funnier to act like a man
29 March 2024
Womanizing Charlie Sorel gets caught by a jealous husband Sir Leopold Sartori (Walter Matthau) and shot jumping off the yacht. His best friend George Tracy (Tony Curtis) goes to speak at his memorial service. Not many people actually shows up. George is alone after the event when Bruce Minton III (Pat Boone) brings a disheveled young woman suffering amnesia (Debbie Reynolds). After waking up, she remembers that she is the reincarnation of Charlie Sorel who died broke. She starts anew as Charlie's widow.

This needs a bit more time introducing the Charlie character when he's a man. This premise needs the character to do split duty. Quite frankly, I would love Tony Curtis to play the same character as Debbie Reynolds. The comedy comes in when she is shocked by the treatment that he himself would do as a man. This depends on Debbie Reynolds playing the dude. The comedy is less funny when she's acting like a girl. The deeper meaning behind what she's doing must have come with some issues. I wonder if she really butch it up and make the character a lesbian, that might be too controversial for its time.
