Tom Richards is a farmer who lives alone and decides to advertise for a companion-housekeeper to come and live with him. Tom is a good, kind man but is illiterate and as a bachelor hasn't put much effort into keeping house. He works his farm with the help of Jack and basically keeps to himself. When Edna Johnson applies for the job, he is quite pleased. She is attractive and a hard worker. They develop a mutual respect that leads to love and soon they are sharing the same bed. Edna soon realizes however that Jack has been taking advantage of Tom's good nature and sets out to rectify the situation. Jack however isn't going to just sit there and has his own plan, particularly when he learns Edna's secret.

When Gerald meets Orianda, he almost immediately falls in love with her. She mentions to him that she is alienated from her father and has not seen him for three years. He convinces her to visit and on arrival, she realizes that her father is living with another woman, Lizzie. Orianda decides to stay permanently and although her mother is dead, she takes it upon herself to ensure that Lizzie leaves. Gerald is somewhat puzzled by Orianda's attitude as from all appearances, Lizzie is a good woman and her father is happy. Orianda sets about scheming to destroy their relationship and in the process ultimately destroys her relationship Gerald.

Harvey Whitlow has been back from World War I for a year and he's been having a hard time making a go of it. He lives with his mother a travels from farm to farm buying and selling anything he can. Business is not good and if truth be told, many of the locals are tired of seeing him everyday. His mother suggests tat he try a new area and there he meets Mrs. Sadgrove and her daughter Mary. They seem quite pleased to trade with him and eventually ask him to Sunday dinner. Eventually, Mrs. Sadgrove asks if he would like to marry her daughter. She points out that she is in poor health and that her daughter will inherit the farm when she's gone. Harvey already has a girlfriend, Sophy, who quite likes him. He makes his choice but realizes too late it may not have been the right one.

After his father's death, George Pickard has a strange dream where his father tells him he's traveling to the small town of Skelby Moor. His father, Albert, was a traveling salesman who worked a large territory but the name is familiar to him. He takes his holiday there staying at the same hotel his father used. He finds that his father used an assumed named and at one point, was sad to the point of tears. George learns what was upsetting his father and also learns a good deal about his mother.
