Adapted from the novel "Apache Rising" by Marvin H. Albert who was also credited for co-writing the screenplay, co-produced and directed by Ralph Nelson. It opens with a gun man, Jess Remsberg (James Garner) saving the life of Ellen Grange (Bibi Anderson) while wondering around the desert. By the time he brings her into a nearby town, it turns out that the very town she's been brought back to has created some hostility between her and the residents especially her husband, Willard Grange (Dennis Weaver). We then find out that their complicated relationship was due because Willard's wife, Ellen used to live with Apaches for the last two years as a result of her being abducted. Meanwhile, Jess is still carrying a pouch with him looking for the murder of his Apache wife.
