964, subsequent attempts to resuscitate the property -- either with an anthology film or reboot series -- have failed to match its cultural impact, even with vaunted directors Steven Spielberg, George Miller, Wes Craven, William Friedkin, Jonathan Frakes, Ana Lily Amirpour, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, and Osgood Perkins lending their talents behind the camera. It's a testament to everything the late Rod Serling accomplished with his surreal amalgamation of genre storytelling and social commentary that we tend to overlook his many other significant contributions as an artist (which include co-penning the 1968 "Planet of the Apes" movie).
When the original "Twilight Zone" ended, however, its legacy seemed far from assured. Serling had burnt himself out after writing so many episodes for the series, with the consensus being that the show's final two seasons were...

This article contains possible spoilers for Dune: Part Three and Dune Messiah.
When Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part One opened in 2021, it only took Warner Bros. six days to announce the sequel. However, when Dune: Part Two opened this past March 1—despite doing huge business and clearly paving the way for a third chapter—it took the studio over a month to confirm a film of Dune Messiah was in development. Why the delay? Well, lots of possible reasons, actually.
Even though Dune: Part Two is likely to soon cross the $700 million mark at the global box office, it was an expensive movie to make at a reported $190 million ($25 million more than Part One), plus a marketing budget that likely took that final price tag well over the $300 million mark. Once you factor in that half the box office is going to theaters, you have a low margin for profitability,...

The Walt Disney Company is facing yet another stock drop. In the last two weeks, Disney’s stock went from $122.82 to $113.87 at the time of this article, a drop of about $9. What is going on?
The stock initially increased in early April ahead of the Annual Shareholder Meeting when everyone was waiting to see if activist investors like Nelson Peltz would gain a seat on the Walt Disney board. When the media began reporting that the current board would likely remain, the stock prices began to fall. When voting was concluded, and the status quo remained, the stocks started dropping again.
Before the shareholders meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger made several announcements at the Q2 2024 earnings call in February. Announcements like a “Moana” television show being reworked into a second film, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour streaming on Disney+, and a deal with Epic Games for a partnership with Fortnite.

Paul Giamatti is set to join Stephen Colbert for an evening of conversation as part of the second annual North to Shore Festival in New Jersey this June.
The event, set for June 29 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, will raise money for Montclair Film, the New Jersey based arts organization with which Colbert has long been involved, which runs the Montclair Film Festival.
Onstage, the Late Show host and Holdovers star will discuss Giamatti’s long-running screen career. The official rating of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was released, and it's no surprise.
20th Century Studios is bringing back the Planet of the Apes franchise. The story will continue the previous trilogy but take place nearly 300 years after the events of 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes.
This next installment, directed by Wes Ball, stars Owen Teague as the lead character, Noa, and Freya Allan as Mae, the main human character.

I love the Planet of the Apes franchise. Everything from the original 1968 movie to the short-lived TV series to the excellent Apes trilogy starring Andy Serkis; hell, I’ve even got a soft spot for Tim Burton’s reboot. The next installment of the franchise is just over the horizon, and the audience at CinemaCon got to witness an exclusive sneak peek of thirteen minutes of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I am officially jealous.
The footage starts in an ape community in the jungle and follows young Noa (Owen Teague) as he and his friends steal some eggs from an eagle’s nest. There are three eggs, but they leave one behind, as that’s the law. They hope to raise the young eagles themselves, but unfortunately, they’re caught in the act by the momma eagle, and Noa is nearly knocked off a cliff. We then...

"Planet of the Apes" has consistently been a science-fiction franchise (and one of the best we have), but the movies come in different sci-fi flavors. The original was a time travel story (even if Charlton Heston's lead George Taylor took the long way around via cryogenesis), culminating in the shocking ending right out of "The Twilight Zone" where Taylor discovers the shattered Statue of Liberty and realizes this ape-ruled world was Earth all along.
The third movie, "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," saw the talking apes travel back to the 1970s when humans reigned. Subsequent films filled in the timeline, depicting the uprising that led to the planet of the apes. The new films (the so-called Caesar trilogy) have done the reverse, starting at the beginning and taking the route of contemporary speculative fiction. Things have only come full circle with the fourth film, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,...

When The Walt Disney Company first acquired 20th Century Studios, fans had a field day joking about the characters in their library that were now under the Disney banner. Ripley from "Alien," Tyler Durden from "Fight Club," the titular "Predator," and all of the "Planet of the Apes" characters were now residents at the House of Mouse. Suddenly, viral memes declaring Dr. Frank-n-Furter from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" as a technical Disney Princess were inescapable. Ignoring the blatant inaccuracy of that statement, it does serve as a reminder that Disney is and will likely forever be synonymous with family-friendly fare.
When Steve Asbell took over as president of 20th Century Studios, he spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and assured everyone that despite being a part of Disney, this branch would be closer to "general entertainment," saying, "Some films will be more Disney-adjacent — 'Avatar,...

Samar Akrouk has been appointed managing director of Saudi production powerhouse Mbc Studios, replacing U.S. producer Christina Wayne, who recently quietly exited the top post at the production arm of top Middle East broadcaster Mbc Group.
Akrouk, who has been with Mbc for almost 30 years, is currently the group’s director of production. She will retain that role while expanding her purview from mainly non-scripted productions for the Mbc TV channels and its Shahid streamer to also comprise oversight of Mbc’s high-end drama and film productions in Saudi Arabia, which are part of an ongoing effort to help kickstart the kingdom’s nascent industry.
“She will be managing the entity’s mission to leverage the ongoing trend for non-English-language television content to reach more global markets,” a statement from Mbc reads.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is just over a month away, and it looks like Wes Ball’s addition to the franchise is stacking up to be a significant hit. The last three Planet of the Apes movies did a good job reinventing the franchise for the 21st century, with the last two instalments, directed by Matt Reeves, especially acclaimed. While the Caesar trilogy has come to an end, the new film is set to follow the same continuity, only taking place generations later. In many ways, Kingdom seems more in line with the original series, with talking apes, led by Owen Teague’s Noa, at war with a primitive human society.
According to Deadline, the film is tracking for a $54-61 million dollar opening, which would put it on track with the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $56 million. It’ll...

Technically speaking, the Year of the Monkey is still four years away, but 2024 apparently failed to get the memo. "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" got the party started by beating all early estimates and overperforming at the box office. Meanwhile, actor/director Dev Patel is doing everything in his power to turn himself into our next action star with the upcoming "Monkey Man," which is similarly poised to provide a much-needed boost among moviegoers for original movies. But as exciting as these offerings are, both of them might as well be the hors d'oeuvres and appetizers preceding the main course: "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
The longstanding sci-fi franchise continues to prove the wisdom of its central "Apes together strong" maxim, reignited by the recent trilogy of acclaimed movies begun by 2011's prequel/reboot "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." After Matt Reeves took over the...

Shakira shared her belated Barbie take in a new interview with Allure, saying she agreed “to a certain extent” with her two sons, who found the movie “emasculating.”
The musician was asked about Greta Gerwig’s hit film during a discussion about women’s empowerment and her hope that her upcoming album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women No Longer Cry) would “help women discover their own strengths.” While that’s arguably kind of the whole point of Barbie, Shakira said her sons “absolutely hated the movie,” adding, “They felt that it was emasculating.

On April 5, Roddenberry Entertainment, the company behind the “Star Trek” universe, launches a brand new sci-fi podcast called “Does It Fly?” that answers one of the biggest questions sci-fi geeks love to ponder: Could the technology we love in out-there science fiction franchises someday exist in real life?
We’re talking about the “Star Trek” transporter, the subject of the first episode, as well as the lightsabers in “Star Wars,” the replicants in “Blade Runner,” Iron Man’s Arc Reactor, the Tardis from “Doctor Who,” and the technological and philosophical questions raised in the “Black Mirror” episode “San Junipero” — all will be episode topics in the future on the podcast, which will be hosted by astrophysicist and science communicator Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and pop-culture aficionado Tamara Krinsky.

The Planet of the Apes reboot franchise has been one of the most successful reboots in history, with the new trilogy becoming a critical and commercial success. Led by Andy Serkis, the trilogy was built on a long tradition of similar films, managing to bring a lot of new elements, as well as keeping true to the idea of the original story. And while the trilogy ended, the reboot franchise is not dead, as a new sequel trilogy is planned, starting with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is set to be released on May 10, 2024, with early access screenings available starting with May 8, 2024.

As a brief prologue, we must remind ourselves how Rotten Tomatoes works. When a critic submits a written review to the Rt aggregate, they are asked to deem that review either "fresh" or "rotten." The critic typically gets to make the distinction, meaning a 2.5-star review can be either positive or negative, based on who is submitting it. It's based on pass/fail grades. Rotten Tomatoes will then create a percentage of "positive" reviews. If 60% or more of the submitted reviews are positive, the film is deemed "fresh." If 59% or fewer are positive, it's "rotten."
If a film has, say, a 73% approval rating, it doesn't mean that every critic gave it a 73 out of 100. It only means that 73% of the submitted reviews are positive.
All that said, some films receive such low approval ratings that one might be able to draw some logical conclusions about the film being rated. A...

This article contains spoilers for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire."
After a stellar TV run with "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," which finally gave us a good human story within the "Godzilla" mythos, and an unprecedented Oscar victory for "Godzilla Minus One," Godzilla has returned to the big screen with another team-up between Godzilla and King Kong.
Part of what makes "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" interesting and unique among the MonsterVerse movies is its team-up of villains, Shimo and Skar King. They essentially serve as reflections of Godzilla and Kong, the former being a lizard-like kaiju with an energy beam, and the latter being a giant ape.
Though Shimo is barely even a character, Skar King is a fantastic addition to the MonsterVerse — a violent and evil despot like Koba in "Planet of the Apes," with a badass kaiju spine he uses as a chain-weapon and as a way to control Shimo.

There is a twist with the latest offering from the now-decade-old Monsterverse, a franchise that has featured Kong and Godzilla in their own movies and then in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong battling each other to the death. (These monsters never really die. But you knew that). The twist this time is there an even greater threat for these iconic giant creatures to each other and the world, so instead of being on opposite sides of the ring, they team up against an evil new villain, a batshit-crazy ape on steroids named Skar King, in order to save not just Hollow Earth — where most of the action takes place in a dense rainforest — but just about everyone else.

Let them fight? No. Let Them Be Friends!
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire had me feeling like a little Donato again; sitting on the couch, cradling a bowl of sugary cereal, with my favorite Saturday morning cartoons on TV (like Godzilla: The Series). Will the screenplay win an Academy Award? Hell no. Does director Adam Wingard have an absolute blast staging supersized Titan mayhem? Big time.
Godzilla: Minus One satisfied our cravings for societally introspective and richly commentative kaiju narratives that produce more than citywide destruction. Godzilla x Kong is almost exclusively about everything Toho’s Oscar-winning Godzilla flick is not.
