Our look at underappreciated films of the 80s continues, as we head back to 1988...
Either in terms of ticket sales or critical acclaim, 1988 was dominated by the likes of Rain Man, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Coming To America. It was the year Bruce Willis made the jump from TV to action star with Die Hard, and became a star in the process.
It was the year Leslie Nielsen made his own jump from the small to silver screen with Police Squad spin-off The Naked Gun, which sparked a hugely popular franchise of its own. Elsewhere, the eccentric Tim Burton scored one of the biggest hits of the year with Beetlejuice, the success of which would result in the birth of Batman a year later. The Toronto After Dark Film Festival [1] is an impressive genre festival that keeps growing every year, and makes for a great warm-up to the Midnight Madness program at Tiff. This year's festival runs from August 13th to 20th and covers horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and everything in between. They've just announced their 2010 line-up, and as expected, it's a pretty cool and varied group of 16 films from around the world. Some of the noteworthy titles include the Eli Roth-produced The Last Exorcism, Neil Marshall's Centurion and the remake of I Spit on Your Grave. There's also a double shot of Japanese craziness with Robogeisha and Alien vs. Ninja, the French killer tire film Rubber, and the Closing Gala is Tom Six's now infamous The Human Centipede. For the full schedule and ticket information, visit the official site [2]. I've included the list of films after the jump. The Last Lovecraft (Dir.

With the festival just over two weeks away, the 2010 edition of Toronto After Dark has just announced its horror-heavy lineup of titles. And though I'm no longer involved in the festival I've got to say it's a good one.
What will audiences get? How about The Last Lovecraft, Doghouse, Evil In The Time Of Heroes, Robogeisha, Alien Vs Ninja, The Last Exorcism, Phobia 2, Cargo, Centurion, Heartless, Black Death, I Spit On Your Grave, All About Evil, High School, Rubber and The Human Centipede?
Not bad at all ... tickets and passes are on sale now.

You might have noticed the coverage of this years ultra-sized Fantasia film festival in the Reviews and Interviews column of the site from a number of contributors taking in the festival: Mack, Shelagh, Peter, Todd, and myself, as well as a plethora of other Twitch writers hither and yon. Covering a festival of this size is a massive undertaking and I hope you enjoyed all the updates, interviews, and reviews. Rest assured there are still a few more to come. As Fantasia winds down with a screening of Metropolis Extended Edition and full orchestra, it seems to have been a raging success this year across the board. The festival announced its Jury and Audience awards, and they are below. It seems that the Subversive Serbia sidebar was a big hit, with controversial A Serbian Film getting one of the big audience awards.

Don’t worry. Though director Chris Smith—who made a name for himself with tense, tightly scripted genre gems Creep, Severance, and Triangle—may be tackling lofty themes of right, wrong, and the religions in between with his new film Black Death. But there’s still plenty of necromancy and “heads on sticks,” he promises. Which is great. I’ve [...]...

As we wrap up the second full week of Fantasia, I can’t help but marvel at how much more than a simple film festival it has become.
In addition to the theatrical performance Nevermore, this past week included a Miskatonic Institute Lovecraft adaptation masterclass given by Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli, a rare screening of The Devils where Ken Russell was presented with a lifetime achievement award, and a two-part live slideshow presentation from Rick Trembles and the creators of the very cool lostmyths.net. Fantasia is evolving into a three-week long series of events, appearances and live performances that just happens to also contain the best genre film festival in North America!
While most people have already seen Russell’s The Devils, seeing it on the big screen with an audience was a reminder of just how subversive and extreme this 1971 historical horror flick really is. Due to...

There are so many films out there that get many things right while misfiring in one key area. It’s the inevitable side effect of having a project that is created by a multitude of creative minds, each under specific studio and marketing pressure. If your script is great, there’s one actor who doesn’t belong. If you have a stellar action sequence here, one is miscalculated there. It’s not always a flaw of genre or of the filmmaker, but of the process.
Few directors have been able to master that process from one end of the spectrum to the other, but Christopher Nolan, in just over a decade, has proven himself to be one of the most capable minds in filmmaking. His latest, Inception, an art film in a heist film’s clothing (lavishly funded by the ample return made by The Dark Knight) is arguably his finest hour yet.

Well, the UK released of Black Death shifted to avoid clashing with Season of the Witch , but at the end of the day, it was Chris Smith's period tale that came out on top. Season was bumped to an indefinite release and Death opens across the pond on June 11. Here's an exclusive clip IGN premiered in anticipation of its release. Click on the title link above for photos. Set in an apocalyptic medieval world, Smith's film is the story of a band of brothers whose quest is to hunt down a necromancer against the backdrop of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England. A young monk is sent to investigate rumors of people being brought back to life, meanwhile a mercenary arrives in the same village. Against the backdrop of the peaceful village lies a pact with the forces of...

The MacGruber soundtrack. Co-written by and starring SNL comic Will Forte, MacGruber is effectively a feature length spoof of MacGuyver; a TV show that last aired round about the time the dinosaurs were still strutting their stuff and is these days primarily known for being Patty and Selma Bouvier’s fave small screen thrill.
At least the fact that MacGruber’s satirical target is marooned in the shadow corridor where the ‘80s tipped into the ‘90s gives the former’s tie-in record a semi-legitimate excuse for adhering to the current favoured blueprint for movie soundtracks targeted at a young male demographic, namely parading a mass of ironically-selected retro radio tracks, with a few contemporary college rock stompers thrown into the mix for credibility’s sake.

If you haven't noticed already, I'm a bit of an oddball in comparison to my fellow movie writers. I didn't study film in college -- I studied European history, mixed with uneven doses of journalism and English literature. But life leads you into very strange places, and because I loved movies as much as I loved history, I'm here instead of lecturing about the Black Death. Why waste all those years, though? Why not mash all of that up and publish it? Well, that's exactly what I'll be doing with Motion History.
Every week, I'm going to take a film and discuss what is fact and what is fiction. However, I feel an approach like that can be awfully negative. Everyone knows historical accuracy has never been Hollywood's strong suit (my professors spent hours complaining about Spartacus and Gladiator). But I refuse to dismiss a film just because it's inaccurate.

20th Century Fox has reportedly acquired the screen rights for the comic book series Incognito, written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan will write the screenplay.
Incognito focuses on Zack Overkill, a super strong ex-villain who goes into witness protection after selling out his boss, The Black Death. He quickly tires of his civilian life and becomes a vigilante, inadvertently drawing the attention and ire of a vengeful Black Death.
Here’s how Brubaker described the story to Deadline,
“He’s not your typical villain and I was trying to blend the trappings of pulp, comic and noir genres,” Brubaker told me. “Zack was raised to be his world’s equivalent of a supervillain. We’ve all seen the story of a good person who goes undercover and gets corrupted. This is a bad person forced to live among regular people, and how he’s affected by that.

Given drugs to dampen his powers and a new identity thanks to the Witness Protection Program, he grows bored with this new life. However, messing with his anti-power drugs not only gives him back his abilities but also a bit of a conscious, so he decides to become a vigilante, eventually coming to the attention of The Black Death, who hasn’t [...]...

Fox have acquired the movie rights to Ed Brubaker’s superhero noir comic Incognito, according to a report on Deadline. The comic, which is written by Brubaker and drawn by Sean Phillips (Marvel Zombies), follows the exploits of a former super villain called Zack Overkill who rats out his boss – The Black Death – and enters witness protection where he becomes somewhat of a hero vigilante.
It will be interesting to see what Hollywood makes of such an anti-hero for a lead character, typically in any studio film we always have to root for the hero, however as Brubaker explains, Overkill is no hero:

Deadline has learned that Fox is developing the graphic novel Incognito into a feature film. The script is being written by Robert Schenkkan. If you like me have never read this graphic novel I have the comic synopsis for you from Wikipedia;
The comic is set in a world in which larger-than-life pulp heroes and villains have existed since the early 1800s. The original super was an escaped convict named Kenneth Lee who went by the name the Black Death. His powers came from a radioactive object which landed in New England over 200 years ago. Other notable supers include the descendants of the soldiers who were chasing him including the Doc Savage-esque "Professor Zeppelin," the Shadow-esque "Lazarus". After WWII, the Sos agency created by Zeppelin has kept most stories about the supers out of the news.

Another comic book project now in development. Deadline reports that Fox has acquired the rights to adapt Ed Brubaker's comic book series Incognito that focuses on a "ruthless villain" named Zack Overkill who goes into the witness protection program after ratting out his boss The Black Death. Incognito is one of the comics that I picked up last year when it first came out and it's a fantastic series, kind of like Max Payne in terms of its grittiness; but it's dark series with a great story about an actual villain. However, I don't think we've seen a successful modern comic book movie that's about a villain yet, have we? Will this even work? “He's not your typical villain and I was trying to blend the trappings of pulp, comic and noir genres," Brubaker told Deadline. For a while there, a day didn’t go by without some two-bit producer announcing that they had acquired some comic book that no one had ever heard of with intentions of turning it into a movie. Of course, 90% of them never came to fruition, and the whole rush to grab the next “300″ seemed to have worn off. But here’s a good idea for a movie: 20th Century Fox has announced a movie based on Ed Brubaker’s limited series “Incognito”, which certainly seems like it could very well make it onto the big screen, thanks to the presence of a studio already at its back. Deadline reports that Fox has acquired the screen rights to Brubaker’s “Incognito”, which focuses on a former supervillain name Zack Overkill who, along with his late twin brother, did very, very bad things for a superpower criminal gang led by the very deadly The Black Death.

Show me a stake and a bunch of characters muttering about witchcraft, and I start squirming like a fish on a hook
I love films in which men wear short skirts, hack at each other with swords or say things such as: "Did you know, my dear, that this golden web was spun from the beards of shellfish?" (That's an actual line from The Ten Commandments, by the way.) So when I heard Alejandro Amenábar's Agora was set in Alexandria circa 391Ad, I went galloping off to see it, expecting dumb dialogue and peplums aplenty in a sort of arthouse variation on Clash of the Titans.
Oh dear. I should have known Amenábar was too smart to wallow in classical kitsch. Instead of laughing my ass off, I spent most of the film peeking through my fingers and whimpering. At one point I got so upset I accidentally stabbed...
I love films in which men wear short skirts, hack at each other with swords or say things such as: "Did you know, my dear, that this golden web was spun from the beards of shellfish?" Cannes -- Starz is teaming with Ben Silverman's production and distribution outfit Electus to co-develop and co-finance two new series for the U.S. pay player: the medieval period drama "William the Conqueror" and a modern-day action thriller, "Peace Keeping."
Starz chairman and CEO Chris Albrecht announced the two new projects during his Miptv keynote speech Monday, saying they exemplified the kind of internationally-packaged productions Starz would be pursuing in the future.
"William the Conqueror" focuses on the famous French ruler who, in 1066, led the last successful invasion of the British Isles. Pierre Morel, the French-born director of "Taken" (2008) and "From Paris With Love," will take the creative lead on the project and will likely direct the pilot as well as overseeing development of the entire series. Albrecht said "William" would look at the period "just before and just after" the 1066 invasion.

Word reaches us, via Deadline Hollywood, that Summit Entertainment, the reigning king of the vampire and werewolf movie, are already looking for a new franchise to replace Twilight once that series concludes. What could replace such a well loved franchise as Twilight? (please note the sarcasm in that last statement) Well Summit are looking to Cory Goodman’s recent pitch The Last Witch Hunter and have paid a huge sixfigure sum for the rights!
The Last Witch Hunter sees the witch hunter of the title battling to stop witches and warlocks from all kinds of nefarious black magic deeds… Not the most complicated of plots really. Apparently Goodman’s pitch has attracted the attention of Timur Bekmambetov, director of Nightwatch/Daywatch and Wanted, and he’s already lined up to produce.
It seems that witches may be the latest vogue in Hollywood what with this and Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel...

I once skated with Torvill & Dean. They dragged me across the ice like a fingernail on a blackboard
I dislike, no, I loathe, sport. Perhaps it's because I was lapped by everyone in the 800m at sports day in 1986, an event I still awake howling about, thinking, if only I had had more . . . legs? Perhaps it is because I find the idea of people caring how quickly a ball moves from one piece of earth to another, and who put it there, at best moronic and, at worst, The End.
When I ponder sport, I imagine aliens hovering over the planet on World Cup final day and then flying away, deciding we are too stupid even to eat.
So, when I heard the Red Arrows flying across London to celebrate the fact we "got" the 2012 Olympics, I sort of hoped it was a nuclear strike. Don't fill London with fitness...

First Look Studios has provided Bloody Disgusting with the brand new trailer and a bunch of stills (one featuring not one, but two Melissa Georges. Oh, the dirty thoughts) from Chris Smith's latest thriller Triangle, which arrives on Blu-ray and DVD February 2. Triangle, from the director of Severance, Creep and the forthcoming Black Death, is a gripping psychological thriller starring Melissa George (30 Days of Night, Amityville Horror) as Jess, a complicated single mother who ventures out on what she thinks is a carefree day at sea. When Jess sets sail on her friend Gregs (Michael Dorman, The Secret Life Of Us) yacht with a group of friends, she cannot shake the feeling that there is something wrong. Her suspicions are realized when the yacht hits a storm in the Bermuda Triangle and the group is forced to board a passing ocean liner to get to safety. More...

St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold
Opens: 2010
Cast: Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, David Tennant, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley
Director: Oliver Parker, Barnaby Thompson
Summary: A rollercoaster-style treasure hunt for the legendary Fritton’s Gold ensues as the feisty and ever-resourceful schoolgirls of St Trinian’s face their most fearsome establishment rivals yet - the villainous Pomfrey and his sidekicks from the women-hating secret society known as AD1.
Analysis: While it didn't travel much beyond the UK, 2007's reboot of the "St Trinian's" franchise nearly doubled its £7 million production budget in sales in the UK alone - making it one of the top grossing independent British films of the past decade. Reviews were decidedly mixed but generally pretty weak at the time, so the greenlighting of a sequel surprised quite a few.
Despite a critical drubbing, the core audience of young British teenage girls seemed to be satisfied by...

Shanghai
Opens: 2010
Cast: John Cusack, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chow Yun-Fat
Director: Mikael Hafstrom
Summary: In the months leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, an American man arrives in Shanghai to find his friend recently murdered. In investigating his friend's death, he stumbles upon a secret the United States government has been keeping and falls in love in the process.
Analysis: After being granted permission to shoot in the Chinese city, the $10 million production found its permit quickly being revoked by the Government who expressed concerns about the script. The result is Bangkok and the United Kingdom standing in for the real Shanghai which seems kind of against the entire point.
Cusack himself has emphatically endorsed the project in interviews, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", but being stuck at the cash-strapped Weinstein Company means that its release plans are unsure beyond a vague promise of a limited bow around Easter.

The Unofficial List Of Important Films Of The Decade by ArtMattan Productions
Happy New Year! Here at ArtMattan Productions, we are very happy to celebrate a new decade with more challenges ahead and we are sure plenty of new emotions.
The past decade was turbulent and brought many important moments to our lives and our activities in the film industry. Just over the last two years, we released Gospel Hill, Youssou N’Dour: Return to Gorée, Maria Bethania: Music is Perfume and the controversial Made in Jamaica. Music was the thing here at ArtMattan Productions headquarters.
Theatrical releases of Independent and Foreign Language films were many and diverse all over the country, with some more exciting than others. As some companies folded, other started and the turbulence in the field was intense and sometimes very emotional.
For ArtMattan Productions, it was business as usual. Getting to release a film in theaters was a nightmare,...

While I wasn't a fan of Triangle, I do love both Severance and Creep, director Chris Smith's other two high caliber genre films. Those of you in the UK should consider yourselves lucky at Smith's Black Death opens in a theater near you on February 26th. No word on a Us release. To prep you for the theatrical run, Bloody Disgusting was provided with nearly 40 hi-res stills from the medieval flick that tells the story of a band of brothers whose quest is to hunt down a necromancer against the backdrop of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England.

The Last Airbender
Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit...

#1 James Cameron to redo “The Fantastic Voyage”
Now don’t be getting too excited because there’s no news that Cameron will direct the project but Variety does report that Cameron is producing the film and from what I can gather, the project (and a few more to follow) is an effort to make use and money from the expensive technology he spent years prepping for Avatar. It’s a great opportunity to remake this sci-fi classic but with “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” writer Shane Salerno on board to adapt the original story, I can’t say I’m all that excited.
#2 Natalie Portman starring in “Pride Prejudice and Zombies”
This seems like an odd pairing but Portman does have the looks for period drama though I’m not sure what possessed her to agree to a period piece about a man searching for love amidst a zombie outbreak. Portman...

Hippie Hippie Shake
Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.
Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence...

Georgia
Opens: 2010

Director: Renny Harlin
Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.
Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Dinner for Schmucks
Opens: July 23rd 2010
Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams
Director: Jay Roach
Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.
Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

Case 39
Opens: January 1st 2010
Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous.
