What a Woman!
kilgore_troutsky23 January 2003
I first watched this movie in my art history class and I was very impressed with it. It's much better then the film about Artemisia directed by Agnes Merlet. This is a documentary, it is not a Hollywood movie that is based on her life. There are however many parts of the film that are acted out by Jocelyne Saint Denis and some others. Artemisia Gentileschi was a truly amazing artist and an even more amazing person and this movie does a very good job of shedding light on that. It also succeeds in showing the horrors that she had to overcome during her life, horrors which are evident in many of her paintings. Colm feore is great as usual(although some of the scenes with him are difficult to watch) and congratulations to Adrienne Clarkson for doing a great job of writing, directing and narrating this film. It's not the happiest story ever told but for those who are into her art it is a must see and for those who are not, it will perhaps get you interested in her art. This is a Canadian made film and it succeeds on many more levels than the other film about Artemisia Gentileschi because the do not get carried away in trying to glorify anything, they simply just try to tell the story of her life.
