You may not have heard the name Tom Hooper but you’ll know his work.
Cutting his teeth on UK TV with Prime Suspect, EastEnders (and Byker Grove…) Hooper made the leap to work on a broader canvas with the epic HBO serials Longford and John Adams and whose recent work, The Damned United, made great use of Michael Sheen’s uncanny ability to embody larger than life characters.
His next project is The King’s Speech, a character piece which tells the story of King George IV’s relationship with a speech therapist as he fights to lose his nervous stammer and live up to his royal duty. Hooper continues to work with talented actors and the key roles here are taken by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush as the King and therapist respectively.
Tonight we’ve learned from The Hollywood Reporter that the project has attracted a very »

Happy Friday the 13th! Walk under a ladder, hang out with a black cat, and see some movies. It's a very British heavy release week; three British films are opening in town (two with Emma Thompson in them). Two films new to Austin are directed by Dogme 95 alums. You know, the minimalist film movement started by Lars von Triers and others to thumb their noses at Hollywood and big budgets, with a manifesto demanding a vow of cinematic chastity? Can you guess which film on the list is anti-Dogme?
An Education -- It's London in the 1960s, and a teenage girl encounters a playboy in this coming of age story. Directed by Lone Scherfig (Italian for Beginners, Dogme #12 ), with a slew of memorable actors, including Dollhouse's Olivia Williams, Rosamund Pike (Pride and Prejudice), Dominic Cooper (The History Boys), and the inestimable Emma Thompson. Only a select few were able »

I'm thrilled that Martin Amis's great novel is to be adapted for screen – but the omens aren't good
Having always been sceptical about television's obsession with costume drama, I've never really understood what it must be like for the admirers of Jane Austen when, every two or three weeks, as it seems, a new production of Pride and Prejudice or Emma is announced.
Yesterday, though, I experienced the combination of excitement and defensive apprehension which must affect Jane-ites when they learn that yet another young British actress is being measured for a bonnet. Martin Amis's Money, a key book for my generation of English students and fiction readers, is to be dramatised on BBC2, bringing to an end a quarter of a century of aborted attempts since its publication in 1984.
Whereas the followers of Miss Austen sit nervously in front of their sets worrying if Mr Darcy will be dashing enough, »

Up I just reviewed the Blu-ray version of this release and may I just say it is worth every penny. Pixar films look phenomenal in high-definition and the word "flawless" is by no means a stretch. Along with my review I have also included a clip from the new animated short "Dug's Special Mission," so just click here for the video and full review details.
Oh, and if you want to buy it in store you can get a $10 off coupon right here. Monsters, Inc. Yup, it's Pixar week on Blu-ray as Monsters, Inc. joins Up as well as a gift pack version of Cars and this one too manages to impress greatly. There are a few new features, which I detailed in my review and I also included a sneak peek at the new roundtable feature in my review right here. »

Well, we can't be right all the time. Last week we brought you the news from the trades (it was in Variety! It's not our fault!) that Joe Wright, director of Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, would be reteaming with Keira Knightley for a new version of My Fair Lady, scripted by Emma Thompson. It turns out that at least 33.3% of that story is completely untrue, as discovered by Screenrush when they asked Joe Wright about it at the London Film Festival."It's not happening! It's all a lie!" opines Wright. "I thought about it for a couple of minutes and decided not to do it, and then suddenly it got into the press that I was doing it." And his motives for turning it down? "No reason really. You get a lot of scripts and you read them and..."So that's Danny Boyle and Joe Wright out of the director's chair. »

Well, here's a spanner in the works: Joe Wright directly contradicts reports from this past weekend that he'll be directing My Fair Lady. For the better part of two years, Keira Knightley has been the odds-on choice to update Eliza Doolittle, and we wrote that she had beaten out Scarlett Johansson for the role just a few days ago. As part of that announcement, Wright's name was dropped as the new director. But not according to him.
You can see in the video below (from Screenrush) that Wright isn't making the movie, plain and simple. It's a natural connection, though, because his first two films - Pride and Prejudice and Atonement - both starred Knightley. Plus, after the disappointing returns of The Soloist, Wright might have been reaching for a sure thing.
No such luck, though: »

British actress Susan Hampshire is dreading leaving home for an upcoming theatre tour - because her husband Sir Eddie Kulukundis' dementia is worsening.
The veteran star has been married to the theatre impresario for nearly thirty years and has been nursing him since his health began to fail a year ago.
And she's worried about leaving her partner alone as she prepares to go on a U.K. theatre tour with stage show Pride and Prejudice.
She tells Britain's Daily Express, "I'm worried about leaving Eddie. His memory is going. He's had dementia for about a year but it's definitely getting worse.
"I have arranged for someone to come in and take care of him but I will come home as many nights as I can."
A source adds, "This is very sad. Susan and Eddie are one of the most devoted couples in showbusiness and he is universally liked." »

The ever-loverly Audrey Hepburn is back as Eliza Doolittle in the latest release of My Fair Lady on DVD. I wasn't sure why — it had to have been put out on DVD at least once before. In fact, it was released by Warner Bros. in 1998 and then again as a "Two-Disc Special Edition" in 2004. Paramount obtained the rights last year and put out a new edition earlier this month, complete with its own set of special features.
My Fair Lady, the musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, follows Ms. Doolittle, a poor flower girl with a strong Cockney accent which, due to the time period and setting, puts her at a strong social and vocational disadvantage. Looking to better her situation, she approaches Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison), a phonetics expert, about speech lessons. Higgins, intrigued, bets his friend Colonel Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White) that he can pass »

Keira Knightley has not landed a role in "My Fair Lady". Few days after U.K.'s Telegraph reported that she has beaten Scarlett Johansson to play the major character in the remake of 1964 film with the same title, Gossip Cop has received a confirmation from her agent's office, who said the news was "not true."
Moreover, the agent's office claimed they knew nothing about the upcoming movie's production. Meanwhile, Keira's involvement in singing lessons, which has been linked to her preparation for joining the musical film, has been described as part of her forthcoming stage debut in a London production of a play entitled "The Misanthrope."
U.K.'s Telegraph was the first which came up with news that Keira Knightley has been chosen to portray Eliza Doolittle in the 2011 film. Moreover, the site reported that she will team up once again with director Joe Wright, with whom she »

There are few Hollywood starlets that I rate more highly than marginally spade-faced Keira Knightley, and of all late actresses I am fairly unoriginal in my fondness for Audrey Hepburn, so the rumours quite some time ago that Knightley has signed up to fill Hepburn’s shoes in a planned remake of My Fair Lady is, for me, great news. The whispers around the project died down though, until today when stories have begun circulating that Joe Wright, director of Knightley in Pride and Prejudice and the amazing Atonement, is also set to be involved. So Audrey Hepburn is back, but unlike Audrey, Keira’s vocals won’t be dubbed if her singing in last year’s The Edge of Love is anything to go by. The problem seems to be, however, whether or not any individual can ever truly succeed in a performance that has been done to perfection already, »

Just you wait Henry Higgins, just you wait. Joe Wright, director of Pride And Prejudice and Atonement, is to remake the 1960's eight-time Oscar winning film My Fair Lady. After the cancellation of Indian Summer due to budget and plot conflicts, Wright is now free to take on the family favourite that originally starred Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.
Additionally, it is looking more and more likely that Keira Knightley will play cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle after producer Duncan Kenworthy was cited saying "I think Keira would be absolutely fabulous in it". Knightley was allegedly in competition with the musically minded Scarlett Johansson.
So Knightley is looking more and more like the obvious choice for the role -a London girl, cheekbones galore and with a few singing lessons under her belt. If the casting goes ahead, let's just hope she can deliver a successful remake of a George Cukor classic. »

If this is all confirmed, this becomes a major upcoming project, one worth noting now. Keira Knightley and Joe Wright have had a very successful collaboration so far on both "Pride and Prejudice" and "Atonement," and both of them have benefitted from those successes. The two of them working together on anything becomes news by virtue of their track record together. But the two of them working together on "My Fair Lady" with a screenplay by Emma Thompson? That is news. Really, really good news. I've liked Wright more than his material so far, but I think "My Fair Lady" is a... »

For those not yet accustomed enough to her face, Keira Knightley, long rumoured to be on for the role, will shortly be starring as Eliza Doolittle in a redo of My Fair Lady. She'll be re-teaming with Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice), whose Indian Summer is currently on-hold, and possibly now permanently cancelled. As you'll recall from your A Levels, My Fair Lady is the famous musical based on George Bernard Shaw's song-free Pygmalion, in which cockernee Eliza Doolittle is taken under the wing of Professor 'Enry 'Iggins, and lady-fied, for a bet. Julie Andrews made the role her own on stage, but was passed over for George Cukor's 1964 film version in favour of Audrey Hepburn, whose voice was then dubbed for the singing bits. Not so with Keira, who's been taking singing lessons, and won the role despite stiff competition from Scarlett Johansson. Emma Thompson is writing the script, »

Producer Duncan Kenworthy has confirmed that Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean) has beaten Scarlett Johansson for the part of Eliza Doolittle in a new film adaptation of 'My Fair Lady', reports the UK's Telegraph.
Joe Wright will helm the remake and chose Knightly partially on account of their successful collaboration on Pride and Prejudice, which Wright also directed.
"Joe and Keira are looking forward to working together again immensely," a friend of Wright's was quoted by the Telegraph as saying.
Knightley had previously confirmed that she'd auditioned for the role last year and and already begun singing lessons.
Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) has been mentioned as a possible Professor Henry Higgins.
The script is being penned by Emma Thompson.
'My Fair Lady' is a musical based upon George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" and with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. »

After playing Elizabeth Swann in "Pirates of the Carribean" film series, Keira Knightley has been reported to play Eliza Doolittle in "My Fair Lady". According to U.K.'s Telegraph, she has beaten Scarlett Johansson, who has previously been rumored competing with the British beauty for the role.
Moreover, the site reported that Keira will team up once again with director Joe Wright, with whom she worked together on "Pride and Prejudice". "Joe and Keira are looking forward to working together again immensely," a friend of the helmer said.
In 2008, Keira Knightley confirmed that she has been auditioned for the role in "My Fair Lady" and begun singing lessons. Then, in early October this year, one of the producers for the upcoming movie, Duncan Kenworthy, expressed his desire to see the 24-year-old actress being involved in the film, stating "I think Keira would be absolutely fabulous in it."

Actress Keira "Pride And Prejudice" Knightley will play 'Eliza Doolittle' in the upcoming remake of the 1964 classic musical My Fair Lady, for director Joe "Atonement" Wright. The original movie was based on the musical My Fair Lady, adapted from the play Pygmalion by author George Bernard Shaw, in turn inspired by a play by the Greek author Ovid. The new screenplay is written by Emma "Sense And Sensibility" Thompson. "...In London, 'Henry Higgins', an arrogant, irascible, misogynistic professor of phonetics, believes that it is the accent and tone of one's voice which determines a person's prospects in society. He boasts to a new acquaintance, 'Colonel Hugh Pickering', himself an expert in phonetics, that he can teach any woman to speak so "properly" that he could pass her off as a duchess at an embassy ball, citing, as an example, a young flower seller called 'Eliza Doolittle', who has a strong Cockney accent. »
