Exclusive: Mario Bava’s cult crime movie Rabid Dogs is getting an English-Language remake from in-demand Hollywood scribes Samuel Franco and Evan Kilgore.
The film’s original producer Alfredo Leone is aboard as exec-producer.
Franco and Kilgore have acquired the remake rights to the 1974 feature which follows the bungled robbery of three violent criminals and the hostages they take – including a young woman, a middle-aged man, and his child – as they attempt to make a clean getaway from the police.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

As the summer comes to a close, it seems as though most distributors–especially on the indie side–were holding onto their gems before the busy fall festival slate as a number of the year’s best films arrive this month. If we’re being honest, though, our most-anticipated film won’t actually get a theatrical release, but will instead arrive on The Criterion Collection with Terrence Malick’s extended edition of The Tree of Life. However for this feature, we’ll stick to those films one will be able to see in theaters, so without further adieu, here are the 15 films we recommend this month.
Matinees to See: Nico, 1988 (8/1), Christopher Robin (8/3), A Prayer Before Dawn (8/10), Buybust (8/10), Summer of ’84 (8/10), Crazy Rich Asians (8/15), Juliet, Naked (8/17), Memoir of War (8/17), Notes on an Appearance (8/17), We the Animals (8/17), The Wife (8/17), The Night is Short, Walk On Girl (8/21), What Keeps You Alive (8/24), Papillon (8/24), The Happytime Murders...

Italian directors have always had a penchant for jumping on the cinematic bandwagon whenever a popular film is released. And we aren’t talking about just a couple of directors and a couple of films, but nearly all directors and, depending upon the genre, sometimes hundreds of films. Thus, we have the pepla of the 1950’s and 1960’s, the poliziotteschi and gialli of the 1970’s, the spaghetti westerns of the 1960’s and early 1970’s, the Jaws-inspired rip-offs, the Alien-inspired ripoffs, and the zombie and jungle/cannibal epics of the 1980’s. But, with the international sensation of the Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis vehicle entitled The Vikings in 1958, Italians were quick to jump on this particular bandwagon as well, resulting in a seven-year cycle of Viking films. And Mario Bava, best known for his proto-slashers and horror vehicles, was not averse to climbing on the bandwagon occasionally himself.

The filmmaking duo Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani have gone about in some kind of relative obscurity since their first feature Amer in 2009. While that striking debut perhaps should’ve garnered them more attention, as well as the subsequent The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears, it feels safe to say they’re not out to get that crossover hit. If anything, they seem content kind of just doing the same thing over and over again.
To those not in the know, their whole deal is doing riffs on genre that cut out virtually all the connective tissue, leaving simply a procession of visual tropes. In the case of Let the Corpses Tan, there’s closeups on squinted eyes and gun barrels, aggressive whip pans and overbearing Morricone-esque music cues. Some will say they’re filmmakers made for those who find most Italian exploitation movies boring for the...

In 1961, director Mario Bava (Rabid Dogs, Kill Baby Kill) turned his hand to the historical adventure genre, capitalizing on the recent success of 1958’s Kirk Douglas vehicle The Vikings. The result was a colorful, swashbuckling epic of treachery, heroism and forbidden love: Erik the Conqueror. In 786 Ad, the invading Viking forces are repelled from the shores of England, leaving behind a young boy – Erik, son of the slain Viking king. Years later, Erik (George Ardisson, Juliet of the Spirits), raised by the English queen as her own, becomes Duke of Helford, while across the sea, his brother Eron (Cameron Mitchell, Blood and Black Lace) assumes leadership of the Viking horde and sets his sights on conquering England once again, setting the two estranged brothers on a collision course that will determine the fates of their respective kingdoms… Featuring a bombastic score by frequent collaborator Roberto Nicolosi (Black Sunday) and memorably...

Though he worked across a number of genres, be it fantasy with Hercules in the Haunted World, science fiction with Planet of the Vampires or the crime thriller with Rabid Dogs, the great Mario Bava will forever be most closely associated with horror. His work in the genre is both groundbreaking and legendary, its influence felt across a wide swath of filmmakers and films. Traces of his gothic horror movies can be seen as recently as 2015’s Crimson Peak, while his 1971 effort A Bay of Blood inspired countless slashers, none more than Friday the 13th. It is his 1963 thriller Evil Eye, however, that would help create a genre both known and beloved by fans of Italian horror: the giallo film.

Mario Bava turns from spooky gothic tales to a relentlessly violent murder spree in the glossy world of high fashion. Demonic activity, skinheads, and psychopaths: these are the words one might use to describe the upcoming genre films of 2016. From a possessed painter, to a devilish leg wound, to full-on war waged within the confines of a futuristic apartment complex, blood flies and fingers point in what looks to be one of the most intense, purposely-paced and experimental years for independent films to date.
Traces of David Cronenberg's Videodrome and Scanners, Stuart Rosenberg's The Amityville Horror, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and Nicholas Hytner's The Crucible can be found within these electrifying new entries from promising, emerging artists, proving that pulling from the past can wind up making a project feel fresh and new.
Although many of the films carry similar traits and themes like directorial debuts, single set locations, cult activity, and the ever-present presence of the devil's unholy spirit, each of these features is unique in its own persona.

The bank-job-gone-wrong has been a familiar premise for many genre movies, but the reason filmmakers return to it is that it's ripe with potential. Making his directorial debut, Éric Hannezo hopes to create something special with "Rabid Dogs," and today we have an exclusive clip from the French thriller. Based on Mario Bava's 1974 movie of the same name, the film stars Virginie Ledoyen and Lambert Wilson and follows a trio of bank robbers who take some desperate measures when their job takes a turn for the worse. I’m not ashamed to admit that, as a die-hard horror fan, there are still some gaps in my movie-watching history. The original Rabid Dogs, directed by the Italian legend that is Mario Bava, is one such film (something I should correct given the film has recently had the Arrow Video treatment). It’s a situation that meant I was headed into this redux with no prior knowledge of the original.
Once again based on the Michael J. Carroll short story “Man and Boy”, this new take on the story – from first-time director Éric Hannezo and The Horde co-writer/director Yannick Dahan – sees three desperate criminals take a young woman and a father...

It is time for me to make my peace with the fact that I will not be at Fantastic Fest this year. Last year's fest was one of my favorites ever, fitting for a tenth anniversary, and I would love to go this year. It's just not in the cards, though. It guts me, too. The event continues to grow and change and evolve, and it features one of the greatest programming teams in the business right now. There are films playing at the festival that I'll see in Toronto, and I'm sure I'll catch up with others, but that's not the point. Fantastic Fest is an experience, and an amazing one. If you want to go, you still can. "Daytime Only Badges, Fan Badges, and 2Nd Half Badges for Fantastic Fest 2015 are available for purchase here," today's press release urged. If you can go for the second half, you'll...

One of the greatest genre film festivals in the world (some say the best) has just announced its second wave of titles, including a few titles so anticipated you’ll wish you’re in Austin next month. Below are 35 more films to add to the 23 already announced in the first wave. They include Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise and Jeremy Saulnier’s follow up to Blue Ruin, The Green Room. In addition to the films, Fantastic Fest is also delivering something special this year with a performance from Itchy-o – “a blazing, 32-member aural assault from the darkest depths of Colorado.” Fantastic Fest will also host the World Premiere of Lazer Team, the first feature film from web series gods Rooster Teeth. “This is a big year for genre cinema. We’re exceptionally proud to honor incredible filmmakers...

It’s hard to believe that we are a month away from what is possibly the best genre film festival in North America! After announcing a Kurt Russell included first wave, we get a wave that probably includes all the films I have the most interest in. The French remake of what I consider is one of Mario Bava’s best films, Rabid Dogs is included. Along with Jeremy Saulnier’s follow up from Blue Ruin, Green Room where Patrick Stewart plays a Neo-Nazi club owner, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of High-Rise and the horror film that has some chilling buzz, The Witch, are all included. Check out the full listing below and wait with anticipation for our coverage of the festival!
Fantastic Fest is excited to announce the second wave of programming featuring the Us Premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster as the opening night film.

Editor’S Note: We had this scheduled to be published on July 30th which was also when the announcement of the First Wave of films for Fantastic Fest 2015 was announced.
Fiends, there is no doubt in my mind that the weeks in late September in Austin, TX is heaven on earth for a genre fan like me. Why? Two words – Fantastic Fest!
Every year, we’ve been trying to see if we can figure out what might play before those three separated waves of amazing content roll out. Some years, our guesses have been good. Some years, not so good. Even if these films don’t play at the best genre film festival in the United States, we hope that you put them on your radar, regardless. Most of our picks are from films that are on our radar and have possibly played other genre film festivals.

Exclusive: Other new titles on the Cannes slate include films by Nicole Garcia and Cristian Mungiu.
Wild Bunch is to kick off sales on Emmanuelle Bercot’s upcoming drug scandal tale 150 Milligrams at the Cannes Marché next week.
Danish actress Sidse Babett Knudsen has signed to star as a lung specialist who discovers a link between a series of mysterious deaths and a state-approved drug.
The film is inspired by France’s real-life health scandal revolving around the diabetes drug Mediator, which is estimated to have caused the deaths of around 2,000 people before it was withdrawn from pharmacies in 2009.
Bercot and co-writer Séverine Bosschem’s screenplay is based on the book Médiator 150Mg: Combien de Morts? by Irène Frachon, a pulmonologist who was one of the first medical professionals to spot the link and suggested there had been a cover-up.

Mario Bava for me is a director I mostly know for horror films and his importance to not only Giallo but the slasher genre. Now that Arrow Video have released Rabid Dogs on Blu-ray I see a new side to him, one that may have come too late for movie fans to fully enjoy but one that showed how good a director he truly was.
When a robbery goes wrong a gang of crooks are forced to take a woman prisoner and end up hijacking a car taking the man inside and his sick son prisoner. Refusing to get out and allow the man to take his son to the hospital they force him to help them escape into the countryside.

Exclusive: French sales company also set to launch new films by Leconte and Delpy at Afm.
Wild Bunch has picked up sales on controversial Russia director Nikita Mikhalkov’s ambitious period drama Sunstroke, which it will launch internationally at the Afm.
“It’s a big budget, epic love story as only Mikhalkov knows how to deliver set just as the Russian revolution gains pace and the old Imperial era is destroyed forever,” said Wild Bunch sales chief Vincent Maraval.
The film revolves around a Tsarist soldier, awaiting his fate in a Bolsheviks-run prison camp, who recalls a short, passionate affair he once had with a beautiful and enigmatic married woman.
It is an adaptation of a 1927 novel by celebrated Nobel Prize-winning Russian novelist Ivan Bunin, written while he was living in exile in Paris.

Arrow Video has announced the UK Blu-ray and DVD release of Mario Bava’s cult classic Rabid Dogs, which arrives in the UK on 27th October. This new deluxe release will include both Rabid Dogs, Bava’s original version posthumously completed from his notes, and Kidnapped, the re-edited, re-dubbed and re-scored version, supervised by Bava’s son and assistant director Lamberto Bava, and producer Alfredo Leone. Mario Bava’s reputation as a filmmaker rests chiefly on his contribution to horror, particularly his baroque and beautiful Gothic chillers of the 1960s. All the more surprising that in the mid-1970s he should turn to the crime genre and create Cani arrabbiati (aka Rabid Dogs), an abrasive kidnap psychodrama that ranks alongside anything done by the better-known ‘tough guy’ directors of the day. Together with both versions of the film, this new disc will also feature a newly translated English subtitled track,...

Forget Route 666. The Devil’s Mile is an even more evil stretch of road in this new horror thriller starring David Hayter and directed by Joseph O’Brien, with whom we recently had a chance to chat about the film.
Devil's Mile follows a trio of kidnappers who take an ill-advised detour (is there any other kind?) en route to deliver their hostages – a pair of teenage girls - to their mysterious employer. When one of the girls dies along the way, the trio’s slowly-boiling mistrust explodes into chaos.
But what they thought was their worst day ever is only beginning as they are engulfed by the hellish forces that haunt the road - a road they may never escape.

Last week's episode, the sublimely conflicted "Rabid Dogs," ended with a pair of calls: Jesse (Aaron Paul), consumed with paranoia, dialed Walt (Bryan Cranston) with a promise: he'd be coming for him where it really mattered. Moments later, Walt, made a call of his own, to Todd (Jesse Plemons), informing him that the services of his skuzzy Uncle Jack (Michael Bowen), co-architect of last season's massive prison murder, would be needed once more. This week's "To'hajiilee," written by longtime "Breaking Bad" principle George Mastras (who penned last season's crackerjack "Dead Freight" episode), picked up on the other side of one of those calls. But before we got to that phone call, answered by Todd, there was a lengthy sequence involving Uncle Jack and twitchy Neo Nazi Kenny (Kevin Rankin), as they prepared a batch of meth. Lydia Rodarte-Quayle (Laura Fraser) was there to inspect her product, her face-mask pulled tightly over her equally tight face.

I’m a huge Mario Bava fan. For those of you that have been following the site and the podcast, you already know this. While he is growing to be a bit more appreciated, I still find him to be the best of the Italian genre directors. Yes, even above Dario Argento & Lucio Fulci. What Argento & Fulci provide are visual assaults courtesy of color, violence and gore. Bava, on the other hand, can do those things but he has coherent stories in his films. Look, I like Fulci & Argento but there is no question that I am a Bava fan. Arrow Video was first out of the gate to release some Bava on Blu-Ray with Bay of Blood (aka Twitch of the Death Nerve and other titles) and Kino has been releasing Bava’s films Stateside.

Last weekend marked the long awaited theatrical release of You're Next, a home invasion horror flick that premiered on the festival circuit just about a full two years ago, way back in September of 2011. (Check out our review here.) Is it uncommon for such a highly praised film to take so long to enter our lives? Well, not exactly. Today we take a look back at ten other horror films that also spent a lot of time on the shelf before getting released, the majority of which ended up becoming big time fan favorites. Go figure! Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Though widely regarded as one of the best and most disturbing horror films the genre has ever seen, John McNaughton's real-life-inspired Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was made in 1986 but not released until 1990. Several factors contributed to the delay, but it was the film's extremely graphic content that was largely responsible,...

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Kidnapped Four men weighed down with stolen loot try to make their escape, but when one of their own is gunned down the remaining three take hostages in their bid for freedom. They end up in a car with a woman, a man, and the man’s son as they force the hostages to drive them out of the city. As the hours tick by the tension builds as to what will happen and who will survive the getaway. Director Mario Bava took a break from his usual horrific fare to make this tight and somewhat claustrophobic thriller, and the result is one of his most entertaining films. Much of the movie is a fairly traditional setup that puts in place certain expectations, but Bava and writer Alessandro Parenzo are far more interested in subversion...

Rating (out of five): ** 1/2
Lamberto Bava is the son of the legendary Italian horror director Mario Bava. Lamberto entered the business young and assisted his father on many films, and recently even helped to assemble the amazing "lost" film Rabid Dogs (1974). When Mario died in 1980, Lamberto embarked upon his own filmmaking career. Two high points were Demons (1986) and Demons 2 (1987), both of which were co-scripted by Dario Argento, another Italian horror legend, and were both playfully post-modern chillers well before Scream came along.

Just a few days ago I was talking to our writer Michael Haffner’s father about the films in his heyday of horror, exploitation and basic genre cinema. We talked about westerns, Hammer horror and about personal experiences. Mario Bava’s Lisa and the Devil came up and I proceeded to verbially profess my love for Bava. Gore fans have Fulci and while the fantastical seem to favor Argento, I lean towards Bava more as he has always had more substance in his films than Argento. Don’t get me wrong, I love Argento but in my opinion, Argento is best experienced with musical accompaniment by Goblin. Network Awesome seems to think Mario Bava is a big deal as well as they have dedicated a whole week in video programming to the man. Check out the details beyond the break.

Two weeks ago, it was announced that Cabin in the Woods, the horror flick produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, would finally get a release date after years of sitting on the shelf. It's set for April 2012. Then yesterday, in even more surprising news, a release date was miraculously set for Margaret, Kenneth Lonergan's long-delayed follow-up to You Can Count on Me. That film, which stars Matt Damon and Anna Paquin, has been delayed now for six years, mostly because Lonergan couldn't finish the edit, which led to a lot of squabbles with the studio. Those two movies -- along with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which also recently received a release date -- were among the list of the Six Highly Anticipated Films You May Never Get to See, which we ran back in May.
However, long delays have rarely been kind to a film's box-office prospects, and if history is any indication,...
