Sad Loss For Silent Cinema
PamelaShort16 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Mrs. Emma McChesney ( Ethel Barrymore ) is a strong-willed travelling saleswoman for T. A. Buck's Featherbloom Petticoat Company, but when Buck dies, his son, T. A. Buck, Jr. ( Huntley Gordon ), takes charge. Soon the company begins to suffer and Emma nearly accepts a job offer from Buck's rival, Abel Fromkin ( John Daly Murphy ). While on her last sales trip, Emma learns that her son Jack ( Wilfred Lytell ) has married chorus girl Vera Sherwood ( Lucille Lee Stewart ). Now worried over Jack's marriage, Emma sends the young bride away to boarding school while Jack takes a job with Buck's company. When Emma discovers the firm is approaching bankruptcy, she invents a new skirt which, as modelled by Vera and promoted by Jack takes the fashion world by storm and saves Buck's company. Buck has fallen in love Emma and she accepts his marriage proposal.

Based on the 1915 play which also starred Ethel Barrymore, the 1918 film adaptation was directed by Ralph Ince and produced and distributed by Metro Pictures with Barrymore reprising her role as did her fellow cast member Huntley Gordon. Lucille Lee Stewart was a sister of popular silent film actress Anita Stewart and married to director Ralph Ince. Sadly this silent film remains lost.
