Before I knew her as Archie Bunker's little girl Gloria on "All in the Family," I knew Sally Struthers as Rebecca Cunningham on "TaleSpin." A loving single mom and ambitious businesswoman whose outspoken personality belied her petite build, Rebecca -- aka "Becky," "Beckers," and the many other nicknames her responsibility-skirting, party-loving employee Baloo would use to refer to her -- was but one of many reasons to love the "Jungle Book"-inspired animated pulp period adventure series and Disney Afternoon staple. After years of trying (and failing) to keep the peace between her stubbornly conservative dad and her liberal, holier-than-thou husband Michael as Gloria in "All in the Family," Struthers was an expert in the art of sounding flustered, a talent that served her well on "TalepSpin."

Barbie was easily the biggest movie of the year; not only generating $1.4 billion worldwide but dominating pop culture discourse for months on end. It was a fitting conclusion for a project that had spent decades in development hell, with Sharon Stone even pitching a Barbie movie way back in the ’90s.
While speaking on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly On The Wall podcast, Sharon Stone spilled a few more details on her failed Barbie pitch. “I went to the studio to try and make Barbie in the 1990s with a producer, a friend of mine, and I had the then-ceo of Mattel on my side,” Stone said. “We got thrown out of the studio. They were like, ‘Why would you take this American icon and try to destroy it? What is wrong with you?’ I got a lecture and an escort to the door.“

Before "All in the Family" became one of the most groundbreaking sitcoms of all time, it was a non-starter with two failed pilot episodes and counting. The first, titled "Justice For All," was taped 3 years before the original show's run and featured a cast including Carol O'Conner and Jean Stapleton, who would go on to play married couple Archie and Edith Bunker in the final version of the show. The actors playing the Bunker family's daughter Edith and son-in-law Michael were different, though, played by Kelly Jean Peters ("Cagney & Lacey") and Tim McIntire ("Soap"), whose character was initially named Richard.
O'Conner explained in his memoir "I Think I'm Outta Here" that he largely rewrote the original pilot script himself, and the pilot was recorded in New York in October 1968. According to a Time Magazine 50th anniversary retrospective by Daniel S. Levy, network execs weren't pleased with the casting choices for...

There wasn't a more popular or influential (or controversial) sitcom in the 1970s than "All in the Family." Created by Norman Lear, the series was a stingingly hilarious satire of American attitudes as the country adjusted to the post-Civil Rights Movement era and coped with the increasingly unpopular Vietnam War.
The genius of "All in the Family" was Lear's ability to make every single one of his main characters behave ridiculously without becoming full-on caricatures. Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor) was an unrepentant bigot, his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton) was a well-meaning ditz, his daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers) was a work-in-progress idealist who went from dopey to fairly sharp as the series progressed, and his son-in-law Michael "Meathead" Stivic represented everything Archie hated about liberals in one preachy package. We all saw a bit of ourselves and the people we have no choice but to call family in the Bunkers, and...

In the 1995 movie "Waterworld," Kevin Costner was the draw in more ways than one. To much of the audience, he was still the glamorous movie star who had managed to pull off a blockbuster "Robin Hood" movie despite his inability to successfully nail an English accent. To others, he seemed like he might be a potential trainwreck on the verge of derailment. "Waterworld" had fallen victim to many behind-the-scenes tales of sinking sets, director fights, and Costner rewriting the script to make himself look better. Ultimately, for one reason or another, enough people were curious about the film that it turned a profit. However difficult he may have been behind the scenes, the star turned out to still have it.
Within the movie, however, the person everyone wants to see is Enola, a nine year-old girl whose back tattoo features an encoded map to the last bit of dry land on a post-climate change world.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight Canada at the world premiere of his biographical documentary “Sly,” Sylvester Stallone called himself “the last of the dinosaurs” while praising his career longevity. The “Rocky” icon was referring to the fact that he’s one of the few ’80s action stars left continuing to headline movies, which is the case with the upcoming fourth “Expendables” movie. He’s also the lead of the Paramount+ series “Tulsa King,” which has been renewed for a second season.
“You can’t be prepared for this…the longevity of this career is mind-blowing,” Stallone said. “It’s just mind-blowing because I don’t know how much longer you can wait. Society is changing, the commerciality in cinema, it’s faster. So longevity would become a premium.”
Stallone continued, “I consider myself like the last of the dinosaurs, you know what I mean? And I’m very proud of that.

In the weeks leading up to the release of Barbie last month (not to mention the SAG-AFTRA strike), actress and producer Margot Robbie revealed just how hard she had to pitch taking a chance on what was an elevated interpretation of a Barbie movie… Robbie had to also pitch why she wanted to make it a Greta Gerwig movie.
“I think my pitch in the greenlight meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie told Collider. “And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg’ — pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. After seeing political commentators spout extreme rhetoric about a mass shooting, Lola Blanc wondered: do they actually believe any of it? That question served as the creative impetus behind her brand new short film, Pruning, starring the one and only, Madeline Brewer. Talking heads like Tomi Lahren became the basis from which the rest of the film grew.
In its original inception, Pruning was not a body-horror film at all. It was a character study. Co-written with Jeremy Radin, the film examines the social and moral implications of extremist beliefs. Blanc utilizes horror elements to tell the tale of a right-wing commentator named Sami Geller (Brewer) who struggles with her conscience and being a mouthpiece for the alt-right. “We had outlined a version of it, and we were like, ‘It’s just not getting at the thing enough–the horror that this really should be capturing.’ So we dug a little deeper.

With the Sam Raimi-produced 65 now playing in theaters, genre fans are getting something we’ve been craving for years – a big budget dinosaur thriller Not part of the Jurassic Park franchise. The film’s premise of an astronaut crash landing on Earth during the age of the dinosaurs sounds exactly like something that would have hit theaters and drive-ins back in the 60s and 70s when a healthy stream of dinosaur themed B-movie fare was released.
65 seems like a perfect genre mash-up of sci-fi and survival horror. Back in 1969, another genre hybrid about dinosaurs was set loose – The Valley of Gwangi. The hook? Cowboys vs. dinosaurs. Hell, if the movie came out today I guarantee that Cowboys vs. Dinosaurs would be the title.

The NBC comedy Alf may have been something that could only happen in the ‘80s. Alf, short for Alien Life Form, was a puppet with the voice of creator Paul Fusco. His Melmac name was Gordon Shumway. Anyway, the idea of building a family sitcom around a stuffed character is something they probably wouldn’t do today. But, if you grew up on Alf or just discovered it on Peacock, Freevee, Shout TV, Crackle, Tubi, Vudu, Fubo or Roku Channel, there are a few other shows that deliver similarly oddball comedy.

For more than forty years, Steve Fitch has been photographing the American West revealing its changing vernacular landscape and vanishing roadside attractions. After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, and while teaching photography at the Asuc Studio on the Berkeley campus, Fitch began work on a project photographing the vernacular roadside of the American highway.
He received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships to aid in completing this project, one in 1973 and the second in 1975, and published the acclaimed monograph, Diesels, and Dinosaurs (1976). With Valentine’s Day just weeks away, many new romantic movies will premiere. One in particular that is worth noting is Maybe I Do. Written and directed by Michael Jacobs, a veteran of sitcoms like My Two Dads and Dinosaurs, Maybe I Do follows the story of Michelle and Allen. These two young people begin to question where their relationship will go next. They decide to invite their parents together for a family dinner. Little do they know, but all of their parents are involved in extramarital affairs with each other. It is a zany throwback to a romantic comedy and one that should appeal to all ages. Plus, it also stars Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, and Willam H. Macy, which makes this one hell of a cast.

Like many others from my generation, I grew up obsessed with gaming and paleontology. So imagine the grin on my 8-year-old face when I wandered into the videogame section of my local Blockbuster and found a title literally called “Dino Crisis”. Ignoring the back of the case (not to mention the Esrb rating), I begged my parents to rent the game and raced home to try out what I thought was going to be a fun little shooter.
Suffice to say that I couldn’t get 15 minutes into the game before turning the TV off and resigning myself to reptilian nightmares. Years later, I revisited the game with a friend and beat it all in one incredibly entertaining sitting, defeating my own childhood trauma and becoming a massive fan of Capcom’s other iconic survival horror franchise.

When Muppets creator Jim Henson died in 1990, the future of the Muppets franchise felt up in the air to its fans. At the time, Disney had already been in negotiations to purchase the Muppets, but Henson was on record with his refusal. Disney, still with a foot in the door, co-financed two Muppet feature films in the 1990s -- "The Muppet Christmas Carol" and "Muppet Treasure Island," both directed by Henson's son Brian -- which proved to audiences that the Muppets were capable of living on. Indeed, the two films provided a fascinating new premise for the Muppets: they would be stock players in adaptations of classic literature. Sadly, this tack did not play itself out, and after the not-very-good, straight-to-video "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz," that angle was abandoned.
Come now, Disney, "Muppet Midsummer Night's Dream," "Muppet Dracula," and "Muppet Moby-Dick" await.

As a journalist, I’m always uncomfortable becoming part of the story. But I was met with an abnormally high amount of online dissent several days ago, after contributing to a Variety list detailing “The Worst Series Finales of All Time.”
My sole contribution was the 1991-1994 sitcom “Dinosaurs,” a show I watched religiously as a child. The series finale — titled “Changing Nature” — aired months before my ninth birthday, and I was not equipped to handle the tonal shift compared to previous episodes. What I wrote for the list:
“Dinosaurs” was an interesting ABC sitcom experiment: What if you replicated the family vibes of “Step by Step” or “Family Matters,” but the whole cast is made up of big Jim Henson dinosaur puppets? Perfect for a child demo that would soon be scared to death by “Jurassic Park,” the four-season, 65-episode run of “Dinosaurs” delivered saccharine hijinks that could have been photocopied from “Full House.

Chicago – Intelligence goes extinct in this supremely dopey sixth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise. Not even the reunion of original stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum can counteract the law of diminishing returns and a lack of focus behind the camera.
.. as the film turns Dino after Dino into a deadening drumbeat of dull destruction.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
The film begins with Dinosaurs now roaming the earth, perching on skyscrapers and running free on the wide open prairies. I can precisely pinpoint the moment when the film lurched over the line and let me in for just how dumb it could be, and that occurs early on when writer/director Colin Trevorrow tries to top the admittedly cool sight of lead actor Chris Pratt riding a motorcycle in a pack of Velociraptors. In the latest, Pratt is on horseback roping rogue Dinosaurs like he’s on a cattle drive.

For director Colin Trevorrow, his new film Jurassic World Dominion marks the end of not one, not two, but possibly three eras for this long-running, audience-favorite franchise.
The movie, the sixth overall in the Jurassic Park/World cycle, concludes the story that began with 2015’s Jurassic World (also directed by Trevorrow) and lead actors Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. But it also puts a bow on the previous trilogy of films by bringing back original Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum for their first joint appearance since Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic. And the third era? We’ll get to that a bit later.
Trevorrow initially landed the job to direct Jurassic World in 2013 after helming just one previous feature, the tiny sci-fi indie Safety Not Guaranteed. When asked if he thought at the time that he’d be the keeper of the Jurassic flame nearly a decade later,...

If you are a human being, there is a strong likelihood that you loved dinosaurs at one point in your childhood. Maybe you stood under giant fossilized skeletons at a museum and marveled at their size. Perhaps you are a fan of the "Jurassic Park" franchise. Maybe you, like Wash in "Firefly," played with dinosaur toys when you were supposed to be working. Rob Lowe, John Owen Lowe Team for Netflix Comedy Series ‘Unstable’ With ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ Creator
Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, have teamed with Victor Fresco on the Netflix comedy series “Unstable,” Variety has learned.
The Lowes will star in the series and also co-created it with Fresco, with all three serving as executive producers. It is set in a cutting-edge biotech research company, following an introverted, socially-challenged son who goes to work for his very successful, wildly eccentric father in order to save him from disaster. It is inspired by Rob and John Owen’s social media relationship, in which John Owen often trolls his dad.
“We are very excited to be working with Victor, Rob and John Owen,” said Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s head of comedy. “The three of them – and their wildly funny, smart sensibilities – are a perfect fit for our growing slate of scripted comedies.”

When it comes to animation, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more creatively impactful duo than writers-directors-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who have delivered game-changing animation for close to two decades.
Their list of credits is huge, spanning both film and television as well as animation and live-action, including producing 2018’s groundbreaking “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which won the Oscar and Golden Globe for animated feature, among many other accolades. They also produced this year’s hit “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” out of Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix, and are involved in a revival of their celebrated, though short-lived, animated series “Clone High.” They also wrote and directed the critical darlings “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” and “The Lego Movie.” Their IMDb pages are packed with myriad projects they are either writing, producing or directing. Sometimes all three.
Successful longtime partnerships such as theirs are hard to come by in Hollywood.

Jessica Walter, an Emmy-winning actress known for her work as the stalker in Clint Eastwood’s “Play Misty for Me,” and for the TV series “Arrested Development” and “Archer,” died Wednesday in New York. She was 80.
Walter received an Emmy nomination in 2005 for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy for playing the manipulative alcoholic Lucille Bluth in the critically adored and highly influential comedy “Arrested Development.”
With the rest of the cast of “Arrested Development,” she shared three SAG Award nominations for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy, in 2005, 2006 and 2014.
20th Television said in a statement, “Jessica Walter’s spectacular turn as the devilish Lucille Bluth is one of the great comedic performances of television history, and we loved working with her as much as audiences loved her on ‘Arrested Development.’ Our hearts go out to her family and friends, particularly her daughter, and our former colleague, Brooke.

Exclusive: AMC Studios has opened a writers’ room for Moonhaven, an AI drama from writer-producer Peter Ocko. The project is being developed as part of AMC’s scripts-to-series model, which includes the commissioning of a writers’ room to develop additional material and produce backup scripts for projects the network brass are high on. In success, the projects move from the writers room straight to a series order. Ocko, who is under an overall deal with AMC Studios, would serve as showrunner if Moonhaven moves ahead as a series. Veteran producer Deb Spera has joined him as a non-writing executive producer on the project.

2020, cursed year that it was, represented the first turn of the calendar since 2009 that did not feature an entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With its list of new releases for January 2021, Disney+ is set to immediately rectify that. Not only is WandaVision the first new McU installment since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, it’s the first ever Marvel television show from Marvel Studios’ reordering under content czar Kevin Feige.
WandaVision is set to premiere on Jan. 15 and will feature two beloved McU characters Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and The Vision (Paul Bettany). As the trailers reveal, this series will find Wanda and Vis living in domestic bliss in before discovering all is not what it seems.
