Few records in the last 10 years have been as critically acclaimed as Kacey Musgraves’s fourth studio album, “Golden Hour.” The 2018 release reached new heights for the singer-songwriter, earning an impressive 89 score on Metacritic and being labeled one of the greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone. Acclaim wasn’t particularly new for Musgraves, who had received raves for her debut, “Same Trailer Different Park.” However, “Golden Hour” made an even greater impact in the popular consciousness, especially with its more pop-oriented sound. It culminated in one of the biggest honors in music: the Grammy for Album of the Year. In honor of the album’s fifth anniversary, let’s take a look back at how the win reflected some important trends that we can still see today in Grammy voting, and just how strong a contender “Golden Hour” had to be to achieve it.

Winning the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album is a huge deal. The category has been consistent in rewarding the biggest pop star of the year in most years, from two-time winners Adele and Kelly Clarkson to Harry Styles, Bruno Mars, and Taylor Swift. So it’s no surprise that one of this generation’s leading vocalists has also claimed the award: Ariana Grande, who won for her 2018 effort, “Sweetener.” Grande is a consistent nominee in the category, with all her albums except her debut receiving at least two nominations in the pop field. But what made her 2018 record the one to finally get her a long-awaited Grammy win, especially with heavy competition from previous winners like the aforementioned Swift and Clarkson?
Grande had a massive comeback in 2018. She was coming off one of the most traumatic experiences an artist could ever experience: the 2017 bombing at one of her concerts in Manchester,...

Exclusive: Camila Cabello has found her next major acting gig on the heels of Prime Video’s Cinderella. The Cuban-born pop star has closed a deal to join Jay Will, Mary J. Blige and Chiwetel Ejiofor in Rob Peace — the drama Ejiofor is directing from his own script, as his sophomore feature effort.
The film, currently in production, is based on Jeff Hobbs’ bestselling biography The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace: A Brilliant Young Man Who Left Newark for the Ivy League. It follows Robert Peace (Will), a young man who grew up in a crime-ridden section of Newark, NJ and later graduated from Yale with degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry earned on scholarship. Peace led a dual life living in the insular world of academia and as a lab researcher of cancer and infectious diseases, while at the same time making six figures from the sale of marijuana.

We already knew Camila Cabello was performing at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, February 10, but now we know she’ll take the stage in what CBS and the recording academy say will be an “explosive show opener.” She’ll be joined by J Balvin, Young Thug, Ricky Martin and Arturo Sandoval.
Cuban-American singer Cabello got her start with the girl group Fifth Harmony before striking out on her own. She received her first pair of Grammy nominations this year: Best Pop Solo Performance for “Havana” and Best Pop Album for her solo debut “Camila.” Rapper Young Thug was featured on the chart-topping recorded version of “Havana” with Cabello, but Cabello is nominated by herself for a live version of the song.

Sony Music’s Q1 earnings point to a performance in line with industry trends when it comes to streaming (revenues up 30%) and physical product sales (down 30%). Overall, Sony’s music division enjoyed an 8% or JPY12.9 billion improvement in revenue in the quarter ending June 30, reflecting stronger visual media and platform sales, including the successful mobile game app “Fate/Grand Order”.
Operating income for the Music division was up JPY32.1 billion from JPY25 billion in Q1 of 2017. The biggest decline came from physical sales, which dropped from JPY33 million to JPY22 million year-on-year. Download sales saw a slight dip, too, from JPY12.9 million to JPY10.6 million, but digital’s performance overall was offset by a rise in streaming, from JPY38.4 million to JPY51.6 million.
Also detailed in the earnings report is Sony Corp.’s completed acquisition of Emi Music Publishing from a consortium led by private equity firm Mubadala. Sony’s...

As part of a strong Sony earnings report for its 2017-18 fiscal year (which ended on March 31) the company’s music division’s revenue rose more than 12% to around $4.03 billion in Rob Stringer’s first year at the helm as CEO. Streaming revenues soared more than 37% to $1.8 billion, comprising more than 44% of the music division’s total.
Physical sales were also up, rising nearly $10 million to $1.20 billion. While the company did not break down those numbers, a source said they were driven by a strong showing in Japan, where physical sales remain strong, as well as a continued uptick in vinyl sales; physical sales overall are expected to continue their gradual downward trajectory. Download revenues continued to fall, dropping 18% to just under $450 million.
The company singled out Pink’s “Beautiful Trauma,” DJ Khaled’s “Grateful” and Camila Cabello’s “Camila” as its top-selling albums.

Camila Cabello still doesn’t know what to think about the memorable moment when Blue Ivy Carter told her parents to simmer down during Cabello’s speech at the Grammy Awards this year.
“I had a moment of insecurity,” the 20-year-old “Havana” singer revealed during a recent interview with BBC Radio 1. “I surprised myself. I was like, ‘What does that mean?’ ” she continued, adding, “Do you think she didn’t like my speech?”
The former Fifth Harmony member went on to say she actually had to stop herself from over-analyzing the moment. “I literally stopped. I was like, ‘I...

Camila Cabello has been rocking the small screen to promote her solo album Camila, which currently sits atop Billboard‘s 200 chart. Here is a roundup of the 20-year-old singer’s most memorable TV moments so far:
1. Her jam session on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The singer did a quirky fun acoustic rendition of megabit “Havana” with hip hop band The Roots and Jimmy Fallon himself, who grooved and sang to the beat.
2. Her high-glam, über-sexy performance on The Ellen Degeneres Show. Cabello sang her addictive tune “Havana” cabaret style, transforming DeGeneres’s studio into a 1950’s Cuban night club.

Camila Cabello is right where she wants to be, but the story of all the moments and events that brought her to this point is one worth knowing. The 20-year-old star just released her debut solo album Camila, and although we remember the "Havana" singer from her very beginning in The X Factor, Camila's journey truly began many years before that. The former Fifth Harmony member was born in Cojímar, Cuba to a Cuban mother and Mexican Father. Cabello and her family would divide their time between Havana and Mexico City. When she was almost seven years old, her mother told her that they were going to Disney World. "With a couple of hundred dollars, the...

This was a busy year at Tiff, where I was a juror for Fipresci, helping to award a prize for best premiere in the Discovery section. Not only did this mean that some other films had to take a back burner—sadly, I did not see Eduardo Williams’ The Human Surge—but my writing time was a bit compromised as well. Better late than never? That is for you, Gentle Reader, to decide.Austerlitz (Sergei Loznitsa, Germany)So basic in the telling—a record of several days’ worth of visitors mostly to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Oranienberg, Germany—Austerlitz is a film that in many ways exemplifies the critical theory of Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin. What is the net effect for humanity when, faced with the drive to remember the unfathomable, we employ the grossly inadequate tools at our disposal?Austerlitz takes its name from W. G.
