This movie just about works as it's got some musicians as actors but it is also very elaborate and not that technically-accomplished musical wise. It's a goofy film with a lot of Spinal Tap tour moments.
Script-writing is solid with a lot of great gags and classic rock'n'roll debonair action and plenty of debouchery to go with it.
The 1990's is a long time ago now so it's definitely aged a bit. Zoe Ball in it gives it a nice touch and a professional angle from Jimmy Nail who is a trained musician as well.
However the solos don't really work and the riffs are a bit with strained. Everytime I think they're going to go on a great solo or live piece they don't quite cut it. It's a shame as it's so close to becoming a real classic rock film.
The humour is there and mainly this is because of the exceptional Billy Connolly; Timothy Spall and Bill Nighy is class as ever. It just isn't quite there on a music angel for me.
As a drama it is absolutely hilarious and well-worthy of a Golden Globe nomination. It has so many cliches and tired scripts but it's still so much fun to enjoy. A strong 7/10.
