The new Karate Kid movie, starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, was set to have a release date coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original 1984 movie in June 2024. However, the strikes of 2023 moved this release date to December 13, 2024. Now, the latest upsetting update suggests that the movie will not be released during its 40th anniversary year at all. The new date of release for the movie is May 30, 2025.

The change in dates has triggered a backward domino effect as Sony pushed the date of release of Kraven the Hunter to Karate Kid‘s original date of December 13 this year. This makes the Aaron Taylor-Johnson film one of the only R-rated films during the Christmas holidays this year.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

The number of actors the Netflix TV series Cobra Kai has brought back to reprise their characters from the Karate Kid films has been very impressive. Not only do you have Ralph Macchio and William Zabka back as Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence, but there’s also Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith as villains John Kreese and Terry Silver, Yuji Okumoto and Sean Kanan as villains-turned-allies Chozen Toguchi and Mike Barnes; Ron Thomas, Rob Garrison, and Tony O’Dell as Johnny’s former Cobra Kai buddies; and appearances by Elisabeth Shue as Ali Mills, Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko, and Robyn Lively as Jessica Andrews. They even brought Traci Toguchi back as Yuna, the “Girl Bell Ringer” she played in The Karate Kid Part II. But one actor who might not be returning from the films is Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid.

Oof, "Madame Web." Critics have savaged the latest Spider-Manless Spider-Man spin-off from Sony Pictures (read /Film's review here). Unlike the Sydney Sweeney picture I'm actually looking forward to this year, "Madame Web" is not "Immaculate." It's a hackneyed joke that in bad movies of this sort, the best part is when the credits hit. In "Madame Web," that's doubly true because you'll get to hear some nice music: "Dreams" by The Cranberries.
Released in 1992, "Dreams" is the Irish band's debut single, part of their first album "Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?" Dolores O'Riordan, The Cranberries' late singer, and guitarist Noal Hogan wrote the song about the experience of love. O'Riordan's whimsical brogue becomes a melody played against the soft rock instrumentals from her bandmates. It's not just a great love song, but a song about how it feels to be in love: the floating excitement, how...

This isn’t about favourite actors. Those guys surf along on a wave of goodwill and personal adoration that means you’ll pretty much watch them in anything, regardless of quality. If Wes Bentley‘s your fav, for instance, you’ll have sought out Dolan’s Cadillac and Hirokin: The Last Samurai because you love the man, but you’ll be no better off for it.
This is about a different kind of actor – not your indulged favourite, but the one who’s earned your respect. When this actor’s name appears in a cast list, you sit up and pay attention because over the years, they’ve proved that they have the taste, integrity and talent to make their IMDb credits page if not a flawless, then certainly an interesting place to be. The collaborations they’re a part of and the projects they pick are worth seeking out.

Up until now, the Karate Kid franchise has lived on solely through the "Cobra Kai" TV series, but in 2024, it's set to return to the big screen with a brand-new movie. The untitled project will mark the sixth installment in the franchise and will release exactly 40 years after the first Karate Kid film premiered in 1984. The original movie starred Ralph Macchio as a teenager named Daniel Larusso, who learns karate from martial arts master Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in order to defend himself against a group of bullies, one of whom includes Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Since their rivalry is also at the center of "Cobra Kai," we're left to wonder whether the new film will bring the iconic pair back once more.
In September 2022, Macchio told Entertainment Weekly that he wasn't attached to the project, however, since the movie was still in its early stages, anything could happen. "I...

Cobra Kai has been renewed for season 6 over at Netflix, and while the series found an amazing longevity, the sixth season is touted as the final outing for the kids of the All-Valley Tournaments. As Netflix joins the other streaming platforms in canceling shows, Cobra Kai is not one they wanted to pull the plug on. Instead, series creator and showrunner, Jon Hurwitz has stated on his Twitter that it was the creative team’s decision to make this upcoming season the finale and not Netflix.

Knowing that Cobra Kai Season 6 will be the final season is a little bit sad. Cobra Kai gave Karate Kid fans so much joy and introduced a whole new generation of karate kids. At least ending the show now means the inevitable legacy revival will happen even sooner. The final season of Cobra Kai is sure to end with a bang. Here are seven burning questions we hope the Cobra Kai final season answers.

If the revival of "The Karate Kid" franchise in the form of "Cobra Kai" wasn't enough for your martial arts cravings, then Hasbro has a next-level crossover that will both blow your mind and confound your senses. After a collection of action figure two-packs teamed up characters from "Cobra Kai" with the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Daniel Larusso has been imbued with the might of the "Power Rangers."
Hasbro revealed a trio of action figures taking cues from both "Cobra Kai" and "Power Rangers" by turning a couple of the west coast's finest martial artists into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. "Cobra Kai" shocked everyone with its unbelievable return to "The Karate Kid" universe. The show, which was created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, is essentially one giant love letter to the original films. Not only is it smart, original, and funny, but it's also done an incredible job of tying in many of the characters from the first three films. (This particular writer is also desperate to see Hilary Swank reprise her role as Julie Pierce from "The Next Karate Kid.") Season 2 saw the epic and heartfelt return of Johnny Lawrence's (William Zabka) original Cobra Kai pals, Tommy (Rob Garrison), Bobby (Ron Thomas), and Jimmy (Tony O'Dell). Elisabeth Shue reprised her role as Ali Mills, and both Martin Cove and Thomas Ian Griffith have returned to the franchise as the show's formidable villains, John Kreese and Terry Silver, respectively.

New Karate Kid movie: Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz confirms he is not involved in Sony’s spinoff
Update:
Netflix series creator co-creator Jon Hurwitz has confirmed he is not involved in the making of Sony’s new Karate Kid movie.
“The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well,” Hurwitz said on Twitter while participating in a fan Q&a on Twitter.
Neither Sony nor Hurwitz has elaborated on the new Karate Kid movie since the update. Still, it’s nice to have a confirmation from Hurwitz early in the project’s announcement. Clearing up this bit of business keeps Cobra Kai fans (like myself) from speculating about Sony’s plans for the new movie, at least as far as Cobra Kai is concerned. What will the plot of the new Karate Kid movie turn out to be?...

Despite some speculation, the “Cobra Kai” creators are not involved in the upcoming “Karate Kid” movie.
“Cobra Kai” creator Jon Hurwitz responded to a fan on Twitter Saturday who asked if he’d heard anything about the new film, which has been teased as a return of the original “Karate Kid” franchise. He was quick to explain that he actually had no involvement with the films, but wished them well.

A new “Karate Kid” movie is in the works and has been dated for a release by Sony’s Columbia Pictures for June 7, 2024.
No new details were shared about the film currently in development other than that it is a return of the original “Karate Kid” franchise.
The original “Karate Kid” from 1984 starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita and spawned two sequels with Macchio, a fourth film in 1994 “The Next Karate Kid” with Morita and Hilary Swank, and a remake in 2010 with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. But the franchise has had a major resurgence thanks to the series “Cobra Kai” looking at the villainous dojo from the original film. Sony Television also produces “Cobra Kai,” and the show not only includes many of the same actors and characters reprising their original roles, but the latest fifth season ended on a cliffhanger that could point the way to a new feature.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Cobra Kai" season 5.
In "Cobra Kai" season 5, Terry Silver's (Thomas Ian Griffith) dojo had some international visitors. If you recall, Silver took over Cobra Kai after the All-Valley Tournament at the end of season 4, opening several franchises with state-of-the-art equipment and very shady business practices. Silver has some big plans for his evil dojo dominion, including competing in an international tournament called the Sekai Taikai. He invites a delegation from the tournament to his flagship dojo for a demonstration and possible acceptance into the competition.
If Cobra Kai's students win there, it could change everything, putting the final nail in the coffins of Eagle Fang/Miyagi Do. At the last minute, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) show up. After a display of karate prowess from all dojos, the delegation accepts both sides into the competition.

Cobra Kai fans have been asking for the past two seasons whether or not an appearance from Hilary Swank, reprising the role of Julie Pierce from The Next Karate Kid, could be in the cards. Following the release of the hit Netflix series’ fifth season with no Swank in sight, the speculation continues.
Swank addressed whether or not she’s keen to return to the Miyagi-verse while promoting her upcoming ABC series, Alaska Daily during the show’s TCA presentation on Wednesday.
“I was told that I’m supposed to only keep it to Alaska Daily, so I guess that question is for another time,” she told Deadline with a laugh.

When Xolo Maridueña first stepped into the Blue Beetle suit, there were “a lot of nerves and exhilaration” that came with embodying the DC superhero.
“Excited is not the first word that comes to my brain,” Maridueña told Variety at the Season 5 red carpet premiere of “Cobra Kai” on Wednesday night. “It is nervous excitement, it’s antsiness. It’s the anticipation of knowing that you’re on the brink of something potentially big, but it still feels really intimate because you’re just with the cast and the crew.”
The 21-year-old actor will be portraying the lead role of Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle in DC’s first adaptation of a comic led by a Latino superhero. “I can’t wait for people to see one of the — if not the first — Latino-led superhero movies ever,” he continued.
Last month, it was revealed that Warner Bros. had scrapped plans entirely to release “Batgirl.

In 2016, Paul Feig reimagined the beloved "Ghostbusters" franchise for a new generation and made the daring decision to cast Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, and Leslie Jones as our proton-pack-wearing heroes. The response from "fans" was scarier than any ghost worth bustin'. People review bombed the film before it ever debuted and the official "Ghostbusters" Ultimate Gift Set omitted the film from its collection until I complained so loudly about it, Feig noticed and threw in his two cents, and then magically a digital copy was announced to be included.
The unbridled vitriol spewed from toxic fanboys regarding 2016's "Ghostbusters" felt unprecedented, with many viewing it as a look into the future of what happens when "boy franchises" dare to shift focus and let girls take center stage. Except, "Ghostbusters" wasn't the first time this had happened. More than two decades prior, "The Karate Kid" franchise decided to give Mr.

Mild spoilers for "Cobra Kai" season 5 ahead.
The Netflix series "Cobra Kai" is showing no mercy to those of us who love the "Karate Kid" franchise. Not only have we been able to catch up with Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) from 1984's "The Karate Kid," but we've got cameos galore from the subsequent offerings. Cobra Kai sensei Kreese (Martin Kove) is back, along with Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) and Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita) from the second film, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) and Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan) from the third, and a few more we won't spoil here.
It's a nostalgia bomb in all the best ways, and it's made a lot of us do a film marathon, if only to make sure we recognize all the "Cobra Kai" cameos before they show us flashbacks.

Netflix is gearing up for a busy end to 2022.

Plenty of people are divided on whether or not The Next Karate Kid is worth adding into the mix when it comes to the other movies since the only real link appears to be Mr. Miyagi, and Julie Pierce hasn’t been involved in Cobra Kai at all as of yet. But given the fact that the appearance of the young woman has been teased as of late, it almost feels as though there’s an obligation for a cameo at the very least since otherwise, it’s a very unfair tease that doesn’t serve much of a purpose, save to antagonize the

Cobra Kai brought back the stars of The Karate Kid, including Elisabeth Shue, and Season 4 even reintroduced Karate Kid III’s Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). So Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in 1994’s The Next Karate Kid, is the last big name on the table. On a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television panel, co-creator Hayden Schlossberg teased Swank’s possible return. At least, there’s no other show that could cast her as Julie Pierce.

“Anything is possible,” Schlossberg said. “I always say if you’re a fan of The Next Karate Kid and you want to see Julie Pierce who Hilary Swank played, we’re the show to watch to see if that happens. Season 5 is going to be coming out. It’s in the can. Anything is possible. Julie Pierce is one of the toys in the toy chest so we’ll see.

Last September, Sony Pictures TV renewed their contract with the creators of Cobra Kai – Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg. Cobra Kai finds itself among television’s upper echelon with today’s 2021 Emmy nominations announcement, which named it as a nominee for Outstanding Comedy Series for January’s Netflix-debuted third season. The series, a decades-awaited sequel to The Karate Kid films, has seen its popularity increase exponentially after a migration from YouTube Premium to Netflix, on which the nominated season premiered. It’s quite the achievement when remembering the show’s less-than-auspicious 2018 launch.
The Emmy nominations highlight a second pandemic-altered year for the industry, further cementing the notion that the overwhelming majority of television’s heavy hitters now reside in the realm of streaming, rather than the airwaves. Notwithstanding a sole network sitcom straggler in Black-ish (ABC), the tonally-diverse comedy category proved no exception to that phenomenon, with Cobra Kai (Netflix) joining fellow streamers in Emily in Paris (Netflix), Hacks (HBO Max), The Flight Attendant (HBO Max), The Kominsky Method...

Cobra Kai has spent three increasingly successful seasons of television reintroducing The Karate Kid film franchise’s cast of characters. Unsurprisingly, that effort is now confirmed to continue, thanks to a surprise teaser for the show’s fourth season, which has whetted appetites for the return of a major movie villain, Terry Silver. Indeed, the return of the character, the sinister schemer of 1989’s The Karate Kid Part III, could provide a game-changing sinister force for the show’s escalating war of rival karate dojos.
Thomas Ian Griffith is returning as Terry Silver, the villain he played in an entertainingly over-the-top manner in the 1989 threequel, as Netflix and the actor himself confirmed upon the release of the Cobra Kai Season 4 teaser trailer. Yet, like the show’s past movie character reunions, Silver’s return is, paradoxically, an expected surprise, since it’s the culmination of series-spanning hints such as a...

It’s kind of hard for people to believe this, but there doesn’t have to be any big, fanciful, or negative reason for a star to pass on a movie that belongs to a franchise that they helped to make popular. The idea of why there’s no sign of Ralph Macchio in The Next Karate Kid is pretty straightforward; he aged out. What that means obviously is that by the time the third movie came around Ralph was in his late 20s and still playing the role of a teenager, since Daniel’s story took place over the course of three movies

Cobra Kai season 3 is the first major streaming hit for Netflix in 2021. With each of the 10 episodes having running time of around a half hour, it makes for a quick binge overall. Dedicated fans inhaled the show in the first weekend and craved more.
Unfortunately, Netflix carries only one other film from the original Karate Kid franchise and it’s the outlier. The Next Karate Kid was Pat Morita’s final appearance as the venerable Mr. Miyagi. The film also introduces two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank in her first lead role as Julie Pierce. However, The Next Karate Kid was a flop. Morita is the only connection to the three previous films and despite Swank’s impressive breakout performance, Julie fails to carry the chemistry that Daniel-san (Ralph Macchio) had with Miyagi.
So where on Netflix can fans get their next Karate Kid fix? How about Indonesia?

Maybe Netflix knows that people have more important things on their mind this month, maybe the streamer is just saving its big guns for later, or maybe it’s just trying to focus everyone’s attention on Diana’s introduction on “The Crown” (she roller-skates in Buckingham Palace!), but November 2020 might be Netflix’s most anemic month for new releases since this column first ran four years ago. The jury is still out on Ron Howard’s Oscar hopeful “Hillbilly Elegy,” but with “Mank” and “The Prom” waiting in the wings until December that leaves a paltry slate of Netflix Originals topped off by the well-reviewed drama “The Life Ahead” and the as-yet-unscreened pop doc, “Shawn Mendes: In Wonder.”
