April’s an uncommonly strong auteurist month for the Criterion Channel, who will highlight a number of directors––many of whom aren’t often grouped together. Just after we screened House of Tolerance at the Roxy Cinema, Criterion are showing it and Nocturama for a two-film Bertrand Bonello retrospective, starting just four days before The Beast opens. Larger and rarer (but just as French) is the complete Jean Eustache series Janus toured last year. Meanwhile, five William Friedkin films and work from Makoto Shinkai, Lizzie Borden, and Rosine Mbakam are given a highlight.
One of my very favorite films, Comrades: Almost a Love Story plays in a series I’ve been trying to program for years: “Hong Kong in New York,” boasting the magnificent Full Moon in New York, Farewell China, and An Autumn’s Tale. A newly released rough mix of “Photograph” from Def Leppard’s archives shows a different side to the Number One rock chart hit. Where the version that came out on Pyromania and dominated rock radio in 1983 finds the band singing “Photograph” and Joe Elliott responding, “I don’t want your … / I don’t need your …” the rough mix has less vocals and more space. It sounds almost like a new wave song with more prominent (and funkier) bass, less reverb, and a lot more jangly guitar in the chorus. The cowbell remains the same.

Def Leppard have announced a 40th anniversary expanded reissue of their seminal 1983 album Pyromania, arriving April 26th.
The legendary UK band is pulling all the stops for the reissue campaign, digging into the archives for previously unreleased demos, outtakes, rough mixes, and live recordings.
The 4-cd/Blu-Ray and 2-lp editions will include the original remastered album as well as these archival recordings, including a rare rough mix of “Photograph” with an unfinished vocal track and a previously “long lost” demo of “No You Can’t Do That” — an outtake and the “11th track” from the Pyromania sessions.
“Rediscovering dusty old cassettes which were brilliantly restored by [executive producer] Ronan [McHugh] and finding the long lost unfinished ’11th track’ was a journey only few of us are lucky enough to take,” remarked singer Joe Elliot in a press release. “What a trip!”

Fifty years ago this week, Bob Dylan and the Band launched their landmark Before the Flood reunion tour with a pair of shows at Chicago Stadium. Dylan had been off the road for eight very long years at this point, and demand to see his return was so intense that promoters received 5.5 million ticket requests via a cumbersome mail-order system. To put that in perspective, that was four percent of the entire population of America.

Ever wondered what happens when theater rehearsals go terribly, terribly wrong? No, we’re not talking about forgetting your lines or tripping on stage. We’re diving into the blood-curdling, scream-worthy world of Stage Fright (1987)! This week, your Nightmare on Film Street horror hosts Kim & Jon are pulling back the curtain on an underrated slasher that deserves the spotlight!
In Giallo Stage Fright, a theater troupe is locked in an auditorium with a maniac donning an owl’s head. Sounds like a hoot, right? But this isn’t your typical night at the theater. As the cast becomes the hunted, the line between performance and peril gets deadly thin. Will they get a standing ovation or will it be curtains for them all?
So, dust off your theater binoculars, prepare your loudest gasp, and maybe keep an exit strategy in mind. Because this episode is set to be a showstopper!

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

While the past decade has brought an exponential rise in streaming services, none compare to Netflix’s catalog of stand-up specials. The streamer has become the go-to destination for the most popular comedians in the world. Its ubiquity has made watching stand-up easier than ever and helped launch comedy stars like John Mulaney, Hannah Gadsby and Ali Wong with high-profile specials.
But like the rest of its content, it can be hard navigating the field with so many great offerings. So if you’re in need of a laugh while scrolling through Netflix, here’s a list of some of the best stand-up comedy specials streaming right now.
John Mulaney: “Kid Gorgeous” (2018)
Every John Mulaney special has at least a few bits that will never leave your head but “Kid Gorgeous” is a collection of some of his best. This is the special that put Mulaney on the path of comedy culture domination.

Marlene Dietrich’s iconic Van Cleef & Arpels ruby and diamond Jarretière bracelet sold at a Christie’s sale, titled “The Magnificent Jewels of Anne Eisenhower,” in New York on June 7 for $4.5 million.
The actress commissioned the bracelet from the jeweler in 1937 and wore it to the 1951 Academy Awards and in Alfred Hitchcock’s film Stage Fight. The auction totaled $11.5 million and featured several other stunning pieces of jewelry from Tiffany & Co. and Cartier. Dietrich’s bracelet sold for the highest price.
“This bracelet is legendary in a lot of ways,” said Claibourne Poindexter, vp and jewelry specialist at Christie’s, when the auction was first announced in March. “It was one of [Dietrich’s] favorite pieces of jewelry. It’s bold. It’s very large in scale and has a wonderful curvature. She wore it so beautifully in Stage Fright, an Alfred Hitchcock film from 1950, and you get this appreciation for how sculptural the design is.

Baby J is back on the streets! Five years after the immense success of his special “Kid Gorgeous,” John Mulaney returned with his third Netflix comedy special “John Mulaney: Baby J” on April 25. Previously titled “From Scratch” during his comedy tour, the show provides insight into Mulaney’s high-profile, scandal-laden year. A public stint in rehab, a divorce announcement, and a surprise baby turned the comedy star into a tabloid talking point.
The 80-minute special provides further evidence of Mulaney’s considerable talent as a comedian. There’s no denying the man knows how to craft a joke and deliver a punch-line. His manner of speech and delivery has made him a unique voice and accelerated his success. “Baby J” contains some excellently conceived bits including his star-studded intervention, the frustration of not being recognized at rehab and his quest to quickly buy and sell a Rolex for drug money.

A ruby-and-diamond bracelet that legendary star Marlene Dietrich commissioned from Van Cleef & Arpels in 1937 and wore to the Academy Awards in 1951 is headed to the auction block. It will be offered as part of Christie’s upcoming June 7 sale in New York, titled “The Magnificent Jewels of Anne Eisenhower.”
Interior designer and jewelry collector Anne Eisenhower.
Eisenhower — an interior designer who died last year and was a granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower — was also privately a collector of many pieces of exceptional jewelry, from a Panthère de Cartier brooch to a Tiffany and Co. Art Deco diamond bracelet on which a rose is depicted by rubies and emeralds. Both are included in the auction, which has a total of 31 lots.
But it’s Dietrich’s bracelet, which Eisenhower anonymously purchased at auction in 1992, that is the undisputed star of the sale as well as the lot with the highest estimate — $2.5 million to $4.5 million.

The Covid-19 crisis has devastated cinema attendance. Several major cinema chains have closed around the world. In the face of adversity, this year’s 12th edition of the Lumière Festival in France’s Lyon, which runs Oct. 10-18, aims to fly the flag of cinema even more forcefully than ever, through its on site mix of career tributes, restored classics, world premieres of new films and a classic film market.

Jenny Slate is one of the most dynamic, energetic stand-up comedians performing right now, which makes the revelation that she has severe stage fright fairly surprising. Nevertheless, she decided to push through for her new Netflix special, aptly titled Stage Fright, which begins streaming on Oct. 22.
In the trailer for the comedy special, above, Slate not only performs on stage in New York City but also weaves in footage from her childhood home videos and intimate interviews with her family - her mom, dad, two sisters, and two grandmothers. From discussing the terrifying ghosts that haunted her Massachusetts home growing up to a story about being impressed by midnight Catholic mass, you can fully expect Slate to go there.

Lieutenant Fred Williams (Jack Hedley) is easily the horror cinema’s most pedestrian, laid back, and disinterested police detective in recent memory. In Lucio Fulci’s infamous slasher outing The New York Ripper (1982), a spate of brutal crimes involving young women being sliced up by a knife-wielding maniac who quacks like a duck lands right smack into Williams’s lap and he couldn’t be more bored by it. Mr. Hedley’s characterization of this by-the-book investigator was no doubt in the script, but his character just meanders through his scenes with such an aloof attitude that it’s amazing no one calls him out on it. The few times Williams does appear to spring to life are when the sex lives of his victims are revealed, which he reacts to with a judgmental shrug and smirk when he’s...

Big Little Lies is back in action for the highly anticipated second season with an updated all-star cast that includes a handful of Hollywood giants such as Meryl Streep. Besides Alexander Skarsgard's mysterious return as Perry, our most pressing casting question revolves around Douglas Smith as Corey Brockfield. He's Jane's offbeat coworker who's a surfer and aspiring marine biologist. While we got a glimpse of his character in episode one, we don't know a lot about him yet. We bet, however, that you might have heard of the actor behind the scenes.
The 33-year-old Smith had his first breakout role in the 1999 film Blast From the Past, playing a middle-school version of Brendan Fraser's character, a man who has lived in a fallout shelter with his parents for most of his life. Besides this part, Smith appeared in a handful of TV procedurals early in his career,...

When Eric Clapton first heard the Band, he knew he was done with Cream. “I’m in the wrong place with the wrong people doing the wrong thing,” the guitarist later recalled thinking, and he wasn’t the only one left stunned by the group’s laid-back revolution. Synthesizing R&B, country, blues and early rock with chops seasoned by years on the road with Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan, Canadians Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson, along with their Arkansas-born drummer-singer Levon Helm — once collectively known as the Hawks,...

Next spring’s Broadway revival of Lanford Wilson’s Burn This starring Adam Driver and Keri Russell has completed casting and set an April 16 opening date at the Hudson Theatre.
Previews begin March 15, with Tony Award nominees David Furr and Brandon Uranowitz rounding out the four-member cast, says producer David Binder. Michael Mayer will direct, with the design team including Derek McLane (Sets), Clint Ramos (Costumes) and Natasha Katz (Lights).
Burn This, which originated Off Broadway in 1987 before transferring to Broadway in an acclaimed production starring John Malkovich and Joan Allen, is set in a downtown Manhattan loft in the 1980s, as four New Yorkers are brought together after a funeral. Driver and Russell play the brother and the roommate, respectively, of the deceased.
Furr will play Burton, the longtime lover of Russell’s Anna. Tony nominated for his performance in the 2016 Noises Off revival, Furr has also appeared on Broadway in Accent On Youth,...

Even the great Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, was capable of producing a flop now and then, and Under Capricorn was just that—a big budget, star-studded, Technicolor affair that failed miserably at the box office as well as in the critic’s circle. In fact, even after a half-century to re-evaluate the film, many critics and Hitchcock fans dismiss Under Capricorn as merely a blip in Hitchcock’s oeuvre, which is unfair as the film, while not the standard fare one would expect from the filmmaker, is still a quality gothic romance.
Joseph Cotton stars as Sam Flusky, a one-time inmate in Australia’s penal colony who was released after completing his sentence and has become one of the wealthiest denizens of New South Wales. Flusky is married to Henrietta Flusky (Ingrid Bergman), who is a very sick woman and rarely leaves her bedroom.

In the last shot of Alfred Hitchcock’s final (and underrated) “Family Plot,” impostor-psychic-turned-kidnapper Barbara Harris looks straight at the camera and winks. It was only time in Hitchcock’s career that he broke down the fourth wall, and the gesture felt like his goodbye to his fans.
Harris died August 21 at 83 of lung cancer. Her notable roles included “A Thousand Clowns,” “Nashville,” “The Seduction of Joe Tynan,” and a supporting actor Oscar nomination for “Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?” But for Hitchcock fans, her death reminds us that 42 years have passed since the master’s last film, and fewer of his actors are still alive.
It’s nearly impossible to track every actor who appeared in his work. (Anyone from Hitchcock’s early British films would have had to be a very small child.) However, there are still a number...

Of all the many sub-genres in horror, the slasher is probably my favorite. There aren’t many good ones, but even the bad ones tend to deliver exactly what we want from the formula. They’re horror movie comfort food, and Shudder is offering an entire buffet this October.
Black Christmas (1973, dir. Bob Clark) In many ways the first modern slasher film, Bob Clark’s holiday horror movie is, to this day, a genre masterpiece. From its chilly Canadian atmosphere to the disturbing obscene phone calls being made to a sorority house, Black Christmas is brilliantly constructed and hugely influential. It’s not just one of my favorite slasher movies, but one of my favorite horror movies of any type, full stop.
Blood Rage (1987, dir. Bruce Rubin) There are slasher movies that are tense and scary and stylish. Blood Rage is not one of them. Shot in 1983 but not released...

Horror Channel FrightFest takes place in London this weekend. Here's our pick of films to look out for...
Summer’s almost over and what better way to welcome in the spooky season than by hiding from the heat in a darkened room, with five days of wall-to-wall horror? Yep, it’s August Bank Holiday and that means the 18th annual London Horror Channel FrightFest is upon us. For some, this is a familiar pilgrimage. Veterans will be used to bloodshot eyes, numbness in the spine, a lack of nutrition and an acute anxiousness every time there’s a loud noise. For others, it may be their first visit and these are things to look forward to. Either way, FrightFest promises probably the biggest, purest, uncut dose of horror you can endure without going insane, complete with special guests, world premieres, live events and at least a couple of parties.

Imagine the following sentence in the “'80s horror trailer guy” voice. In 1982, a killer haunted the halls of Crippen High School, giving it the moniker “Horror High.” Now, in 1987, a movie crew returns to Horror High and may or may not survive retelling the story of these heinous crimes. There will be blood! Lots and lots of blood!
It's been a very long time since I've seen Bill Froehlich's Return to Horror High, starring Brendan Hughes, Scott Jacoby, George Clooney, Maureen McCormick, Lori Lethin, Alex Rocco, Vince Edwards, Al Fann, and Panchito Gómez. So, I was absolutely delighted to get the chance to re-watch this glorious horror comedy and discuss it with our readers as part of our celebration of the Class of 1987.
After decades of horror films that were wonderfully serious, a tonal shift started happening in the 1980s, and by the mid-'80s, horror comedies had really gained momentum,...

Kevin James and James Corden played two overzealous and embarrassing sports dads on a silly sketch that also featured Adam Sandler on The Late Late Show Wednesday.
The bit began with Corden and James innocuously rooting for their respective kids, Charlie and Oliver, on the bleachers, though their cheering quickly snowballed into an egregious pissing contest.
