The way I understood the ending

Warning: Spoilers
I've only come on here to state what I think is a possible ending that nobody else seems to have stated. I haven't had benefit of seeing the alternate ending that was issued to some countries; I think European was different.

The two main characters that fall in love with Manuela; initially Prothero and then the Captain Trevor, are main characters because of their love affairs with Manuela, and then seafaring allegiance to each other. The end scenes have Prothero telling Manuela that Trevor, whom she is now smitten with, has died in the other life boat. He hasn't, and he's waiting outside to meet him and hear of his passing her money for her original intent to move to England. In leaving together Prothero uses reverse psychology and convinces Trevor, who really does love Manuela, to quit his seafaring life and stay ashore with her. Prothero realises he's lost the battle for her love and seeks her good instead after having had one last shot at gaining her love in speaking to her. The last scene is Trevor turning around and not walking to the boat they're to go on, with Prothero, and instead walking back to Manuela to make his life with her, you can imagine the last few steps back to her. A nice ending that I perceive .. you make your mind up.
