At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

The Academy Awards have been handing out a Best Actress trophy since the very first ceremony in 1928. Janet Gaynor for a combo of “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel” and “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” was the first recipient for his leading roles. The most recent champ was Renee Zellweger for “Judy.”
Since then, only one woman has won the category four times: Katharine Hepburn for “Morning Glory,” “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “The Lion in Winter” and “On Golden Pond.” Next with three is Frances McDormand. The ladies with two lead wins have included Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Jodie Foster, Glenda Jackson, Vivien Leigh, Luise Rainer, Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank. Streep holds the record of most lead nominations at 17.

Of the 272 films that have earned lone acting Oscar nominations – meaning they were each recognized in one performance category and nowhere else – a whopping 101 (or 37.1%) accomplished the feat thanks to lead actresses. Whereas just 60 examples have occurred in the Best Actor category, the corresponding female one reached that benchmark in 1991 and is on track to double it less than two decades from now. Its triple digit total has now been intact for one full year, having directly resulted from the simultaneous nominations of Ana de Armas (“Blonde”) and Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”).
Although an Oscar bid was generally expected to follow de Armas’s 2023 BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations, Riseborough very memorably came out of nowhere, having defied precedent by benefiting from an enthusiastic grassroots campaign. While most of the earlier lone Best Actress contenders belong in de Armas’s camp, many align with Riseborough in having pulled off major surprises.

Tom Luddy, the co-founder of the Telluride Film Festival and a longtime producer for Francis Ford Coppola’s Zoetrope Studios, died on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 79.
His death comes on the verge of the festival’s 50th anniversary, as Telluride planned to salute the man responsible for establishing the Colorado gathering as a critical launchpad for international cinema. Luddy was shrewd cinephile with a daunting grasp of film history that informed his sharp opinions about the medium, much of which played a role in the unique nature of the Telluride community.
The festival drew crowds of major directors and industry insiders in tandem with amateur movie lovers attracted to the same welcoming environment he created for anyone who shared his passion for the movies. For many Telluride devotees, Luddy was its biggest draw — someone as emblematic of cinema’s global presence as the directors he championed.

‘Unabashed, unfettered romanticism’ runs wild in Frank Borzage’s golden-age masterpiece of a runaway wife and the crazy Frenchman who pursues her. Long lost to awful, ragged 16mm prints, the newly restored gem will dazzle fans of delirious love stories, where the right people get together despite distance, time, and the interference of jealous husbands, misunderstandings, accusations of murder and natural disasters. All the above figure in this mini-epic, yet the movie never seems like a genre mash-up. Jean Arthur skips the squeaky line deliveries, Charles Boyer drops the gloom act, Colin Clive is more frightening than in his horror movies and Leo Carillo steals the show with one of the most endearing characters of the 1930s.

For more than 90 years, actors and actresses have coveted a chance at winning an Academy Award, the most prestigious trophy one can obtain in the film industry. The first-ever Best Actress winner, Janet Gaynor, was actually nominated for her work in three separate films; an adjustment was later made and nominations were narrowed down to a single role. Gaynor never claimed a bookend trophy in the category, but 14 others have. Scroll through our photo gallery below to see all of the multiple Best Actress Oscar winners who won twice (or more) for their outstanding performances in leading roles.
Unless you are Meryl Streep with an astounding Best Actress total of 17 nominations (plus four more in the supporting race), even a hint at an Oscar win is a great honor. Then there are the few outrageously talented leading ladies who have not only been nominated more than once but were also...

The average screen time for a Best Actress Oscar nominee is one hour, three minutes, and 28 seconds. Not surprisingly, over 45% of those who have contended for the award (and 47% of those who have won) have not even reached the one hour mark froo screen time. Here is a look at the category’s 10 shortest nominated performances, including four winners:
10. Frances McDormand (“Fargo”)
26 minutes, 29 seconds (27.01% of the film)
McDormand earned her first of two Best Actress Oscars in 1997 for playing the role of Marge Gunderson, a pleasant yet shrewd Minnesota police chief. Since she is absent from the first third of the film, her screen time is remarkably low, and even ranks 38 seconds below that of William H. Macy, her Best Supporting Actor-nominated castmate. To date, none of McDormand’s five Oscar-nominated performances have reached the one hour screen time mark.

Zendaya surprised many by winning Best Drama Actress at the Emmys for playing a troubled teen in “Euphoria,” which made her the youngest winner in that category’s history. Could she follow that by becoming one of the youngest Best Actress champs in Oscar history? She’s a contender for “Malcolm and Marie,” which debuts on Netflix on February 5. That makes it eligible since the academy extended their eligibility period to February 28 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As the 100th anniversary of the American Society of Cinematographers, New York Film Festival programmers Kent Jones and Dan Sullivan knew that 2019 would be an ideal time to look back at the history cinematography in this country. The 13-film retrospective they programmed as part of this year’s festival highlights some of the best work by masters of the craft like Gordon Willis, Gregg Toland, James Wong Howe, and Robby Müller, but it also serves as a history of the craft itself.
“We couldn’t do a comprehensive history of the Asc as a film series, and once we accepted that, it freed us to make some more interesting choices,” said Sullivan. “There’s some canonical titles, personal favorites, and weird things people might not necessarily think about in this context and might appreciate differently. But I would say roughly we were trying to capture the trajectory of the development...

“Roma” star Yalitza Aparicio could make history with a Best Actress Oscar win in multiple ways. Not only would she become the first Mexican woman and the first indigenous woman to prevail, but she’d be one of the youngest as well.
The former schoolteacher just celebrated her 25th birthday on Dec. 11 and will be 25 years and 75 days old on the Feb. 24 Oscar ceremony, which would make her the seventh youngest winner in the category. Three 25-year-olds have won Best Actress: Jennifer Jones prevailed on her 25th birthday on March 2, 1944, for “The Song of Bernadette”; “The Country Girl” (1954) star Grace Kelly, whom Aparicio would dethrone, was 25 years and 138 days old; and Hilary Swank was 25 years and 240 days old when she nabbed her first Oscar for “Boys Don’t Cry” (1999).
Then-21-year-old Marlee Matlin holds the record as the youngest champ, for “Children of a Lesser God” (1986).

“A Star Is Born” has always been a great talent vehicle, including the new Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga version, which Warner Bros. opened Oct. 5. Previous versions showcased big-name talent, but there’s also a stellar lineup of people who almost made the film but didn’t, including Cary Grant, Cher, Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston, Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise, Beyoncé Knowles and, behind the cameras, Mike Nichols, Quincy Jones and Clint Eastwood.
The new film is officially the fourth version, but it’s sort of the fifth. In 1932, Rko made “What Price Hollywood?” about an L.A. waitress who becomes a movie star while her alcoholic mentor declines. In the July 19, 1932, review, Variety shrugged, “It’s a fan magazine interpretation of Hollywood.” Five years later, Selznick Intl. Pictures’ “A Star Is Born” had so many similarities that Rko considered suing.

Last season, 22-year-old Timothée Chalamet could have become the youngest Best Actor winner in Academy Award history for his breakthrough performance in Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name.” Even though Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) prevailed, Chalamet is still the third youngest Best Actor nominee, just behind Jackie Cooper and Mickey Rooney.
This year, however, he could become the second youngest Best Supporting Actor winner for his performance in Felix Van Groeningen‘s biographical drama “Beautiful Boy.”
Based on the memoirs “Beautiful Boy” by David Sheff and “Tweak” by his son Nic Sheff, the film follows Nic (Chalamet), a teenager who leads a seemingly perfect life, but in reality struggles with an addiction to crystal meth, threatening to destroy his and his family’s entire lives. Frank Pierson's 1976 A Star Is BornLate in the night, early into their tumultuous romance, Kris Kristofferson’s John Norman Howard rescues Barbra Streisand’s Esther Hoffman from a crowd of fans and sycophants she’s just floored with a breath-taking rendition of "The Woman in The Moon" and "I Believe in Love." It’s a pivotal juncture that marks Esther’s ascent to fame, her star finally welcomed into the entertainment industry. Hands on the wheel of a roaring Ferrari, Kristofferson gives Streisand a proud smile, then looks at the city’s skyline and drives away: “it’s all yours baby, everything you want—your own piece of the American Dream.”Frank Pierson’s is the first version of A Star is Born to make explicit reference to the myth that underpins an eight-decades-old series of remakes. To be sure, the American Dream lingers all throughout the first two installments,...

Before we begin, a quick note that we shouldn't have to share but we do because the rest of the universe has conspired against the proper way of doing things. When we refer to an Oscar ceremony year we are talking about the year of the films honored, not the random month of the following year in which the ceremony is held. What we just witnessed was the 2016 Oscars. We don't know who will even be nominated for the 2017 Oscars yet though we'll make some early bird predictions on April 1st as we do.
Anyway... Facts. Trivia. Fun.
• La La Land's loss was shocking but its performance at the Oscars was not completely without precedent. Two other films in Oscar's 89 years have won the rare combo of Best Actress and Best Director without winning Best Picture. That would be Cabaret (1972, also the single film to win the most Oscars...

Norma Shearer: The Boss' wife was cast in 'The Divorcee.' Norma Shearer movies on TCM: Early talkies and Best Actress Oscar Note: This Norma Shearer article is currently being revised and expanded. Please Check back later. Norma Shearer, one of the top stars in Hollywood history and known as the Queen of MGM back in the 1930s, is Turner Classic Movies' Star of the Month of Nov. 2015. That's the good news. The not-so-good news is that even though its parent company, Time Warner, owns most of Shearer's movies, TCM isn't airing any premieres. So, if you were expecting to check out a very young Norma Shearer in The Devil's Circus, Upstage, or After Midnight, you're out of luck. (I've seen all three; they're all worth a look.) Sunrise
Scenario by Carl Mayer, from an original theme by Hermann Sudermann
Directed by F.W. Murnau
USA, 1927
William Fox had seen Faust, Nosferatu, and The Last Laugh, and on the basis of these German masterworks, he brought their creator, F.W. Murnau, to Hollywood. What he got was a truly distinct cinematic vision, which was what he had in mind: something to set a few Fox features apart from the other studios’ output. What he probably didn’t expect was just how much of that “artsy” European touch he was going to get with Murnau on contract. Were American audiences going to go for this type of movie, with its symbolism, melodious structure, and overtly self-conscious style? At any rate, Murnau’s first picture at Fox was one to remember. Sunrise, from 1927, is one of the greatest of all films. It is a touching, beautiful, and artistically accomplished movie, one of the best ever made,...

This is the second article in a three-part series.
Earlier this month, the acclaimed writer/producer/director Joss Whedon spoke at an Equality Now benefit dinner and suggested that the word “feminism” be removed from the English lexicon. According to Mr. Whedon, the word is problematic because it assumes that gender equality is not the “natural state” but something that needs to be achieved. Though several self-purported feminist bloggers have criticized this idea, Whedon’s speech does raise some interesting questions about how prejudice can hide away in the depths of language and rhetoric.
Thankfully, we have reached a point where shouting sexist comments is socially unacceptable and utterly disgraceful; anyone who does becomes ostracized by civil people. But that does not mean gender prejudices have been cured. The most corrosive type of sexism, and the one Whedon was getting at, is the kind embedded in words and institutions,...

(Click to enlarge) There.s no real formula one can use to win an Oscar . except this one. Researcher David Shaw broke down the history of Academy Award winner for Delayed Gratification, focusing on the winners in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. They start with Emil Jannings (who won in 1928 for both The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh) and Janet Gaynor (who won for participating in Three features that year: Seventh Heaven; Street Angel; and Sunrise). The chart is a hot mess of colorful lines. Staring at it for longer than a minute can induce migraine headaches. But here are a few of the major factors the research revealed. If you want to win an acting Oscar, you should: - Play a Fictional Character. - Play a North American (instead of a Brit or someone of a different, European descent). - Play someone who works...

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

Stevie Nicks is many things: Goddess Of Rock, style icon, survivor, and today is her 64th Birthday. We could never hope to give her all of the proper respect she deserves, but here's a small tribute to her legacy of cryptic lyrics, ethereal stage presence, and shawls.
So many shawls ...
1. - "Landslide." The greatest song ever written. Timeless, and one of the most covered songs of all time, from The Dixie Chicks to anyone learning the guitar ... or performing drunken karaoke.
2. "Sisters Of The Moon" - Hands down the best track from Tusk, the chances that Stevie would write a song named "Sisters Of The Moon" were always pretty good.
3. "Gypsy" - One of the definitive Fleetwood Mac songs, and one of the greatest music videos ever made.
4.

Comic book artist Jim Rugg (Street Angel, Afrodisiac) has an art show in Los Angeles on May 25 at iAm8Bit. 2012 Oscar Predictions Best Actress: Tilda Swinton, Glenn Close. [Photo: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley in The Descendants.] Like in the Best Actress 2012 Academy Award race, there are three shoo-ins for the Best Actor shortlist: George Clooney, Jean Dujardin, and Brad Pitt. Clooney will be in the running for Alexander Payne's The Descendants, Dujardin for Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist, and Pitt for Bennett Miller's Moneyball. Clooney has already won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his sleazy U.S. spy/weapons dealer in Stephen Gaghan's Syriana (2005). In the acting categories, he was also nominated as Best Actor for Tony Gilroy's Michael Clayton (2007) and Jason Reitman's Up in the Air (2009). This year, Clooney's own Golden Globe-nominated political drama The Ides of March serves as further evidence of the actor-director's "worthiness." (Clooney was a Best Director Oscar nominee for the 2005 black-and-white drama Good Night, and Good Luck, which also earned David Strathairn a Best Actor nod.

Oddly, when Frank Borzage's oeuvre, most of it long unavailable on home video, started to creep out on DVD, much of what appeared was lesser works from late in his career: no Moonrise, but instead China Doll (1958, released in the UK), and Magnificent Doll (1946, released in Spain). The balance was corrected by the sumptuous Murnau, Borzage and Fox box set (see The Notebook's coverage of that here, here, here, here, here and here).
The Doll diptych would be a doubtful introduction to Borzage's world, but both films are rewarding to the viewer who has already seen a few of the classics. Particularly of note is the way China Doll blatantly recycles a wonderful moment from Street Angel (1928), where the hero holds his cigarette lighter by the heroine's face to see her on a dark night, showing how consistent Borzage's concerns had remained over thirty years.

"Time just gets away from us." Thus, the penultimate line in a great American novel that has recently been transposed to cinema yet again. I cite it as my meager excuse for not being able to offer a more thorough consideration of the items I've chosen to treat in this particular report. Said items being two out of the three recent Blu-ray discs released on the French label Carlotta, presenting three (actually, more than three, but we'll get to that) silent-era masterpieces from the American director Frank Borzage, all of which have been previously made available in the States via Fox Home Entertainment's wondrous 2009 box set Murnau, Borzage And Fox. These being 1927's Seventh Heaven, 1928's Street Angel, and 1929's Lucky Star, Borzage's penultimate silent picture. My excuse for not having been able to check out the Blu-ray of Seventh Heaven I can put down to a cause unrelated to myself,...

Another Oscar Trivia Explosion. This time it's the Actresses.
Jennifer Lawrence made quite a film-carrying impression in Winter's Bone this past summer. It was one of the leggiest arthouse hits in some time, playing for months, and wracking up $6+ million without a huge advertising budget or bankable stars and with grim subject matter. Well done. At Christmas Hailee Steinfeld will lead us on a revenge journey in True Grit. While we suspect she's the lead actress as well, people her age are almost always demoted to "Supporting" if they're sharing the screen with a big star as co-lead and she is. Hi, Jeff Bridges! But we're pretending she's an Oscar lead today so as to have double the excuse to make this list. Humour us, won'cha?
Imaginary Movie: Steinfeld. Lawrence. Winter's True Bone.
36 Youngest Best Actress NomineesAnd where Jennifer or Hailee would fit in, were they to be nominated. (Winning performances are in red.

"Spider-Man" casting may have thus far overlooked "Community" actor Donald Glover, but Twitter has not. In fact, it turns out that Glover now has the voiced support of both Brian Michael Bendis and Alejandro Arbona.
In other tweets, Stan Lee revealed the backstory behind his non-Marvel-movie cameo on "Eureka," which SyFy watchers will want to take note of. A portion of his explanation is retweeted below along with a "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" trailer reaction from Jonathan Hickman and Andy Diggle on his specialized comic book writer use for his new iPad.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and it's all documented in the Twitter Report for June 1, 2010.
Donald Glover pt. 1: @Brianmbendis i support this!! Rt @chrischuang: Hey @Brianmbendis, @mrdonaldglover wants to be spider-man! #donald4spiderman
-Brian Michael Bendis, Writer ("New Avengers," "Ultimate Spider-Man")
Donald Glover pt. 2: @Alejandrobot I'll vote for #donald4spiderman but only if he's credited as Donny Glover.

Popular late ’20s lovebirds Janet Gaynor, Charles Farrell (7th Heaven, Street Angel), Photoplay Inside The Hollywood Fan Magazine: From Mary Pickford to Elizabeth Taylor How did the Hollywood fan magazine come about? Who came up with that idea? Had there been film fan magazines in Europe or was that an American invention? The fan magazine was an American invention. Earlier, there had been trade papers published for the film industry, but the idea for a fan magazine, geared towards the filmgoing public, came from the popular, general magazines of the day, which had begun in the 1880s and whose style and format the first fan magazines copied. The first fan magazine was The Motion Picture Story Magazine (which later became Motion Picture), [...]...

The “best actress curse” dates back to the very first Academy Awards: when Janet Gaynor took home her Oscar for “Seventh Heaven,” “Sunrise,” and “Street Angel,” her beloved husband was by her side; just four years later, they were divorced. Over the years, many other women have followed a similar trajectory, including legends like Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Vivien Leigh, Ginger Rogers, Ingrid Bergman, Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Jane Fonda, and Faye Dunaway. Over the past 20 years, the number of instances has exploded — indeed, no fewer than 10 have seen their relationships crumble shortly after their big night, during which most had professed their undying love to their significant other from the podium before an international audience. We highlight each — from least to most high-profile, in my estimation — below.

From my inbox… a graphic novel published earlier this year that’s news to me…
Inspired by the blaxploitation films of the 1970s and classic superhero comics, Afrodisiac stars the original super badass and featuring cool cars, sexy women, scary monsters, self-righteous superheroes, corrupt cops, aliens, Dracula, Richard Nixon.
From Publishers Weekly… From the creators of the excellent Street Angel comes this thoroughly entertaining and utterly nutso pastiche of several eras of late-20th century comics genres and the superbad blaxploitation heroic archetype.
The titular hero is a ’70s-era bad brutha-man archetype writ hilariously large and depicted in adventures that cross multiple perfectly evoked comics styles (the art’s a knockout).
Afrodisiac’s all-over-the-place exploits provide a frantic cornucopia overflowing with legions of foxy white ladies driven to states of unabashed lubricity by our hero’s melanin-rich manliness; space aliens and flying saucers; dinosaurs; funny animals; Richard Nixon; kung fu...

Sunday evening sees the biggest movie awards event of the year. The 82nd Academy Award ceremony is taking place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Billions will be watching with bated breath as a variety of stars smugly congratulate each other. Oh, come on, you know it’s just the greatest promotional event ever created!
What do awards mean anyway? Haven’t they always been a little bit pointless and strange? Two-time Oscar winner William Friedkin has lambasted them the day since he got hold of one, make that, two. Of course, he was a supreme egotist in the 1970s, but he has a good point. He’s not the only creative talent to stick two fingers up at Oscar. Marlon Brando famously sent a Native American to collect his award for The Godfather and George C. Scott, who won for Patton in 1970, called the event “a meat parade”.

Motion pictures were mere novelties when William Fox entered the business, first as a nickelodeon magnate, then as the founder of the Fox Film Corporation. Fox set his product apart by emphasizing technical innovation and top-notch directors. When the famed German expressionist F.W. Murnau emigrated to America in 1926, Fox snapped him up, and encouraged his employees to pick Murnau's brain. Howard Hawks, William Wellman, and John Ford all learned from Murnau, but the Fox director arguably most affected by Murnau's presence on the lot was Frank Borzage, an already-excellent storyteller fascinated by human faces and transformative romance. Because Fox let Murnau define his studio's style, the first Academy Awards ceremony was largely dominated by three Fox films: Borzage's 7th Heaven and Street Angel, and Murnau's Sunrise. Unlike Fox's big box set of John Ford films last year, the staggering Murnau, Borzage And Fox set is more esoteric in...
