In his over half-a-century-long Hindi film career, he sang more than a thousand songs, but just three serve to demonstrate his position in the industry’s scheme of things – the madcap “Ek Chatur Naar” where Kishore Kumar beats him; the enchanting qawwali “Na to karvaan ki talash hai” where Mohammed Rafi emerges triumphant eventually; and the classical contest “Ketaki gulab juhi”, where he beats Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
This was part of the misfortune of Prabodh Chandra ‘Manna’ Dey, born on this day (May 1) in 1919 in Calcutta. His classical training, innate talent, and “masculine” voice made him perfect for all shades of songs – romantic (including those for the vintage-aged), folk ballads, philosophical musings, and more, but he was never deemed a top-notch singer.
A nephew of gifted blind singer-composer Krishna Chandra Dey, who paved his way into music and films, Manna Dey’s forte was challenging, classical-based songs, especially those that his contemporaries considered difficult,...

New Delhi, May 1 (Ians) More than three decades before Aamir Khan’s train stunt in “Ghulam” (1998), this actor, renowned for his natural performances, had already done such a hazardous exploit, not just a daredevil challenge on the screen, but to inject reality into the scene and save the filmmaker the “bother of back projection”.
Balraj Sahni also involved Meena Kumari in his risky ruse in “Pinjre ke Panchhi” (1966), which — in another strange resemblance with Aamir’s film — was shot at Khandala. The scene had her walking on the rail tracks in a bid to commit suicide, even as he ran after her and managed to pull her aside from the rushing train at the last minute.
The filmmaker only wanted shots of him running after her and pulling her away; those of the were to be juxtapositioned. Sahni, however, knew that a train would pass the spot soon, and if they moved fast,...

He is probably one of the most secure actors in the country who has delivered multiple multistar, three-hero, and two-hero films. He is back with another two-hero film with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, where Tiger Shroff plays the parallel lead.
In the last 24 years, this is Akki’s 21st two-hero film, and this count does not include films like Hera Pheri and Heyy Baby or Housefull, where he shares the screen with more than one star.
Since 2000, there have been 20 films where Akshay has shared the screen or the film with another actor as the parallel lead. Now, the two actors might have played brothers, father-son, friends, or rivals. But...

Intrinsically talented, both, separately and jointly, gave a new direction to Hindi film music. But to achieve this, Asha Bhosle and Rahul Dev Burman had to surmount a major “hurdle” – creating a new identity distinct from their illustrious and established kin: elder sibling Lata Mangeshkar and father Sachin Dev Burman.
And both succeeded – with a combination of luck, support, their own undeniable virtuosity, and above all, their first joint effort.
AshaBhosle – who is still going strong at 90, having worked with four generations of music composers from O P Nayyar to A R Rehman – added a sensuous allure and element of forthrightness for the Hindi film heroine, without becoming risque or boisterous, even as Burman adroitly used pop and jazz to good effect in electrifying film music – bringing the age of Elvis Presley and the Beatles to India.

"I found Bimal Roy at his desk, writing something, when I entered his cabin. As he stopped writing and looked up, he appeared to be taken aback. He fixed me with a steady gaze and kept staring at me in silence… After a while, he turned to the people seated at the rear end of the cabin and said to them in Bengali: ‘Is this the man you had in mind? What sort of a joke are you playing on me?’
"Apparently, he wasn’t aware that I knew Bengali. Without even offering me a seat, he said to me, ‘Mr. Sahni, my men have made a mistake. I can see that you are totally unsuited to play the sort of role I wish to present in my film’," Balraj Sahni wrote in his autobiography ‘Meri Filmi Atamkatha’.

The youngest of Bollywood’s famous Kapoor brothers, he did not have their one defining and enduring cinematic image – Raj’s naive "tramp" identity in the Charlie Chaplin tradition or Shammi’s Elvis-like jiving, rebellious "playboy" persona, but went to surpass both in sheer diversity of his acting.
With his copybook good looks, rakish smile, infectious charm, toothy grin and languid drawl, or the air of earnestness, playing romantic roles, be they of businessmen, police inspectors, college students, et al came naturally to him, but Shashi Kapoor went on to play more ‘common man’ roles, decadent princes, aging poets and even angels with the same charm and intensity.
Born on March 18, 1938 in the then Calcutta to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarn ‘Rama’ Devi, Balbir Raj ‘Shashi’ Kapoor was destined to walk in his family’s footsteps on the silver screen.

For a self-taught musician, it is rather impressive how his melodies underscored popular culture for a range of occasions in late 20th century India – be it children’s lullabies “Chandamama door ke” or “Chal mere ghode”, “Ham bhi agar bachche hote” for their birthdays, “Mera yaar bana hai dulha” and “Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai” for marriages, as well introducing Afghan and Arab strains into Hindi film music.
That was the talent of music composer Ravi, whose contributions went beyond providing enthralling music in films such as “Chaudhvin ka Chand” (1960), “Gharana” (1961), “Waqt” (1965), “Do Badan” (1966), and “Hamraaz” (1967).
To Ravi also goes credit for giving Asha Bhosle a prominent place in playback with songs ranging from playful “C A T cat, cat maane billii” to wistfully romantic “Jab chali thandi hawa” (“Do Badan”) to the entrancingly philosophical “Aage bhi na jaane tu” (“Waqt”), as well helping Mahendra Kapoor evolve from yet another Mohd Rafi clone,...

By numbers, her work in the Hindi film industry seems quite scanty — at 33 films in around a decade and a half. But the statistics fail to reveal that, save around five, all were box-office hits, and some of them broke new ground, making her one of the most popular and successful actresses of all times — and a fashion icon too.
Though she struck gold right from her debut as female lead, and went on to become an “in demand” actress for everything, from frothy romances to tear-jerkers, Sadhana is most remembered for her trademark hairstyle — the famous “Sadhana cut” of fringes or short bangs (itself inspired by the elfin and charming Audrey Hepburn) — and pioneering form-fitting kurtas and churidar pyjamas.
But in her comparatively limited outings, Sadhana, who was born on this day in 1941, showcased her acting prowess. She could essay roles of a rich heiress to a village belle...

At just 8 years old, Blue Ivy Carter has a more impressive résumé than me, and I'm not even mad about it. The rising star just nabbed her first-ever BET Award - and became the youngest to win in the award show's history - for being featured on her mom Beyoncé's song "Brown Skin Girl" from The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack album. The uplifting anthem, which also features Saint Jhn and Wizkid, won the 2020 BET Her Award, which honors neo-soul and traditional R&b artists. The song was up against Alicia Keys's "Underdog," Ciara's "Melanin," Lizzo's "Tempo," Layton Greene's "I Choose," and Rapsody's "Afeni."
Of course, this isn't the first time Blue's been recognized for her contributions to "Brown Skin Girl." Last Summer, the popular tune entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and just a few months later, Blue earned a songwriting award at the 2019 BET...

Remember the evergreen song 'Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen' by Manna Dey? It came at the beginning of Yash Chopra's film Waqt when Balraj Sahni playing a prosperous entrepreneur breaks into a celebratory song and dance in sheer contentment.
Akshay's character's pride and predicament in director Raja Krishna Menon's Airlift is modeled on Balraj Sahni in Yash Chopra's Waqt whose life and family fell apart after a devastating earthquake.
Airlift even has Akshay Kumar singing a song like 'Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen' in the beginning before the invasion of Kuwai by Saddam Hussain.
Says the film's producer Vikram Malhotra, "The film shows how the poshest most affluent and cushy life can come apart within seconds. We wanted to show Akshay as a rich happy family man who feels like having a good time at a party, flirting with his wife (Nimrat Kaur), just like in the song 'Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen' in Waqt.

Glamsham.Com pays tribute to the literary giant of Indian cinema, Sahir Ludhianvi, in a week-long series on his 33rd death anniversary.Kal Koi Mujhko Yaad Kare , Kyon Koi Mujhko Yaad Kare , Musroof Zamana Mere Liye, Kyon Waqt Apna Barbad Kare!!When Sahir Ludhianvi, unarguably the most competent Hindi film lyricist, wrote these lines, little did he realize that with changing times, the quality of Hindi film lyrics would nose-dive so low that the coming gene...

Some films offer one an instant cheer-up and others speak to that gloom that we feel at certain ages and times. If I watch Pyaasa every afternoon, then Kagaz Ke Phool would be for each weekend since it envelopes this viewer into a sighing and sniveling wreck. The film is one of the rare cases where its trivia and history cloud the film as a whole due to its eerie significance in Dutt’s trajectory. You cannot talk of the film without looking at the overlap and meta-ness of the narrative’s role in Dutt’s filmmaking oeuvre. The film broke Guru Dutt’s heart with its commercial failure of which he never directed another film after, sticking to acting and writing for his other protégé’s projects Sahib, Bibi, aur Ghulam and Chaudvin Ka Chand.

She has sung for almost all of Yash Chopra’s films and provided his heroines with an iconic voice. So to hear the news of her very close friend passing away, whom she also considers to be a brother, came as a huge shock for the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. The 83 year old expressed her deep sadness to CNN-ibn regarding Yash Chopra’s death last weekend: “The news of Yashji going came as a bolt from the blue. Nothing had prepared me for this loss. I had been told he was down with dengue… I was planning to visit him in the hospital. But that visit kept getting put off because of problems in the family. Now I will never be able to see him.”

“I always believe that my films should give some hope to the man who comes to watch them for those three hours. If he goes home on an optimistic note, I would feel satisfied at having done my duty.” – Yash Chopra
It was indeed a sad day when news spread that one of India’s finest filmmakers, Mr. Yash Chopra, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 80. Mr. Chopra is an undisputable legend and he has crafted some of the finest commercial films the Bollywood audiences have ever feasted their eyes upon. If Satyajit Ray is considered by Indian film enthusiasts to be the supreme director when it comes to art-house cinema, Yash Chopra can be classified as the definitive director when it comes to mainstream cinema. Denied Kashmir, the great director turned to the English Lake District, Scotland and London as the background for ringing, singing declarations of on-screen love
The veteran Bollywood director, Yash Chopra, passed away this week at the age of 80. His death came just weeks before his much anticipated new release, Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) was due to hit the big screen. Yash Chopra may have been one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of Indian cinema, yet he will always be remembered as his country's king of celluloid romance.
During a career of 53 years he launched some of Indian cinema's most iconic and commercially successful films. Smash hits such as Waqt (1965), Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Silsila (1981), Lamhe (1991) and Veer-Zaara (2004) captured the essence of Yash Chopra's sensibility – a highly-stylised presentation of the emotional dilemmas of the super-rich. Yash Chopra
(27 September 1932 – 21 October 2012)
There are some who thrive on becoming a part of history. And then there are those who take it upon themselves to change it. Yash Raj Chopra belonged to the latter category. Since his first outing “Dhool ka Phool” in 1959. he churned story after fascinating story – a fertility unparalleled in the history of Hindi Cinema. Without sounding preachy or pretentious, his megaphone blared the saga of our times. At a time when India was coming to terms with the socio-economic realities of freedom, his debut film was soaked in Nehruvian Socialism. And to prove he wasn’t a flash in the pan, the very next film was on religious fundamentalism: Dharmputra (1961). His third film had the most epic ensemble cast ever assembled on Indian screens: Waqt (1965). Without revelling in the success,...

Yes, we know, it’s pretty hard to believe that one of the most highly paid top actresses is actually complimenting none other than Bollywood’s finest; Yash Chopra!
Of the living legend, Yash Chopra, who gave us films like Veer-Zaara, Waqt and Chandni, Katz had the following to say; “You know Yash ji is very senior and everyone used to say how young he is at heart. But you have to look at how sharp he is…He used to pick up these very small things… like if something was disturbing me or I was not in a good mood, he used to just pick it up and know how to deal with it.”
Whilst shooting for Yash Raj Films’ ‘London Ishq’ (although Yrf have yet to confirm the title) in London, Ms Kaif thought that Yash Chopra was “…a very special person and we had an amazing time.

Indian composer Ravi Shankar Sharma, who had a song featured in Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, has died at the age of 86.
The Bollywood music legend, simply known as Ravi, passed away on Wednesday at a hospital in Mumbai, India after suffering two heart attacks, according to Variety.com.
The composer wrote music for more than 70 films during his career, including Bollywood hits Chaudhvin ka chand, Humraaz, Waqt and Neel kamal.
He hit headlines after the release of Danny Boyle's 2008 drama Slumdog Millionaire because one of his songs from 1957 movie Narsi Bhagat was featured in the film as a question in the gameshow sequence.
However, the track was wrongly accredited to 15th century poet Surdas.
