The Taiwan International Documentary Festival (Tidf) is delighted to reveal the recipient of the prestigious “Outstanding Contribution Award” for its 14th edition: the revered 80-year-old master, Chang Chao-tang. This accolade recognizes Chang's profound and lasting contributions to the landscape of documentary filmmaking in Taiwan. Additionally, Tidf pays homage to the late ethnographic documentary pioneer Hu Tai-li, who passed away in 2022, through the introduction of a “Special Commemoration,” a first for the festival.
The curatorial team at Tidf has selected two masterpieces by Chang Chao-tang, The Boat-Burning Festival (1980) and Homage to Chen-Da (2000), to open the 14th iteration of the festival. The former intimately captures the enigmatic ritual of Burning the King Boat in Sucuo Village, Tainan County. Devoid of any live sound but accompanied by progressive folk music, this film is considered as one of the earliest experimental and poetic documentaries in Taiwan. Homage...

The title character of “Comandante,” Salvatore Todaro (Pierfrancesco Favino), is a submarine commander in the Italian Royal Navy who has a different spirit from the military machos we tend to encounter in movies. He’s certainly tough enough — a bruiser with a dark edge. “Comandante” is set during the early days of World War II (September and October 1940), and as Salvatore leads the crew of the Cappellini, an iron hulk of an underwater vessel equipped with a dozen torpedoes and a pair of machine guns, he’s not shy about his dedication to blowing up his enemies.
But he’s also a saddened romantic warrior with the heart of a poet. As the men prepare to board the sub, Salvatore assembles them for a pep talk, and his look is striking: the double-breasted brown leather coat, the coiffed hair and thick goatee, the gleam of burning-eyed fatalism. Favino resembles a...

A 73m x 7m submarine was always going to be a left-field substitute for A-lister Zendaya after Luca Guadagnino’s hotly anticipated tennis movie Challengers was pulled from the Venice Film Festival’s prestigious opening-night slot. And although the gargantuan Cappellini is a formidable presence in Edoardo De Angelis’s 1940-set war drama, Comandante seems woefully out of its depth as a curtain-raiser to a festival still reckoning with the effects of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Held together by a very strong performance by Pierfrancesco Favino as sub commander Salvatore Todaro, De Angelis’ film takes a long time to set sail, beginning with a strange prologue in which we see Todaro plunging into the sea. This is his first brush with death, and it leaves him severely disabled, being forced to wear a back brace and prescribed serious doses of morphine. “I like you disabled,” says his wife, Rina...

According to the Book of Exodus, the Ark of the Covenant was built by Moses during his trip to Mount Sinai as a carrier for the original stone tablet onto which he carved the original Ten Commandments as decreed by God. The Ark was carried by the Israelites on their 40-year trek through the desert and was used in multiple Jewish rites over the course of many, many years. It was a powerful vessel blessed by God and His Chosen People. There are more than 400 references to the Ark of the Covenant in the Bible. So it was more than just a movie McGuffin in Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark." It was a tool of divine retribution used by a Jewish filmmaker to slaughter Nazis. What a satisfying ending.

Sky Deutschland, the German arm of Comcast-owned European pay-tv group Sky, is shutting down its scripted originals division, Sky unveiled Thursday.
Sky Deutschland head Devesh Raj informed local staff early Thursday morning that the network will be wrapping up its originals department and shutting things down entirely next year. Series currently in production, such as season four of hit submarine drama Das Boot, will finish filming, but there will be no new commissions. Projects in development will be put into turnaround.
Sky Deutschland came late to the originals business, commissioning its first high-end series, Babylon Berlin, in 2015. Given today’s news, it’s unclear if that award-winning drama, whose fourth season airs this fall, will continue. Public broadcaster Ard is the main commissioning network on Babylon Berlin and the series has sold worldwide, including to Netflix in the U.S., but Sky’s exit will leave a major hole...

‘Babylon Berlin’ Broadcaster Sky Deutschland to Pull Out of Scripted Originals From 2024 (Exclusive)
Sky Deutschland, the German arm of Comcast-owned pay-tv operator Sky, is pulling out of scripted originals from 2024, Variety can reveal.
Staff were notified of the surprise move by Sky Deutschland boss Devesh Raj on Thursday morning, local time. Variety understands that the entire scripted originals team will eventually be disbanded, though shows that have already been commissioned and are in production, such as post-apocalypse drama “Helgoland 513″ and “Das Boot” Season 4, will finish filming. Any projects in development will be “put into turnaround,” as per another internal note from Sky Studios CEO Cécile Frot-Coutaz, also seen by Variety.
The most high-profile casualty of the strategy shift will undoubtedly be period police thriller “Babylon Berlin,” which is critically acclaimed and aired its fourth season in the fall. Fans have been expecting a fifth season, but Variety understands that the neo-noir — which isn’t currently in production — has been canceled by Sky...

Ray Stevenson, the actor behind memorable roles in Marvel’s Thor series, Rrr, Divergent, Vikings, and more, died Sunday in Italy. Details related to Stevenson’s passing are developing. However, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica says he was hospitalized on the island of Ischia while in production on the film Cassino on Ischia, directed by Frank Ciota.
In April, Stevenson embraced fans at Star Wars Celebration. In the upcoming Star Wars series Ahsoka, he plays one of the primary antagonists, Baylan Skoll. Lucasfilm unveiled a brand new trailer for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” during the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase at the Star Wars Celebration convention in London on Friday.
Described as the final film in the franchise, “Indiana Jones 5” finds Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role as the legendary hero archaeologist grapples with a new era (1969) and new characters (Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays his goddaughter Helena Shaw). The globe-trotting trek will take Indy to Morocco and Sicily. Glasgow serves as the location for a 1969 moon landing parade.
This new trailer plays on the notion that Indy is ready to retire, but he’s pulled back into one last adventure, this time against an old foe. Yes indeed, Nazis are the bad guys once more, but the device at the center of the story — the Dial of Destiny — appears to potentially allow Mads Mikkelsen’s baddie to go back in time...

War is a living nightmare, wreaking its destruction on innocent lives and civilizations. It casts deep wounds that shape our history, present circumstances, and potential prospects for the future.
War has been a central theme in all of human history since its inception. It inspires both captivation and terror, with stories of bravery, resilience, and courage, as well as violence and death. It is the peak of danger – where any semblance of safety or security ceases to exist for those who fight. All that remains are humanity’s yearning for survival against insurmountable odds.
Hollywood has no shortage of war films meant to both awe and educate. Some promote the best humanity can offer as people come together for a common cause. Others reveal the horrific truth behind conflict’s brutality and man’s capacity for harm on an unimaginable scale.

Brian Roberts, chairman and CEO of U.S. media giant Comcast, is traditionally a buyer and a builder, not a pump-and-dumper. Over the years, he has grown Comcast through bold M&a moves, snatching up NBCUniversal in 2011, DreamWorks Animation in 2016, and, in the company’s most recent mega-buy, paying around $39 billion for European pay-tv giant Sky, which operates three language divisions: English (for the U.K. and Ireland), German (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and Italian.
With every deal, the goal was always to make Comcast bigger and better able to respond to or lead industry trends. Not all acquisition plans worked out. Roberts tried, unsuccessfully, to buy the Walt Disney Co. and, later, former Sky owner 21st Century Fox. Disney, of course, ended up snatching up large parts of Fox in 2018. Having directed only four films over the last quarter-century, we’re not holding our breath when we may see the next feature from Scottish director Lynne Ramsay. However, with a handful of projects in development, we’ve been curious which one she’ll focus her attention on in the coming years. Courtesy of a masterclass at Doha Film Institute’s Qumra 2023, she’s now provided some updates on a quarter of projects in the hopper.
As reported by Screen Daily, Ramsay says first up she hopes to shoot Stone Mattress––an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 2011 short story for The New Yorker that will star Julianne Moore and Sandra Oh––starting this year. Backed by Amazon and adapted by Ramsay with Tom Townend, the thriller is set on an Arctic cruise ship. “It’s such a challenge, that film because it’s a boat in the Arctic – it [needs] all the elements aligning,...

A revolutionary, an alien, an actor in drag, a missing journalist and an alcoholic lawyer. It was a mixed bag of Best Picture nominees at the 55th Academy Awards ceremony, but in the end there weren’t a lot of surprises. The epic film with the most nominations won the most awards; however, a fantasy film that garnered a surprising nine nominations won the hearts of millions and cemented a place in film history. The Best Director and three of the four acting winners were first-time nominees, and the fourth acting winner was on a record-setting streak that would last decades, while a couple nominees were on losing streaks. The hosts were also a bit of a mixed bag, with Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore, Richard Pryor and Walter Matthau joining forces to steer the event. Let’s flashback 40 years to the ceremony on April 11, 1983.

What do the 55th annual Academy Awards which took place April 11, 1983 have in common with the upcoming 95th Oscars?
Steven Spielberg and John Williams.
Back in 1983, Spielberg’s beloved “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” was nominated for nine Academy Awards including film, director and score. This year, the 76-year-old Spielberg and Williams, 91, are both nominated for “The Fabelmans.” The filmmaker’s semi-autobiographical drama is in contention for eight Academy Awards including film, director, screenplay and score.
The 55th Oscars made history with Ben Kingsley becoming the first actor of Indian descent to win the best actor Oscar for his extraordinary portrayal of “Gandhi” while Louis Gossett Jr. become the first black actor to win in the supporting category with his iconic turn as tough-nosed D.I. in “An Officer and a Gentleman.” This year, history could be made again in the best actress category. Playing Golda Meir, says Helen Mirren, was not unlike playing the queen.
Not Queen Elizabeth II, the role that won Mirren the Oscar in 2007 for The Queen. But her earlier namesake, Queen Elizabeth I, which she played in a mini-series of the same name for HBO in 2005.
“[Golda] was extraordinary brave and her commitment to Isreal was total,” said Mirren. “It was a bit like playing Elizabeth the first of England, in the sense [of] her commitment to her country and to her nation. She achieved it without being the sort of power mad sort of dictator character. She was very maternal. She had that wonderful domestic side to her. She was happiest when she was on the kibbutz looking after the chickens, but life took her on a different path.”
That different path is the focus of Golda, the new drama from Israeli director Guy Nattiv (Skin), which had its world premiere Monday,...

Up until a few years ago, there was a shady little pub here in Brno, Czech Republic, that only had one desirable feature: A six-foot statue of the lovable Rockbiter creature from "The NeverEnding Story." I would even take people there to suffer bad beer just so we could marvel at that unexpected monument to Wolfgang Petersen's dark fantasy adventure. It wasn't the only legacy of the film's enduring popularity around here; Limahl's title song, which was a hit single across Europe, is still played on regular rotation on the local radio station. It is one of the many benefits of living in the Czech Republic.
"The NeverEnding Story," based on the first half of Michael Ende's epic fantasy novel, was Petersen's next project after spending three years making his tense U-boat drama, "Das Boot." The German director received an Oscar nomination for his troubles but wanted...

When you think of director Wolfgang Petersen (who passed away last year), the first thing that comes to mind is probably not a movie about ailing Empresses, heroic young boys, and giant, flying luck dragons. After all, a glimpse of Petersen's filmography doesn't really seem to suggest that he's the kind of guy too interested in fantasy movies for children. Much of his resume is studded with impressive hits like 1981's "Das Boot" and 1997's "Air Force One." Both of these films are firmly based in reality and depict both militaristic and political storylines, with "Das Boot" focusing on a German submarine in World War II and "Air Force One" honing in on a terrorist attack aboard the President of the United States' plane with not a single luck dragon is in sight.
Still, there is one movie of Petersen's that, while great, doesn't quite fit with the rest of...

HBO and HBO Max are becoming very unpredictable.

It's sometime in the late '90s, and this writer's family has just gotten their first DVD player. A new era in home entertainment has dawned, and to sell these newfangled upgrades to the Vcr, our local big box store offered a promo: buy this DVD gizmo, and pick any two DVDs from this small assortment for free. After intense deliberations and a wild card vote to buy a new game for our Nintendo 64 system instead, the family landed on its choices: Jan de Bont's whirlwind disaster movie "Twister" and Wolfgang Petersen's terrorism-in-the-skies thriller "Air Force One."

Paul Verhoeven's 1997 war satire "Starship Troopers" was initially greeted with skepticism from audiences and critics alike. Set in a distant future where humanity is engaged in a seemingly permanent war with outsize intelligent insects, Verhoeven made extensive use of clear-throated, pro-military propaganda and clothed his all-too-attractive cast in Nazi-like regalia. With its glorified violence and deliberately idiotic bluster, "Starship Troopers" was very clearly meant to read as a parody of actual fascist filmmaking as seen in Nazi films like Leni Riefenstahl's 1935 film "The Triumph of the Will" and her 1938 film "Olympia." Despite its satirical tone, some critics described "Troopers" as being aggressively pro-fascist, and accused Verhoeven of selling the very military mindset he worked so hard to eschew.
Although the film would go on to make over 120 million at the box office, "Starship Troopers" was considered something of a "lesser" film in 1997, and wasn't held in very high regard.

After years (and years) of waiting for Harrison Ford to dust of the fedora and whip for one last ride, the time has finally come. During Ccxp in Brazil, Disney decided to unveil the first trailer for "Indiana Jones 5," which is officially titled "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." The footage leaves much to discuss but, arguably, the biggest of them all is the fact that director James Mangold and the team at Lucasfilm have managed to deliver us a young Harrison Ford. Yes, the actor is going to be de-aged using technology we've seen before -- but this may be the most convincing example yet.
The trailer features a couple of key shots of Ford being de-aged to look like himself 40 years ago. Sure, we've seen examples of this technology in movies like "The Irishman," as well as with Luke Skywalker in "The Mandalorian" season 2. But these...

Indiana Jones is back, with the fifth installment releasing a trailer and a new title: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
The film, directed by James Mangold, stars Harrison Ford, back as the adventurer for his final installment, alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Ford played the genre-defining character four times previously, in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Temple of Doom (1984), The Last Crusade (1989) and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), all of which were directed by Steven Spielberg.
The film employs de-aging technology for its opening sequence, which is reportedly set in 1944, about eight years after the events in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. After the sequence, the film’s narrative will leap forward to 1969 — with Ford as his current self — for the bulk of the film’s action.

A great moment in a good war movie can stir up emotions up in even the hardest of moviegoers. Think of "The Ride of the Valkyries" in Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now." The ambush of the Acheron in "Master and Commander." The German U-Boat crew singing "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" in "Das Boot." One of the more joyous scenes (before the Nazis regain the upper hand) in the pantheon involves a Triumph motorcycle, barbed wire, and the "King of Cool."
"The Great Escape" might be considered more of a "war is fun" film than a "war is hell" film. John Sturges' 1963 adaptation of Paul Brickhill's 1950 non-fiction book of the same name chronicles prisoners and their efforts to escape the German Pow camp Stalag Luft III in 1942. The cast is stacked, the story influential, and its climactic motorcycle stunt –- much of which is done by star Steve McQueen,...

On Oct. 26, 1982, NBC introduced St. Elsewhere to TV audiences. The ensemble medical drama went on to run for six seasons on the network. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review, as included in a TeleVisions column, is below:
Passing in Review: St. Elsewhere (NBC, Tuesday, 10-11 p.m.) The critics are having a field day. “Well written,” they’ve called it. “Touching.” “Gritty.” And a variety of other words and phrases all meant to tell us that St. Elsewhere, the new hour-long slice-of-life medical drama on NBC, is topnotch television. They’ve compared it to that other prized hour of TV drama, Hill Street Blues. And well they should. Both come from Mtm Enterprises, and both have a similar type of stark realism base which at once repels and attracts — like much of reality. While Hill Street gets its story lines and plots from police life,...

Malta has a rich history as a filming location with directors such as Ridley Scott, Paul Greengrass, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg and Oliver Stone all having shot big budget projects in the country across the last two decades. During this time, productions have been attracted by the country’s epic locations, generous tax incentives, renowned water tanks and skilled crew base.
But it has really been in the last five years that the territory has ramped up its efforts to attract foreign shoots to the European archipelago while also attempting to grow its local film industry. Malta now offers one of the most attractive cash rebates available, raised from 27 to 40 three years ago and, this year, it announced an “upgrade” on that rebate to enhance its attractiveness as a location amid the global production boom. Additionally, Malta recently announced a €40 million (40.1 million) investment from government to build a major new...
