In his review of the new horror film Immaculate (you can read it Here), JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray said the movie – which reunites Sydney Sweeney with Michael Mohan, who directed her in the erotic thriller The Voyeurs and the Netflix series Everything Sucks! – is “a decent throwback to Dario Argento-style Italian horror movies.” During a recent post-screening Q&a at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Boston Seaport, Mohan also revealed that one particular scene in the movie was inspired by the work one of my favorite grindhouse era filmmakers, Jack Hill – and that same scene also had to be salvaged with the help of Saw X director Kevin Greutert!
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared the information from the Q&A, reporting that Mohan said, “The biggest scene that did not work and I’m still not happy with is the scene when Isabelle tries to drown Cecilia. I studied a...

Marlene Clark, an actor who appeared on “Sanford and Son,” the horror movie “Ganja & Hess” and several other films of the ’60s and ’70s, died on May 18. She was 85.
Clark starred in several films ahead of landing her breakout role as Lamont Lawson’s (played by Demond Wilson) wife Janet in “Sanford and Son.” She later starred in the 1973 horror movie “Ganja & Hess” alongside Duane Jones.
Clark was born and raised in Harlem, N.Y., and spent time in West Virginia during her summers. She returned to New York after attending Morristown Jr. College in Tennessee and enrolled in City College. While at school, Clark participated in school plays, igniting her interest in the acting world.
Clark later moved to Los Angeles with her then-husband Billy Dee Williams. She began her career in entertainment as a fashion model before landing her first role in the 1968 film “For Love of Ivy.

Marlene Clark, best known for her portrayals of Lamont’s girlfriend Janet in the 1970s NBC sitcom Sanford & Son and as Ganja Meda in the 1973 horror film Ganja & Hess, has died.
Demond Wilson, who played Lamont on Sanford & Son, paid tribute to Clark on Twitter, writing “Rip beautiful actress Marlene Clark. . . It was a delight to work with you…,” noting she died on May 18. Wilson listed her age as 73, but that has not been confirmed.
Clark joined Sanford & Son in the comedy’s fifth season in 1976 as a recurring opposite Wilson, remaining through the series’ final season the following year.
Raised in the Harlem section of New York City, Clark was a fashion model before her transition to acting.

Showing as part of this year’s Fantasia Midnights program, Synapse Films premiered their restoration of writer/director Jeff Lieberman’s cult favorite Blue Sunshine. The 1977 film about former hippies suffering from homicidal acid flashbacks will be getting a 4K release at an undisclosed future date, and the image quality is noticeably better than on my DVD. But, what about the actual film? Glad you asked…
Blue Sunshine begins at a party where one of the guests is doing an impersonation of Rodan. “The artist?” asks one of the guests. “No, the monster” But a real monster is about to show up as Frannie loses his wig and his mind and begins shoving guests into the fireplace.

I first saw Braid (aka Dying to Play) at the North Bend Film Festival in 2018. I immediately loved it. The colors, the story, the bizarreness of it all was right up my alley. But there was something else about it that really struck me. It was something I couldn’t quite define, but it made me comfortable. I felt safe with it, in a strange way.
It was only later when I saw Greta Gerwig’s phenomenal adaptation of Little Women that I made the connection and figured it out. The March sisters create a space where they can be completely themselves. They are loud and boisterous and free from societal constraints. It’s a space where they can simply exist. And it is Theirs.
In her film, Mitzi Peirone creates a similar space for her trio of characters. Sure, it’s a little more violent and murderous than the March house,...

We recently reviewed Bae Wolf from writer/director David Axe, a filmmaker who got his start in features writing The Theta Girl, from director Christopher Bickel who – unlike Axe – hasn’t followed up that 2017 film with any further features. Instead Bickel has, in the intervening years, spent his time making shorts and music videos. Now however Bickel makes his return to filmmaking by directing and co-writing Bad Girls, a girl-gang homage to the films of Russ Meyer and Jack Hill.
Bad Girls follows three “troubled” women – Val (Morgan Shaley Renew), Mitzi (Senethia Dresch), and Carolyn (Shelby Lois Guinn) – who, after spending their youth in and out of detention halls and jail, work together at a strip club. However the...

The always-dynamic director Jack Hill goes teen-gang wild with this absolutely crazy take on Jd pictures, pitched three octaves higher than normal exploitation drama. All the nasty-rasty thrills are here, from an episode of Wip sadism to brutal misogyny to a gang skirmish fought on a roller skating rink. What began as one of those exploitation cheapies with three women, comes alive with the dynamic Robbie Lee, Joanne Nail and Monica Gayle — even with all the sexist cruelty on view, the no-limits performances feel liberating, energizing. Hill’s gang epic is so stylized, it’s almost a fantasy. With some good interview and analysis extras.

As Scream Factory continues to diversify their slate of releases — most recently striking a licensing deal with Warner Bros. at long last, resulting in more John Carpenter titles joining the lineup — one of the exciting parts of the company continues to be their commitment to giving smaller, lesser-known catalogue titles the HD treatment. Ever wondered what it would be like to visit an La porn theatre in the early 1970′s? Well, those lovely folks over at Vinegar Syndrome may have the release just for you. I’d usually set the scene and build up the excitement (I do actually do that right?), but we have over 12 hours of smut to get through so let’s get on with it!
Disc 1: 7 Pm – 11 Pm
Girl Acrobatics (19??, dir: unknown)
Our uninterrupted sleazefest starts off a little bit tame actually (as it is a purely simulated scene) and sees a too cool for school yuppie returning home to his wife after being away for a couple of days. Naturally, he wants a welcome home present and it’s not until he’s in that classic handstand position with his tiny pecker exposed in all its limp glory that he gets it. Just like his member, this segment is short and sweet.

Rolling Thunder is one of my favorite films. I’m not just saying that because it is next month’s Late Nite Grindhouse screening, it includes almost everything I loved in 70’s cinema. It is a vigilante story, a character study, a road movie and a great, justifying finale. It doesn’t hurt that it feels, at times, an echo of co-writer, Paul Schrader’s previous work, Taxi Driver (which is definitely in my top 5 of my favorite films).
The film has had a release history that was troubled. Rolling Thunder was to be released by 20th Century Fox but after it showed as a sneak 2nd feature in a double bill with the third Dirty Harry film, The Enforcer, the crowd reacted violently towards some of the studio heads in the audience. This infamous screening took place in San Jose where the majority of the crowd was latino and...

Did Quentin Tarantino stumble this time out? His tale of western killers sharing a snowbound cabin builds almost zero suspense, and the verbal excess and violent grossness lack Tarantino's usual clever, wickedly funny edge. Special Mention: C’est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog)
Written by André Bonzel, Benoît Poelvoorde, Rémy Belvaux and Vincent Tavier
Directed by André Bonzel and Benoît Poelvoorde
France, 1992
Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel, and Benoît Poelvoorde set out to make their first feature film with little resources and little money. In the tradition of filmmakers who can’t afford much film stock, the trio settled for a faux-documentary-style approach – the result is a high-concept satire of media violence that would spoof documentaries by following around a fictitious sociopath named Ben as he exercises his lethal craft. While the cinematic tradition of presenting villains as suave, charming, attractive, and intelligent individuals is nothing new, Man Bites Dog was still ahead of its time. Much like the great Hitchcockian villains such as Joseph Cotten in Shadow of a Doubt, Ben is a man of action and ideas. He expounds on art,...

Curb Stomp #1
Writer: Ryan Ferrier
Artist: Devaki Neogi
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $4
Description: Three gangs. Five girls. No way out. Machete Betty leads a small gang of women under the selfappointed task of protecting their home of Old Beach, one of three boroughs surrounding a rich metropolitan city. When Betty takes the life of a rival gang member in an act of self-defense, she sets off a chain reaction of retaliation, gang warfare, and unlikely allies.
Our Take: As much as I wanted this to be a mix of Switchblade Sisters and The Warriors, it doesn’t have the delirious absurdity of the latter or the delicious trashiness of the former. But, like The Warriors, it retains the brazen violence of that cult classic while subtly investing the protagonists with the kind of relative depth that elevated Switchblade Sisters above pure sleaze. Absolutely worth your time if you love crime drama,...

Somewhere deep and sometimes in the dark was that treasure just waiting to be discovered and shared with the world Archeologists got fame and glory. Cinephiles got the credit for showing you something you’ve never seen before.
But now in our new modern age of the internet and digital media, the search for those obscurities in the celluloid vaults has become a far more difficult undertaking. With video stores going the way of the dodo and revival houses always in danger of closing down, some films may never see the light of public consciousness again (if they ever saw it in the first place). It’s a scary possibility that audiences may be deprived of some of the best offbeat and obscure visions from filmmakers who...

And the announcements keep rolling in… Yesterday, Scream Factory revealed that Phantom of the Paradise would be joining the 2014 lineup and it has just been announced that they’ll also be bringing 80′s cult classics Evil Speak and Final Exam to Blu-ray:
“Fans of early 80s school-themed horror films are in luck with this news. 1981′s college campus slasher film Final Exam and 1982′s satanic revenge epic Evilspeak (starring Clint Howard) will both be making their debuts on Blu-ray both for the first time this Summer!
These titles have been with Code Red – another long-time cult film home entertainment company – for some time and we are pleased that we were able to make a deal with them for these two guilty pleasures.
Expect the same extras that were on the prior Code Red DVD releases to be imported over. More details on street date and if any more extras are...

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Spider Baby | Hitchcock | To The Wonder | Perfect Friday | The Kid Stays In The Picture
Spider Baby
This darkly humorous, deeply demented 1964 curiosity is a genuine cult phenomenon, one with a reputation that grows by the year. By the time it came out in 1968, hardly anyone cared. However, it's subsequently found an audience, so today we can enjoy it on a rather well-assembled Blu-ray.
It's usually classed as a horror film or a B-movie but this slice of American gothic doesn't fit neatly into either category. It concerns the Merrye family, a clan so inbred they have a rare malady named after them. Merrye syndrome affects one branch of this rotten family tree, causing regression ("A progressive deterioration of the mental faculty … a rotting of the brain, so to speak") to set in as they reach adolescence. Kept sequestered in a dilapidated house, three afflicted youngsters are protected by custodian Bruno...

Throughout the month of October, Editor-in-Chief and resident Horror expert Ricky D, will be posting a list of his favorite Horror films of all time. The list will be posted in six parts. Click here to see every entry.
As with all lists, this is personal and nobody will agree with every choice – and if you do, that would be incredibly disturbing. It was almost impossible for me to rank them in order, but I tried and eventually gave up.

Special Mention:
American Psycho
Directed by Mary Harrron
Written by Mary Harron
2000, USA
Bret Easton Ellis’s dark and violent satire of America in the 1980s was brought to the big screen by director Mary Harron. Initially slapped with the MPAA’s kiss of death (an Nc-17 rating), American Psycho was later re-edited and reduced to a more commercially dependable “R”. Perhaps the film works best as a slick satire about misogyny,...

Living in the tri-state area (that would be New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania for me) means that you have to watch the message boards for new 35mm screenings of old, rare, amazing horror films. I had stumbled across the Hudson Horror Show a couple years ago and have only attended one, but it was a game changer. The Hudson Horror Show is a semi-annual marathon of horror movies show on the big screen in 35mm in Pougkeepsie, NY. One is usually in May; the other December. It’s a great crowd who knows how to laugh and scream in a theater. These are the guys who showed Cannibal Holocaust and handed out vomit bags among other little goodies.
My first experience with the Hhs guys was perfect. A pile of cheap but worthwhile vendor tables, strange mini mall Poughkeepsie and five horror movies that rocked my socks. Cannibal Holocaust!

Quietly becoming one of New York's most impressive and unique classic horror film festivals, the Hudson Horror Show has announced the lineup and date for the sixth installment of the fest. Read on and dig the impressive roster of movies.
Anchored by Chris Alo and Tad Leger, the Hudson Horror Show team have been consistently offering extremely entertaining 12-hour film fests for the past three years, and their sixth offering looks to be no different. Headlined (or be-headlined…Baa-hahaha!) by Re-Animator, the currently lineup also includes Conan: The Barbarian (which is celebrating its 30th anniversary), Phantasm II, The Devil's Rain and Switchblade Sisters as well as a mystery sixth film. Now that's a gritty line-up if I've ever seen one!
Tickets for the show are on sale now, and they've been consistently selling out. So even though Hudson Horror Show 666 isn't being held until December, if you're interested in attending,...

On “From Manila With Love,” a 45-minute making-of documentary included on the new Women In Cages Collection triple-feature set, legendary exploitation director Jack Hill (Spider Baby, Switchblade Sisters) rattles off the compulsory elements of a women-in-prison movie. At a minimum, Hill notes, it must have women showering, fighting in mud, and being tortured. Hosing scenes are optional. In the next breath, Hill likens these obligations to Shakespeare’s need to include swordfights and a comic-relief character in his plays to meet the audience’s expectations. Though comparing Shakespeare to foxy mud wrestlers is the cultural equivalent to a sudden drop ...

You had me at “Alice and Wonderland with machine guns.” That description is the one-sentence grabber for Zack Snyder’s (300, Watchmen) next flick, Sucker Punch. A level of all girl kick-assery that hasn’t been seen since the days of Switchblade Sisters, the girls of Sucker Punch are out to outdo even the likes of Hit Girl from Kick Ass. I got a black eye just from looking at this photo.

You had me at the title. Ticked Off Trannies With Knives was one of the most buzzed about films at Tribeca this year and you want to know why? Yep, the title. It’s a title that is tailor made for the midnight slot. Hell, at this point it’s hard to remember which came first – midnight movies or the exploitation genre. Now, since grind house went art house, exploitation has received a lot of overdue praise. Directors like Jack Hill (Coffee, Switchblade Sisters, Spider Baby) and Brian Trenchard-Smith (Turkey Shoot, Dead End Drive-in) have been embraced by a larger audience lately, largely due to the cultural influence of younger director’s like Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Craig Brewer. They helped make cult cool.
