Exclusive: Trimax Media, the production company led by Alan Glazer (The Bank Job), has acquired film rights to No Bullet Got Me Yet, John Stansifer’s forthcoming book about U.S. Army Chaplain, Father Emil Kapaun.
Stansifer has scripted the film adaptation, titled Father Kapaun’s Valley, which Stephen Campanelli (Drinkwater) is attached to direct. The intention with the project is to help fill the void when it comes to U.S.-produced films about the Korean War, while spotlighting a little-known war hero currently on the path to sainthood. Set to produce are Glazer and Stansifer, whose book is slated for publication on March 12, 2024.
The most decorated chaplain in U.S. military history, Kapaun regularly risked his life during the Korean War to help soldiers survive, also taking great pains to support them in their faith, no matter their religion. Among the most notable incidents from his military history was...

Barry Newman, who propelled a supercharged Dodge Challenger across the American West in Vanishing Point and portrayed a defense attorney on the NBC series Petrocelli, has died. He was 92.
Newman died May 11 of natural causes at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center, his wife, Angela, told The Hollywood Reporter.
After appearing on Broadway and starring in The Lawyer (1970), the Boston-born actor was up for a change of pace when he was offered the role of a man tasked with transporting a car from Denver to San Francisco in the action-packed Fox film Vanishing Point (1971), directed by Richard C. Sarafian.
“This was very unique,” he said. “I had just done this film about a lawyer, a Harvard graduate, and I thought this is a different kind of thing. The guy was the rebel, the antihero. I enjoyed doing that very much.”

I laugh when I hear people talk about how “Succession” is a sure thing winner for Best Drama Series and that it’s such a lock nothing whatsoever can derail it. Ha! Ha I say! Oh, it’s naturally going to be nominated and will likely remain the overwhelming frontrunner clear through Emmy season and up to Emmy night, all right. In the Gold Derby combined Emmy odds, it’s running away with this race, with “The White Lotus” Sicily” a very distant second. But if Emmy history has taught us anything, it’s that upsets happen, even giant ones. So you can absolutely never say never.
What upsets are we talking about? Well, let’s flash back and check out 15 of them, shall we?

If Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”) ends up winning his third Best Comedy Actor Emmy in a row, as Gold Derby predicts, he would join a rare group of four men who claimed this category three times consecutively. To date, only Don Adams (“Get Smart”), Carroll O’Connor (“All in the Family”), Michael J. Fox (“Family Ties”) and Dick Van Dyke (“The Dick Van Dyke Show”) have pulled off the three-peat. Will Sudeikis now become the fifth?
Sudeikis has been at the top of Gold Derby’s predictions for Best Comedy Actor all season long. His closest competitor is Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”), who dominated the winter awards season thanks in part to “Ted Lasso” not having any eligible episodes. Other likely nominees for the 2023 Emmys are Bill Hader (“Barry”), Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”), Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Jason Segel (“Shrinking”).

Rachel McAdams returns to theaters later this month with “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” It’s a significant role for the actress and one she wanted to do. She can’t say the same for some of the huge movies she turned down in the mid-2000s, some of which are the decade’s biggest films.

There are near-countless stories of actors passing on roles that ended up looking like extremely poor decisions in hindsight. Rather famously, Will Smith passed on starring as Neo in "The Matrix," for example. Nicolas Cage also could have starred in "The Lord of the Rings." But Rachel McAdams, the star of "Mean Girls" and "Spotlight," among many other things, has entered the all-time pantheon of actors who passed on big roles. She passed on not one - but five huge movies in a row. Between 2006 and 2008, McAdams passed on "The Devil Wears Prada," "Casino Royale," "Mission: Impossible III," "Iron Man," and "Get Smart."

Following the massive success of Mean Girls and The Notebook, Rachel McAdams had her pick of movies she could star in. That also means she had a say in which movies she would turn down…and it’s actually quite a lengthy list of box office hits.
Rachel McAdams did take some good parts for herself in movies like comedy hit Wedding Crashers and the underrated Red Eye, but offered Bustle a collection that she now feels “guilty” about snubbing, including a trio in 2006–The Devil Wears Prada, Casino Royale and Mission: Impossible III–and 2008’s Iron Man and Get Smart. Those roles would presumably go to Anne Hathaway, Eva Green, Michelle Monaghan, Gwyneth Paltrow, and, again, Anne Hathaway. Each of those would prove successful, with Iron Man being the most impactful of the lot, launching the most profitable movie franchise ever. Paltrow would play Pepper Potts a total of seven times,...

Not so long after rising to fame with “The Notebook” and “Mean Girls”, McAdams decided to take a break that ended up lasting two years. She moved back to Canada, frequently biking around Toronto and spending time with family.

Rachel McAdams has revealed the astonishing slew of hit movies she turned down while on a two-year hiatus in the 2000s.
In 2006, McAdams was being hailed as “the next Julia Roberts” after breaking out in beloved films such as Mean Girls and The Notebook.

She “spent her time biking around Toronto, spending time with her family, and recentering,” according to a new interview with Bustle.
According to the magazine, McAdams turned down five major films while “recentering” between 2006 and 2008:The Devil Wears Prada, Casino Royale, Mission: Impossible III, Iron Man, and Get Smart.

Judy Farrell, known for her role as Nurse Able in “M*A*S*H,” died on Sunday. She was 84.
Her “M*A*S*H” co-star Loretta Swit told Entertainment Weekly, “Judy was a most beautiful woman — inside and out. We grew up together. She was family. This has been a painful loss, but we will always have the beauty of her memory. Rest in peace, Nurse Able.”
She had suffered a stroke eight days prior to her death, TMZ reported.

In 1969, Brooks won an Oscar for The Producers for best original screenplay. Roughly 30 years later, the film was transformed into a Broadway musical, starring actors Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane. The production won 12 Tony Awards.
Despite the success of the 1967 film, Brooks reveals he had a tough time with his finances. Receiving an award didn’t translate into financial security.
“Up until Blazing Saddles, I was hanging on to show business with the skin of my teeth, not making any money,” says Brooks during an interview with Ruth Rogers on Ruthie’s Table 4 (presented by iHeartPodcasts). “The first movie I made was The Producers.

Norman Steinberg, the Emmy-winning screenwriter who teamed with Mel Brooks on Blazing Saddles and My Favorite Year and wrote for the Michael Keaton-starring Mr. Mom and Johnny Dangerously, has died. He was 83.
Steinberg died March 15 at his Hudson Valley home in upstate New York, his family announced.
Steinberg also wrote Yes, Giorgio (1982), starring Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti in his feature acting debut, and co-wrote Funny About Love (1990), directed by Leonard Nimoy and starring Gene Wilder and Christine Lahti.
The Brooklyn native and former lawyer won his Emmy very early in his career, for his work on a Flip Wilson variety show.
His TV résumé also included developing Marlo Thomas’ 1974 landmark kids special, Free to Be … You & Me (he brought Brooks in on that); serving as a writer and executive producer on the first two seasons of CBS’ Cosby; and creating the short-lived CBS sitcoms Doctor, Doctor and Teech.

Norman Steinberg, screenwriter of the classic Mel Brooks comedy “Blazing Saddles,” has died at the age of 83, his family said through a statement by the Writers Guild of America East.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh law school, Steinberg sought to be a comedy writer after he felt dissatisfied with life as an attorney. That dream was something that he would regularly tell Brooks when he encountered him at the Chock Full ‘O Nuts cafe in Manhattan, which led the famed comedian and producer to tell Steinberg to write a script for the sitcom “Get Smart.”
Though “Get Smart” was canceled by the time Steinberg finished the script, Brooks enjoyed it and told him to pursue writing. He quit his job as a lawyer and got his start as a writer for the music magazine Cash Box. Like countless others, he moved to...

Season 3 may or may not be the final installment of “Ted Lasso,” but either way, Jason Sudeikis could do something that hasn’t been done in 35 years: win three consecutive Best Comedy Actor Emmys.
Only three men have accomplished this feat in the category: Don Adams for “Get Smart” (1967-69), Carroll O’Connor for “All in the Family” (1977-79) and Michael J. Fox for “Family Ties” (1986-88). You could also could count Dick Van Dyke, who won for “The Dick Van Dyke Show” from 1964-66, but the first two were prior to the standardization of the comedy actor category. His 1964 win was under a discontinued lead actor category that was not genre specific, while 1965 was the year the Emmys experimented with just four categories and awarded five people, including Van Dyke, with a generic performance prize. O’Connor and Fox both have four comedy actor Emmys total, sharing the category record...

Andy Samberg and Jean Smart have teamed up for a unique May-December romantic comedy titled 42.6 Years, which is in development at Amazon Studios.
Craig Gillespie, the filmmaker behind Cruella and I, Tonya, is on board to direct the feature.
Samberg came up with the original idea and co-wrote the story with Seth Reiss, a writer on Late Night With Seth Meyers who is coming off a WGA Award nomination for The Menu. Reiss then wrote the script, which landed on the 2022 Black List.
The story centers on a young man (Samberg) who, in order to save his life, undergoes an experimental procedure in which he’s cryogenically frozen. When he wakes up 42.6 years later, physically unchanged thanks to being frozen, he finds himself alone in a future with no one to turn to but his ex-girlfriend, who is now much older than him (and played by Smart).

With the release of the trailer for the fifth "Evil Dead" installment, "Evil Dead Rise," fans are surprised to see the influential cabin-in-the-woods element that the Sam Raimi-created splatter-horror movies are known for (in addition to mainstay hero Bruce Campbell as Ash) relocated to a towering apartment in the middle of one of America's most populous cities. L.A., however, isn't the most far-off locale to be suggested for an "Evil Dead" movie. The first two films, "Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn" kept their demon-fighting hero in the rural woods, but following the 1993 macabre medieval third entry "Army of Darkness," the pump was primed for time-jumping narratives. Among the long-teased sequel ideas for "Evil Dead 4" -- that is, "Army of Darkness 2" -- is that of a double-plot, with double Ash trouble.

At the end of Sam Raimi's 1993 horror farce "Army of Darkness," the blustering a-hole hero Ash (Bruce Campbell), stranded in the early 14th century, has handily vanquished an army of Deadites and retrieved the magical Necronomicon, a book that has the power to return him to his own time. The bearded Wise Man (Ian Abercrombie) explains to Ash that he has to drink a vial of elixir and recite three magical words, being careful to recite them correctly (Ash had previously whiffed the same magic words earlier in the film).
An astute observer might have noticed that Abercrombie's mouth doesn't match his dialogue in that scene. This is the result of a massive recut to the ending of "Army of Darkness." In the original cut, and the cut released overseas, Ash was told to drink one drop of elixir for every century he wanted to travel forward in time.

Nine years after it disappeared from cable TV channel lineups, Speedvision is preparing to rev up its engines again.
The cable channel — which catered to automotive enthusiasts and racing fans from its launch in 1995 until Fox shut it down in 2013 — is being revived as a free ad-supported streaming network (the acronym being, appropriately, a Fast platform), with some high-profile backing.
Among the backers of the new Speedvision are Robert Scanlon, a co-founder of the original cable channel who most recently oversaw the Velocity and Motor Trend businesses for Discovery Inc.; Joe Abbruzzese, who was previously the president of advertising sales for Discovery; wrestling superstar Bill Goldberg; and automotive and racing magnate Rick Hendrick.
Scanlon will serve as the company’s president, while Abbruzzese will advise on ad sales and sponsorships. Goldberg is expected to appear as talent in some of the network’s programming.

“I didn’t even know that was the day,” recalls actor Christopher McDonald about his shock when he heard the news that he received his first Emmy Award nomination for his role on HBO Max’s “Hacks.” The actor describes how the “love poured in” that morning and says, “It’s amazing to get this kind of recognition… I’m over the moon, actually, it’s just fantastic.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
McDonald has been appearing on the series since the very first episode as the charming and sly Marty, the CEO of the Palmetto in Las Vegas where Jean Smart’s standup comedian Deborah Vance once had a successful residency. The first season depicts the two characters’ hilariously antagonistic professional relationship while offering glimpses into their close friendship and romantic past. In Season 2, Marty breaks the news to Deborah that he has a new girlfriend, and in the season finale,...

This story about Jean Smart in “Hacks” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Jean Smart gave another tour de force performance as comedian Deborah Vance in an emotionally charged diner scene in Season 2 of the HBO Max comedy-drama “Hacks,” and it required very little preparation. The scene finds Deborah, an older comedian who’s trying to keep together what’s left of her fame and career, demanding that her young writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) read her an email. But not just any email. Deborah tells Ava she must read the missive the twentysomething sent to some showrunners at the end of Season 1, where Ava raked Deborah and her behavior over the coals, exposing her misbehavior to outside parties. Smart doesn’t have a lot of lines in the scene, but the pain as she listens to the harsh and often brutally honest criticism is palpable.

Actress and comedian Hannah Einbinder was the breakout star of HBO Max’s comedy series Hacks, earning an Emmy nomination for playing Ava Daniels, an aimless, bisexual young comedy writer who provides jokes for the no-nonsense and brash Las Vegas stand-up comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart). With the success of the Emmy-winning comedy (it picked up three trophies in the fall, including one for Smart), the Los Angeles native, 27, suddenly found herself in unfamiliar territory: on the red carpet.
Working with stylist Kevin Michael Ericson, Einbinder has elevated her everyday look — vintage T-shirts, jeans, black Doc Martens — into A-lister style, more often appearing in suits and tuxes. “I have been so lucky to work with an all-queer team [Ericson, Molly Greenwald and Brian Fisher] for glam and styling, and as a result, I have always felt incredibly seen and heard when it has...

What do Sarah Paulson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Michelle Williams and Catherine O’Hara all have in common? Prior to Sunday night, they were the only performers to sweep all five major TV awards — Emmys, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Critics Choice Awards and Television Critics Association — in a single television season. Now, Jean Smart (“Hacks”) has joined this elite list of grand slam winners.
Smart claimed the Critics Choice Award on March 13 in the Best Comedy Actress category for her role as Deborah Vance on the HBO Max comedy series. Deborah is a legendary Las Vegas stand-up comedian whose career is stalling, so her agent hires a young writer (played by Hannah Einbinder) to help shake up her material. In her speech, Smart paid tribute to the show’s DGA-winning director Lucia Aniello, who recently gave birth in between directing scenes for Season 2.
