Rosie O'Donnell's Sun Comments Branded "Irresponsible" By Skin Cancer Group

Rosie O'Donnell has irked another group. The opinionated former "The View" host set off supporters of skin cancer group, Ray Festa Melanoma Foundation, for saying "exposure to the sun isn't dangerous."
The 47-year-old actress told host Rachael Ray earlier this month that she "lives to tan," and stated that one should not be afraid of exposure to the sun.
But the Ray Festa group, which aims to educate on the importance of early detection and prevention of skin cancer, thinks O'Donnell's comments are "ill-informed" and "irresponsible."
According to the New York Post, it wants the "A League Of Their Own" star to do a public service announcement and retract her statements.

Who's Going To Be The World Series Mvp? Forget A-Rod or A. J. Burnett, Give Me Willie Mays Hayes!

So the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez was last night's World Series hero, knocking a ninth-inning double for the go-ahead run and a 3-1 series lead against the Phillies. In tonight's Game 5, A. J. Burnett looks to mirror his one-run gem from last week as he takes the mound at Citizens Bank Park. With the Yanks possibly locking up the Fall Classic in a matter of hours, either of these guys could end up nabbing the series' Mvp award. Or the Phils could stage a comeback powered by Game 1 gods, Chase Utley and Cliff Lee.
Whatever happens, though, I know one thing: I detest both these teams because I am a heart-broken Mets fan (is there any other kind?). That's why when I think about ballplayers these days, I tend to think about movies. Cinema has given us some of the best and silliest sluggers and hurlers imaginable, and it is these

Top 7 Films Directed by Actors Turned Directors

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
The old joke is that all actors want to direct. Though it’s maybe not true of all, I still had plenty to choose from in making this list. The directors on this list all started life as actors, some still are, but I’d argue that they’re better known as directors. This month, two well known actresses have tried their hand at direction, Drew Barrymore with Whip It (which was a great movie, I have no idea why it did so badly) and Natalie Portman doing a segment of New York I Love You. Who knows, maybe one (or both) has a second career around the corner.
7. A Woman Under the Influence (1974)

A League of Their Own (1992)
There's no crying in baseball!
Synopsis
When WWII steals all our base-running-capable men, one junk food magnet has the foresight to realize that women can also pick up a bat and play the game. Jon Lovitz does some "acting!" and recruits a crew of women who will come together to form the four teams of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League including two sisters who form the heart of The Rockford Peaches. While they form the heart, Tom Hanks forms the gut.
Why We Love It
It is rarer and rarer that a movie like this is even made. I'd even go far to say that they don't make 'em like this anymore, but that would sound cliche, and you'd think I'd be able to come up with something more original. Well, I can't. But the point still stands. Director Penny Marshall has made a movie that's funnier than most comedies and

O'Donnell: 'I Could Have Dated Supermodel Nemcova'

Gay movie star and U.S. TV personality Rosie O'Donnell missed the chance to date a supermodel after failing to pick up love signals from Petra Nemcova when the stunner was a guest on her chat show.
The A League of Their Own star, who recently split from her wife Kelli Carpenter, insists she'd never date another celebrity - but she could have hooked up with the Czech beauty.
O'Donnell tells U.S. radio host Howard Stern her staff members made it clear that Nemcova, who has never confessed to being gay, was hitting on her - but the host was too focused on interviewing her to notice.
She says, "You would have to have a neon sign that said 'Rosie, I'm hitting on you' for me to get it... She did give me her phone number and we did talk on the phone a couple of times."
In the same interview, O'Donnell claimed she once almost romanced Angelina Jolie, but was too afraid of the actress to take up her offer of a dinner date.
She revealed, "We talked on the phone two or three times, but that was that. There was a tentative plan to have dinner that never came through. I was a little afraid of her. She's scary in a sexual kind of way."

In 1982, I remember hoisting little Mike Sopocy on my shoulders after we’d won the Little League Championship Tournament in Schaumburg, Il. In those days, baseball wasn’t just something I participated in during the summer when we were off school, it was a life - complete with its own culture, vernacular and a dedication that continues to fuel my competitive juices.
This week, professional baseball teams from 4 metropolitan cities gather in a variety of arenas to determine who will go head-to-head in the final test of baseball greatness - The World Series - an event that always unveils itself in the crisp days of October.
There’s something about baseball that drives everyone. Whether it’s using baseball-riddled colloquialisms to describe your success or failure level on a workplace task; to describe how fast time is going during an event; or even how far you are along in a whimsical teenage physical relationship,

Roller derby chick flicks aren't novel. I have fond memories from the '70s of catching endless TV replays of The Kansas City Bomber, with its vaguely kinky girl-on-girl aggression (it starred Raquel Welch, who wasn't quite an actress but knew how to get mad). So I was primed to see Whip It, the first movie directed by Drew Barrymore, with Ellen Page as a 17-year-old small-town Texas high school student (Page, with her elfin girlishness, will probably be playing 17-year-olds when she's 37), who lies about her age in order to join the Hurl Scouts, a roller derby team based in Austin. Barrymore is such a nice, sweet person that you may wonder how she could possibly have directed a movie about demon women on wheels whose primary athletic activity consists of bashing each other's bodies.
Here's how. Whip It is a nice, sweet roller derby movie. There's no edge to it,

A few weeks ago, I called Sandra Bullock's rom-com, All About Steve, part of her comeback tour. Boy, did I get that wrong.
What I didn't know at the time was that All About Steve has been collecting shelf dust for two years, because the movie's financial backers didn't know what to do with it. After Bullock's stellar box office showing in The Proposal and Bradley Cooper's surprise success in The Hangover, the good folks who brought us Miss Congeniality 2 decided to go ahead and release Steve.
It came out Friday to the worst Rotten Tomatoes ratings I have ever seen in my life.
It was late afternoon on Friday before it moved past a zero percent approval rating.
Still, Steve brought in over 13 million dollars on opening weekend (though there is no record of how many people demanded their ten bucks back after the movie was over). So,

Tank Girl star Lori Petty has been sentenced to five years' probation after pleading no contest to a charge of driving under the influence (DUI).
The 45 year old, who also played Madonna's teammate in baseball film A League of Their Own, was arrested in Venice, California in May after allegedly hitting a teenage skateboarder with her car.
She was initially charged with DUI with injury, DUI with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher with injuries, and driving without insurance, but the counts were dismissed as part of a plea deal, and the DUI charge reduced to a misdemeanour.
Petty's lawyer Blair Berk appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court last week (ends28Aug09) for the sentencing hearing.
The actress, who was not present, was also ordered to pay fines, undergo outpatient treatment for alcohol abuse and attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
The teenager she reportedly knocked down only suffered minor injuries, reports People.com.

A League Of Their Own. Clockwise from top: Senator Susan Collins, Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. There’s the annual Roll Call Congressional baseball game, in June, where Republican and Democratic members of Congress are given the chance to slug it out on the field instead of the floor; the R.N.C.-vs.-D.N.C. matchup, also in June, where national-party staffers aim to win bragging rights; and the weekly Senate and House softball leagues, where Hill workers battle it out for office pride. O'Donnell Gives Up Beer After Showdown With Son

Actress/TV presenter Rosie O'Donnell gave her kids a sober Christmas gift - she quit drinking beer.
The A League of Their Own star has revealed she stopped drinking on 1 December after her teenage son, Parker, refused to get her a beer from the refrigerator.
She says, "I was with my son, who is now 13, and I said to him, 'Park, can you get me a beer?' and he said, 'No, I don't want to.' And I said, 'Really why not?' And he says, 'Because... I think you drink too much beer."
"I said 'You know, when I was a kid - when I was 22 - I stopped drinking for, like, eight years.' He goes, 'Well, maybe you should do that again.'"
And when O'Donnell revealed she'd struggle with sobriety, her son suggested she seek help.
She tells U.S. talk show host Tyra Banks, "He said, 'There's a drunk club. I forget what it's called, but you have to, like, be really drunk to get in. I don't know if they'd let you in, but you could ask them for tips.'"
