It’s been many years since Axl Rose released a note of new music or agreed to an in-depth interview, but the elusive Guns N’ Roses frontman has shown a surprising willingness to lend his voice to cartoons. Two years ago, he appeared on Boomerang’s New Looney Tunes where he saved the world from an asteroid by singing “Rock the Rock” with Bugs Bunny on guitar. And tonight he’ll be guesting on the network’s Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? where he’ll get to interact with Shaggy, Fred,...

This exclusive preview of Nightwing/Magilla Gorilla is surprising in every way.
With Halloween fast approaching, we're due for another round of the shockingly good DC/Hanna Barbera crossovers, and DC sent us an exclusive preview of Nightwing/Magilla Gorilla from Heath Corson (from the also-shockingly good Bizarro) and Tom Grummett (Superboy).
We've already had a number of insanely good comics from DC's Hanna Barbera line - both individual series like Snagglepuss and The Flintstones, and from crossovers like Black Lightning/Hong Kong Phooey. And while it's astonishing that any of these premises came out good at all, it's even more incredible that they continue to be good.
Magilla Gorilla was a flimsy 60s premise about a gorilla who Mr. Peebles can't sell. That's...about it. It was the same joke over and over again, with no actual gags outside of your typical thin early-tv sitcom repetitions and fourth wall breaking.

If nothing else, Houdini and Doyle is a show put together by people who love watching television… and know where, and how, to borrow from the unusual things that seem to be working.
The danger involved here is that it will end up feeling too cobbled together. The obvious popularity of Sherlock, and other period mysteries doesn’t necessarily mix well with sci-fi/paranormal, even if such things are also gaining traction in the ratings. This one even throws in some of the goofy fun of Murdoch Mysteries, which is a great show, but sounds a little screwy on paper.
The long and short of it is that Houdini and Doyle has too many things going on to have much chance of success, and it has to also deal with the idea of keeping some semblance of the reality of two historical figures… plus ghosts.

The Grandmaster is an anomaly – a mournful and delicate kung-fu movie with hardly a trace of machismo about it. The director Wong Kar-Wai cites Bruce Lee as his original inspiration (the film's main character is based on Lee's teacher Ip Man) but we are in a very different world to that of Lee's Fists of Fury or Enter the Dragon. The gorgeous visuals may rekindle memories of Zhang Yimou's equally picturesque period martial arts movies Hero and House of Flying Daggers, or of Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but Wong's approach is a long way removed from these predecessors, too. This is as much a love story and an elegy for a lost world as it is a Hong Kong Phooey action movie.

Boomerang could air revamped versions of classic cartoons.
Anthony Lukom - managing director of Turner UK and Ireland - has said that he wants the channel to screen updates of classic shows such as The Flintstones and Hong Kong Phooey.
"We've got the rights to 100s of 1,000s of characters from Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros, MGM and DC, but we don't have all the ideas," Broadcast quotes Lukom as saying.
"If you've got a great idea for how to reinterpret one of our characters, come and talk to us."

In an "open invitation" to producers, Lukom also used the popular show Adventure Time as an example of the kind of animation he was interested in.
"Kids like to be challenged," he said. "They like the fact that it's something different. It's sophisticated humour that's clever, not just a succession of fart gags. We...

Ebert's always been a fairly mainstream Oscar-Friendly voice so it's no surprise to see three of the (presumed) top six Best Picture nominees at the very top. But it's nice to see lesser discussed titles like End of Watch and Oslo August 31st getting their due.

Imagine for a minute that Hollywood was contemplating a Jetsons movie. They.re not, as far as we know. There was talk about Robert Rodriguez directing one at one point, but that project hasn't been on anyone's radar for years. Still, we.ve seen The Flintstones on screen (twice!) and there.s a Hong Kong Phooey movie in the works, so anything.s possible. So, in this imaginary scenario, George Jetson and his futuristic family are heading to the big screen. Who would you hire as a consultant? James Cameron, for his sci-fi know-how? Jason Segal, for his ability to channel our nostalgia into contemporary comedy? Nope. You.d consult Kanye West. At least, that.s what Kanye hinted at in a relatively crazy Twitter rant late last night. .I was just discussing becoming the creative director for the Jetson movie and someone on the call yelled out ... you should...

Like it or not, the Hong Kong Phooey movie is moving forward. Based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon TV series, the new movie will combine live-action with animation.
Eddie Murphy has been announced as the voice of the title character. He'll follow in the footsteps of another African-American comic actor, Scatman Crothers. He voiced bungling Hong Kong Phooey in the 16 episode animated series back in 1974.
The two performers also share a connection in that they both worked with Redd Foxx. Crothers appeared on Foxx's Sanford & Son and Murphy has said that he idolized Foxx. Murphy also directed and acted with Foxx in the Harlem Nights feature film. Crothers died in 1986 at the age of 76.

Just when you thought Eddie Murphy's career might be taking a tentative step back in the right direction with Brett Ratner's Tower Heist, along comes news that he is slumming it yet another low brow family film (which also happens to be produced by Ratner). It was announced this week that Murphy will be voicing the title character in the upcoming big screen adaptation of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Hong Kong Phooey. As you can probably guess, it will not be fully animated but rather another live-action / CG hybrid in the vein of Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Smurfs, and fellow Hanna-Barbera creation Yogi Bear. Alcon Entertainment founders Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove had this to say about the announcement: "We could not be happier that Eddie Murphy will star as Phooey. There is no overstating his contributions to cinema, and to such enduring stars of family entertainments such as Shrek and Dr.

In what is surely an early warning of the pending 2012 apocalypse, Eddie Murphy has signed to give voice to the Hanna-Barbera character Hong Kong Phooey in a movie that will be a hybrid of live action and animation. Apparently, I was mistaken when I wrote that Hollywood had run out of available cartoons to remake, although I wish to God I wasn't.
If you don't remember, and there's no reason you should, Hong Kong Phooey was about a talking dog (voiced by Scatman Crothers) named Penry whose alter ego is Hong Kong Phooey, a superhero martial arts crime fighter. After the one-two-punch of "Yogi Bear" and "The Smurfs" movies doing boffo business by tickling our nostalgia bone for classic Hanna-Barbera animation, it seemed only a matter of time before studios start pillaging the rest of that great production company's back catalogue. So what's next? Wally Gator? Magilla Gorilla? Lippy the Lion & Hardy Har Har?
Nope, the next big screen Hanna-Barbera character to get the full-on computer-animated treatment has a little more bite.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the character "Hong Kong Phooey," which only ran for 16 episodes back in 1974, will be getting a second chop at stardom in Alcon Entertainment’s live-action/animated adaptation. None other than Eddie Murphy will be voicing the title character, who will have to work hard to erase Donkey from "Shrek" in our hearts.

From Scatman Crothers to Eddie Murphy, Alcon Entertainment announced today that the Shrek co-star will voice the kung fu kickin’ Hanna Babara 1970s character, Hong Kong Phooey, for the upcoming live-action film.

I had a debate with Rob Payne last night about who was going to write a particular piece of trade news. He was going to do it as a sort of "take one for the team." Then I said, "God, please take it so I don't have to. If I do it, it's just going to be two paragraphs of swearing, followed by me insulting the readers. It's my default setting when I'm annoyed, and that news is very, very annoying." Because you see, gentle readers, when I see news about these truly imbecilic, asinine and craptacular movies, I blame you.
Yes, you.
Not even because you're going to see them, though some of you will, and those who do deserve to have your shins filleted by an epileptic meth-head. No, because you make me write these goddamn articles. It's Because Of You, You Fucks, That I Subject Myself To These Atrocities.

Alcon Entertainment has announced plans for a live-action/animation big screen version of Hong Kong Phooey. Based on the 1970s cartoon from Hanna Barbera, Murphy is a perfect choice to capture the lead character. After his voice work in the Shrek series, Murphy is ready to go behind the microphone once again.
It’s easy to recall Murphy as Donkey in the Shrek franchise, but who could forget the actor’s vocal talents as the dragon Mushu in Mulan?

Congrats to Eddie Murphy, who just picked up voicing duties in the live action/animated movie Hong Kong Phooey, the Hanna-Barbera cartoon that only produced 16 episodes but forever validated the legitimacy of dog custodians and their mastery of martial arts. Scatman Crothers provided the original voice of "the number one super guy," but the Shrek/Mulan firebrand will make a worthy substitute. Does this mean we should anticipate more Hanna-Barbera live-action/animation takes in the future? Here are the five best candidates for that treatment.

We haven't heard anything on the project in over two years, but today Alcon Entertainment announced via press release that Eddie Murphy will be lending his voice to the titular character in the live-action/CG hybrid adaptation of Hanna-Barbera's 1970's animated series Hong Kong Phooey. In recent years, when he hasn't been making terrible comedies like Norbit and Meet Dave, the once hilarious comedian has been voicing Donkey in the Shrek franchise. While his voice will certainly will lend the right attitude and style to the character, I can't help but disappointed that films like this are still happening. More below! If there's anyone who can channel the same life and energy that Scatman Cruthers brought to the original series, it's Eddie Murphy. But when we're dealing with another live-action/CG hybrid of a Hanna-Barbara cartoon (or any classic animated show for that matter), I still hate how studios simply...

There are two elements to this bit of news. One, they’re making a live-action/animation hybrid of Hong Kong Phooey. What does that mean? It means that instead of using traditional animation to make a feature length film, Alcon Entertainment will be making something that resembles the original cartoon instead of actually looking like it. Imagine the difference between the cartoon Smurfs and the ones that ended up walking around New York City. Therein lies a major problem with updating animated characters. There is a mile-wide gap between the character as people know and love them, and the character as restylized through a computer. But not to fear, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Eddie Murphy will be stepping behind the gi to voice the kung fu fighting dog of 70s fame. In the original cartoon, Penry was a janitor that cast off his mild-mannered alter ego and became Hong Kong Phooey whenever there was trouble...

In the '70s, the animated fighting kung-fu dog Hong Kong Phooey was a minor television favorite, in part thanks to the work Scatman Crothers did voicing the character. Now the mutt is set for a hybrid live-action/animated big-screen revival, in which the late Scatman will be replaced by Eddie Murphy. A press release recaps the show effectively: Based on the 70’s cult classic Hanna Barbera animated TV series, a mild-mannered dog named Penry (Murphy) stumbles into a mystic ceremony and is accidentally granted mystic powers, including the ability to walk, talk, and do kung fu. Under the tutelage of his kung fu master, Penry dons a costume and becomes Hong Kong Phooey, and with the help of his trusting sidekick Spot the cat cleans up a rogues gallery of wacky criminals. Alcon Entertainment is behind the project, and Alex Zamm (Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts, Tooth Fairy 2 - yike) will direct.

Eddie Murphy will voice the lead character, Penry, in Alcon Entertainment’s live-action/animated adaptation Hong Kong Phooey, which is based on the 1970s Hanna Barbera cartoon of the same name.
According to a release, the story follows “a mild-mannered dog named Penry stumbles into a mystic ceremony and is accidentally granted mystic powers, including the ability to walk, talk, and do kung fu. Eddie Murphy has a lot of experience doing voice acting in the Shrek franchise. THR reprots that the Murphhy is in talks to voice the title character in an adaptation of Hanna-Barbera's Hong Kong Phooey. The film will be based on the TV series from the ‘70s about "a dog who becomes a kung fu crime fighter."
The adaptation will be directed by Alex Zamm (Tooth Fairy 2) for Alcon Entertainment, and is planned as a combination of live action and animation. The story follows "a dog, Penry (to be played by Murphy) who is granted mystic powers, including the ability to walk, talk and do kung fu. Donning a costume to become Hong Kong Phooey, he sets out to combat criminals." Scatman Crothers voiced the character in the TV series.
I am not sure how I feel about Murphy doing more voice work like this. I would much rather...

You might think that Eddie Murphy would be able to retire from performing animated characters for life off the money he made giving voice to Shrek’s Donkey. But he’s clearly happy to step back into the booth for another run, signing on to voice Hong Kong Phooey.Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your feelings towards other films using the technique), this will not be a simple ‘toon, but instead work as a live-action/animated hybrid like (shudder) the Chipmunks outings and (double shudder) Yogi Bear. The basic plot, for those too young to remember the ‘70s series or who have never seen repeats, finds regular dog Penry stumbling into a mystical ceremony and being granted the power to walk upright and speak, plus a handy set of kung fu skills that are honed by a master. He forges a career as a superhero, hiding behind the guise of a humble,...

Eddie Murphy has signed on to provide the voice of the title character in the upcoming live action/animated film version of the 1970s Hanna-Barbera TV 'toon "Hong Kong Phooey." On the series, a mild-mannered dog named Penry is accidentally given meta-canine powers, including the ability to walk and talk like a human, and perform masterful martial arts like Bruce Lee. Naturally, Penry turns himself into a superhero named Hong Kong Phooey. Presumably, a CG Penry/Hk will inhabit a live-action world including some sorta well-known actors, in the successful style of "The Smurfs" and the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" films. While no stranger...

Apparently finished with voicing a donkey, which he did for four full-length Shrek features, Eddie Murphy.s moving on to brick-smashing, roundhouse-delivering, janitor dogs. The comedian will voice Hong Kong Phooey for Alcon Entertainment.s upcoming production, a live-action/animation hybrid (much like The Smurfs or Garfield) that will take its cues from the Saturday morning cartoon of our childhoods. Variety reports Murphy will lend his voice to Penry, a mild-mannered dog who .stumbles into a secret ceremony and is accidentally granted mystical powers, including the ability to walk, talk and do kung fu.. I can.t recall the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon, which only ran for 16 episodes in 1974, addressing Hong Kong Phooey.s origins. But I do remember Scatman Cruthers. distinctly scratchy voice in the lead role, voicing the clueless crime fighter who changed in a filing cabinet (stealing a page from Superman.s phone booth, no doubt) and received...

Move over Scooby Doo, 'Hong Kong Phooey' is getting his own movie.
Don't remember him? Phooey was a '70s Hanna-Barbera creation, a dog named Penry who happened to be a "mild-mannered janitor" who would turn into a karate-chopping crime fighter by jumping in a file cabinet.
Eddie Murphy has just signed on to voice Penry, who will be animated in a live-action movie. In the original TV series, the character was raspily voiced by Scatman Crothers. (See the series intro after the jump.)
Alcon Entertainment's Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove raved about Murphy's involvement: "We could not be happier that Eddie Murphy will star as Phooey. There is no overstating his contributions to cinema, and to such enduring stars of family entertainments such as 'Shrek' and 'Dr. Doolittle.' We look forward to watching him re-imagine yet another classic character."

This episode had a lot of highs and many lows for Ashley. You’ve all had very strong opinions about Bentley this season, both good and bad. I want to deal with all this episode had to offer, but first I want to give you some updates on things we have coming up in the very near future for you. First of all, we have wrapped the first part of production on Bachelor Pad 2. It is incredible and will far surpass anything we came close to producing last summer. From start to finish this show will entertain like never before.

What is there to say about 'The Cape' at this point? It started off with promise, but has quickly settled into something around which a drinking game, not a viewing experience, should be built. That's a touch ironic, since the ostensible target demographic for what this show's pumping out right now is almost a decade away from the legal drinking age.

The IMDb250. A list of the top 250 films as ranked by the users of the biggest Internet movie site on the web. It is based upon the ratings provided by the users of the Internet Movie Database, which number into the millions. As such, it’s a perfect representation of the opinions of the movie masses, and arguably the most comprehensive ranking system on the Internet.
It’s because of this that we at HeyUGuys (and in this case we is myself and Barry) have decided to set ourselves a project. To watch and review all 250 movies on the list. We’ve frozen the list as of January 1st of this year. It’s not as simple as it sounds, we are watching them all in one year, 125 each.
This is our 38th update, my next five films watched for the project. You can find all our previous week’s updates here.

They’re the unsung heroes of the large and small screen, and seldom get the recognition they deserve. To redress the balance, here’s Rob’s list of film and TV’s trustiest sidekicks...
Loyal friends, partners and questionable underage relationships, the world of heroes has always made room for the trusty sidekick. Chums, buddies and compadres. Every good hero needs one, and in most cases, they are there to give support and help in times of need. But in some cases they never get the accolades they deserve, putting in the legwork and the effort while their erstwhile partner basks in glory.
So, to salute hard-working sidekicks who have gone beyond the call of duty and saved their attention-hogging mentors on more than one occasion, we proudly show who's the real brains of the outfit...

Alex Zamm ("Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2") has been set to direct the film adaptation of Looney Tunes classic character Marvin the Martian for Warner Bros. Pictures and Alcon Entertainment says The La Times.
Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgove (TV's "Spin City") are penning the script about Marvin coming to Earth to try to destroy Christmas, only to find his plans are foiled when he gets trapped inside a gift box.
Marvin will be a CG character surrounded by live-action actors such as in films like "Garfield" and "Alvin & The Chipmunks", and a star will voice the character with Mike Myers apparently coming up as a candidate.
Zamm is also signed on to direct "Hong Kong Phooey," the film version of the 1970s Hanna Barbera cartoon which will probably not get underway until 'Marvin' is complete.
'Marvin' is currently aiming for a Holiday 2011 release.

As Brad mentioned several months ago, they're making a big-screen version of Hong Kong Phooey? It comes out in 2011. For some reason I have the theme song stuck in my head today, even though I haven't seen an episode in 30 years. Here's the opening credits. Scatman Crothers did the voice of the janitor/kung fu master.
By the way, he was a dog who changed into the superhero by going into a filing cabinet. Seriously.

He's smarter than the average bear, partial to the odd pic-a-nic basket and pals with Boo Boo, and pretty soon he's going to a film star too. That's right, prepare yourself for Yogi Bear: The Movie, a fusion of live action and CGI, that, if Warner Bros. get their way, will see Dan Aykroyd voicing the furry, park-dwellin' felon. Definitely involved in the Jellystone japes is Anna Faris who'll play a documentary-maker that may or may not be modelled on Grizzly Man-era Werner Herzog. Justin Timberlake, meanwhile, is in talks to voice Yogi's bow-tie wearing sidekick Boo Boo.It's a fairly demented sounding proposition but will hopefully be a step up from previous live-action/CG Hanna-Barbera adaptations, not least because there's more of them to come. A lot more. Warners are currently hard at work on a number of Hanna-Barbera properties, including Scooby-Doo 4, Jonny Quest, and the intriguing-sounding Hong Kong Phooey,...

If you needed any further reminder that Hollywood was plain out of ideas, here's a fresh one for you delivered in the form of a karate chop straight to your jugular vein: they're making a live-action version of Hong Kong Phooey. I didn’t even know that a live-action/CG hybrid adaptation of “Hong Kong Phooey” was in production! Now The Hollywood Reporter brings word that a writer has been secured for the project. Not just any writer either; this dude strings together words for Seth McFarlane’s hit TV series “Family Guy.”
David Goodman has been hired to put together a script of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon adaptation. In addition to his TV work — which includes writing on a number of “Family Guy” and “Enterprise” episodes and producer’s duties on both — Goodman also has a script in development at Warner Bros, a remake of the 1978 mystery/comedy “Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?” Goodman also notably wrote the classic “Star Trek”-spoofing “Futurama” episode, “Where No Fan Has Gone Before.”
