Gabriel Byrne Joins History Channel’s ‘Vikings’

22 May 2012 6:31 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Well, this should certainly help legitimize History Channel’s first original series, Vikings. It looks as though the series about Norsemen, their various raids and the people who love them, has signed Golden Globe-winning actor Gabriel Byrne to portray Earl Haraldson, a high-ranking Viking leader who takes a particular dislike to ambitious upstart Ragnar Lothbrok.

Byrne should be familiar to audiences from films like Miller’s Crossing and The Usual Suspects. In addition to his many film roles, Byrne also headed up the critically-acclaimed HBO series In Treatment, from 2008-2010, and will also be taking a major role in the upcoming UK series Coup – though no word on whether or not that series has any plans to air in the U.S.

Vikings, meanwhile, will consist of a 10-episode season that tells the story of historical figure Ragnar Lothbrok. According to ...

“The Wolverine” Starts Filming in August

21 May 2012 2:12 PM, PDT | FamousMonsters of Filmland | See recent Famous Monsters of Filmland news »

Hugh Jackman announced on his Twitter today that The Wolverine will start filming in August, JoBlo reports. After Darren Aronofsky unfortunately dropped out because of scheduling difficulties, The Wolverine has struggled to get traction. But it looks like it has, as James Mangold (Girl, Interrupted) has taken the reins on the project as director, with Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) the man behind the script. The film is set to cover Wolverine’s Japanese/Samurai years, and while Aronofsky would’ve Killed it, I’m excited to see Jackman’s Wolvy once again, and Mangold and McQuarrie have solid resumes. And because movies have release dates before they’ve even started filming (stupidly, I might add), we can expect The Wolverine to come out July 26, 2013. »

8 Awesome First Images from Alex Cross with Matthew Fox, Tyler Perry & Ed Burns

18 May 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Alex Cross will be Matthew Fox like we’ve never seen him before. These first images show Fox as an utter killing machine, armed to the teeth with just his bare muscles (and also a gun).

After Morgan Freeman played the role of Dr. Alex Cross in the first two adaptations of James Patterson’s series of books, Tyler Perry will now be front and centre as the detective tasked to track down the killer.

“After Washington DC detective Alex Cross is told that a family member has been murdered, he vows to track down the killer. He soon discovers that she was not his first victim and that things are not what they seem.”

Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) is behind the camera, with a script co-written by Marc Moss (Along Came a Spider) and Kerry Williamson, adapting Patterson’s 2006 novel, Cross.

Why the world needs Val Kilmer

11 May 2012 7:38 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

He could have been another Brad Pitt. Instead he's doing one-man stage shows. Is it time for a rescue plan?

For some time now, I have belonged to a secret society known as the League of Rueful Val Kilmer Enthusiasts. It consists of men of a certain age who adore Tombstone and Heat, and who also have a soft spot for The Doors and The Ghost and the Darkness. And, of course, Top Gun. What unites the members of the league is our affection for the actor himself, mingled with regret that Kilmer did not become the intergalactically famous star we wanted him to be. We also resent the fact that he did not make more movies like Heat while he was young and athletic enough to pull it off.

Because now it is too late. Kilmer has reached the point in his career where he is performing in a one-man show called Citizen Twain, »

Move Over 'The Avengers,' Clark Gregg Joins Jason Reitman’s 'Labor Day'

9 May 2012 7:57 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Long relegated to post-credit sequences and scene-stealing bit parts as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel movies, it was nice to see actor Clark Gregg gain a little more screen time in this past weekend’s superhero brouhaha “The Avengers.” Granted, the silver screen was still mostly dedicated to the sweaty, muscle-bound (sometimes green) dudes in spandex, but Gregg had more than his share of moments, and has been consistently good with small parts in films like “(500) Days of Summer” and “The Usual Suspects.” He’s a bit part character actor who deserves a movie all his own – in fact he’s been in a few diverting short films entitled “Marvel One-Shots” centered on Agent Coulson—but for now he’s looking to move into some promising adult fare.

THR is now reporting that he’s joining an 'Avengers'-like acting super team in the form of “Young Adult” helmer Jason Reitman’s “Labor Day, »

Tom Cruise’s ‘One Shot’ Preview Hints That a Kick Ass Adaptation May Be Within Reach

24 April 2012 4:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Lee Child‘s Jack Reacher series of novels continue to hit the bestseller lists, and this December they’ll get their first crack at the box office when One Shot hits theaters. The film is about an ex-mp who gets caught up in murder investigation when a military sniper kills five seemingly random civilians. The film is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun) and co-stars Richard Jenkins, Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, and Werner Freaking Herzog as a villain. Oh, and it stars Tom Cruise in the lead role as Jack Reacher. It’s that last bit that continues to rile fans of Child’s books as the recurring character is consistently described as a 6’5″ monster of a man whose physical presence plays a role in his every encounter. Some readers just don’t think Cruise is up to the task. But footage from the film has just screened at »

CinemaCon: First Footage From Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher Movie Screened!

24 April 2012 | Comingsoon.net | See recent Comingsoon.net news »

One of the biggest surprises at Paramount's CinemaCon presentation was when they decided to show some of the first footage from Tom Cruise's upcoming stint as Lee Child's popular crime novel character Jack Reacher, who has appeared in sixteen books to date. For a long time, the movie was called One Shot , the title of Child's ninth Jack Reacher book, but those words were never to be said or seen during the presentation, so there's a good chance the movie is now merely called "Jack Reacher." Or maybe they're still trying to figure that out. Co-written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who most may know as the writer of The Usual Suspects and who hasn't directed a movie since 2000's Way of the Gun , the movie had been kept fairly quiet while shooting in Pittsburgh »

The newest issue of Entertainment Weekly talks about the upcoming show, and while it has previously been said that it will be edgier than the original, series creator Bryan Fuller mentions that it is still family-friendly: “We want this to be an American Harry Potter… It’s an American Horror Story the whole family can watch.”

The magazine also notes that Fuller hopes to include other classic horror chracters from the Universal library, including the Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Invisible Man.

Titanic 3D Box Office: Much Better Overseas

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games Passes $300m? Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on the North American box office chart, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $21.5 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. That's quite a bit lower than the $25 million some had been expecting as late as Friday evening, or the near-$30 million predicted by Box Office Mojo a few days ago. If those estimates are correct, Universal will surely claim that American Reunion easily surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original American Pie at 2,508 sites in 1999. In 2012 dollars, however, American Pie would have earned approximately $29 million. And what that means is: many more tickets were sold for American Pie than for American Reunion. Kate Winslet as Rose, Titanic 3D The Hunger Games will easily top the North American box for the third weekend in a row. Gary Ross' dystopic adventure tale collected $12.9 million on Friday, April 6, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The film will likely earn somewhere between $35-$40 million over the Easter weekend. If so, it will be down around 30-35% compared to a week ago — or about half its 62% drop-off rate last (non-holiday) weekend. The Hunger Games should cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box office on Sunday. Its current total is $282.23 million. The Hunger Games Box Office: Titanic 3D, American Reunion?

Leonardo DiCaprio, Titanic The Hunger Games will easily top the North American box office once again this weekend — its third time as no. 1 — according to Deadline.com's "sources." As per Deadline's early, rough estimates, The Hunger Games is expected to collect $12-$14 million on Friday, and could reach $40 million over the Easter weekend. If so, Gary Ross' movie would be down close to 30% compared to last weekend — or less than half its drop-off rate last (non-holiday) weekend. It seems that Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion will be the no. 2 movie on Friday, with somewhere between $8-$10 million at 3,192 locations, and an estimated $25 million by Sunday evening. That includes $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings in North America. Titanic Box Office: Behind The Hunger Games

James Cameron's Titanic movie Titanic 3D was the no. 2 movie on the domestic box-office chart on Wednesday, April 4, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Directed by the Marianas Trench's James Cameron, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D collected $4.37 million at 2,674 theaters, landing right behind The Hunger Games' $4.6 million at 4,137 locations. Comparisons are hard to make. The Hunger Games is in 2D, which means cheaper movie ticket prices, but it's playing at 1,500 more theaters than Titanic 3D. The Hunger Games has also been around for 13 days; Titanic 3D opened on Tuesday, earning approximately $325,000 at various preview screenings. Titanic 3D Box Office: No.1 Domestic?

Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D Titanic 3D may have sailed to the top of the North American box-office chart on Wednesday, grossing an estimated $4.7 million at about 2,600 locations according to The Hollywood Reporter. That figure includes $300,000 earned at Tuesday night previews, and 71 IMAX screens. Directed by James Cameron, who made perfectly-timed headlines about a week ago thanks to a quick deep-sea trek, the 1997 megablockbuster stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Titanic's chief competition for the no. 1 slot is 2012's own megablockbuster, Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games. The Gary Ross dystopic adventure drama earned an estimated $4.6-$4.7 million on Wednesday — without the added Tuesday night bonus or box-office-boosting 3D surcharges. The 25 Most Essential '90s Movies

5 April 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

There's a reason you've recently had the urge to bust out your plaid shirts, Celine Dion albums and dial-up modems, as this week sees the release of two relics of the 1990s: "Titanic 3D" and "American Reunion."

Since both of these movies make us think back to a more innocent time when Monica Lewinsky was an eager young White House intern, our money wasn't on fire and Twittering was a weird body tic, we're reminiscing about that decade's most influential and essential cinematic treasures for future generations. It wasn't easy to narrow down the list (next time, "Problem Child 2," next time ...) but if we were to preserve only 25 flicks from the '90s in a time capsule, they would be these (listed in alphabetical order).

1. 'American Pie' (1999)
