The comedian talks to Screen about his most personal and challenging project to date.
Starting out in stand-up comedy in 2001, while he was a student at New York University, Aziz Ansari has built an increasingly high-profile career that includes seven seasons playing Tom Haverford on hit NBC sitcom Parks And Recreation. It was while working on that show that Ansari met writer Alan Yang, and the idea of his most recent project, Netflix comedy Master Of None, was born.
“Alan and I were really close friends during the whole run of Parks And Rec,” says Ansari. “We would always lightly talk about doing our own series and shooting it in New York, and doing something that was only eight or 10 episodes as opposed to the 22-episode form of Parks.”
As Parks And Recreation began winding down (the show came to an end in 2015), the duo became more serious about the prospect of Master Of None. Ansari and Yang...

Plot: A naive young woman moves to Queens, New York and is quickly swept up in a love affair with a neighborhood drug dealer, leading her down a path of addiction and abuse. Review: After debuting at Sundance this past winter, White Girl might as well arrive carrying the label "the feel-bad movie of the year." It's a grimy, distressing slice of New York City life that will turn... Read More...

You know what's crazier than leaving a half a million salary in NYC to move to West Covina, California (2 hours from the beach! - 4 in traffic) on the off chance your ex boyfriend from teen summer camp might be interested in reviving your fling as an adult? Not much. But it is crazy that The Film Experience didn't adopt Crazy Ex Girlfriend in the way it adopted Smash since musicals are kind of our thing (well, one of our things). Over the past two weeks I accidentally ended up rewatching the first five episodes again with friends who hadn't seen them so they're fresh in mind. So with Season 1 now on Netflix, let's catch up before Season 2 arrives in October.
S1:E1 "Josh Just Happens to Live Here!"
In which Rebecca randomly spots her first love in the street and takes it as a sign that she should follow him to West Covina,...

With the Season 3 debut of Power on July 17, Starz's most-watched series may become its strongest one too. Now moved to the big leagues of Sunday nights after two successful years on Saturdays, the mantra for this season of the fast-paced drama is "Ghost Must Die," but the chorus should be "ladies are livin’ large." Drenched in the dialects, divisions and mash-ups that are 2016 New York City life from borough to borough, background to background and block to block…...

City style! Pregnant Kristin Cavallari took to Instagram on Tuesday, Aug. 4, to share her latest maternity street wear, featuring just the right touch of boho-fabulousness for the concrete jungle. "City life today," the Fabulist host, 28, who's expecting a baby girl, wrote, captioning a photo of her chic ensemble—a fitted black dress that perfectly showcased her blossoming bump. She also rocked a cropped denim jacket and chocolate-hued suede booties. To complete the outfit, she added cat-eye shades, a fringed crossbody bag, and a statement necklace. On the [...]...

Mark Kermode on modern film criticism, critics of his own work, Michael Bay, Jason Statham and male oil wrestling.
The last time we spoke to Mark Kermode, he'd just launched his book about the state of movie criticism, Hatchet Job. Since then, he's embarked on a nationwide tour with the book, and undertaken dozens of Q&As with audiences about it.
And that, as Hatchet Job continues to thrive in paperback, is where we started...
I spoke to you just as you launched Hatchet Job, and in your words, since then you've "toured the arse off it". You've done Q&As with the people who've read your book, and who you wrote it for.
So what have you learned about what audiences feel regarding film critics, and where they sit in the world?
I think the most important thing was when I started writing it, I was, as you know,...

For two weeks every year, New York City finds itself more . . . culturally diverse. What, you ask? How can the already most culturally diverse place in the world get more so? Well that’s easy to answer with Robert DeNiro’s, Jane Rosenthal’s and Craig Hatkoff’s eleventh annual Tribeca Film Festival. Created in 2003 in response to the 9/11 attacks, the festival has come to feature both established filmmakers and first timers alike in the celebration of not only cinema but everything that it evokes within the audience.
The Tribeca Film Festival kicked off its Espn Sports Film Festival Gala with director Michael Rapaport’s documentary When the Garden Was Eden. About the New York Knicks during the 1970s, the film featured clips and players from the championship as well as others talking about how the team won its glory.

The Dixie Square Mall is best known for its role in the 1980s Blues Brothers film. It is the scene of an epic car chase that sends Elwood and Jake Blues crashing through the interior of the mall in an attempt to evade police. However, the mall has a history that makes it more reminiscent of the Monroeville Mall in Dawn of the Dead.
Opened in 1966, it was your pretty standard suburban shopping mall, with over 60 shops and three anchor stores. But the town of Harvey, where the mall existed, was a failing suburb that became poverty-stricken, leading to an increase in crime. Countless robberies took place at the Dixie Square Mall, and gangs kept families away. The first death at the mall came in 1968, when an elderly woman was killed in the parking lot in a hit and run accident. A woman was fatally shot in a botched robbery...

Austin was filmmaker Alex R. Johnson's "something better" from the hustle and bustle of New York City life. Johnson had searched for a city that wouldn't necessarily compete with his memories of the Big Apple, but for a community of like-minded individuals that weren't worried about their role on Law & Order. His dear pal and composer Andrew Kenny, aka Kenny, also made the move with his wife last year after an extended SXSW trip. The house that Kenny and his wife bought became the fictional home of a character in his and Johnson's latest movie Two Step (Don's review).
"I didn't really know what I was getting myself into," Kenny said.
That may have been an understatement. Once a truck and generator showed up at the Kenny home, they knew they were in for surprises. Memories of the ten-day shoot at their house continue to show up in the form of fake blood droplets.

While Hollywood seems content to churn out an endless stream of soulless romantic comedies brimming with too many stars, a string of low-budget rom-coms have recently hit theaters boasting more heart than Hollywood could ever handle. The latest is A Case of You, a touching, timely tale of Sam, a young writer (played by Justin Long) who, to land the love of his life; a free-spirit named Birdie (played by the luminous Evan Rachel Wood), engages in some reverse Catfishing.
To turn himself into the perfect man, Sam treats Birdie's Facebook page like an online Cyrano de Bergerac; telling him what to like, what to think and what kinds of dates to take her on. It's easily one of the year's most charming films and an absolute can't miss for all rom-com fans!

Yesterday it was the royal hunks, today's "The Hobbit" dwarf pictorial (via Stuff.co.nz) features three more dwarves who represent a quite different background - the rougher and life loving working class trio of Bombur (Stephen Hunter), Bofur (James Nesbitt) and Bifur (William Kircher). Here's the description of their characters:
"Born and bred in the West, descendants of coal miners and iron workers, they have joined the Quest for the Lonely Mountain partly to seek their fortune and partly because they were told the beer was free."
Hunter is a familiar face on Australian and New Zealand television with a role in several episodes of the acclaimed "Love My Way" along with guest starring roles on "All Saints," "Spirited," "Mercy Peak" and "Street Legal".
Irish actor Nesbitt is an outright legend of British television with memorable leading role turns in "Jekyll," "Cold Feet," "Ballykissangel," "Playing the Field," "Murphy's Law,...

Seven more names have been locked in for Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic "The Hobbit" in an official press release today.
As previously reported, former "Doctor Who" star Sylvester McCoy is now officially locked and is indeed playing the wizard Radagast the Brown. Not unexpected but a highly pleasurable confirmation as well today is that Oscar winner Cate Blanchett will reprise her role of Galadriel, the Lady of Lothlorien which she portrayed in the "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
Joining them are Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt ("Everlasting Moments") as the shape-shifter Beorn, veteran British these Ken Stott ("Shallow Grave," "Rebus") as the Dwarf Lord Balin.
Two more dwarves have been cast - New Zealanders Jed Brophy ("The Warrior's Way," "District 9") and William Kircher ("Out of the Blue," "City Life") will play Nori and Bifur respectively. Finally, Ryan Gage (Outlaw, BBC's "Hamlet") will play Bilbo Baggins' second cousin Drogo.

About a month ago, I made a very difficult decision that I hope will be the right one. Capitalizing on another opportunity, I have decided to step down from my role here at The Big Picture effective September 7th. So hurl your insults while you can...
What does that mean for you? Hopefully, a better experience here, for starters. The site is not going away, and in fact, the new management will be breaking in several contributors - something I have only done rarely for one-off guest reviews and the like - and you'll get more than one opinion about each story. There should be more stories, too, and probably more willingness to cover that latest Kevin Smith update.
So you might notice a couple new names over the next few weeks and some other cosmetic alterations. That's par for the course, though, and I think it's great that they're...
