With six decades of acting under his belt, Harrison Ford has made works that have run the gamut of critical responses. On Rotten Tomatoes, his most critically acclaimed role is listed as the "Apocalypse Now" making-of documentary "Hearts of Darkness," a film in which he ironically doesn't actually speak or appear but which nonetheless earned universal acclaim from the review-tabulating site. His lowest-rated film? An already-forgotten 2013 thriller called "Paranoia," which just 7% of critics included on the aggregation site wrote positively about.
Many of Ford's most entertaining films lie somewhere in the middle of that wide range; they're crowd-pleasing blockbusters and cult favorites with some endearing -- and in the best cases, now legendary -- imperfections. Ask fans what their favorite Ford-starring films are and you'll get a smorgasbord of answers that fit in this category, from "Star Wars" to "Indiana Jones" to "Blade Runner" to "The Fugitive." It appears that Harrison Ford built his career upon roles that were passed on by other famous actors. Be it his breakout role as Han Solo or his adventurous hero role in Indiana Jones, Ford was not the first choice for these roles. Interestingly, he was also not the first choice for another action role that the audiences loved him for. Ford’s role as President Marshall in Air Force One was initially offered to Kevin Costner.
Harrison Ford as President James Marshall in Air Force One
Costner asked the producers to specifically give the role to the Star Wars actor when he dropped out due to his other commitments. Ford and Costner weren’t exactly best friends which made the Yellowstone actor’s move a very generous one.

Movie fans love to discover behind-the-scenes tidbits about their favorite films, and there are few movie facts more exciting than an improvised line or scene. Stories of improvisation remind us that filmmaking is a collaborative, creative process, and that sometimes the most unexpected ideas make the biggest impact.
Writers and directors lay the foundation and set the scene, while it's up to actors to make the characters their own. Take one of the most classic lines in "The Godfather," a perfect example of improvisation upon a strong foundation. The phrase "leave the gun," was written in the script, but actor Richard Castellano added the line "take the cannoli," turning it into the iconic catchphrase it is today. Clearly, Francis Ford Coppola's decision to keep that ad-lib in the final cut was the right one.

Adam Driver is an architect who can control time in the first-look clip for Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming, self-funded film, Megalopolis.
In the more-than-two-minute video, Driver’s Cesar Catilina makes his way onto the edge of a skyscraper, seemingly considering jumping. As he’s about to fully step off the building, he shouts “Time stop” and the cars below him pause at his command, and he leans back onto stable footing.
The film, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, is a Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America, according to its description.
“The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests and partisan warfare,” the logline reads. “Torn between...

The theatrical-only release of "Dune: Part Two" back in March of 2024 was an unequivocal success, both at the box office and within the cultural conversation. Even though the film is now available for digital rental and purchase, it's still playing in movie theaters and is still being talked about, debated over, and memed (the latter being the biggest bellwether for a piece of media's impact in pop culture these days).
As the old saying goes, failure is an orphan while success has many fathers. Did "Dune: Part Two" succeed solely on its own merits? Was it helped by a robust press tour, along with a buzzworthy, unintentionally raunchy popcorn bucket tie-in? Was it the fanbase of the "Dune" franchise that helped boost its popularity? Or — and this is the most pertinent question — had audiences been primed for the next chapter thanks to 2021's "Dune: Part One?"
If the answer to that last question is "Yes,...

Fears of a future where artificial intelligence overpowers flesh-and-blood humans have always been a paramount tenet of sci-fi storytelling. And when these sentient robots closely resemble human behavior and exterior appearance (as in “Blade Runner” or “AI Artificial Intelligence”), then the conundrum of whether they should be granted human dignity rather than being seen as disposable presents itself. But the closer that such a hypothetical reality feels to our present — with generative AI threatening artistic creation, for example — the less likely it seems we will ever feel compassion for these entities.
French director Jérémie Périn’s cyberpunk mystery “Mars Express” manages to further complicate our sentiments with its dense yet satisfying world-building. A gripping, heady and refreshing 2D animated take on the perils of man and machine coexisting, Périn’s first feature as a director inserts the necessary exposition in a mostly natural manner so we incrementally become aware of how this reality functions.

10. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Whenever Stanley Kubrick is involved, you know there has to be something outstanding. 2001: A Space Odyssey follows an adventure to Jupiter where the astronauts have to oppose their board computer that tries to stop them…
But more than a good movie, it’s an unforgettable visual experience, an experiment in bizarre.
You can watch 2001: A Space Odyssey on Max, Netflix, and Prime Video.
9. Once Upon A Time In America (1984)
Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In America isn’t special due to its captivating story of a small-time criminal turned mafia kingpin. The movie's sensational visuals could have been less impressive in our eyes, too — if not for the fact that in 1984, there was no CGI, and its stunning shots were all done with practical effects alone.

Science fiction was one of the first genres in the history of cinema, and it has undergone the most dramatic changes in its more than one hundred years of existence.
By making the leap from literature to film in the 1900s, sci-fi was able to greatly expand its reach. What began as a flight of fancy on paper blossomed in front of the camera, and the genre began to explore new, exciting subgenres on the screen. Dozens of popular novels were adapted and given visual substance.
But it wasn't just adaptations that pushed directors to new horizons – many of their stories reflected everyday life through a futuristic prism. Films like Planet of the Apes and Blade Runner influenced the development of science fiction as a genre with its own tropes, traits, and cinematic language.

Said to be a mix of Top Gun and Back To The Future, T-Minus will be an expensive-sounding action thriller based on a Philip K Dick short story. Michael B Jordan will co-produce.
Michael B Jordan, who’s currently working with Ryan Coogler on his currently untitled horror movie, now has another major project in the works. Called T-Minus, it’ll be produced by Jordan through his company, Outlier Society, in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios.
The script will be co-written by Drew Pearce, who wrote the upcoming The Fall Guy, and Nick Cuse, writer of TV’s Watchmen and Masters Of The Air.
What’s really intriguing about T-Minus – for this writer at least – is that it’s based on a Philip K Dick short story, A Little Something For Us Tempunauts.
First published in 1974, it’s about three time travellers (the Tempunauts of the title) whose mission to...

Any prequel to the Alien series would face a challenge. If we forget for a moment that Alien 3 ever happened, the first two films in the series were absolute classics. They are as influential today as they were when they were first released in 1979 and 1986, respectively.
The main problem with 2017's Alien: Covenant was a departure from what made those two movies so good.
Too much tech, not enough tension
Alien and Aliens are big movies that benefited from an almost B-movie feel. Of course, filmmaking was very different when Ridley Scott's directing career was in its infancy, but you get the sense that he wasn't just working within constraints – he really understood his craft.
Alien: Covenant embraced CGI to such an extent that it often felt like it was so far removed from the originals that it was a different franchise. You certainly wouldn't have guessed that...

Everyone knows Sir Ridley Scott as the director of Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator. These films have long since become modern classics, beloved by millions of viewers around the world.
However, the film industry did not immediately recognize the talents of the stubborn Brit, who was used to controlling every second of the filmmaking process. It took the world several decades to recognize the genius of his directorial discoveries.
Ridley Scott's films have one thing in common – fame and recognition come to them only with time. In the extensive filmography of the British director there are a number of unnoticed films, including outright failures. But above all, there are movies whose potential was not recognized by the audience.

From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

Having directed the brilliant Arrival (2015), Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and the two Dune movies (2021 and 2024), Denis Villeneuve has already inscribed his name in cinematic history as the acclaimed sci-fi filmmaker.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
It comes as no surprise that this iconic Old Hollywood masterpiece is in Villeneuve’s list. According to his own admission, Kubrick’s epic space opera was his first "cinematic shock" that became his most favorite movie, inspiring him for his own science fiction works.

[Editor’s Note: this list was originally published in November 2017. It has since been updated with Snyder’s further work to coincide with the release of “Rebel Moon — Part Two.”]
Zack Snyder is possibly the most polarizing mainstream filmmaker of the 21st century. His name alone is enough to launch a thousand angry tweets, and the most passionate writing about his work is exclusively found in the comment sections of websites or as social media replies. Snyder’s critics really seem to hate him, and Snyder’s fans really seem to hate his critics. At this point, a Marvel / DC movie crossover might be a lot more plausible than finding any sort of common ground between those two camps. Is Snyder a master or a hack? A misunderstood myth-maker, or a meathead with a movie camera?
One thing we can say for sure is that no contemporary auteur has more awesomely investigated what it means to be a hero in a fallen world. The Pasadena native...

It's been more than two decades since Naoki Urasawa started publishing a manga based on a story arc from Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy. Urasawa changed many details in his reinterpretation, but his new version of the story has been capturing the public imagination since its first issue in 2003.

Being one of the most important figures of New Hollywood and the most commercially successful director in history, Steven Spielberg has prominently inscribed his name in history. Movie recommendations of the pioneer of the modern blockbuster or even the whole 21st century’s cinema definitely deserve our close attention.
Speaking of one classic feature, the filmmaker stated it meant everything to him, calling it “one of the great movies ever made”, while many critics claim it’s the best film ever made in cinematic history. Indeed, its impact on the industry is hard to overestimate.
The 1941 drama that we’re talking about focuses on the rises and falls of a big publishing magnate, the character based on the renowned media barons and tycoons of that time and partially of the movie screenwriters' own real-life experiences. And yes, you guessed it right: the movie in question is Citizen Kane.

In a social media post on X, which is the platform formerly known as Twitter, Isenberg recounted how he met a 24-year-old “single guy” who told him he spends $10,000 a month on “AI girlfriends.” The anonymous man even described his A.I. “dating apps” as comfort at the end of the day.
“The market cap for Match Group is $9B,” Isenberg wrote. “Someone will build the AI-version of Match Group and make $1B+.” While Isenberg’s own personal feelings about that prospect remain ambiguous, the impact of...

People over the years have mostly associated Weller with his iconic role of Alex Murphy in 1987’s RoboCop. The thrilling and thought-provoking sci-fi flick became a groundbreaking yet misunderstood film at the time, similar to Blade Runner. However, director Paul Verhoeven initially felt the script was too alien to him and far removed from his previous works.

Jaws, The Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner, Goodfellas and more are getting 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Steelbooks in the UK.
The Film Vault range of physical media releases has previously seen much-loved films presented in deluxe packaging, with assorted extra materials in the box. They’re on the pricey side, but there’s no denying the love that’s gone into putting them together.
Now, a slightly more economic range of reissues for the seven films in the range so far is incoming, which sees the same movies now arriving in fresh Steelbook packaging. The distinctive artwork from the earlier releases is included, and there’s brand new art on the reverse of each as well. The artwork has been designed by Matt Ferguson and Florey of Vice Press.

In the early days of home video, people hardly ever asked questions like, “Which version should I watch?” These days, skilled editors can make post-production edit changes to their films, sometimes producing multiple ‘directors’ versions of the same motion picture. Examples of such editors include Michael Mann, Oliver Stone, and Ridley Scott, (who has director’s cuts of Kingdom of Heaven and Blade Runner).
However, the conventional group of director’s cut enthusiasts appear to be amateurs, in contrast to Zack Snyder. His numerous extended cuts offer a more intimate glimpse into his techniques and obsessions than those of any other director.
Needless to say, most casual moviegoers these days most likely associate Zack Snyder’s Justice League with the term ‘director’s cut’. Well, we can’t deny that in recent years, Snyder, 58, has gained a reputation for releasing extended cuts of his films, prompting many to question how far artistic freedom goes.

Max is looking for the universe in which his rescuer brother Leon survives in this British animation, but some clever variations aside, it’s slow going
It’s been a two-way street: there are movie spin-offs of video games, and vice versa. Now comes this British animation, made at the same time as a companion game due out next year (and animated using the technology behind Fortnite). Like Blade Runner, it’s set in a futuristic American city with impossibly tall skyscrapers. Like the cult Japanese anime Akira, the storyline concerns experiments on children. Here they’re being treated at a research facility owned by an evil mega-corp where AI security guards with hi-tech machine guns keep out the protesters.
One of the kids inside is Max, a fragile boy with huge sad green eyes (voiced by Cade Tropeano). Max has been having violent dreams in which his much older brother,...

This year’s edition of the festival, Best of Best, will show a collection of 28 award-winning short films across five strands offering dystopian visions and ideological bite
With the EU recently passing the world’s first artificial intelligence law, this year’s trawl of European shorts from cultural organisation Eunic London doesn’t miss a trick by dwelling on matters algorithmic in much of its first section, Smile You’re on Camera – most prominently the ongoing wrangle between tech and labour in the workplace. It’s the one overtly topical strand alongside four others (Hard Decisions; People on the Precipice; Psychodrama; and the kids’ animation section Why’s the Sky Blue?) that stick to the more abstract themes into which Eunic typically packages up Europe’s film-making grassroots.

With the recent surge in popularity of Denis Villeneuve, the filmmaker behind the creation of the blockbuster Dune: Part Two, cine-goers and film aficionados have explored the vast catalog of his films that he made in the past.
Thus, with so much more exposure to his early and previous works, different fans have different opinions about which of his creations should be on the top.

Last week, Denzel Washington's thriller "The Little Things" topped the Netflix charts after having originally debuted in 2021 and failing to make much of an impact. It was a nice little post-release bump for the film, which, though it wasn't all that well received initially, had grand ambitions to do something different with the crime thriller genre by providing no actual answers to its central mystery. Now, a week later, "The Little Things" is maintaining its dominance on the Netflix charts. But all the while Denzel has been reigning supreme, two other films have been threatening him to usurp him.
Back in 2017, director M. Night Shyamalan debuted "Split," a self-financed stealth sequel to his 2000 film "Unbreakable." Rather than marketing the film as such, he kept the revelation that this was a follow-up to his earlier, Bruce Willis-led thriller, under wraps. Even Universal didn't know about the twist ending before seeing the movie,...

Dune: Part Two is a film directed by Denis Villeneuve based on the novel by Frank Herbert. It stars Timothée Chalamet and features performances by Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem.
Denis Villeneuve is back, dazzling us with this desert spectacle about a war between civilizations, where the visual elements again become the main lure.
Dune: Part Two is a three-part story narrated across several worlds and characters, leading young Atreides to accept the prophecy that transforms him into a messiah as a war rages in every corner of the known universe.
These films, with such eye-catching visual elements that they almost overshadow everything else, tend to sideline the story, over-burdens the characters, and stories often become secondary because what matters is what you see.

In 1979, Ridley Scott unleashed the science fiction classic "Alien" upon audiences and unwittingly kickstarted a lucrative franchise comprised of seven sequels and an assortment of books, comics, and video games. In August 2024, Fede Álvarez plans to release "Alien: Romulus," which will hopefully push the series in a creative new direction, delivering more Xenomorph horror action for audiences to enjoy.
The "Alien" franchise has amassed $1.6 billion at the global box office, despite more than a few bumps. Films such as David Fincher's "Alien 3" and Scott's own "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" divided audiences with their strange methodology. In contrast, the "Alien vs Predator" films never amounted to more than cynical cash grabs. These sequels/prequels also retconned important lore or added new details to the Xenomorph that do not jibe with previously established material, leaving fans scrambling to make sense of the "Alien" timeline. Making games is no layman’s task, but making music for games has to be equally applauded. After all, what would a game be without all the Bgm, which makes the entire gaming experience more enhanced and surreal?
Jack Wall, the composer of the first two Mass Effect games and the four Call of Duty Black Ops games, recently revealed the nitty-gritty behind composing music for games, via an interview. During the interview, he spoke about what was it like to compose music for Mass Effect and Call of Duty, and the kind of challenges he faced.

From Pixar making us cry our hearts out to Studio Ghibli leaving us depressed with Grave of the Fireflies, the medium of animation is no stranger to tugging at one’s heartstrings. And similar is the case with Bruce Timm’s magnum opus, responsible for the definitive version of Batman. While full of action, which is expected from the superhero genre, Batman: The Animated Series doesn’t shy away from pulling one’s heartstrings during the show’s more emotional bits.
Reflecting on such scenes, the animator recalled the time he was sobbing like a baby during one of the most gut-wrenching scenes in the show.

Amidst displaying the brooding vigilante at its top, Btas also succeeds in leaving fans on the verge of tears, most apparent with Heart of Ice, which changed how fans perceived Mr. Freeze.

Video games have gotten miles better than they used to be back in the 80s or 90s. Of course, this makes sense, given the fact that games have only gotten more narrative-heavy over the years. The upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive Stellar Blade falls into the same category: a narrative-heavy action game. It appears the game’s director put a lot of effort into making this game a well-written masterpiece.
While Stellar Blade has yet to launch, it is already surrounded by controversy about its protagonist’s design. People don’t care for its combat; they don’t care about its visuals, but they care a lot about how this character looks. Other than that, some people have also decided to compare it to one of the best-written games in recent history; the director says they are not very alike.

As much anticipation there was for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, once it was revealed that there was a four-hour cut, hype rushed like a cavalry. The theatrical cut — which clocked in at just under two hours and 40 minutes — may not have been the full-blown epic that we hoped for but we still wanted that four-hour version. But we may need to rein it in because word now is that there is no immediate plan to release it after all.
According to World of Reel, Apple said that the director’s cut of Napoleon would “not be made available any time soon.” If definitely true, this would be a huge disappointment, especially since Ridley Scott himself confirmed not only its existence but its release, saying last year, “I’m working on it. On April 5, Roddenberry Entertainment, the company behind the “Star Trek” universe, launches a brand new sci-fi podcast called “Does It Fly?” that answers one of the biggest questions sci-fi geeks love to ponder: Could the technology we love in out-there science fiction franchises someday exist in real life?

The game’s director, Kim Hyung-tae, previously discussed various games that inspired Stellar Blade, particularly, Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Although the games are slightly different, Hyung-tae explained that Miyazaki’s video game was one of the main inspirations behind the themes of his latest game.

When you think about improvisation in movies, you might initially think of comedies — the kind that come with blooper reels that are often just as good as the movie itself. We've all spent an inordinate amount of time watching and rewatching "The Office" bloopers or marveling at the unhinged absurdity of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly's extemporaneous efforts in the "Step Brothers" blooper reel. Heck, you might even think of Chris Hemsworth improvising Thor lines.
But improv isn't, of course, just a comedic tool. Throughout the history of cinema, actors have embraced spontaneity to add an extra level of realism to their performances. Just look at Jack Nicholson and that famous "Here's Johnny" line from "The Shining." Then, there's Harrison Ford, who improvised one particular Indiana Jones moment in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," adding a touch of levity to the action-adventure classic.
But just a year later,...

James Gunn’s authority as the co-ceo of DC Studios has been under questioning by many fans ever since it was announced. Some do not think that he is suited for the role, while others do not like the direction he is taking the franchise. However, bit by bit, he has been proving himself to be capable of the role.

After the immense success of The Suicide Squad as well as his work with the MCU, the director assumed the role alongside Peter Safran. Since then, he has been enforcing his power one step at a time, with the biggest jump being through Superman: Legacy, which is becoming one of the most anticipated films from the franchise.

The idea of robots taking control of our world is one that has provided many storylines to multiple franchises over the years. Even major comic franchises like Marvel and DC have also written storylines and characters on these storylines as we have witnessed in many series and movies over the years.

Once in Batman: The Animated Series, a duplicate robot of the Caped Crusader appeared in the series and tried to create more of his kind to take over the world. The episode seemed to resemble the plot of the 1982 science fiction film, Blade Runner.

Over the years, we have seen many versions of Batman in animated series, live actions, and video games. However, not many of them have been able to make an impact as huge as Batman: The Animated Series...

The Story: It is the future (like say – 1989). Robots are now commonplace, being used for everything from manual labor to childcare. But, robots go bad and when they do, the LAPD calls in Sgt. Jack R. Ramsay (Tom Selleck), an expert in so-called “Runaways”. When a madman (Gene Simmons) invents a microchip that turns all robots into runaways, Ramsay, and his new partner (Cynthia Rhodes) must put a stop to his evil plan – the fate of the world just may depend on it! Oh, and also Ramsay is afraid of heights. Trust me, that’s important.
The Players: Starring: Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes, Kirstie Alley, G. W. Bailey and Gene Simmons. Written and directed by Michael Crichton.
The History: While most famous for his novels, Michael Crichton actually had a decent Hollywood career as a director, having a couple of solid hits under his belt by the time 1984 rolled around.
