Wes Anderson returns to live-action in “The French Dispatch,” opening Oct. 22 from Searchlight Pictures. With the film set amid the world of a magazine, Anderson called on his go-to production designer Adam Stockhausen to build the world of fictional city Ennui-sur-Blasé and the offices of a New Yorker-esque publication.
The crew found a derelict felt factory in Angoulême, France, which turned out to be the perfect home for the sets Anderson would utilize for the film, divided into sections created as articles written by the Dispatch staff.
Stockhausen described how he built key sets.
The Newsroom
“The guiding idea was that the building was not built for them, they had moved in. So, it allowed the architecture to be mismatched. We had this image of a beautiful newsroom, a regional office of the Associated Press in Paris. It had this arched window that we loved and it also had this...

The 1971 Attica prison rebellion remains a little-known part of American history, and for the wrong reasons, says veteran documentary maker Stanley Nelson.
Most accounts of the United States’ biggest-ever prison uprising portray armed police and guards brutally retaking a correctional facility in New York State from Black and Latino rioters as they held prison guards and civilians hostage.
But Nelson, who is seeing his latest film, Showtime’s Attica, premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, has uncovered rare footage and the recollections of prisoners present at that famous rebellion to put that Black American experience at the center of the ...

The Attica Prison riot, immortalized by Al Pacino’s rebellious refrain in Sidney Lumet’s “Dog Day Afternoon,” became a rallying cry against overzealous policing. Yet with the death of each participant, the exact events at Attica, the largest prison rebellion in US history, have begun to fade in the unforgiving ether of time. In “Attica,” co-directors Stanley Nelson (“The Murder Of Emmett Till”) and Traci A. Curry interview the remaining survivors: the former inmates and the family of the now-deceased prison guards to recall an incident during which self-respect was demanded but tragedy soon followed.
The uprising occurred September 9, 1971 on the grounds of the inhuman prison practices used by prison officials. 1,200 inmates took over the prison, taking 42 people hostage. The conflict lasted for five days, resulting in 29 inmates and 10 hostages dead. It led to murder, created villains and heroes, and uncovered the inequities that existed between races then, and still,...

One of the most important roles a documentarian can play is to make sure that people tied to historical events, especially underreported events, are given an opportunity to share their memories while they still can. It’s the principle behind so many Ken Burns productions and the driving mission of Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation.
It’s a mission that few directors pursue with the commitment of Stanley Nelson, the prolific filmmaker behind The Murder of Emmett Till, Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple and Freedom Riders. In the 1980s, it took Stanley Nelson seven years to make “Two Dollars and a Dream: The Story of Madame C.J. Walker,” his first documentary film. It took him another seven years to make his second feature doc: “The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords.”
Once he had two films under his belt, Nelson, now 66, was on his way to becoming one of the foremost and most prolific documentary filmmakers to chronicle the Black experience in America. Nelson’s notable recent films include “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool,” “Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre,” The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” and the upcoming “Attica.”
As he forged his path, Nelson realized the desperate need for training, mentorship and other programs to open doors for filmmakers of color to allow them to have meaningful careers in media. At a time when Nelson’s Firelight Films is busier than ever with movies and docu series productions,...

The documentary awards race always begins at Sundance, where “Flee” (Neon) and “Summer of Soul” (Searchlight) broke out as Oscar frontrunners; Tribeca debuted high-profile “The Lost Leonardo” (Sony Pictures Classics) and “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” (Focus), while Todd Haynes’ “Velvet Underground” (AppleTV+) and “Val” (A24/Amazon) played well at Cannes.
Every September, the Toronto International Film Festival documentary lineup introduces more top non-fiction titles to the list of Oscar contenders — and this year, without many clear frontrunners, TIFF’s influence will be greater than ever. In the good old days when the TIFF selection was a sprawling smorgasbord, Thom Powers lead the TIFF documentary programmers through an enormous number of submissions to cull 22 selections. In the slimmed-down pandemic era, his team had to winnow TIFF Docs down to 13 features (announced so far)..

Opening TIFF Docs is the world premiere of “Attica” by Stanley Nelson, which tells the story of the 1971 Attica prison riot. Coming about as a result of the prisoners’ fight for more humane living conditions and lasting for five days, it remains the deadliest prison rebellion in U.S. history.
Wavelengths will open with “Neptune Frost” from directors and married couple Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman. Actress Gong Hyo-jin reigns supreme when it comes to romantic dramas for television, with any new series featuring her gaining a lot of momentum and fetching good ratings throughout its runtime and awards once its finished. On the silver screen though, she has consciously been trying to build a completely different image to her small screen avatar, featuring in actions films like “Hit-and-Run Squad” and thrillers like “Door Lock” and “Missing”. Likewise, actor Kim Rae-won has also had a strong presence and following in the romance genre on television but has been seen in action dramas like “The Prison” and “Gangnam Blues” on the big screen. Both of them haven’t been in a romantic feature since “You are More than Beautiful” in 2013 and “My Little Bride” in 2003 respectively. So when director Kim Han-gyul managed to sign both of them for her debut “Crazy Romance” which of course, as the title suggests,...

James Henerson, who wrote numerous episodes for three of the 1960s more fantastical sitcoms – Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie and The Flying Nun – died in his sleep June 18 at his home in Sherman Oaks. He was 84.

Dancehall maven Sean Paul and reggaeton royal J Balvin delivered an en fuego performance of their collaborative track, “Contra La Pared,” which means “Against the Wall,” during The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday.
The pair donned colorful clothing to match their lively Tainy-produced tune as they bounced along to their club-ready track, sprinkling in coordinated dance moves, which mirrored the choreography found in the song’s video. Director John Frankenheimer.
I'm often asked which, out of the over 600 interviews I've logged with Hollywood's finest, is my favorite. It's not a tough answer: John Frankenheimer.
We instantly clicked the day we met at his home in Benedict Canyon, and spent most of the afternoon talking in his den. A friendship of sorts developed over the years, with visits to his office for screenings of the old Kinescopes he directed for shows like "Playhouse 90" during his salad days in live television during the 1950s.
We hadn't spoken for nearly a year in mid-2002 when the phone rang. It was John, who spoke in what can only be described as a "stentorian bark," like a general. "Alex!" he exclaimed. "John Frankenheimer." He could sense something was amiss with me. It was. My screenwriting career had stalled. My marriage was progressing to divorce. I had hit bottom. John knew that...

Cinemax's first primetime original series, actioner Strike Back, got off to a promising start Friday, drawing 567,000 viewers for its premiere 10 Pm across Cinemax's universe of 16.7 million homes. That was Cinemax's best ratings performance in the time slot in six years, since a broadcast of Titanic in 2005. Including the 11 Pm and 12 Am repeats, Strike Back averaged 1.1 million viewers. The debut of Strike Back was on par with the 2010 premiere of Starz's Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which drew 659,000 viewers in the same Friday 10 Pm slot when available in 21.6 million homes. Of the more recent pay cable premieres, Strike Back was comparable to Showtime's Episodes and Starz's Torchwood: Miracle Day when the channels' distribution is taken into account. Here is a list of recent pay cable premieres: Meanwhile, there is promising signs for Lifetime's new drama Against the Wall following its soft start three weeks ago with 1.8 million viewers. In Week 2, the series...

Tonight there is the premiere of a new sketch comedy show, a genre I didn't realize was something people still did on the basis that those kind of shows keep failing except for "Saturday Night Live" which seems to be kept around just so people can talk about how awesome it used to be and how much it sucks now, a tradition that I'm pretty sure dates back to the second season of the show. This new show, "In the Flow with Affion Crockett" loses points immediately because that's a dumb name and things only go downhill from there as you find out that the titular Crockett got his start on "Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'N Out." I'm slightly bewildered as to how a bit player on an MTV series now has his own show on Fox but I guess that's why I'm not a TV executive. Here's your Sunday night TV:

This Sunday offers a nice variety of shows that absolutely no one was asking for. We have the premiere of "Hillbilly Handfishin'" which is actually about the technique of catching catfish that I always thought was called "noodling" but I guess that might be a somewhat confusing title. Also, where I hail from "hillbilly" is considered a pejorative term. Maybe Animal Planet is trying to turn that around. Also tonight we have a "Behind the Music" on Adam Lambert, a young man whose entire career has taken place in view of a television camera, that show where people air their relationship's dirty laundry on TV, that show with 'addiction' in the title that isn't really about actual addictions, and several other shows that seem to exist only to piss me and other people capable of thought off. I'm just a basket full of goddamn rainbows tonight. Here's your Sunday night...

From the break-out alien sensation Falling Skies to the addictive Teen Wolf to teenage crushes on The Nine Lives Of Chloe King to the creepy medical mysteries of Torchwood, no matter what one could possibly be looking for, this summer had it on TV. It is said that ‘it is good to be king.’ But on TV, it is better to be the most talked about summer hits of the season. The following is a quick round up of shows that you may already be watching, but if you have not yet discovered these shows, you are invited to check them out and become as enamored as everyone else.

Lifetime didn't get a lot of traction with the debut of new series Against the Wall last night. The cop/family drama, which drew largely positive reviews, drew 1.8 million viewers at 10 Pm; 638,000 of them were in the women 25-54 demographic. That was on par with the recent premiere of Lifetime's other new scripted series, The Protector, which opened its soft freshman run with 1.9 million viewers last month. But Against the Wall showed far better lead-in retention, holding onto 86% of the audience of Drop Dead Diva (2.1 million). The Protector debut held onto 50% of its lead-in, Army Wives.

Today, Lifetime unveiled their plans for programming for the 2011-12 season. Though they have almost a dozen new reality TV series in the works, the cable channel is also continuing to produce original scripted series as well. In addition to two new shows -- The Protector and Against the Wall -- they've also announced the renewal of Army Wives.
Currently in its fifth season, Army Wives is the top-rated cable series among females 18-49 and reportedly attracts an average of 3.7 million total viewers each week. Though season five won't finish airing for more than a month, Lifetime has ordered another round of 13 new episodes for season six. The cable channel hasn't specified when they'll debut. Past seasons have aired at all different times of the year.
Here's the (rather long) press release from Lifetime with all of the details on their plans:...

In October of 2008, ComingSoon.net was lucky enough to visit the set of the original The Hangover , shooting outside a luxury hotel on the Las Vegas strip. Though it was impossible to predict back then the tremendous response audiences would have to the antics of Phil, Stu and Alan, there was the sense of three relatable guys taking on America's bigger-than-life Sin City. Vegas is a town built on money, lights and entertainment and promises that even the most excessive transgressions can ultimately be overlooked with a knowing wink. Flash forward nearly two years later and we're leaning against a decaying gray wall in a filthy, dimly-lit stairwell. Exclusive: Lifetime's new president and general manager Nancy Dubuc is putting her stamp on the female-centered cable network with her first scripted series orders. Lifetime has picked up to series two female-driven cop dramas, Against the Wall and Exit 19, for a launch later this year. The orders, both for 13 episodes, can't come soon enough for Lifetime, which desperately needs more original scripted programming. It is down to two scripted series - veteran Army Wives, which was renewed for a fifth season, and dramedy Drop Dead Diva, which has been picked up for a third season. The last scripted series premieres on the network were in 2009 (Diva and the short-lived comedy Sherri). Because of Lifetime's acquisition by A&E Networks, Lifetime held off on development from mid-2009, when the deal was announced, until May 1, 2010 when History president and general manager Nancy Dubuc took over as Lifetime's new president and general manager.

MTV has greenlit a series called Inbetweeners, which is another British import about teenagers who aren’t popular, but aren’t outcasts. I’ve never seen the original, so I don’t know if there are gay characters or not. Brits?
I’ve also never seen Slc Punk!, but the director, James Merendino is going to direct something called Vampire Summer Camp.
